Ideas for networking project

Hi all, I'm a graduating senior in computer science taking a computer networks class and I'm trying to figure out my final project. I normally am not at a loss for ideas but be it senioritis or straight burn out, I've got nothing. I've done some fun stuff in the past, but I just can't seem to come up with a good idea. Given the mass of brilliance on this site, I figured it would be a good place to request some suggestions. To give you an idea of scope, it's due in about a month and I would consider myself proficient with mobile architectures like Android (although I have no iPhone experience) along with Java, C++, etc. If you can suggest an idea, I'd be happy to make it work in whatever language I know. Like I said, I'm a senior and will be graduating so I'd rather not take on something that would kill me... Also, I'd be happy to make it open source if it's an idea you'd always wanted to work on but didn't have the time to start. Thanks in advance for the help! Unfortunately I've actually already written a chat client (for a network security class) and I think I'd run into some honor code issues if I did that again, although that's always a great option. I like the game idea and that's actually something I've never attempted before (in any capacity) although given that, I'm a little scared about time...

FindByIdentity in System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagment Memory Issues

I'm working on an active directory managament application. In addition to the typical Create A New User, Enable/Disable an account, reset my password etc. it also managages application permissions for all of the clients web applications. Application management is handled by thousands of AD groups such as which are built from 3 letter codes for the application, section and site, there are also hundreds of AD groups which determine which applications and locations a coordinator can grant rights to. All of these groups in turn belong to other groups so I typically filter the groups list with the MemberOf property to find the groups that a user directly belongs to (or everyone has rights to do everything). I've made extensive use of the System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagment namespace using the FindByIdentity method in 31 places throughout the application. This method calls a private method FindPrincipalByIdentRefHelper on the internal ADStoreCtx class. A SearchResultCollection is created but not disposed so eventually typically once or twice a day the web server runs out of memory and all of the applications on the web server stop responsing until iis is reset because the resources used by the com objects aren't ever relased. There are places where I fall back to the underlying directory objects, but there are lot of places where I'm using the properties on the Principal - it's a vast improvement over using the esoteric ad property names in the .Net 2.0 Directory services code. I've contacted microsoft about the problem and it's been fixed in .Net 4.0 but they don't currently have plans to fix it in 3.5 unless there is intrest in the community about it. I only found information about it in a couple of places the MDSN documentation in the community content state's there is a memory leak at the bottom (guess I should have read that before using the the method) http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb345628.aspx And the class in question is internal and doesn't expose SearchResultsCollection outside the offending method so I can't get at the results to dispose them or inherit from the class and override the method. So my questions are Has anyone else encountered this problem? If so were you able to work around it? Do I have any option besides rewriting the application not using any of the .Net 3.5 active directory code? Thanks

ThreadAbortException (WebClient using DownloadFile to grab file from server)

Usually this was just a file not found exception. I have no idea what or why that new exception is throwing? 2) Now that a different exception is throwing on the server side instead of the file not found, it would seem I can't use this set up for the application, because back on client side, any exception is assumed to be filenotfound. Any help, especially info on why this ThreadAbortException is throwing!?!? greatly appreciated. Cheers

how to display a JFrame from an applet?

When the button is clicked, I want the PollFrame to be displayed. Using UpdatePanels inside of a ListView

Hey everyone, I'm wondering if anybody has run across something similar to this before. Some quick pseudo-code to get started: <UpdatePanel> <ContentTemplate> <ListView> <LayoutTemplate> <UpdatePanel> <ContentTemplate> <ItemPlaceholder /> </ContentTemplate> </UpdatePanel> </LayoutTemplate> <ItemTemplate> Some stuff goes here </ItemTemplate> </ListView> </ContentTemplate> </UpdatePanel> The main thing to take away from the above is that I have an update panel which contains a listview; and then each of the listview items is contained in its own update panel. What I'm trying to do is when one of the ListView update panels triggers a postback, I'd want to also update one of the other ListView item update panels. A practical implementation would be a quick survey, that has 3 questions. We'd only ask Question #3 if the user answered "Yes" to Question #1. When the page loads; it hides Q3 because it doesn't see "Yes" for Q1. When the user clicks "Yes" to Q1, I want to refresh the Q3 update panel so it now displays. I've got it working now by refreshing the outer UpdatePanel on postback, but this seems inefficient because I don't need to re-evaluate every item; just the ones that would be affected by the prerequisite i detailed out above. I've been grappling with setting up triggers, but i keep coming up empty mainly because I can't figure out a way to set up a trigger for the updatepanel for Q3 based off of the postback triggered by Q1. Any suggestions out there? Am I barking up the wrong tree?

hi everyone Is it possible to save text of textarea (flash 10, as3, cs5) in some variable or so and with its textformat (more than one color) and then reuse it to replace text in textarea? I tried saving htmlText of textarea but the problem is when i replace it in textarea tags causes problem. There will always be another extra line. If anyone wants to view p tags problem try following. Silverlight 3 - Data Binding Position of a rectangle on a canvas

From what i have learned here it would appear this is due to the items being placed inside a content presenter not the actual canvas i have specified in the items panel. Is there a way i can use data binding to determine the position of elements on a canvas?

WiX: Installing Service as LocalService

Hey there, I am trying to get my application an installer via WiX 3.0. The exact code is: <File Id="ServiceComponentMain" Name="$(var.myProgramService.TargetFileName)" Source="$(var.myProgramService.TargetPath)" DiskId="1" Vital="yes"/>  <ServiceInstall Id="MyProgramServiceInstaller" Type="ownProcess" Vital="yes" Name="MyProgramAddon" DisplayName="[removed]" Description="[removed]" Start="auto" Account="LocalService" ErrorControl="ignore" Interactive="no"/> <ServiceControl Id="StartDDService" Name="MyProgramServiceInstaller" Start="install" Wait="no" /> <ServiceControl Id="StopDDService" Name="MyProgramServiceInstaller" Stop="both" Wait="yes" Remove="uninstall" /> Thing is, for some reason LocalService fails on the "Installing services" step, and if I change it to "LocalSystem" then the installer times out while trying to start the service. The service starts fine manually and at system startup, and for all intents and purposes works great. I've heard there are issues getting services to work right under LocalService, but Google isnt really helping as everyone's responses have been "got it to work kthx". Just looking to get this service set up and started during installation, that's all. Any help? Thanks!

Based on some logic however, I would like to set either a line or a item in one of the columns, e.g. a fruit to red, or the line to bold. I have code to work out which Fruit or Color I would like to differentiate (by color/bold) in the code behind, but I can't figure out, especially given the custom listbox display, how I could go about setting a particular item to a different color/bold. Python + QT + Gstreamer

I've found tutorials for C and Qt, and for python and gtk, but NOTHING for this combo of pyQt and gstreamer. Anybody get this working? Universal Authentication to Google Data API?

Hey, I want to be able to have say 10 admin users store all their documents on google docs for a domain ('http://docs.google.com/a/domain.com'), and have everyone else be able to view them through 'domain.com/documents'. I'm just not certain how the whole authentication thing works in that case. Should I use OAuth? Or could I just use ClientLogin for say the root/global admin, and anytime someone goes to the site, they login as that? That works for personal docs, but it doesn't seem to be working for Google Apps. I would like it so the user has no idea they're accessing google docs, so I don't want them to have to say "Yes, Authenticate this App with Google", as seen in this Doclist Manager App. The app is basically: Admin stores a bunch of forms and documents User uses form and views documents the admin has posted ... so there's no need to access the user's Google Docs. But it seems like AuthSub and OAuth are addressing that instead... Thanks for the tips.

jQuery ajax link, returned data includes a from that wont submit

Hi everyone, I have a problem with the returned data from a ajax request. Basically when I click on a link it runs a ajax request to load some html into a div, that part is working fine the problem comes when the data has been loaded. Part of the html loaded is a form, this form works fine if I load the page directly but when it is loaded through ajax into the div it wont submit but the rest of the links in the html work fine. Flash vs. Ajax Abilities

Hey everyone. I want to develop an application that does a bunch of cool stuff. The first thing that I need in it is to get information about the page a person is browsing. With that said, I need for example to know how long a user stayed in a page and where was the scrollbar. While getting that data, It's all saved to a database. The thing is, I prefer doing that in Flash [although I have no experience in it] over Ajax since I want to hide the code - which as far as I know not possible in Javascript/Ajax. So, can I do all that in Flash? - Read the content of the page, get the status of the scroll bar.. Plus, I then need to go threw the gathered information that is saved in the database. Since there could be many calculations i thought C++ .Net is better than PHP [which I know better]. Is that all possible or am I just crazy? :) Thanks ahead.

Showing/hiding a JPopupMenu from a JButton; FocusListener not working?

Hi everyone, I needed a JButton with an attached dropdown style menu. So I took a JPopupMenu and attached it to the JButton in the way you can see in the code below. What it needs to do is this: show the popup when clicked hide it if clicked a second time hide it if an item is selected in the popup hide it if the user clicks somewhere else in the screen These 4 things work, but because of the boolean flag I'm using, if the user clicks somewhere else or selects an item, I have to click twice on the button before it shows up again. That's why I tried to add a FocusListener (which is absolutely not responding) to fix that and set the flag false in these cases. Problem with date parameter - Oracle

I need to get the intersection of these on 2D (going to be the outline of a peanut, but a bit skewed since the intersection happens at an angle), but don't know how. Thanks

General question about DirectShow.NET, DirectShow and Windows Media Format

I searched and googled for an answer but couldn't find one. Basically I'm developing a webcam/audio streaming application which should capture audio and video from a pc (usb webcam/microphone) and send them to a receiving server. What the server will do with that it's another story and phase two (which I'm skipping for now) I wrote some code using DirectShow and Windows Media Format and it worked great for capture audio/video and sending them to another client, but there's a major problem: latency. Everywhere in the internet everyone gave me the same answer: "sorry dude but media format isn't for video conferencing, their codecs have too high latency". I thought I could skip the .wmv problems but seems like it's not possible to do... this road ends here then. So I saw a few examples with DirectShow.NET which were faster for both audio and video.. my question is: how come that DirectShow.NET is faster and better for video/audio conferencing? Shouldn't it be just a .NET porting of C++'s DirectShow? Am I missing something? I'm a bit confused at this point

Matlab crashes on library initialize when called from Java

Hello everyone. The setup I have is I'm using a Java application to call native C-code with JNI, which in turn starts up the MATLAB runtime and calls functions on it (I know there are other solutions to call MATLAB methods from Java). The problem is that the MATLAB engine crashes at some point during the initialization and I don't know what's causing it exactly. The crash causes my jvm to terminate, I assume it's some kind of memory corruption. jquery autocomplete & masterpage

Hi everyone, first time posting here, so hello to all :-) I'm pretty new to the jQuery thing, but I got the autocomplete function running quite well on a simple aspx page. Now I wanted to use the same function on an aspx-page with a masterpage, and it doesnt work anymore. this test function works fine: $(document).ready(function () { $("[id$=AlertButton]").click(function () { alert("Welcome jQuery !"); }); }); but this simply does nothing: $(document).ready(function () { $("[id$=Suchen]").autocomplete("AutocompleteData.ashx"); }); the javascript and css files are loaded in the master page, just above the contentplaceholder. the code within the contentplaceholder looks like this: <atlas:ScriptManager id="SM1" runat="server" EnablePartialRendering="true" > <Services> <atlas:servicereference path="~/xxxxx.asmx" /> </Services> </atlas:ScriptManager> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $("[id$=Suchen]").autocomplete("AutocompleteData.ashx"); }); </script> <br /> <asp:Button ID="AlertButton" runat="server" Text="Button" /> <br /> <asp:TextBox ID="Suchen" Width="250" runat="server"></asp:TextBox> if I execute the .ashx page on its own, it fires back the expected data... Hello EveryOne!! Hope You all are fine and also in Your best of moods!! I need You Guys help.. I need to Create an Image Gallery!! That may be use Concept of Scrolling and Paging together. When i Click on Button, It will open new view in landscape mode. This View is for my Image Gallery.. It Shows 5 Images 1) - Centered Large Image With its description on Bottom. 2) - Next Coming image on left side, This image is slightly tilled at some angle, Without any description at bottom. 3)next to next coming image on left to 2nd image. 4) - previous image on right side, This image is slightly tilled at some angle, Without any description at bottom. 5)Previous to Previous image on right of 4th image And All images are scrollable.. like When i scroll 2nd image, it Will move to Center and show its description and image Which is already centered move to previous image. ASP.NET MVC - PartialView not refreshing

Hello Everyone, I have a view that uses a javascript callback to reload a partial view. For whatever reason the contents of the partial class do not refresh even though i can step through the entire process and see the page being recalled and populated. Any reason why the page would not display? Python class variables not defined with called from outside module

I am having some issues with calling a function outside of a module. The scenario is I have a small class library that is using turtle to do some drawing, the function within the module calls the classes also within the module and draws things, etc. This all works fine and dandy when I call the function from within the same file, but if I have another file and call myLib.scene() I get variable undefined errors. Code examples: a class class Rectangle(object): def __init__(self, pen, height=100, width=100, fillcolor=''): self.pen = pen self.height = height self.width = width self.fillcolor = fillcolor def draw(self, x, y): '''draws the rectangle at coordinates x and y''' self.pen.goto(x, y) if self.fillcolor: self.pen.fillcolor(self.fillcolor) self.pen.fill(True) self.pen.down() for i in range(0,4): self.pen.forward(self.height if i%2 else self.width) self.pen.left(90) and the calling function is this def scene(pen): rect = Rectangle(pen) rect.draw(100,100) when I put the line scene(turtle.Turtle()) into the same file I have no issues, the rectangle is drawn and everyone goes home happy. However, if I try to call it from a separate python file like so: myLib.scene(turtle.Turtle()) I get an error: NameError: global name 'pen' is not defined, in the for loop of my draw method. Even if the line above is in the same file it still bombs out. What is going on?
