• How do I apply a computer science degree to web development?

  I'm a web programmer, but I haven't found many opportunities to take advantage of a formal education in computer science. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places, but it seems to me like most of the web jobs I come across are CRUD, web forms, and data grids. For these jobs a formal CS background doesn't seem necessary, and you could do fine with O'Reilly cookbooks in jQuery, CSS 3, PHP, SQL, or ASP.NET MVC. What kinds of web developer jobs exist that really let you apply your computer science background? Do I need to branch out into other areas of programming to take full advantage of my degree?

• How can I search a Drupal site with the new Unity lens?

  I'm creating a simple Unity lense for my college site which is based on Drupal, but I don't know how to adapt this command for Drupal API. Please help, it's python. We now create our query url, using the Wikipedia opensearch API url = ("%s/w/api.php?action=opensearch&limit=25&format=json&search=%s" % (self.wiki, search)) I'm using template to write lense following Wikipedia example http://developer.ubuntu.com/2012/04/how-to-create-a-wikipedia-unity-lens-for-ubuntu/. I don't know python but Im familiar with C. This Drupal API calling is the only problem I have to successfully develop a lense. Please help!

Students will turn their spare time focus to finals and getting home for the summer. Over this short course of time, we’ve had a bit over 50 students show some level of interest in developing apps for Windows Phone. I would really like to start writing apps using MVC, but they fear any type of change. How is the best way to convince/ease them into using MVC? I guess this can go for moving to any new technology. Update Decided to go the rogue developer route and just started using it. I recreated a small app in MVC and learned the ropes that way, and moved up from there.

• Is it best to try to work at a company where your software directly makes the company money?

  I was told once that the best place to work as a developer is a company where the software you write is what makes the company money, whether it be software production or software services like consulting. This is opposed to a company where the software you write is just to support some other part of the business that makes the money, like manufacturing or finance. I know there are always exceptions, but in general, are employees treated better if they are on the front lines of profit generation, as opposed to being just another cost center? cost center (n.) - A cost center is part of an organization that does not produce direct profit and adds to the cost of running a company. Examples of cost centers include research and development departments, marketing departments, help desks and customer service/contact centers.

• What's typical in terms of royalties? [closed]

  I'm a developer negotiating compensation for a commercialized version of some data analysis software I wrote (see my profile if you like). This is a completely new experience for me. I want per-unit royalties, but I don't have the slightest idea what the standard amount is. I also want to be compensated for my time, so that's an upfront R&D cost for the company I'm negotiating with, but distribution cost to them is presumably virtually nothing once it's out there. But then there's support costs. What sorts of deals have you folks negotiated?

• Which VCS is more applicable for our workflow?

  Currently we have code stored on a shared network drive and do not use any kind of VCS. The code stored on our shared network drive is always being backed up. We would like to keep things as close to they are now as possible, while using some kind of VCS software. I am envisioning a centralized workflow with each developer having a local copy of the code on his/her machine. We don't do any branching or working offline. Typically when we spin off a new version we would just copy the current working directory to a new directory. I believe we would continue doing this and just create a repository for the new version. I would rather not get into an argument over which VCS is better, just hoping to get some opinions for which is best suited and most applicable for what we are trying to do.

  I am a java/ruby developer from the last 3yrs, trying my hands on JS now. I am fascinated by the awesome UI designs these days. Any app I make, the worst aspect is the UI and I suck at it. I end up copying a design and with a crappy one. I am a student in San Jose, CA, and will be working from next month on Java most probably. My questions are: Are there any good courses (in the the colleges in silicon valley) on web Design (Photoshop), html, css, JS? Is it worth it?

• How do i stop or turn off the x-server?

  im trying to do this tutorial: http://wiki.accelereyes.com/wiki/index.php/Installing_CUDA_Under_Ubuntu_10.04 I need the command that would completely stop/turn off the x-server. when i try to install the nvidia developer driver, i get a blue screen telling my Error:cant install with x-server running, please turn it off (something like that). "sudo service gdm stop" worked at the time i guess, (didnt give any errors) but the x-server is still running. is this the command i should be using? thanks for anyhelp!

• Iterating selected rows in an ADF Faces table

In this entry I showed code to access the row associated with a selected table row from the binding layer to avoid the problem of having to programmatically change the selected table row. As it turns out, my solution only worked fro selected table rows that are in the current iterator query range.   This book is more than just  a book about an ASP.NET CMS system -  it has much practical advice and examples for the Dot Net web developer. I liked the use of JQuery to detect that JavaScript was not enabled. One chapter was about MemCached - this one chapter could justify the price of the book if you run a server farm and need to improve performance. Some links to get you started are: Windows Memcache at http://code.jellycan.com/memcached/ Dot Net Access Library at http://sourceforge.net/projects/memcacheddotnet/ The chapters on scripting, performance analysis and search engne optimisation all provide excellent examples.   Some HTPC media manager applications require movie files to be in stored in separate folders to properly store information such as cover art images and other metadata. Here we look at copying movie files to individual folders. If you already have a large movie collection stored in a single folder, we’ll show you how to quickly move those files into their own individually named folders. File2Folder FIle2folder is a handy portable app that automatically creates and moves movie files into a folder of the same filename. There is no installation needed. Simply download and run the .exe file (link below). Enter the current movie directory, or browse for the folder. File2folder now supports both local and network shares. When you are ready to create the folders and move the files, click Move! You’ll see the move progress displayed in the window. When the process is finished, you’ll have all your movie file in individual folders.   Change your mind? Just click the Undo! button…   …and the move and folder creation process will be undone. If you would like to have the folder monitored for new files, click the Start button. File2folder will process any new files it discovers every 180 seconds. To turn it off, click Stop. • Java to PHP job change [closed]

  I've been working with java my entire career(8 years), web servers mostly. And there is a possibility for me to start working in environment that is generally PHP based. I've never worked with PHP before except that I wrote a simple send mail html form once or twice. Is there any benefit in learning a PHP stack or this will be a complete waste of time and degradation as a developer? No offense, but I've heard terrible things about that language and I'm afraid that if people see it in my resume later that would scare them off.

• How to avoid being forked into oblivion by a more powerful contributor?

  As recently reported here: Xamarin has forked Cocos2D-XNA, a 2D/3D game development framework, creating a cross-platform library that can be included in PCL projects. However the founder of the project that was forked says: The purpose of the MIT license is to unencumber your fair use. Not to encourage you to take software, rebrand it as your own, and then "take it in a new direction" as you say. While not illegal, it is unethical. It seems that the GitHub page of the new project doesn't even indicate that it's a fork in a typical GitHub manner, opting for an easily-removable History section instead (see bottom). So my questions are: Was Xamarin's action and the way the action was done ethical or not? Is it possible to avoid such a situation if you are a single developer or a small unfunded group of developers? I am hoping this could be either a wiki question or there will be some objective answers grounded on modern OSS ethics/philosophy.

• Do you think code is self documenting?

  This is a question that was put to me many years ago as a gradute in a job interview and it's nagged at my brain now and again and I've never really found a good answer that satisfied me. The interviewer in question was looking for a black and white answer, there was no middle ground. I never got the chance to ask about the rationale behind the question, but I'm curious why that question would be put to a developer and what you would learn from a yes or no answer? From my own point of view, I can read Java, Python, Delphi etc, but if my manager comes up to me and asks me how far along in a project I am and I say "The code is 80% complete" (and before you start shooting me down, I've heard this uttered in a couple of offices by developers), how exactly is that self documenting? Apologies if this question seems strange, but I'd rather ask and get some opinions on it to gain a better understanding of why it would be put to someone in an interview.

• How can I clone or mirror a site without SEO penalties for duplicate content?

  I am a web developer and I want to create clones of the sites I've developed for clients, so that I have an "original copy" on a subdomain of my own website, so that I can showcase my work to new clients. What is the best way to not get my clients original websites penalised for duplicate content? I am planning to have a robots.txt file that disallows all robots, as well as using <link href="http://www.client-canonical-site.com/" rel="canonical" /> in the <head> of the pages. Is that sufficient? Should I use rel=nofollow on all the links as well?

• My Last Day at Microsoft

• Application won't run when installed in "/opt"

  I've developed a program for the App Developer Showdown, with quickly, in python, and it works as expected when I package and install it normally -in /usr. However when packaged for installation in /opt it doesn't run -and I'm not getting (or can't find) an error message of any sort, as to what the problem might be. I was wondering if someone here has the answer. The app does require root access -using gksudo- to function. I'm fairly new to programming, but not to Linux. • Peer code review for full application

I was wondering if there are any websites or resources for a full site peer code review. I'm new to Ruby specifically and want to make sure that my logic is following the overall best standards. I've pieced together multiple different tutorials and I feel like while my understanding is getting better, it'd be great if the overall structure of such an application could be critiqued, and for someone that doesn't really know another Ruby developer - I find that I've run into a roadblock and don't want to develop bad habits now.

• TortoiseSVN and Subclipse icons not updating with SVN? [migrated]

  I have a repository on a network share with working directories on two separate machines. Upon making changes to my local working directory and committing them, the icons are not changing on the other developer's machine. If the Dev goes to Team Synchronize with Repository it shows the changes in the Synchronize view within Eclipse, however I was expecting the icon next to the project to change if it is not in sync with the repository. The same happens with TortoiseSVN in Windows Explorer. If we right click and check the repository for modifications it shows them, however the overlay icon on the directory is still the green check box. Am I just misinterpreting what I expect to happen, or is there a way to get these icons to change if the project is no longer in sync with the repository?

• Fastest way to set up a JSON server on my local machine [closed]

  I am a front-end developer. For many experiements I do I need to have a server that talks JSON with my client side app. Normally that server is a simple server that response to my POSTs and GETs. For example I need to setup a server that saves, modifies and read data from a "library" database like this: POST /books create a book GET /book/:id gets a book and so on... What is the fastest to set up and easiest technology stack for database and server in this case? I am open to use Ruby, Nodejs and anything that do the job fast and easy.
