• OpenVPN via DD-WRT

  I am using DD-WRT with my Buffalo G300NH. I notice in my log files: Wed Oct 10 01:08:25 2012 us=343000 Cannot open /tmp/openvpn/dh.pem for DH parameters: error:02001003:system library:fopen:No such process: error:2006D080:BIO routines:BIO_new_file:no such file I have looked at other answers regarding this error. I have tried to no avail. 755 are chmod rights to /tmp/openvpn. At this point, I can not connect outside my LAN via OpenVPN. • Postgresql server will not start

  I'm on Windows 7. I restarted my computer. I then tried to connect to the database and got an error. I don't remember which one in particular but it was some connection issue. I decided to try to restart the server, so I clicked on "Restart server" from the start menu. This blocked. After a few minutes I killed the process and tried again, only to get a "The service is starting or stopping. Please try again later." message. I rebooted the computer again, tried to start again, and got the same error. I killed the pg_ctl process and tried starting it manually, but that didn't work either: C:\Users\DrClaud>cscript "C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.3\scripts\serverctl.vbs" start wait Microsoft (R) Windows Script Host Version 5.8 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. The PostgreSQL Server 8.3 service is starting................................... ....................................... The PostgreSQL Server 8.3 service could not be started. • SQL Server slow in production environment

  I have a weird problem in a customer's production environment. I can't give any details on the infrastructure, except that SQL server runs on a virtual server. The data, log and filestream file are on another storage server (data and filestream together and log on a separate server). In our local Test environment, there's one particular query that executes with these durations: first we clear the cache 300ms (First time it takes longer, but from then on it's cached.) 20ms 15ms 17ms In the customer's production environment, the SQL Server is more powerful, these are the durations (I didn't have the rights to clear the cache. Will try this tomorrow). 2500ms 2600ms 2400ms The servers in the customer's production environment are more powerful but they do have virtual servers (we don't). What could be the cause... Not enough memory? Fragmentation? Physical storage? How would you tackle this performance problem? EDIT: Some people have asked me if the data set is equal and it is. I restored their database on our environment. It's true that this was the first thing I looked at. (@Everyone: I added the edit because it will be the first thing that many will think off).

• Creating fillable, saveable PDF in OpenOffice.org results in garbage

  I've been creating beautiful fillable PDFs using OOo Writer under Ubuntu for a few years. However, I've recently been asked to make them saveable rather than just printable. So, I go to my colleague's Windows computer which has Adobe Acrobat Professional 8, and following directions outlined in Save filled form in PDF file in Ubuntu. I end up with an unreadable, unfillable document. Acrobat Reader opens it, but it's garbage. It looks like it might be a character encoding issue. The document was created using Arial under Ubuntu. I installed OOo on the Windows box and changed the font to Tahoma. But with either font, the resulting file is a jumble of boxes and oddly placed random characters. Given that it fails with a fairly ubiquitous font, and a Microsoft specific font, I'm guessing it's not a font issue. Until I enable the rights, the PDF is readable both with Acrobat Reader and Acrobat Pro. Anyone else encounter the problem? If so, did you solve it? Thanks.

• Is there a way to tell SGE to run specific jobs as root on the execution node?

  The title kinda says it all... We're using SGE/OGE to submit jobs to a set of worker nodes that then do things with specific pieces of equipment. The programs and scripts that have been created that manipulate this equipment rely on running as root. I'd like SGE to handle allocation of resources in a way that is mindful of users, groups, projects, etc., but I also need the actual jobs to run with root permissions. I've read up on How can one run a prologue script as root in gridengine? to see if anything there was pertinent, but it seems that SGE is providing the "user@" kind of spec specifically for prolog and epilog kinds of actions. Is there any similar functionality for the job itself? I'm aware of su/sudo approaches, but that won't really work in this environment because the sudoers file isn't globally managed (i.e. I'd have to add a whole set of users to /etc/sudoers on lots of machines). I'm currently looking into a setuid kind of solution, but that would definitely be an unnecessary kind of work-around if SGE provides me a way to declare that a specific job (or jobs in a specific queue) always needs to run with a specific user's rights.

• Cannot open files in Visual Studio but in Delphi and Notepad

  About an hour ago Visual Studio 2008 decided that it cannot find files any more. This is on 64 bit Windows Vista. When I right-click on a text file (source code or otherwise) and select "open with" and "Visual Studio 2008", I get the following error (example): Windows cannot find 'C:\Users\ajbrehm\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\Hello Prism\Hello Prism\Main.pas'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. When I right-click the same file and select "open with" and "Delphi 2010" or "Notepad" (both other options available for text files on my system), the file opens correctly. Oddly enough when the file is part of a Visual Studio project and I open the project itself with Visual Studio (this works), I can open the file from within Visual Studio. Any ideas what might be going on? This started about an hour after I made a complete backup of my Vista VM and after I installed IIS 7, SQL Express, and Sourcegear Vault. The first files I noticed couldn't be opened in Visual Studio any more where Pascal source files in checked-outed folders from Vault. And Vault also seems to be unable to see one of the sources files and claims they don't exist. I found out about Visual Studio not opening ANY files any more when I tried to recreate the file Vault refused to see. Update: I just checked. Another user, "administrator", can still open text files with Visual Studio 2008. Both users have administrator rights. Update: I just restored the hours-old backup. Same problem. Apparently whatever triggered this happened before the install of IIS 7 and SQL Express. Never noticed it before.

• Windows Server 2008 Create Symbolic Link, updated Security Policy still gives privilege error

  Windows Server 2008, RC2. I am trying to create a symbolic/soft link using the mklink command: mklink /D LinkName TargetDir e.g. c:\temp\>mklink /D foo bar This works fine if I run the command line as Administrator. However, I need it to work for regular users as well, because ultimately I need another program (executing as a user) to be able to do this. So, I updated the Local Security Policy via secpol.msc. Under "Local Policies" "User Rights Management" "Create symbolic links", I added "Users" to the security setting. I rebooted the machine. It still didn't work. So I added "Everyone" to the policy. Rebooted. And STILL it didn't work. What on earth am I doing wrong here? I think my user is even an Administrator on this box, and running plain command line even with this updated policy in place still gives me: You do not have sufficient privilege to perform this operation.

• Unable to connect to Samba printer

  I have a headless Ubuntu 12.04 server for files and printers. It shares files via Samba just fine. However, the HP PSC-750xi connected to the server via USB is not accessible from my Ubuntu 12.04 laptop. I can browse for it in the Printing control panel, but any attempt to authenticate my ID to the printer with my user credentials results in the error "This print share is not accessible". I have included the Samba smb.conf file below. Any help appreciated. Thanks...   After installing the October 2011 recommended patch bundle on a Solaris 10 the host fails to boot. The output is {0} ok boot SC Alert: Host System has Reset screen not found. keyboard not found.   I'm trying to use WIM2VHD according to the instructions on Scott Hanselman's blog post to create a Sysprepped VHD image to boot from. I've installed the WAIK, and I have my Windows 7 sources mounted as a virtual drive. • How do I stop MSYS from transforming my compiler options?

  Is there a way to stop MSYS/MinGW from transforming what it thinks are paths on my command lines? I have a project that's using nmake & Microsoft Visual Studio 2003 (yeecccch). I have the build system all ported and ready to go for GNU make (and tested with Cygwin). Something weird is happening to my compiler flags when I try to compile in an MSYS environment, though. Here's a simplified example: $ cl /nologo Microsoft (R) 32-bit C/C++ Optimizing Compiler Version 13.10.6030 for 80x86 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. /out:nologo.exe C:/msys/1.0/nologo LINK : fatal error LNK1181: cannot open input file 'C:/msys/1.0/nologo.obj' As you can see, MSYS is transforming the /nologo compiler switch into a windows path, and then sending that to the compiler. I really don't want this to happen - in fact I'd be happy if MSYS never transformed any paths - my build system had to take care of all that when I first ported to Cygwin. Is there a way to make that happen? It does work to change the command to $ cl -nologo Which produces the expected results, but this build system is very large and very painful to update. I really don't want to have to go in and change every use of a / for a flag to a -. In particular, there may be tools that don't support the use of the - at all, and then I'll really be stuck. • Joining two routers together, but I have no access to the second router, although I know it's IP address and Gateway

  I have temporarily moved into a rented apartment for 4 months, which has wireless. The trouble I am having is that the access points here are wifi only and no RJ45 and I need to use RJ45 to connect some equipment that I am working with. I have purchased an RT-N66U and installed Tomato (shibby ver. 1.28) and successfully replaced the existing access point, but now I want to enable the access point that I have replaced as it links wirelessly to 3 others. Can I plug in a cable from the access point to my RT-N66U and get it to access the internet via my router? I have no access to the existing wireless access point, and don't want to reset it as it's not mine. There is another router situated in the roof somewhere which I also have no access to, but it's supplying my RT-N66U internet and I most definitely have a double-nat, which although isn't the best way of doing things I am limited with what I can do. Any suggestions on routing tables, vlans etc would be helpful, but I have no experience in these fields before - but I know the tomato firmware can cater for this. My router is set to IP 10.0.1.1 and dhcp is 10.0.1.100-200 The wireless access point address was 192.168.1.2 but this was assigned by the router in the roof which has the address 192.168.1.1. There is a cable from this router going to a wall socket which I now have my RT-N66u attached to via the WAN port. I understand it's scruffy and it isn't the way to do things but I have tried to ask for the admin details but as the wireless network is looked after by a third party and nobody knows their details I am stuck with this dilemma. I could buy three wireless access points and replace the existing but this isn't what I want to do, and although I have installed plenty of DD-WRT wireless repeater bridges they simply don't work here for some unknown reason. The phone line here is very noisy too and I don't have the rights to install ADSL in a building that isn't mine, and 3G coverage isn't good enough either. Thanks for your time

  Scheduled task does not run on Windows 2003 server on VMWare. The same setup runs fine on standalone server. Test below explains the problem. We really need to run a more complex bat file, but this shows the issue. I have a bat file that copies a file from server A to server B. I use full path name, no drive mapping. Runs fine on server B from command prompt. I created a task that runs this bat file under a domain id with password that is part of administrator group on both servers. Task runs fine from Scheduled task screen, and as a scheduled task as long as somebody is logged into the server. If nobody is logged in, the task does not run. There is no error message in Task Scheduler log, just an entry that the task started, bit no entry for finish or an error code. To add insult to injury, if the task copies a file in the opposite direction, from server B to server A, it runs fine as a scheduled unattended task. If I copy a file from server B to server B, the task also runs fine unattended, I recreated exactly the same setup on a standalone server. No issues at all. I checked obvious things like the task has "run only as logged in" unchecked, domain id has run as a batch job privilege and logon rights, Task Scheduler service runs as a local system, automatic start. Any suggestions?

• PORT FORWARDING TO PUT MY WEB SERVER ON THE INTERNET

  I went to http://canyouseeme.org/ to check to see what my external IP address. Regardless of what port I enter, it tells me that the port is blocked. I have a LinkSys router that basically has the default settings with the exception that I have WEP encrptin setup and I have forwarded a few ports, including 80 and 69. I forwarded them to the 192.x.x.103 IP address of the PC which is running IIS. That PC runs Symantec Endpoint Protection, which I right mouse clicked in the tray to Disable. These steps used to make my PC visible so I could host my own web site in IIS on port 80, or some other port, like 69. Yet, the Open Port tool cannot see my IP when it checks eiether port and when I navigate to http://my external ip/ I get "page cant be displayed" At first I was thinking that maybe Comcast is blocking port 80, but 69 doesnt work eiether. I do not see any other blockking set up in my router and, as I mentioned, I went with teh defaults except where discussed. This is a corporate PC and Symantec End Point Protecion is new to it (this previously worked on teh same PC with Symantec Protection Agent), but I thought that disabling Sym End Pt from the tray, that that would effectively neutralize it. I do not have the rights to kill the program itself. Any suggestions on what else to try to make my PC externally visible?

  I am trying to find a way of authenticating users on public computers through GDM, but I have a few things to be taken in account. The users do not have a login/password, they only thing they are given is a string. This string is unique and will allow us to identify them. You can see this string as a login without a password. The users must be present in a remote database The users must have the rights to login on the computer they are on at that time. A remote database would check if a booking on the computer had been set for that time by that user. Or if no booking had been made, allow to login. A default user id/home/gid has to be set to the user once logged in I have found ways to deal with most of those requirements, but not altogether. PAM looks nice to set up a custom way of checking if the user booked its computer. NSS MySQL looks nice to set up the environment. Would you know how to set up the environment by myself using a custom PAM module (using pam_python would be preferred)? Or any other method that could help me? Thanks in advance!

  Hi! This is seems to be "hardware" and not "software" / "programming" question, but I need to use this share in my programs, so it is "close to programming". We had an XP based wireless network. The server is XP Professional, the clients are XP Home (Notebooks). This was working well with folder sharing (with user rights, not simple share). Then we replaced the one of the notebook with Win7/X64 notebook. First time this can reach the server, and the another client too. Later I went to another sites, and connect to another servers, another networks. And then, when I return to this network, I saw that I cannot connect to this server. Nothing of resources I see, and when try to dbl click on this computer, I got login window, where I can write anything, never I can login... The interesting part, that: Another XP home can see the server, can login as quest, or with other user. The server can see the XP home notebook. The Win7 can see the notebook's shared folders, and XP home can see the Win7 shared folders. The server can see the Win7 folders, BUT: the Win7 cannot see the server folders. Cannot see the resources too... The Win7 is in "work networking group", the group name is not mshome. I tried everything on the server, I tried to remove MS client, restore it with simple sharing, set guest password, etc., but I lost the possibilities to access this server from Win7. • Setting up vncserver on OpenSolaris zone

  I am running OpenSolaris 5.10 and set up a sparse zone(inherits most of bin directories from global zone). I ended up copying many etc and var files from global zone, eventually most of the stuff(firefox,gvim, etc.) working through ssh via X11. However, I am having problems setting up vncserver on the zone. • finding the user - without knowing the innards of IIS

  Place of crime is WinSrv2008 with IIS7. My IIS apppool user is trying to create a folder but fails. How do I find out which User it is? Let's say I don't know much about IIS7 and Aspnet but need to trace whatever is happening through tools. So I fire up Sysinternals/ProcessMonitor to find out what is happening. I find Access denied on a folder just as I suspected. But which user? I add the User column to the output or ProcessMonitor and it says IIS Apppool\Defaultapppool in capitals. Well... that isn't a user is it? If I go to IIS and its Apppools and Advanced settings and Process model and Identity I can see clues about which user it is but that is only because I know IIS. What if it had been Apache or LightHttpd or whatever? How do I see the user to give the appropriate rights to?

  I'm trying to set up SSH tunneling on a remote web server to another MySQL server so that the database can be browsed easily with MySQL Query Browser. I'm following this page but cannot connect to the MySQL server. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/access-your-mysql-server-remotely-over-ssh/ What I've done: logged in to the web server with Putty via SSH. typed ssh -L 33060:[database]:3306 [myusername]@[webserver_address] where [...]s are altered by the actual information.
