  This is Easter weekend, and the end of the school year is looming closer! Our developer sessions at WashU end today. Students will turn their spare time focus to finals and getting home for the summer. Over this short course of time, we’ve had a bit over 50 students show some level of interest in developing apps for Windows Phone. Currently the total apps submitted by students is approaching about 20. Several students have received new phones as part of their agreement to submit applications.

• How do i stop or turn off the x-server?

  im trying to do this tutorial: http://wiki.accelereyes.com/wiki/index.php/Installing_CUDA_Under_Ubuntu_10.04 I need the command that would completely stop/turn off the x-server. when i try to install the nvidia developer driver, i get a blue screen telling my Error:cant install with x-server running, please turn it off (something like that). "sudo service gdm stop" worked at the time i guess, (didnt give any errors) but the x-server is still running. is this the command i should be using? thanks for anyhelp!

  I'm a developer negotiating compensation for a commercialized version of some data analysis software I wrote (see my profile if you like). This is a completely new experience for me. I want per-unit royalties, but I don't have the slightest idea what the standard amount is. I also want to be compensated for my time, so that's an upfront R&D cost for the company I'm negotiating with, but distribution cost to them is presumably virtually nothing once it's out there. But then there's support costs. What sorts of deals have you folks negotiated?

  This book is more than just  a book about an ASP.NET CMS system -  it has much practical advice and examples for the Dot Net web developer. I liked the use of JQuery to detect that JavaScript was not enabled. One chapter was about MemCached - this one chapter could justify the price of the book if you run a server farm and need to improve performance. • Is it best to try to work at a company where your software directly makes the company money?

  I was told once that the best place to work as a developer is a company where the software you write is what makes the company money, whether it be software production or software services like consulting. This is opposed to a company where the software you write is just to support some other part of the business that makes the money, like manufacturing or finance. I know there are always exceptions, but in general, are employees treated better if they are on the front lines of profit generation, as opposed to being just another cost center? cost center (n.) - A cost center is part of an organization that does not produce direct profit and adds to the cost of running a company. Examples of cost centers include research and development departments, marketing departments, help desks and customer service/contact centers.

• What's the current best practice for C multithreading?

  I've been a Java (and PHP) developer for most of my life, but will need to use C for my next project. I remember some basic stuff we did back in school with fork, pthread, semaphores, etc. but I'm not sure if that's still the "way to go" here, or if there have been any recent developments/improvements etc. Google's results seem to be fairly dated. Or does that just mean that this is still the current "state of the art"? Or will I have to use a (system-independent) libary like glib if I want higher-level abstractions, like synchronized queues? What other libraries are there? (The programm will only have to run on Linux though)

• Application won't run when installed in "/opt"

  I've developed a program for the App Developer Showdown, with quickly, in python, and it works as expected when I package and install it normally -in /usr. However when packaged for installation in /opt it doesn't run -and I'm not getting (or can't find) an error message of any sort, as to what the problem might be. I was wondering if someone here has the answer. The app does require root access -using gksudo- to function. I'm fairly new to programming, but not to Linux. • Iterating selected rows in an ADF Faces table

  In OTN Harvest May 2012; http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/adf/learnmore/may2012-otn-harvest-1652358.pdf I wrote about "Common mistake when iterating <af:table> rows". In this entry I showed code to access the row associated with a selected table row from the binding layer to avoid the problem of having to programmatically change the selected table row. As it turns out, my solution only worked fro selected table rows that are in the current iterator query range. • How much to pay for artwork in an indie game?

  I am an indie developer and I need some detailed artwork. How much is reasonable to pay an artist for say 20 character designs? I know it depends on the artist's skills, etc, but I am wondering what to expect so that I can budget it. Edit: Let's say cartoon-ish art (Example - not necessarily in that level of detail but that kind of cartoony-art style). No 3-d modelling - The art will be used as still images in game and for promotional reasons. I'd provide a base sprite design for them to expand on and detail. Also, some numbers would be nice - I like numbers. Even a range is helpful. Like: expect to spend $x2 ~ $x1 for top-notch and $y2 ~ $y1 for decent quality. I understand I can ask at some indie-help site but, if an artist says something like $1000 for 20 designs, I wouldn't have any idea if it's reasonable / good deal / bad idea etc.

• How can I clone or mirror a site without SEO penalties for duplicate content?

  I am a web developer and I want to create clones of the sites I've developed for clients, so that I have an "original copy" on a subdomain of my own website, so that I can showcase my work to new clients. What is the best way to not get my clients original websites penalised for duplicate content? I am planning to have a robots.txt file that disallows all robots, as well as using <link href="http://www.client-canonical-site.com/" rel="canonical" /> in the <head> of the pages. Is that sufficient? Should I use rel=nofollow on all the links as well?

• My Last Day at Microsoft

  Wow I cant believe it has already been 13 years at Microsoft.  I have had a great time here and learned so much from the smart and passionate people I work with as well as the incredible developer community around .NET.  But I have decided it is time for me to try something new so my last day at Microsoft will be Friday, April 23rd .  While I am leaving Microsoft, I continue to have a positive view of the company.   No other company has the footprint that Microsoft does...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?   I am a java/ruby developer from the last 3yrs, trying my hands on JS now. I am fascinated by the awesome UI designs these days. Any app I make, the worst aspect is the UI and I suck at it. I end up copying a design and with a crappy one. I am a student in San Jose, CA, and will be working from next month on Java most probably. My questions are: Are there any good courses (in the the colleges in silicon valley) on web Design (Photoshop), html, css, JS? Is it worth it?

• Java to PHP job change [closed]

  I've been working with java my entire career(8 years), web servers mostly. And there is a possibility for me to start working in environment that is generally PHP based. I've never worked with PHP before except that I wrote a simple send mail html form once or twice. Is there any benefit in learning a PHP stack or this will be a complete waste of time and degradation as a developer? No offense, but I've heard terrible things about that language and I'm afraid that if people see it in my resume later that would scare them off.

• TortoiseSVN and Subclipse icons not updating with SVN? [migrated]

  I have a repository on a network share with working directories on two separate machines. Upon making changes to my local working directory and committing them, the icons are not changing on the other developer's machine. If the Dev goes to Team Synchronize with Repository it shows the changes in the Synchronize view within Eclipse, however I was expecting the icon next to the project to change if it is not in sync with the repository. The same happens with TortoiseSVN in Windows Explorer. If we right click and check the repository for modifications it shows them, however the overlay icon on the directory is still the green check box. Am I just misinterpreting what I expect to happen, or is there a way to get these icons to change if the project is no longer in sync with the repository?

• How to ramp up my data structures skills after a long hibernation

  I was pretty good with algorithms and data structures once, a long long time ago. Since then, I programmed professionally, and then went to manage a small team, which totally shot my tech skills in this field back. I've decided I want to be a developer again, and work for Google. The thing is, I'm so out of practice, that if I were to be interviewed right now I would surely flunk out in 10 minutes. What training program would you recommend for me to get back into shape? I already started this weekend by going back to the absolute basics and implementing a few sort algorithms, linked list, and hash table. Next, I think I'll read through the entire course material on the other basic data structures and graph algorithms. I want to find a focused set of practical exercises I can do in a relatively short amount of time, to juggle the old brain cells. I know this stuff - I just need to remind myself that I know it.

• Do I have to write a lot of boilerplate code if I keep working using Java?

  I'm working for a company writing ERP applications. My problem is that I have to write tons of boilerplate code. I came up with ideas to automatize/prevent the drudgery but only some of them were accepted. I have been told by the lead developer that my ideas tend to be go far afield and I should write code everyone can understand. I had a discussion about this lately and it seems to me that this kind of code ramp is within java's philosophy. I have to write lots of code to achiveve simple things not because it is necessary but because this is the way most of the people at the company think. Is this universally applicable to most of the companies out there using java or this is just my company's view? Do I have to get used to the drudgery if I keep working for java-based firms?

• How to avoid being forked into oblivion by a more powerful contributor?

  As recently reported here: Xamarin has forked Cocos2D-XNA, a 2D/3D game development framework, creating a cross-platform library that can be included in PCL projects. However the founder of the project that was forked says: The purpose of the MIT license is to unencumber your fair use. Not to encourage you to take software, rebrand it as your own, and then "take it in a new direction" as you say. While not illegal, it is unethical. It seems that the GitHub page of the new project doesn't even indicate that it's a fork in a typical GitHub manner, opting for an easily-removable History section instead (see bottom). So my questions are: Was Xamarin's action and the way the action was done ethical or not? Is it possible to avoid such a situation if you are a single developer or a small unfunded group of developers? I am hoping this could be either a wiki question or there will be some objective answers grounded on modern OSS ethics/philosophy.

• Do you think code is self documenting?

  This is a question that was put to me many years ago as a gradute in a job interview and it's nagged at my brain now and again and I've never really found a good answer that satisfied me. The interviewer in question was looking for a black and white answer, there was no middle ground. I never got the chance to ask about the rationale behind the question, but I'm curious why that question would be put to a developer and what you would learn from a yes or no answer? From my own point of view, I can read Java, Python, Delphi etc, but if my manager comes up to me and asks me how far along in a project I am and I say "The code is 80% complete" (and before you start shooting me down, I've heard this uttered in a couple of offices by developers), how exactly is that self documenting? Apologies if this question seems strange, but I'd rather ask and get some opinions on it to gain a better understanding of why it would be put to someone in an interview.

• Fastest way to set up a JSON server on my local machine [closed]

  I am a front-end developer. For many experiements I do I need to have a server that talks JSON with my client side app. Normally that server is a simple server that response to my POSTs and GETs. For example I need to setup a server that saves, modifies and read data from a "library" database like this: POST /books create a book GET /book/:id gets a book and so on... What is the fastest to set up and easiest technology stack for database and server in this case? I am open to use Ruby, Nodejs and anything that do the job fast and easy. • In which directory to write game save files/data?

  I need a definite list of directories, one or more per platform, where to put game save files and other game generated data. Either based no the OS developer specification, or because it is common usage if there is no recommandation. Please provide one answer per platform, with different directories. Also, example of how to get the directory location in C++ or C is best, as it's the language you'll have more hard time. Locations: Player's game data (saved games, config). Shared game data (like high-score or config for all computer users). Temporary game data (aka cache directory).
