  • String Question. How to count the number of A,a, numeric and special char

    - by Brad
I have randomly created strings such as H*P2[-%-3:5RW0j*;k52vedsSQ5{)ROkb]P/*DZTr*-UX4sp What I want to do is get a count of all Caps, lower case, numeric and special characters in each string as they are generated. I am looking for an output similar to Caps = 5 Lower = 3 numneric = 6 Special = 4 Fictitious values of course. I have gone through the php string pages using count_char, substr_count etc but cant find what I am looking for. Thank you

  • Best practice for viewflipper containing 10 linearlayouts?

    - by Brad Hein
I'm embarking on a GUI Activity composed of a viewflipper, which I would like to contain 10 linearlayout layouts. Is it advisable to put all of my layouts into the same XML resource/layout file? If not, is there a more organized approach to coding a viewflipper with many layouts? Will having everything in the same file come at a significant performance cost?

  • In Flex 3 is there a way to pre-buffer an image so that it appears without flickering?

    - by Brad Urani
In my application I have an VBox control on top of another VBox that contains an Image control that loads a jpg from a URL (you can't see the bottom panel initially since it's underneath, but the image does fully download). When one clicks on the top VBox, the bottom one gets set to visible=false, then an effect causes the top VBox to vanish, then the bottom VBox is set to visible=true and an effect causes it to appear. Continuously clicking the VBoxes causes them to alternate appearing and disappearing. The problem is that the first time the bottom VBox appears, it flickers once when it draws. After that, there's no problem and it smoothly appears and disappears with the effect with no problem. It's as if the first time the bottom VBox appears, it flickers because even though the image has been downloaded, it has never been displayed before. Can I pre-buffer the image in the bottom VBox somehow to avoid this flicker?

  • Project Euler (P14): recursion problems

    - by sean mcdaid
    Hi I'm doing the Collatz sequence problem in project Euler (problem 14). My code works with numbers below 100000 but with numbers bigger I get stack over-flow error. Is there a way I can re-factor the code to use tail recursion, or prevent the stack overflow. The code is below: import java.util.*; public class v4 { // use a HashMap to store computed number, and chain size static HashMap<Integer, Integer> hm = new HashMap<Integer, Integer>(); public static void main(String[] args) { hm.put(1, 1); final int CEILING_MAX=Integer.parseInt(args[0]); int len=1; int max_count=1; int max_seed=1; for(int i=2; i<CEILING_MAX; i++) { len = seqCount(i); if(len > max_count) { max_count = len; max_seed = i; } } System.out.println(max_seed+"\t"+max_count); } // find the size of the hailstone sequence for N public static int seqCount(int n) { if(hm.get(n) != null) { return hm.get(n); } if(n ==1) { return 1; } else { int length = 1 + seqCount(nextSeq(n)); hm.put(n, length); return length; } } // Find the next element in the sequence public static int nextSeq(int n) { if(n%2 == 0) { return n/2; } else { return n*3+1; } } }

  • Python - Test directory permissions

    - by Sean
In Python on Windows, is there a way to determine if a user has permission to access a directory? I've taken a look at os.access but it gives false results. >>> os.access('C:\haveaccess', os.R_OK) False >>> os.access(r'C:\haveaccess', os.R_OK) True >>> os.access('C:\donthaveaccess', os.R_OK) False >>> os.access(r'C:\donthaveaccess', os.R_OK) True Am I doing something wrong? Is there a better way to check if a user has permission to access a directory?

  • What does a modern, standard Microsoft-based technology stack look like?

    - by Sean Owen
Let's say I asked Microsoft to describe the perfect, modern, Microsoft-based technology stack to power a standard e-commerce web site, which perhaps has a simple 2-tier web/database architecture. What would it be like? Yes, I'm just looking for a list of product / technology names. For example, in the J2EE world, I might describe a stack that includes: J2EE 6 standard JavaServer Faces Glassfish 3 MySQL 5.1.x I'm guessing this stack includes some combination of .NET, SQL Server, ASP.NET, IIS, etc. but I am not familiar with this world. Looking for ideas on the equivalent in Microsoft-land.

  • Using "Show values as" option in Excel 2007 pivot table when source is SSAS cube?

    - by Brad
I have an Excel 2007 pivot table showing "Year" across the top and "Month" down the side. What I am trying to do is represent the values as "% Difference" from the same month of the previous year. (Ex. If Jan-07 is $100,000 and Jan-08 is $120,000, I would like Jan-08 to show '20%'). However, every time I try to do this (using the "Show values as" tab of Value Field Settings) all of my numbers go to '#N/A'. Is there a way to do this using an Analysis Services cube as the data source? When I do this exact same thing using data on a different sheet as the data source for the pivot table, it works fine. Thanks in advance for any insight into this.

  • How can I click a button behind a transparent UIView?

    - by Sean Clark Hess
Let's say we have a view controller with one sub view. the subview takes up the center of the screen with 100 px margins on all sides. We then add a bunch of little stuff to click on inside that subview. We are only using the subview to take advantage of the new frame ( x=0, y=0 inside the subview is actually 100,100 in the parent view). Then, imagine that we have something behind the subview, like a menu. I want the user to be able to select any of the "little stuff" in the subview, but if there is nothing there, I want touches to pass through it (since the background is clear anyway) to the buttons behind it. How can I do this? It looks like touchesBegan goes through, but buttons don't work.

  • Why can't HTC Droid running OTA 2.1 communicate with RFCOMM?

    - by Brad Hein
Yesterday we received OTA Android 2.1 on my wife's HTC Droid - HOORAY!!! I am finally able to load my carputer app on her phone. Well we loaded it, but it doesn't work. Specifically, it connects but sees no I/O!!! I paired, re-paired, and re-paired again, every time its the same problem: connect() says we connected successfully, but any attempt to send or receive data appears to work but no data ever arrives in the input buffer. The device I'm connecting to uses AT commands. ATI should respond with a device ID. That works fine when I run the app on my Moto Droid, but on the HTC droid, no data is ever present in the inputstream/buffer. Personally, I'm feeling pretty sure it's a bug or limitation in this release for the HTC (because the app works great on my Moto A855 Droid). Can anybody comment on the issue? Obligatory code snippets: Member variable defining my RFCOMM UUID static final UUID UUID_RFCOMM_GENERIC = UUID.fromString("00001101-0000-1000-8000-00805F9B34FB"); Parts of my connect() // make sure peer is defined as a valid device based on their MAC. If not then do it. if (mBTDevice == null) mBTDevice = mBTAdapter.getRemoteDevice(mPeerMAC); // Make an RFCOMM binding. try {mBTSocket = mBTDevice.createRfcommSocketToServiceRecord(UUID_RFCOMM_GENERIC); } catch (Exception e1) { msg ("connect(): Failed to bind to RFCOMM by UUID. msg=" + e1.getMessage()); return false; } msg ("connect(): Try to connect."); try { mBTSocket.connect(); } catch (Exception e) { msg ("connect(): Exception thrown during connect: " + e.getMessage()); return false; // there was a problem connecting... make a note of the particulars and move on. } msg ("connect(): CONNECTED!"); try { mBTOutputStream = mBTSocket.getOutputStream(); mBTInputStream = new BufferedInputStream (mBTSocket.getInputStream(),INPUT_BUFFER_SIZE); //msg ("Connecting non-buffered input stream..."); //mBTInputStream = mBTSocket.getInputStream(); } catch (Exception e) { msg ("connect(): Error attaching i/o streams to socket. msg=" + e.getMessage()); return false; } resetErrorCounters(); setConnected(true); return true; } Then I send "ATI\r" and expect something like "CAN OBD II" but I get nothing. mBTInputStream.available(), it seems, is ALWAYS zero, even when data should be in the input buffer. There are GOBS of trace messages being generated by the OS as viewed with adb logcat -v time Some of the more interesting ones: 05-17 19:44:21.447 D/BluetoothSppPort( 5809): connected to device service! I have an ASP app that has a string array as such (there are much more than this): 7.5.0.17 Date: 05_03_10 7.5.0.18 Date: 05_03_10 7.5.0.19 Date: 05_04_10 7.5.0.2 Date: 02_19_10 7.5.0.20 Date: 05_06_10 7.5.0.3 Date: 02_26_10 7.5.0.4 Date: 03_02_10 7.5.0.5 Date: 03_08_10 7.5.0.6 Date: 03_12_10 7.5.0.7 Date: 03_19_10 7.5.0.8 Date: 03_25_10 7.5.0.9 Date: 03_26_10 7.5.1.0 Date: 05_06_10 How do I go about sorting these string by version descending?

  • ContentPlaceHolders: Repeated Content

    - by brad
Scenario I have an application using asp.net Master Pages in which I would like to repeat some content at the top and bottom of a page. Currently i use something like this: Master Page <html> <body> <asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="Foo" runat="server"> </asp:ContentPlaceHolder> <!-- page content --> <asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="Bar" runat="server"> </asp:ContentPlaceHolder> </body> </html> Content Page <asp:Content ID="Top" ContentPlaceHolderID="Foo" runat="server"> <!-- content --> </asp:Content> <asp:Content ID="Bottom" ContentPlaceHolderID="Bar" runat="server"> <!-- content repeated --> </asp:Content> Maintenance As you know, repeating things in code is usually not good. It creates maintenance problems. The following is what I would like to do but will obviously not work because of the repeated id attribute: Master Page <html> <body> <asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="Foo" runat="server"> </asp:ContentPlaceHolder> <!-- page content --> <asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="Foo" runat="server"> </asp:ContentPlaceHolder> </body> </html> Content Page <asp:Content ID="Top" ContentPlaceHolderID="Foo" runat="server"> <!-- content (no repetition) --> </asp:Content> Possible? Is there a way to do this using asp.net webforms? The solution does not necessarily have to resemble the above content, it just needs to work the same way. Notes I am using asp.net 3.0 in Visual Studio 2008

  • Unable to reverse seemingly simple rails migration - getting "altered_table.column may not be NULL"

    - by brad
I have a table 'invoices' in my development database (sqlite3) populated with a small amount of test data. I wanted to add a column 'invoice_number' to it and set up a migration like so: class AddInvoiceNumberColumnToInvoices < ActiveRecord::Migration def self.up add_column :invoices, :invoice_number, :integer end def self.down remove_column :invoices, :invoice_number end end I ran rake db:migrate and it seemed to migrate just fine. However, when I tried to access this column through ActiveRecord it didn't seem to be there. I decided to undo this migration and try again (not sure what I was going to try but I thought I'd start by undoing it) with rake db:migrate VERSION='whatever_the_migration_before_this_one_was_called'. This failed with the error message == AddInvoiceNumberColumnToInvoices: reverting =============================== -- remove_column(:invoices, :invoice_number) rake aborted! An error has occurred, this and all later migrations canceled: altered_invoices.invoice_number may not be NULL I can't find any documentation of this error. Is anyone able to explain what I have done wrong, and more importantly how I can fix this?

  • How do I check for a tag's existence in a post in Wordpress?

Can anybody help? Thanks

  • Formatted text encoding in binary plist

    - by Sean
I'm trying to do some scripting that edits a binary plist file. The plist describes the objects contained in a DVD studio pro file. It appears that a text box in DVD studio pro is encoded in the plist as hex data that describes the text string along with its formatting. I can't seem to figure out how to understand this data. Ideally, I'd like to be able to alter the text string but not the formatting. The following seems to describe a text box that says "Menu title here". There are two hex strings, one with the key called "dictionary" and the other called "string"; both are CFData. Any ideas how I can parse this or convert this into a format that I can edit directly? I've been playing around with writing a little converter in cocoa, but no luck yet. <dict> <key>Dictionary</key> <data> BAtzdHJlYW10 eXBlZIHoA4QB QISEhAxOU0Rp Y3Rpb25hcnkA hIQITlNPYmpl Y3QAhYQBaQaS hISECE5TU3Ry aW5nAZSEASsG TlNGb250hpKE hIQGTlNGb250 HpSVJIQFWzM2 Y10GAAAAGgAA AP/+TAB1AGMA aQBkAGEARwBy AGEAbgBkAGUA AACEAWYVhAFj AJsBmwCbAIaS hJaXB05TQ29s b3KGkoSEhAdO U0NvbG9yAJSb AYQEZmZmZoPz 8nI/g/Dvbz+D 7OtrPwGGkoSW lwtOU0V4cGFu c2lvboaShISE CE5TTnVtYmVy AISEB05TVmFs dWUAlIQBKoSa moNHx9c9hpKE lpcNTlNPYmxp cXVlbmVzc4aS hJ6ghIQBZKEA hpKElpcQTlNQ YXJhZ3JhcGhT dHlsZYaShISE EE5TUGFyYWdy YXBoU3R5bGUA lIQEQ0NAUwAA hQCGkoSWlxFO U0JhY2tncm91 bmRDb2xvcoaS hJubA4QCZmYA AIaG </data> <key>String</key> <data> BAtzdHJlYW10 eXBlZIHoA4QB QISEhBJOU0F0 dHJpYnV0ZWRT dHJpbmcAhIQI TlNPYmplY3QA hZKEhIQITlNT dHJpbmcBlIQB Kw9OZW51IFRp dGxlIEhlcmWG hAJpSQEPkoSE hAxOU0RpY3Rp b25hcnkAlIQB aQWShJaWDU5T T2JsaXF1ZW5l c3OGkoSEhAhO U051bWJlcgCE hAdOU1ZhbHVl AJSEASqEhAFk nQCGkoSWlgtO U0V4cGFuc2lv boaShJuchIQB Zp6DR8fXPYaS hJaWEE5TUGFy YWdyYXBoU3R5 bGWGkoSEhBBO U1BhcmFncmFw aFN0eWxlAJSE BENDQFMAAIUA hpKElpYGTlNG b250hpKEhIQG TlNGb250HpSZ JIQFWzM2Y10G AAAAGgAAAP/+ TAB1AGMAaQBk AGEARwByAGEA bgBkAGUAAACe FYQBYwCjAaMA owCGkoSWlgdO U0NvbG9yhpKE hIQHTlNDb2xv cgCUowGEBGZm ZmaD8/JyP4Pw 728/g+zraz8B hoaG </data> </dict>

  • what is the difference between declarative and imperative programming

    - by Brad
I have been searching the web looking for a definition for declarative and imperative programming that would shed some light for me. However the language used at some of the resources that I have found is daunting - for instance at wikipedia. Does any one have a real world example that they could show me that might bring some perspective to this subject...perhaps in c# thanks

  • C# - Angle between two 2d vectors, diff between two methods?

    - by Sean Ochoa
    Hey all. I've got this code snippet, and I'm wondering why the results of the first method differ from the results of the second method, given the same input? public double AngleBetween_1(vector a, vector b) { var dotProd = a.Dot(b); var lenProd = Len*b.Len; var divOperation = dotProd/lenProd; return Math.Acos(divOperation) * (180.0 / Math.PI); } public double AngleBetween_2(vector a, vector b) { var dotProd = a.Dot(b); var lenProd = Len*b.Len; var divOperation = dotProd/lenProd; return (1/Math.Cos(divOperation)) * (180.0 / Math.PI); }

  • Rails ActiveResource Associations

    - by brad
I have some ARes models (see below) that I'm trying to use associations with (which seems to be wholly undocumented and maybe not possible but I thought I'd give it a try) So on my service side, my ActiveRecord object will render something like render :xml => @group.to_xml(:include => :customers) (see generated xml below) The models Group and Customers are HABTM On my ARes side, I'm hoping that it can see the <customers> xml attribute and automatically populate the .customers attribute of that Group object , but the has_many etc methods aren't supported (at least as far as I can tell) So I'm wondering how ARes does it's reflection on the XML to set the attributes of an object. In AR for instance I could create a def customers=(customer_array) and set it myself, but this doesn't seem to work in ARes. One suggestion I found for an "association" is the just have a method def customers Customer.find(:all, :conditions => {:group_id => self.id}) end But this has the disadvantage that it makes a second service call to look up those customers... not cool I'd like my ActiveResource model to see that the customers attribute in the XML and automatically populate my model. Anyone have any experience with this?? # My Services class Customer < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :groups end class Group < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :customer end # My ActiveResource accessors class Customer < ActiveResource::Base; end class Group < ActiveResource::Base; end # XML from /groups/:id?customers=true <group> <domain>some.domain.com</domain> <id type="integer">266</id> <name>Some Name</name> <customers type="array"> <customer> <active type="boolean">true</active> <id type="integer">1</id> <name>Some Name</name> </customer> <customer> <active type="boolean" nil="true"></active> <id type="integer">306</id> <name>Some Other Name</name> </customer> </customers> </group>

  • What is Ruby's analog to Python Metaclasses?

    - by Sean Copenhaver
Python has the idea of metaclasses that, if I understand correctly, allow you to modify an object of a class at the moment of construction. You are not modifying the class, but instead the object that is to be created then initialized. Python (at least as of 3.0 I believe) also has the idea of class decorators. Again if I understand correctly, class decorators allow the modifying of the class definition at the moment it is being declared. Now I believe there is an equivalent feature or features to the class decorator in Ruby, but I'm currently unaware of something equivalent to metaclasses. I'm sure you can easily pump any Ruby object through some functions and do what you will to it, but is there a feature in the language that sets that up like metaclasses do? So again, Does Ruby have something similar to Python's metaclasses? Edit I was off on the metaclasses for Python. A metaclass and a class decorator do very similar things it appears. They both modify the class when it is defined but in different manners. Hopefully a Python guru will come in and explain better on these features in Python. But a class or the parent of a class can implement a __new__(cls[,..]) function that does customize the construction of the object before it is initialized with __init__(self[,..]).

  • Why does Samba/CIFS suck so badly. [closed]

    - by sean
Seriously, machines refusing to save data because files THEY HAVE OPEN are locked BY THEMSELVES. Getting 200+ connections simultaneously takes it out despite a plethora of available disk and network bandwidth. You can't turn off CUPS you have to COMPILE WITHOUT IT. DFS support is completely broken and pretty much useless in the current state (as in DFS for load balancing, not replication). We should just move to NFS and find a DFS like namespace aggregator.

  • Why doesn't the F# Set implement ISet<T>?

    - by Sean Devlin
The .NET Framework is adding an ISet<T> interface with the 4.0 release. In the same release, F# is being added as a first-class language. F# provides an immutable Set<'T> class. It would seem logical to me that the immutable set provided would implement the ISet<T> interface, but it doesn't. Does anyone know why? My guess is that they didn't want to implement an interface intended to be mutable, but I don't think this explanation holds up. After all, their Map<'Key, 'Value> class implements IDictionary, which is mutable. And there are examples elsewhere in the framework of classes implementing interfaces that are only partially appropriate. My other thought is that ISet<T> is new, so maybe they didn't get around to it. But that seems kind of thin. Does the fact that ISet<T> is generic (v. IDictionary, which is not) have anything to do with it? Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

  • Changing Name Associated With Past Commits In Mercurial

    - by Sean M
A friend recently had the occasion for a legal name change, which made me wonder about how to cope with that in a development environment, especially in regards to source control. Their legal name changed, so naturally their login name and associated identity stuff changed. If they were a team member of mine, I'd like to change the record of their past commits to the project to be consistent with their new name. Is that possible in Mercurial? In other version control systems?

  • Vimeo - videos.getChannels

    - by brad
How can I efficiently retrieve a list of channels that a Vimeo video is listed in from the Advanced Vimeo API? The Advanced Vimeo API provides the methods channels.addVideo and channels.removeVideo for managing the channels a video belongs to. Also, the channels.getVideos method is provided for retrieving the list of videos belonging to a channel. However, there is no videos.getChannels method. This means that in order to find all the channels a video is included in one would need to call channels.getVideos (possibly more than once if the channel has more than 50 videos) for each channel of interest. This seems terribly inefficient.
