• Project Server 2007 install issue - ProjectEventService won't start

  Trying to install PS2007 with SP1 on Server 2003. The install goes fine, but when running the SharePoint Configuration Wizard, it fails at stage 6 of 12 with the error: Failed to register SharePoint Services. An exception of type System.InvalidOperationException was thrown. Additional exception information: Cannot start service ProjectEventService on computer '.'. From the PSCDiagnostics log: Exception: System.InvalidOperationException: Cannot start service ProjectEventService on computer '.'. --- System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. The ProjectEventService (Microsoft Office Project Server Event) won't even start manually using the Network Service account. Starting the service with a domain account works, but subsequently running the Config Wizard causes the service to be removed and re-provisioned to run using the Network Service account, which again fails. Presumably Network Service needs elevated permissions, but even adding it to the local Admin group makes no difference. Anyone come across this sort of issue before?

Since Exception is technology-specific, it cannot be propagated to other clients. Exception is of many types. Exception must be converted from technology-specific information to natural information that can be communicated to the client. • Wacom consumer tablet driver service may crash while opening Bamboo Preferences, often after resuming computer from sleep

  One of the ExpressKeys on my Wacom Bamboo Capture graphics tablet is mapped to Bamboo Preferences, so that I can quickly access the tablet settings and view the battery level (I have the Wireless Accessory Kit installed). However, when I connect the tablet to the computer, in wired or wireless mode, and attempt to open Bamboo Preferences, the Wacom consumer tablet driver service may crash, most often when I try to do so after resuming the computer from sleep. There is usually no direct indication of the crash (although I once did get Tablet Service for consumer driver stopped working and was closed), only that the cursor shows that the system is busy for a split second. When this happens, the pen no longer tracks on the screen when in proximity of the tablet (even though it is detected by the tablet itself); however, touch continues to function correctly. To recover from this condition, I need to restart the tablet driver services. I got tired of having to go through Task Manager to restart the service every time this happens, so I ended up writing the following command script, with a shortcut on the desktop for running it with elevated privileges: net stop TabletServicePen net start TabletServicePen net stop TouchServicePen net start TouchServicePen Is there something I can do to prevent these crashes from happening in the first place, or do I have have to deal with this issue until the driver is updated? • No endpoint listening at.........

  I was having some very frustrating behaviour on our build server and while I found a number of articles online with similar error messages none of them helped me.  I thought I would just explain this here incase if helps me or anyone else in future.The error message we were getting is:There was no endpoint listening at http://localhostStubs.ExternalApplication/SampleService.svc that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. See InnerException, if present, for more detailsOur scenario is as follows:We have a solution where a WCF service application hosting the WCF routing service is listening to the Windows Azure Service Bus Relay.  We have an acceptance test project in the solution which sends a message to the service bus which is then received by the WCF routing service and routed to SampleService.svc which is hosted in another IIS application on the same box.  A response is flowed back through to the test.  In the tests there are 5 scenarios simulating a successful message, and various error conditions.  On my developer machine it was working absolutely fine every time, and a clean build on my developer machine worked fine.  On the build server however one or more of the tests would fail each time with the above error message.  There didnt seem to be any pattern to which test would fail.The solution was building on a Windows 2008 R2 machine with IIS 7 and AppFabric Server installed with auto-start configured for the IIS Application which would be listening to service bus.After lots of searching online and looking at logs etc it turned out to be a simple solution to just restart the WAS service (Windows Process Activation Service) and the services it advised you to restart with it.  Hope this helps someone else

  On one of the final talks about SQL Azure in Day 3 of PDC09, David Robinson, Senior PM on the Azure team, announced a project codenamed ‘Houston’ which is basically a Silverlight equivalent of SQL Server Management Studio. The concept comes from the SQL Azure being within the cloud, and if the only way to interact with it is by installing SSMS locally then it does not feel like a consistent story. From the limited preview, it only contains the basics but it clearly lets you create tables, stored procedures and views, edit them, even add data to tables in a grid view reminiscent of Microsoft Access. The UI was based around the standard ribbon bar, object window on the left and working pane on the right. As of now this tool is still pre-alpha and it seems like a basic tool that will facilitate rapid database development on cloud. When asked about general availability, no dates were given but calendar 2010 was indicated as the target. • Service Unavailable - App Pool disabled error...anyone know why?

  Hi guys A small number of our sites intermediately experience an error that is a mystery to us. Our set up is: Windows Server 2003 IIS6 .NET 3.5 We have about 35 Websites running on IIS Each site has it's own App Pool Each App Pool has the identity: Network Service The symptom is: The Application Pool for a site stops, and when you browse to the site, you only see: SERVICE UNAVAILABLE In the Event Logs, we have one Error, that looks like this: Application pool 'AppPool1' is being automatically disabled due to a series of failures in the process(es) serving that application pool. And we have several Warnings leading up to the error, that look like this (note: the warnings look the same, except for the process id): A process serving application pool 'AppPool1' suffered a fatal communication error with the World Wide Web Publishing Service. The process id was '292'. The data field contains the error number. What's causing this? As I said, it doeasn't happen very often....the last time was about 6 months ago...and it usually happens with the same site/App pool. Any ideas? cheers!

• Microsoft Cloud Day - the ups and downs

  The term ‘cloud’ can sometimes obscure the obvious.  Today’s Microsoft Cloud Day conference in London provided a good example.  Scott Guthrie was halfway through what was an excellent keynote when he lost network connectivity.  This proved very disruptive to his presentation which centred on a series of demonstrations of the Azure platform in action.  Great efforts were made to find a solution, but no quick fix presented itself.  The venue’s IT facilities were dreadful – no WiFi, poor 3G reception (forget 4G…this is the UK) and, unbelievably, no-one on hand from the venue staff to help with infrastructure issues.  Eventually, after an unscheduled break, a solution was found and Scott managed to complete his demonstrations.  Further connectivity issues occurred during the day. I can say that the cause was prosaic.  A member of the venue staff had interfered with a patch board and inadvertently disconnected Scott Guthrie’s machine from the network by pulling out a cable. I need to state the obvious here.  If your PC is disconnected from the network it can’t communicate with other systems.  This could include a machine under someone’s desk, a mail server located down the hall, a server in the local data centre, an Internet search engine or even, heaven forbid, a role running on Azure. Inadvertently disconnecting a PC from the network does not imply a fundamental problem with the cloud or any specific cloud platform.  Some of the tweeted comments I’ve seen today are analogous to suggesting that, if you accidently unplug your microwave from the mains, this suggests some fundamental flaw with the electricity supply to your house.   This is poor reasoning, to say the least. As far as the conference was concerned, the connectivity issue in the keynote, coupled with some later problems in a couple of presentations, served to exaggerate the perception of poor organisation.   Software problems encountered before the conference prevented the correct set-up of a smartphone app intended to convey agenda information to attendees.  Although some information was available via this app, the organisers decided to print out an agenda at the last moment.  Unfortunately, the agenda sheet did not convey enough information, and attendees were forced to approach conference staff through the day to clarify locations of the various presentations. Despite these problems, the overwhelming feedback from conference attendees was very positive.  There was a real sense of excitement in the morning keynote.  For many, this was their first sight of new Azure features delivered in the ‘spring’ release.  The most common reaction I heard was amazement and appreciation that Azure’s new IaaS features deliver built-in template support for several flavours of Linux from day one.  This coupled with open source SDKs and several presentations on Azure’s support for Java, node.js, PHP, MongoDB and Hadoop served to communicate that the Azure platform is maturing quickly.  The new virtual network capabilities also surprised many attendees, and the much improved portal experience went down very well. So, despite some very irritating and disruptive problems, the event served its purpose well, communicating the breadth and depth of the newly upgraded Azure platform.  I enjoyed the day very much.

• Architecture design with MyBatis mappers

  I am creating rest web service for providing data. I am using Spring MVC for handling rest requests, and MyBatis for data access. Application should be designed in the way that it should be easy to change the data access implementation (for example to hibernate or something else) and it has to be fast (so I am trying to avoid unnecessary overcomplication of design). Now my question is about the general design of layers. I would normally use DAO interface and then different implementations for different data access strategies, but MyBatis uses interfaces to access the data. So I can think of 2 possible models but I am not sure which one is better or if there is any other nice way: Controller layer - uses Service layer interfaces services are then implemented for each data access stretegy - for example for mybatis: service implementation uses Mapper classes to access data and do whatever it needs to do with them and sends them to controller layer Controller layer - uses Service layer - service layer uses DAO interfaces DAOs are then implemented for each data access strategy - for example for mybatis: DAO class uses mapper interface to access data and sends them to service layer, service layer then do whatever it needs to do with them and sends them to controller layer I prefer the first strategy as it seems to be less complicated, but then I would have to write all of the service code for another data access again.   Hi i have a java application that starts/stops/restart Apache and it should also check for its status, so i have looked how checking for status of apache and it appears that you have to check for the state of the service, problem is that when i use apachectl start the service httpd is still not started, is that normal ? i check for the service state by doing service httpd status . • Flash messages in ASP.NET MVC without sessions

  I'm developing a web application for Windows Azure using ASP.NET MVC 4. I would like to enforce one restriction in the architecture: do not use Session. To achieve availability on Azure, and since there is no sticky sessions, I would need to store the session data in some central service, probably either SQL Azure or the Caching Service. I would rather avoid sessions on the SQL database to avoid the increased latency, and the caching service on Azure is very expensive for the ammount of memory offered. On the other hand, I would like to have the ability to easily pass Flash-style messages among redirects. TempData is the recommended way to do this, but by default it uses the session object. So I would like to know: Is there an alternative way to use TempData that doesn't require sessions or shared data between servers? Cookies perhaps? Is there a better alternative I'm overlooking?

• A Generic RIDC Test Program

  Many times I have found it useful to use a java program that communicates with WebCenter Content (WCC) using RIDC for testing. I might not have access to the web GUI or need to test a service running as a specific user. In the past I had created a number of "one off" programs that submitted specific services, e.g GET_SEARCH_RESULTS, DOCINFO, etc. Recently I decided to create a generic RIDC test program that could submit any service with the desired parameters based on a configuration file. The programs gets the following information from the configuration file: WCC connection information (host, port) User to use to run service Service to run Any parameters for the service The program will make a connection to the WCC server, send the service request, and print the results of the service call using the getResponseAsString() method. Here is a sample configuration file: ridc.host=localhostridc.port=4444ridc.user=sysadminridc.idcservice=GET_SEARCH_RESULTSidcservice.QueryText=dDocType <matches> `Document`idcservice.SortField=dDocNameidcservice.SortDesc=ASC There is a readme file included in the zip with instructions for how to configure and run the program. The program takes one command line argument, the configuration file name. The configuration file name is optional and defaults to config.properties. If you have any suggestions for improvements let me know. Right now it only submits a single service call each time you run it. One enhancement I have already thought about would be to allow you to specify multiple services to tun in the configuration file. You can do that with the current program by having multiple configuration files and running the program multiple times, each with a different configuration file. You can download the program here.

  I've always been a big fan of asynchronous messaging and pub/sub implementations, but coming from a Java background, I'm most familiar with using JMS based messaging systems, such as JBoss MQ, HornetQ, ActiveMQ, OpenMQ, etc. I've also loosely followed the discussion of AMQP. But I recently became aware of the Data Distribution Service Specification from the Object Management Group, and found there are a couple of open-source implementations: OpenSplice OpenDDS It sounds like this stuff is focused on the kind of high-volume scenarios one tends to associate with financial trading exchanges and what-not. My current interest is more along the lines of notifications related to activity stream processing (think Twitter / Facebook) and am wondering if the DDS servers are worth looking into further. Could anyone who has practical experience with this technology, and/or a deep understanding of it, comment on how useful it is, and what scenarios it is best suited for? How does it stack up against more "traditional" JMS servers, and/or AMQP (or even STOMP or OpenWire, etc?) Edit: FWIW, I found some information at this StackOverflow thread. • Software to monitor bill payment to mission critical IT service providers (ISP, DNS etc.)

  Hi All, The Problem: Our very likable but absent minded bookkeeper keeps neglecting to pay our IT vendors on time. Just this past week our internet service was disconnected. Same could happen to many other mission critical accounts (domain registrar, backup MX, anti-virus license, HackerSafe (McAfee secure) service and even an 800 number to name a few). As the sysadmin, i monitor my severs to make sure they are plugged into the power-outlet. I believe i should also monitor my services to make sure they are plugged in to their money-outlet. To compound the problem, when the power goes out someone else will likely notice and notify me. But if a bill is not payed, no one will ever notice until service is lost. Lost as in losing our domain name which would cause a lot more damage then the power failing on our server. [Solution] = [Doesn't work because]: Retrain the bookkeeper = Wishful thinking. Notify my manager = Already have (via email). Protects me, does not solve problem. Fire bookkeeper = What makes you so sure the next one will never forget? Bottom line: Humans are humans and sooner or later something critical will be royally messed up. We need to partner with a machine to help us out here. Anybody have the same problem? What software/solution do you use? I would like software that emails me when a bill is passed due just like i get an email when the power outlet fails. Anyone hear of anything like that? Thanks
