  • How to add a printer in gnome-shell

    I'm using Gnome Shell (although I'm not sure whether the "Printers" app is part of that or just part of Gnome). I go to "Printers" from the overview, click the + button on the bottom left, choose network and then see a message "FirewallD is not running. Network printer detection needs services mdns, ipp, ipp-client and samba-client enabled on firewall.". It's not auto detected anything. There's an Address box and a Search by Address tickbox, but neither seem to do anything. I'm frustrated because I know all the details of the printer, but have nowhere to put them in. Automation is supposed to make things easier, no? For example I know the printer is at lpd://10.67.5.3/lp1 but I can't put this in anywhere. Is there a GUI that works, or have I misunderstood how to use it?

    Hi all, I have these pdf files of c++code and they are colored which would be cool, except that the network printer here is b&w and the printed out codes come in various shades of pale grey which makes them essentially unreadable (specially the comments). I would like everything (text, codes, commands,...) to be printed in the same (black) color. i've tried fuddling with the printer's properties, but the closest thing i see is the 'level of grey' tab, and there i have the choice between 'enhanced' and 'normal' (and it doesn't make a difference in my case). i've tried 'print to file', but i don't see any options there to print to b&w, I've tried installing the 'generic cups printer', but again no options to print to b&w. any idea ? (i'm on 10.10)

  • Network printer gets disabled occasionally

    I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and have a HP-Laserjet-3005P network printer. Occasionally (perhaps related to rebooting) the printer, which is setup as the default printer, becomes disabled. After realizing that I'm not getting anything printed, I must then open printing preferences and click on "enabled". Then it prints happily until the next time that it becomes disabled... Any ideas why this is happening and/or how I could fix it? I know I'm giving very little information, I can't think of anything else to give...if there's something I should be providing, please let me know.

  • Printer Sharing Issue

    So I set up my printer on 12.10 to share via SAMBA. Windows 'sees' it, it will install it on windows (I have the printer driver installs but it asks for it in Windows default list.. ?), then I can print a test page to the ubuntu printer from Windows. But If I try to print something in Notepad/Wordpad it says 'Printing' but doesn't add it to the "See whats printing" list. If you do it in Google Chrome, however, it works. Any ideas?

  • Need Help Accessing the Vista Wampserver localhost from Virtual PC 2007 running an XP VM.

    (I had posted this on stack overflow but it was suggested there that I post it here instead). I have a Vista laptop on which I'm running wampserver. I have Virtual PC 2007 setup with Windows XP running on the VM. My goal is to be able to use the XP VM to run IE6 to view the localhost in the Vista wampserver. I'm not interested in having the XP VM have any access to the internet -- only to my Vista wampserver's localhost. The vista wampserver works fine. As suggested on a blog I read, I installed the loopback adapter on Vista and I set the loopback to 192.168.21.1 and I set the xp vm ip to 192.168.21.2. I am able to successfully ping the vista-loopback adapter from the xp vm. I've turned the wampserver to "server online", and I've disabled the firewalls in both the vista host and the xp vm. But for some reason, I still can't seem to get the virtual XP to see the localhost on the vista wampserver. I've tried using the vista //name, and I've tried the ip 192.168.21.1 directly and with the port. For whatever its worth, I'm not able to see anything under the XM VM's network places (though I don't know if I'm supposed to be able to see anything). So at this point I'm stuck and I'm still not sure how to get this XP VM to "talk" to my vista wampserver localhost. Any advice on how to fix this problem is much appreciated.   • restrict access to IIS virtual directory from root website

    I have two domains (domain1.com and domain2.com). Both of them use the same Windows hosting server with IIS7. One of the domains is being called the "primary domain" by my hosting provider (GoDaddy) and it always points to the root folder that I was given. For the other domain, I have created a virtual directory in IIS and pointed it there. The folder structure is like this - root/ --Default.aspx --SomeFile.aspx --domain2folder/ ----Default.aspx ----Domain2SomeFile.aspx So, if I type domain1.com, I see the regulakr Default.aspx. But if I type domain2.com, I am shown the contents of domain2folder as if it were a separate web application - I think that is what IIS virtual directory is meant for. Well and good. But the problem is, when I type http://domain1.com/domain2folder, I see the domain2's website! But I don't want that to be shown when I use the path like that from domain1. Only if they use domain2.com, user should be able to see those contents. How can I do that? Hope I am making sense. Thanks.

  • IIS / Virtual Directory authentication.

    I have an IIS(v6)/Windows 2003/.Net 3.5(app code, libraries etc.) server hosting a website at www.mywebsite.com mapped to E:\Inetpub\wwwroot\mywebsite, we also have a virtual directory (VirtDir) mapped out to E:\Inetpub\wwwroot\mywebsite\files (although in theory this could be in a different directory or a separate machine) where we store a customer's files(a bunch of .pdf & .xls). Currently to access a file you can enter into the url something like: www.mywebsite.com/VirtDir/Customer/myFile.pdf and get access to the file. The problem is the user doesn't have to log into www.mywebsite.com to get access to the file, we would prefer them to log in first. We would like the user to login via the mywebsite and if valid, let them download files from the virtual directory. The www.mywebsite.com and VirtDir are separate sites on the same farm. Allow Anon Access, and Integrated Windows Authentication both enabled. I'm more of a developer and less of a Sys Admin, but hopefully I'm in the right spot, any help would be appreciated.

  • Why does clicking on Windows 7 Printer Properties Result In Driver Not Installed?

    The question I need to ask is has anyone heard of getting a "driver not installed" error when clicking on a printer's properties on Windows 7, and is there a workaround? Here are the details of the problem. One of our users has a Windows 7 desktop, and an HP LaserJet 4050 T connected to via a parallel-to-usb converter. The PLC5 universal driver was installed for series 4050 printers. I needed to install the PLC 6 driver, which completed successfully. The user is an administrator of the system, and I was prompted to and accepted running as Administrator to install the driver. After the install, I went to see the 4050's properties and was prompted that the PLC6 driver was not installed. I believe the PLC6 driver was installed, because the PLC5 driver resulted in receiving an official HP error page indicating the printer was "not set up for collating" as the second page of printing two copies of a one page email. This problem did not occur with the PLC 6 driver. Oddly enough, setting back to PLC5 produced the same error about the PLC5 driver not being installed. I ignored/dismissed the error box (did not re-install the driver), and reproduced the error, with the second page being the HP not set up for collating error page. Any thoughts on what is causing this and how to clear it would be appreciated. The closest fix I could find was on a Microsoft tech page, and they had me clear winsock out of a Administrator run command line, followed by a reboot. That did not fix the problem.     Here is my situation. I have a server with 2 NICs. I have installed virtual box and I have created a few Guest Operating Systems on it. I want these Virtual Machines to be using a bridge.NIC2 would be used to setup this bridge and NIC1 would be connected to corporate network.I am not clear with how should I go on doing this. /etc/network/interfaces is the file which I am trying to modify etc. My approach is following 1) Define a configuration file /etc/network/interfaces 2) Create IPTABLES as how NIC1 will forward the packets to Bridge on NIC2 Now comes the problem I do not understand what is the meaning of following lines in the configuration file auto lo iface lo inet loopback # The primary network interface auto eth2 iface eth2 inet manual auto br0 iface br0 inet static address 192.168.1.14 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.1.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255 gateway 192.168.1.10 # dns-* options are implemented by the resolvconf package, if installed dns-nameservers 192.168.13.2 dns-search myserver.net bridge_ports eth2 bridge_fd 9 bridge_hello 2 bridge_maxage 12 bridge_stp off So any pointers to what should be the entries of /etc/network/interfaces file. So that I understand which parameter is to be used when and where that would help me.

  • Virtual machine lost after power cut

    We have just had a power issue and our ESX (ESXi 4.1.0) host lost power and then rebooted. All but one of the virtual servers have rebooted with no problem, however one of them refused to power up. I try to power it on and I get the following error: File <unspecified filename> was not found Reason: The system cannot find the file specified. Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/4e03076e-90834647-b846-001185c38f42/LAMP- Stack/turnkey-lamp-11.3-lucid-x86.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. VMware ESX cannot find the virtual disk "/vmfs/volumes/4e03076e-90834647-b846- 001185c38f42/LAMP-Stack/turnkey-lamp-11.3-lucid-x86.vmdk". Verify the path is valid and try again. I have logged into the ESX host to see if the file is there an have found only the following file that matches the filename: /vmfs/volumes/4e03076e-90834647-b846-001185c38f42/LAMP-Stack/turnkey-lamp-11.3-l ucid-x86-s001.vmdk I notice that the above file has '-s001' after the filename. Is this recoverable? Any help of advice is greatly appreciated! EDIT: Running ls -l on the directory that contains the file shows this: drwxr-xr-t 1 root root 1680 Feb 9 09:49 4e03076e-90834647-b846-001185c38f42 The databrowser file system looks like this: and in a different directory there is the file that matches the missing one:

  • I want to build a Virtual Machine, are there any good references?

    I'm looking to build a Virtual Machine as a platform independent way to run some game code (essentially scripting). The Virtual Machines that I'm aware of in games are rather old: Infocom's Z-Machine, LucasArts' SCUMM, id Software's Quake 3. As a .net Developer, I'm familiar with the CLR and looked into the CIL Instructions to get an overview of what you actually implement on a VM Level (vs. the language level). I've also dabbled a bit in 6502 Assembler during the last year. The thing is, now that I want¹ to implement one, I need to dig a bit deeper. I know that there are stack based and register based VMs, but I don't really know which one is better at what and if there are more or hybrid approaches. I need to deal with memory management, decide which low level types are part of the VM and need to understand why stuff like ldstr works the way it does. My only reference book (apart from the Z-Machine stuff) is the CLI Annotated Standard, but I wonder if there is a better, more general/fundamental lecture for VMs? Basically something like the Dragon Book, but for VMs? I'm aware of Donald Knuth's Art of Computer Programming which uses a register-based VM, but I'm not sure how applicable that series still is, especially since it's still unfinished? Clarification: The goal is to build a specialized VM. For example, Infocom's Z-Machine contains OpCodes for setting the Background Color or playing a sound. So I need to figure out how much goes into the VM as OpCodes vs. the compiler that takes a script (language TBD) and generates the bytecode from it, but for that I need to understand what I'm really doing. ¹ I know, modern technology would allow me to just interpret a high level scripting language on the fly. But where is the fun in that? :) It's also a bit hard to google because Virtual Machines is nowadays often associated with VMWare-type OS Virtualization...

  • Virtual Box state not saving upon restart/reset/shutdown - reverting to an earlier state

    Every time I restart/shut down my VM in VirtualBox (image is Ubuntu 10.02), whenever I start it back up, it reverts to the state it was in after I installed Guest Additions. This is extremely frustrating as every time I make progress on a project, whenever it restarts (mostly from crashing), I have to redo mostly everything. Is this a known problem with Guest Additions or with Virtual Box in general, and if so is there some solution?

  • VMWare ESXi virtual machine can contact the gateway but not the DNS server

    I am having a bit of a strange issue. I have a VMWare ESXi server with two virtual machines running on it. They are running just fine and can communicate on the network without a problem. I am now trying to add a third. I am installing Ubuntu 8.04 Server. I assign it a static IP address and it's a fresh installation. Once installed I can ping the gateway but I cannot ping the DNS server. It's on the same network with the other two VMs which are communicating just fine. I have tried to reinstall the operating system but it still fails to connect. Here is /etc/network/interfaces auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.23 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.1.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255 gateway 192.168.1.1 dns-nameservers 208.67.222.222 #opendns dns-search mydomain.com Here is route Destination | Gateway | Genmask | Flags | Metric | Ref | Use | Iface localnet | * | 255.255.255.0 | U | 0 | 0 | 0 | eth0 default | 192.168.1.1 | 0.0.0.0 | UG | 100 | 0 | 0 | eth0 Since I'm running this behind a FortiGate this is what the sniff command gives me when I try to ping 208.67.222.222 arp who-has 192.168.1.1 tell 192.168.1.23 arp reply 192.168.1.1 is-at MAC 192.168.1.23 -> 208.67.222.222: icmp: echo request 192.168.1.23 -> 208.67.222.222: icmp: echo request 192.168.1.23 -> 208.67.222.222: icmp: echo request 192.168.1.23 -> 208.67.222.222: icmp: echo request 192.168.1.23 -> 208.67.222.222: icmp: echo request As you can see it looks like I never get a response. One interesting thing I notice is the arp reply's MAC doesn't look right. I have cleared the FortiGate's ARP cache though and checked the entry and it seems correct. The MAC it lists is the one for the router. In the process I removed the saved credentials, which are just a default local login to the VM. I need to know how to set this so that the VM auto logs in with the domain account credentials used to log into the physical computer. Google hasn't helped me find the answer.

    I am having trouble using my guest (Windows XP SP3) to communicate over TCP/IP to the host computer (Windows 7) using Virtual PC 2007. I have WAMPServer running on my host, and want to be able to access the websites on there from my guest OS. What do I do to make this work? What is the IP address of the host computer when using Shared Networking? As far as I can tell "Internal Networking" won't work, because that only allows communication between the guests, not between a guest and the host.
