  • ASP.NET Deploying websites

    I have some websites that use ImageMagick to convert images and place them in a created folder. Locally it all worked fine, but once I deployed it to my network's webserver it would not convert the images nor create the folders. My asp.net pages that read data from a database work. All the users have full control permissions over the site. I don't know if I need to modify the Web.config or some other permissions. Maybe it has to do with ImageMagick. I've just run out of ideas on what the problem could even POSSIBLY be. Any suggestions?

  • Facebook insights for websites does not match on-site Facebook button counts

    I use Facebook Insights for websites and Facebook buttons on my site. However, the data reported by the two do not match. It always seems to be the case that the count reported by the buttons is significantly higher than the count reported in Facebook Insights. For example, this page http://www.appmyworld.com/blog/top-5-iphone-and-ipad-apps-of-the-week-10412.html has a count of 52 for Facebook which is made up of 19 likes, 21 shares and 12 comments according to AddThis and confirmed by http://sharedcount.com However, going into Facebook Insights for my website and looking at that specific page it shows only 4 total actions which is made up of 1 like and 3 shares. At the very least I would expect it to show a total count of 40 made up of 19 likes and 21 shares (I'm not sure it would track the 12 comments). Any thoughts on why this may be happening? My concern is if our website is not getting credit for the Facebook activity?

  • How to design websites for all display sizes

    I like to use a lot of unique graphics on my pages, which often results in making different page sizes depending on available screen width/height. Here are two examples: http://www.uvm.edu/~areid/homesite/ - the image floats at the bottom of my screen but on a larger browser, the image floats near the middle making it look off. It looks best when the bottom of the window aligns with the bottom of the image www.stevenlebel.com - it loads two different pages depending on what monitor size is detected. This seems like a lot of redundant coding. My question is, how can I make sliced/Photoshop images transition well to different screen sizes. Does Photoshop allow you to make DIVS instead of tables? Can i make each of the slices created by Photoshop grow/shrink when the browser window size changes? If anyone has any input on creating websites like this I would be very interested to hear what they have to say. Thanks Katie

  • Display list of websites on local IIS server in a web page

    Hey Guys, I am currently trying to figure out a way to list all of the websites that are running on a local IIS 6 server at the office and display links to each site with their descriptions so we can always find our development sites with ease. The way that the server is currently set up is I add a DNS record for a new site. eg: newsite.company.local and then add it to IIS. This way all the users in our office can access this site via their browser and developers can test, admins can review etc etc. What I want to do now is automatically generate a webpage with a list of all of the sites running on iis and have it be available across the network. I have never looked into this before and have no idea where to start.. help! Thanks :)

    Hello im developing some backends in ASP.NET 2.0 and i have put all the images in Cache, GZIPED my CSS, JS files and everything to speedup the load of each options. the performance its good and i have no problems with the clients but i want "MORE" fast loads and im looking for some recomendations. Is important to mention that those websites are using only in intranets so im thinking to implement my next projects using IFRAME for content that way (i think) the options will be loading faster because they not have to load the entire site. any help / recomendations? thanks in advance.

    On websites where you have to enter a user name and password, I notice that I can browse the site with one browser and it will know who I am no matter where I go on the site. But if I open a different browser it doesn't know who I am in that browser unless I log on in that browser. After I log in to a website, does it store some kind of cookie in my browser, and every time I navigate to a different page on that site, it checks the cookie for my identity? What would happen if I logged in, and then before browsing to a different page on the site, deleted the cookie?

    About twice a month I get asked to justify the reason "Why are we using ASP.NET and not PHP or Java, or buzz-word-of-the-month-here, etc". 100% of the time the questions come from people that do not understand anything about technology. People that would not know the difference between FTP and HTTP. The best approach I found (so far) to justify it to people without getting into technical details is to just say "XXX website uses it". Which I get back "Oh...I did not know that, so ASP.NET must be good". I know, I know, it hurts. But it works. So, without getting into the merit of why I'm using ASP.NET (which could trigger an endless argument for other platforms), I'm trying to compile a list of high profile websites that are implemented in ASP.NET.     I've uploaded a .cshtml website to a surftown server, and I got some problems running the code. But I have a problem with it running the Razor code.   • code to ping websites works sometimes ...

    I'm testing out a piece of code to ping a bunch of websites I own on a regular basis, to make sure they're up. I'm using rails and so far I have this hideous test action that I'm using to try it out (see below). The problem though, is that sometimes it works, and other times it won't ... sometimes it runs through the code just fine, other times, it seems to completely ignore the begin/rescue block ... a. I need help figuring out what the problem is b. And refactoring this to make it look respectable.   • Setting up padding for websites in mobile devices

    I had finished this website a while ago but something happened to it and I've now spent all day fixing it and getting it back from scratch as my backup wasn't correctly done. I don't quite understand what it's doing as I've done this technique on many other websites with no troubles, maybe I've looked at this website too long? Here is the website. I'm wanting to put some space on the left and right hand side, however I dont just have one container as I was needing the dark grey bar at 100% of the screen and always under the banner no matter where it was. So there are 4 "containing" divs that I want to have the space. I've placed soem CSS3 media queries in but now I'm getting a gap to the right. I was thinking it was because my background mages are going all the way across but they set at 100% so I'm just not understanding whats going on. It's somethign simple, I'm not seeing it right now..     Hi all, I'm using Git to manage my website's source code and deployment, and currently have the test and live sites running on the same box. So a few questions: IS this safe? Would a better approach be to have my base repository be the test site repository (with corresponding working directory), and then have that repository push changes to a new live site repository, which has a corresponding working directory to the live site base? This would also allow me to move the production to a different server and keep the deployment chain intact. Is there something I'm missing? Is there a different, clean way to differentiate between test and production deployments when using Git for managing websites? As an additional note in light of Vi's answer, is there a good way to do this that would handle deletions without mucking with the file system much?   • Preserving text formatting for dynamic website

    Hello Folks, I am facing a problem while creating a dynamic website. I am building it for some pharma company, which have many products. The problem is, every product have different sections of description, and have to be formatted differently. I wanted to store all the product descriptions in the database, but at the same time preserve the formatting of each description. I also plan to provide an admin interface, where they could edit the product information themselves. I could use Joomla or any other CMS for that purpose, but i wanted to know if i want to build such a system of my own, where i could format the text in an editor and them save that thing into database and when i retrieve it, i get the same formatting.   • Website often sticks, but clicking the link again everything loads fine

    Hi I have a website, which normally is very fast, however in the last week or two we're run into a problem whereby randomly if you click a link the browser will just sit there with the throbber spinning but the page doesn't appear to load If you click the link again it then responds straight away This doesn't seem to be limited to Chrome, Firefox or IE as we've tried all with all having same problems The site is build in ASP and connects to a MySQL database and runs on a dedicated windows 2003 server The firewalls were changed in the data centre recently to pixies but I've not been able to reproduce the problem outside of the office Within the office, we have 11 people (only 7 today and still experiencing problems) connected to a 7MB ADSL connection with Eclipse I have made some changes to the network in the office, namely wiring 4 desks back to the main 24 port switch rather than to small 5 port which then linked on to the 24 port switch... however we were having problems before this was done, and I did this to try and rule out an issue with the switch We have a backup ADSL connection, so I may try switching to that, or switching to a different router, but do you think this is a likely issue? Failing that, what else would you check? Thanks, sorry for length! Dave

    There should be a standard for saving viewing bunches of webpages as a website. For instance, say I have a whole bunch of pages, such as I get from the WordPress plugin "Really Static" which saves an entire site, and I have all the links start with a slash. Now, I can't really use those links if I am reading it from the file system. If there would be a standard where we could zip up files, give them a unique extension (like "hzip" for html zip), and open the file with any browser, which would display it as though the root of that file were the root of the pages. "http://example.com" The links would all work right. This would facilitate sharing and copying groups of webpages.

The comments are stored in a different table from the stories. The code above does not return any values and doesn't show any errors. Could someone please help?

I am saying this because when I talked with my teacher, he said that major sites use many languages combined. And he said that a site shouldn't be designed only in PHP. So is it possible to create a good website, not e-commerce, with only html,css, and php?
