• Highly scalable and dynamic "rule-based" applications?

  For a large enterprise app, everyone knows that being able to adjust to change is one of the most important aspects of design. I use a rule-based approach a lot of the time to deal with changing business logic, with each rule being stored in a DB. This allows for easy changes to be made without diving into nasty details. Now since C# cannot Eval("foo(bar);") this is accomplished by using formatted strings stored in rows that are then processed in JavaScript at runtime. This works fine, however, it is less than elegant, and would not be the most enjoyable for anyone else to pick up on once it becomes legacy. Is there a more elegant solution to this? When you get into thousands of rules that change fairly frequently it becomes a real bear, but this cannot be that uncommon of a problem that someone has not thought of a better way to do this. Any suggestions? Is this current method defensible? What are the alternatives? Edit: Just to clarify, this is a large enterprise app, so no matter which solution works, there will be plenty of people constantly maintaining its rules and data (around 10). Also, The data changes frequently enough to say that some sort of centralized server system is basically a must.

• Formatting minified jQuery, JavaScript using the Internet Explorer 9 Developer Toolbar

  Much has been talked about the F12 developer toolbar in IE and the support it provides for web developers.  Starting IE8, the Developer Toolbar is a menu item that helps you view the page source, scripts, profiling and many other details of the rendered page.  It even allows script debugging from within and that makes it a truly powerful web developer tool bar. With IE9, the developer toolbar got even better with the Networking Tab that allows you to inspect the traffic/time taken and drill down into the Request/Response headers and other specifics. The script tab allows you to view the scripts used in the page. One of the challenges of working with JavaScript / jQuery when they are minified, is that, it becomes really hard to read.  Minified JavaScript is a compression technique and also a best practice for delivering faster web pages.  However, when you would like to debug, minified JavaScript files become very hard since they aren't properly formatted.  Take the case of the above sample, which is a basic MVC 3 Web Application.  It uses the minified jQuery and modernizr files.   If you use Sleep Mode on your PC, have you ever noticed that moving your mouse will wake the computer from sleep mode? If you would prefer to only have the PC wake up when you hit a key instead, there’s a simple tweak. Just type Mouse into the start menu search box, or the Control Panel search box, and then open up the Mouse Properties panel. Find the Hardware tab, select your mouse in the list, and then click the Properties button. You’ll have to click the “Change settings” button before you can see the Power Management tab… And now, you can uncheck the box from “Allow this device to wake the computer”. • How do I get same scrollbar style for gtk-2.0 and gtk-3.0 apps?

  Sorry for my English mistakes, I'm Spanish. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 in a tablet. I've removed overlay-scrollbars and I have increased the scrollbars size to use them with fingers. In /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/gtkrc I've changed: GtkScrollbar::slider-width = 23 GtkScrollbar::min-slider-length = 51 and added: GtkScrollbar::has-backward-stepper = 0 GtkScrollbar::has-forward-stepper = 0 In /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-3.0/gtk-widgets.css I've changed: GtkScrollbar-min-slider-length: 51; GtkRange-slider-width: 23; (in .scrollbar item) Now my scrollbars are usable with fingers, but they seem different for gtk-2.0 and gtk-3.0 apps. • Apache redirecting: reason unknown

  I have a simple php script. The script is not important. It just prints out $_SERVER. When I request an URL like www.server.com/?ref=bar everything is fine. However if the request contains something like www.server.com/?ref=http://www.test.com (?ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.test.com) the server redirects to 403.shtml. No redirect for http://x but redirects http://x.y As far as I can understand somehow the server doesn't like "http://x". It always redirects to 403.shtml when there is a valid query string in the form of a valid url. my .htacess file is the same both on my server and local test server and local test server behaves as expected (no redirects). So I don't it is related to .htaccess. I'm on shared host on Hostgator. Can anyone help? Edit: Here's the .htaccess file Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?$1 [L,QSA] When there is an http://xx.x it redirects to 403 even if there is physical file. • Installing 10.10+ with Radeon HD 6970 Video Card

  I built a new PC that has a Diamond Radeon HD 6970 graphics card, and no on-board graphics. When I boot from the Ubuntu disc, it runs through some initial booting stuff, and then gets to a loading screen that just has the Ubuntu logo and some progress bar/dot thingies. After this screen is finished, it goes black and says it cannot display video mode. I've seen many people that say to simply install the ati drivers. However, I don't believe this is an option, because I can't even get to the boot screen that asks me if I want to run the system off of the LiveCD, boot to hard disk, etc... Is there a way to somehow boot to a CLI before getting to the screen that would normally let me choose that? I'm at a loss as far as what to do. Also: Yes, the CD boots fine on other machines. (I've also burnt a couple discs just to be sure) Yes, the graphics card is fine. I normally dual-boot with Windows 7, and it runs on Windows just fine. Thanks for any help!

• IASA ITARC &ndash; Denver May 6th

  The Denver chapter of the International Association of Software Architects (IASA) is holding an IT Architect Regional Conference (ITARC) in Denver on May 6th. The speaker list for this conference is amazing. Paul Rayner, Dave McComb, Randy Kahle, Peter Provost, Randy Stafford, George Fairbanks – all great speakers, and from Colorado. Brandon Satrom (who also happens to be the president of the IASA Austin chapter) will also be speaking, as will some other heavy hitters (for example, Ted Farrell, Chief Architect and Senior VP of Oracle). This is an amazing line-up, and the conference is quite reasonably priced ($150 for IASA members until April 10th, including a catered lunch). I also have the privilege of being a presenter at this conference. If you’ve ever heard any of the previously named speakers, you know that they set the bar quite high. Sounds like I’m going to have to step up my game. What I get to talk about is really cool stuff. The company I work for – Colorado CustomWare – brought me on board nearly two years ago. To say there was some technical debt is somewhat… understated. Equally understated would be that management is committed to doing the right thing. Over the past two years, we’ve done significant architectural refactoring – including an effort that took the entire team offline for most of a month. We’ve reduced the application size by 50% without losing functionality. As you can imagine, this has reduced the complexity of the application, making development faster and less prone to bugs. We’ve made many other changes – moving to an agile process, training developers, moving towards a more OO architecture. The changes we’ve made reveal, in some ways, just how far afield we were.. and there are still more changes to be made. Amazingly enough, our leadership team is eager for me to share these experiences with other architects. I’m really looking forward to being able to do so.

• Penalty for collision during a racing game

  In a racing game: How should we penalize the player for colliding head on into obstacles such as walls, trees and so on. What is the way it is done in your favorite racing game? How is it done in other successful racing games? Do you think temporarily disabling the engine for a second is too severe? If I do go that route, how would I convey the 'engine is disabled' to the player in a subtle and easily understood way? Is this 'too much' of a penalty? Would the slow-down from the collision be sufficient to discourage the player from driving too carelessly? Which one is more fun? Should I consider a health-bar and affect engine performance for 'low health' status? Could you offer examples of games that handle this well and one that do it poorly? Please share your experience with racing games obstacles and reference games you feel perform well in this aspect. I am sure we all enjoy our racing games differently and I would like to hear different opinions regarding this issue. I would also like to hear how you feel we should penalize or reward for colliding with other vehicles? Should enemy vehicles be destroyable? Should they slow down severely when they hit the back of your car or would that make the gameplay imbalanced?

• Getting a double slash when redirecting for a canonical hostname on Firefox only

  I have a Django powered website, and I'm trying to solve the "canonical hostname" problem. I want www.example.com to redirect to example.com. I have tried both techniques found in the Apache documentation here (scroll down to Canonical hostnames). I'm currently trying the mod_rewrite method, and I have this in a virtual host container: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.example\.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^/?(.*)$ http://example.com/$1 [L,R=301,NE] This works for me, except for one case. In Firefox only, if I type www.example.com in a browser, it redirects and I see this in the URL bar: example.com// (note the 2 trailing slashes). However, something like this will work correctly: www.example.com/news/ gets redirected to example.com/news/. I only see this on the root URL in Firefox. It seems to work fine on Windows under Chrome, IE9, and Opera (maybe those browsers eat the double slash?). My Mac using friend says it is fine in Safari, but he also sees the problem in Firefox. As far as Django settings go, I am using the default value of APPEND_SLASH=True. I don't know if Django has anything to do with it, but I've tried mod_rewrite rules like the above on static HTML sites before and it always seems to work.

• How do I get media players to play ripped dvd files using Handbrake?

  I want to rip my dvd collection to put on a server for my tv. I started this with trying 4 dvds using Handbrake. The first 3 ripped perfectly fine according to the directions I used from LifeHacker (http://lifehacker.com/5773000/how-to-rip-dvds-with-handbrake). The 4th dvd took about 2 secs to rip and then stopped saying it was complete. It was not. Now with the 3 files I have I tried to open and play with VLC and Miro. Neither one would play the file. It says its open but there is no sound or video and it doesn't actually show the movie playing in the progress bar. I ran it from the terminal and this is the error message I get. • Copying files to Truecrypt file container hangs

  I have a dual boot installation with Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bits, NTFS file sytem) and Ubuntu 10.10 (32-bits, ext4 file system). I have installed the version 7.0a of Truecrypt in both Operating Systems. Located in the Windows 7 HDD I have a 150 GB encrypted file container. It is a standard and dynamic file container, which means it's not hidden and uses a sparse file. This file was created using the Windows version of the Truecrypt program. When I logon in Windows the container is mounted as the drive E: and everything works fine! In Ubuntu the Windows's NTFS file system is automaticaly mounted after I logon. I've configured that using the ntfs-config package. In my ~/.profile I have this line to mount the truecrypt's file container: truecrypt /media/7EDEBCFADEBCABB1/Users/Wagner/hd/hd.tc /media/truecrypt1 The file container is mounted after the logon without any problem. I can access it, copy files to/from it, etc. But when I try do copy relatively large amounts of data (~50 MB) to it via nautilus or cp -R, it starts the copy, copies some data until certain point and then it just hangs! The progress bar does not move anymore and nothing happens. There is no error, it just hangs and that's it. I have to kill the process myself. This problem does not happen in Windows: I can copy very large amounts of data to the container and it works great. But in Ubuntu the problem always happens! I mean, whenever I try to copy a bunch of files together the copy process hangs. Does anyone ever faced this problem? Can anyone help? Thanks!

  One of the most common questions I receive is if there any tool available to generate load on SQL Server. Absolutely there is a fabulous free tool available to generate load on SQL Server on Codeplex. This tool was released in 2008 but it is still extremely relevant to generate the load on SQL Server as well works fabulously. CodePlex is a project initiated by Microsoft for hosting open source softwares. The best part of this SQL Server Load Generator is that users can run multiple simultaneous queries again SQL Server using different login account and different application name. The interface of the tool is extremely easy to use and very intuitive as well. One of the things which I felt needed improvement was a default configuration. As every single time when I was adding a query the default settings were showing up and I had to manually change that. However, when I went to Menu >> Tools >>Options I was really happy as it has options to change every single default which is available. Here one can give default username, password, database name as well various settings related to configuration. Additionally application logging is also possible through the options. A couple of other important points I noticed was the button to reset counters as well status bar containing useful information of Total Threads, Completed Queries and Failed Queries.   In the last post, I have showed you how to create a simple site definition. In this post, I will continue with adding more features and customization to the site definition. Create a Top Nav bar for the home page. You need to modify the Onet.xml file by adding NavBar Child into NavBars element. (1002 is the magic number for top nav) and then adding NavBarPage under the File element as highlighted below in the picture. Next, I will include all the site and web features for all the list template and other features that are available in team site. Open OOB team site template by going to 14àTemplate àSiteTemplatesàstsàxmlàONET.XML Copy the web features and site features from the file we just opened to your site definition ONET.XML file. Finally I will include all the document template , copy document templates element from the file we just opened to your own ONET.XML Redeploy your solution and you will see all the document template and list template in your custom site.(Remember to delete all the sites using previous version of the custom definition before deploying and recreation the site.) • Kubuntu 11.04 bad experience, Gimp crashes and other bugs

  I installed Kubuntu 11.04 64bit today. First let me expose some issues, this is not a rant, just some observations on Kubuntu 11.04 :) Flash doesn't work. The package "flashplugin-installer" was installed by rekonq. But still no flash. Additional Drivers (jockey-kde) doesn't show up automatically after first login. I tried to delete a large file (19,2 GB), an error appeared: "Please empty the trash first, no more space available" or something like that, but you know what? My trash was empty! (Then I found in Dolphin the settings to increment the max size of the trash). Amarok has no play/pause/forward/back buttons, only after changing settings to show those buttons on the top bar. GTK applications like ubuntu software center, inkscape... are in english, but my default language is "german". Only gimp allows to install the "de" language pack. The numblock turns off after each restart. In the KDE Control Center, the "remember last state" of numblock is set. But this is not working. I had some crashes: Nepomuk, Policy-kit, plasma-workspace and gimp. But now to the important stuff. I really need Gimp to work. After starting it, I get a crash: giowck@giowck-desktop:~$ gimp (gimp:1899): GLib-WARNING **: /build/buildd/glib2.0-2.28.6/./glib/goption.c:2132: ignoring no-arg, optional-arg or filename flags (8) on option of type 0 Speicherzugriffsfehler (in English: "Memory error") What can I do to run Gimp? • Restore audio settings - cannot open mixer: No such file or directory

  The internal speaker of my laptop never functionned under Ubuntu. I tried to follow indication on the web and now the jack audio does not work either. The graphic interface for audio management now displays a 'dummy output' instead of the three possible outputs I used to have (one of them was working for the jack output). In a terminal alsamixer raises an error: cannot open mixer: No such file or directory I did try to remove and reinstall alsa-utils but it did not change anything. This happened after a failed atempt to install alsa-driver-linuxant_1.0.23.1_all.deb from here. My sound card seems to be not recognised anymore. After reboot I have no more the sound icon in menu bar the upper right corner. I think I have removed my sound card driver. Indeed, the command sudo lshw -class multimedia indicated audi device as unclaimed. Any idea how I could revert to a better situation (that is jack support and alsa working)? • Getting rid of Massive View Controller in iOS?

  I had a discussion with my colleague about the following problem. We have an application where we need filtering functionality. On any main screen within the upper navigation bar, there is a button in the upper right corner. Once you touch that button, an custom written Alert View like view will pop up modally, behind it a semitransparent black overlay view. In that modal view, there is a table view of options, and you can choose one exclusively. Based on your selection, once this modal view is closed, the list of items in the main view is filtered. It is simply a modally presented filter to filter the main table view.This UI design is dictated by the design department, I cannot do anything about it so let accept this as a premise. Also the main filter button in the navbar will change colours to indicate that the filter is active. The question I have is about implementation. I suggested to my colleague that we create a separate XYZFilter class that will be an instance created by the main view controller acquire the filtering options handle saving and restoration of its state - i.e. last filter selected provide its two views - the overlay view and the modal view be the datasource for the table in its modal view. For some unknown reason, my colleague was not impressed by that approach at all. He simply wants to do these functionalities in the main view controller, maybe out of being used to do this in the past like that :-/ Is there any fundamental problem with my approach? I want to keep the view controller small, not to have spaghetti code create a reusable component (for use outside the project) have more object oriented, decoupled approach. prevent duplication of code as we need the filtering in two different places but it looks the same in both.. Any advice?

• Can't change folder background

  I tried to change via dragging from the Backgrounds and Emblems window, but the icon just goes back to that window rather than changing the folder background.However, I can change the task bar by this drag-n-drop. Probably it is something about changing ownership permission? if so how to change that? • Keyboard freezes / stuck if a key pressed repeatedly

  I use Acer 4530. This problem has happened long since Ubuntu 10.10 and now that I use 11.04 dual booted with Linux Mint 10. Everytime I press one key repeatedly, like when I read a long article in a website/ebook or when I play games which required me to press arrow keys repeatedly, it would randomly freeze. That is, whatever I press on keyboard has no effect, and that also happens with touchpad. However, the USB mouse works just fine. I later found out that it's not actually freeze but more like it's like the key stuck. For example when I play tetris which I usually press w (down) button repeatedly, after some times it would freeze. And if I put the cursor in, say, browser's address bar, it would type "wwww....." infinitely. The only way I could fix it is by suspend the laptop, either by using mouse or by closing the lid. And instead of suspended, in that case the laptop would automatically wake up and everything will be fine. (Usually my laptop would wake up after suspended by pressing any key) It has happened since the first time I use Ubuntu, 10.10, and it also happens in Linux Mint 10, and until now in Ubuntu 11.04. It never happened when I use Windows, though. Anyone has ever encounter similar problem? Anyone know how to fix it permanently?
