• vs2010 Cache SQL data incorrect fields

  OK, I found a walkthrough on msdn for what I was after (offline database cache). However when I let the wizard create a local database from my online sql server the timespan fields are converted to a string?? Now I know the suggestion was to create my own local database and then use the MS Synch framework...however...this proclaims to do it "out of the box" However now I've a dataset which I've no idea how to use, and a database newly formed (for the synched cache) taht I will have to use Ling to Entities with(??) meanwhile I have this weird timespan to string conversion? should I give up now or push on? can i overwrite the the .designer.cs? typeof(string) to typeof(timespan)? damn wizards!!

• issue with dll's embedded manifest file.

  I have created manifest file for my.dll. my.dll has a dependency on msvcr90.dll. In auto generated manifest file contains, ( i was using MS VC++ 2008 Express Edition) In side by side(winsxs) directory, there are three version on msvcr90.dll. my.dll started to using only the latest version of msvcr90.dll (9.0.30729.4148). Here in below topics i need the help: 1) my.dll is using only the latest version of msvcr90.dll . if i tried to make this dll as old. My application fails to start. How to make contidion that my.dll should refer only to the version which i mentioned in manifest file. 2) how can i tell my.dll should dependent on the msvcr90.dll which i providing in the local directory along with my.dll. I want to restrict my my.dll should not do search in the system directory for the msvcr90.dll.

• How to mark a method as "ignore all handled exception" + "step through"? Even when user has selected

  I want to mark a method as "debug step through" even if an exception is thrown (and catched within) the function. This is because 99% of the times I know this function will throw an exception (Assembly.GetTypes), and since this function is in a library I wish to hide this normal exception. (Why did MS not add an exceptionless GetTypes() call?)   The problem I'm having is an extra  Chracter being added before the ® symbol in the body of an email created from a mailto: link in flash. This only happens on the PC in MS Outlook Instead of: MasterCard®! It shows up as MasterCard®!   hello there, I would like to know how to add a color to a line in sharepoint 2007 list if in one field there is a specific text contained ? for example : I have a list that have three fields: list1 1.id 2.name 3.full description now i want to show only the first and the second field to the user. list1 id name 1 abc 2 edv second thing, i want to give a color (let say red) to a row that contains in the hidden field - "full description", a text with the word for example 'color'. • Usability: Save changes using "Apply" button or after every single change?

  I am interested in hearing opinions and experiences of fellow developers on topic of designing user interface, usability AND maintainability-wise. Common approach is to allow users to tweak options and after form gets "dirty", enable "Apply" button, and user has possibility to back out by pressing cancel. This is most common approach on Windows platform (I believe MS usability guidelines say to do so as well). Another way is to apply changes after every single change has been made to options. Example, user checks some checkbox, and change is applied. User changes value of some text box, and change is applied after box looses focus, etc. You get the point. This approach is most common on Mac OSX. Regardless of my personal opinion (which is that Apple is better at usability, but software I usually write targets Windows users), what do you people think?

• Detecting regional settings (List Separator) from web

  After having the unpleasant surprise that Comma Seperated Value (CSV) files are not necessarily comma-separated, I'm trying to find out if there is any way to detect what the regional settings list separator value is on the client machine from http request. Scenario is as follows: A user can download some data in CSV format from web site (RoR, if it matters). That CSV file is generated on the fly, sent to the user, and most of the time double-clicked and opened in MS Excel on Windows machine at the destination. Now, if the user has ',' set as the list separator, the data is properly arranged in columns, but if any other separator (';' is widely used here) is set, it all just gets thrown into a single column. So, is there any way to detect what separator is used on the client machine, and generate the file accordingly? I have a sinking feeling that it is not, but I'd like to be sure before I pass the 'can't be done, sorry' line to the customer :)

• SQL query: how to translate IN() into a JOIN?

  I have a lot of SQL queries like this: SELECT o.Id, o.attrib1, o.attrib2 FROM table1 o WHERE o.Id IN ( SELECT DISTINCT Id FROM table1, table2, table3 WHERE ... ) These queries have to run on different database engines (MySql, Oracle, DB2, MS-Sql, Hypersonic), so I can only use common SQL syntax. Here I read, that with MySql the IN statement isn't optimized and it's really slow, so I want to switch this into a JOIN. I tried: SELECT o.Id, o.attrib1, o.attrib2 FROM table1 o, table2, table3 WHERE ... But this does not take into account the DISTINCT keyword. Question: How do I get rid of the duplicate rows using the JOIN approach?

• Design interoperable web services

  Hi everyone, I'm designing a set of web services to allow our clients to connect from their apps to one of our systems. Our clients have their apps developed in all varieties of frameworks (.NET, Java, PHP, Python and even the occasional all JS app), so obviously WS is the way to go. Investigating a little about truly interop WS I've found that the way to go is to design first the WSDL and XSD and derive the implementations from there. What i'm really looking for is guidance if this is really the way to go. I've read that WCF creates interoperable WS but i'm not a fan of MS creating something standard. Should i use WCF or there is a good set of tools for designing WSDL and XSD without the pain i'm expecting. Thanks in advance

  What is the most efficient way to find all entries which do overlap with others in the same table? Every entry has a start and end date.   Hi all We've got a system (MS SQL 2008 R2-based) that has a number of "input" database and a one "output" database. I'd like to write a query that will read from the output DB, and JOIN it to data in one of the source DB. However, the source table may be one or more individual tables :( The name of the source DB is included in the output DB; ideally, I'd like to do something like the following (pseudo-SQL ahoy) SELECT output.UID, output.description, input.data from output.dbo.description LEFT JOIN (SELECT input.UID, input.data FROM [output.sourcedb].dbo.datatable ) AS input ON input.UID=output.UID Is there any way to do something like the above - "dynamically" specify the database and table to be joined on for each row in the query?

• Launch x64 Windows application in C# while the project is set to x86

  Hi all I'm trying to launch the osk.exe and I keep getting "Could not start osk" message. The problem is that my project is set to x86 (i'm using a ms access database). If I switch to x64 or Any CPU everything works fine but the database will no longer work. I tried this using System.Diagnostics; private void btnOSK_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { Process.Start("osk.exe"); Process.Start(@"C:\windows\system32\osk.exe"); } I also tried to run SysWOWW\osk but this also didn't work. Besides my application should run on both x86 and x64 machines. Is there any way to bypass this? It's really frustrating.

• GNU linker: alternative to --version-script to list exported symbols at the command line ?

  On Linux with the GNU toolchain, I know how to control exported symbols from a shared library with a version script (gcc -Wl,--version-script=symbols.map), but I would like to list exported symbols on the command line instead. IOW, I would like the equivalent of link /EXPORT:foo from the MS toolchain. Is it possible ? EDIT: My question may not be very clearn: if I have a library libfoo.so, and I want to only export libraries foo1 and foo2, I can go create a version script foo.linux as follows libfoo.so { global: foo1; foo2; local: *; } And do gcc -shared foo.c -Wl,--version-script=foo.linux -o libfoo.so -soname libfoo.so I would like to be able to do something like this instead: gcc -shared foo.c -Wl,--export-symbol=foo1 -Wl,--export-symbol=foo2 -o libfoo.so -soname libfoo.so

• Book resources for x86/x64 assembly programming on Win platform

  Hello, I ran a search for assembly language resources on stackoverflow.com and found some interesting results, but they seemed to boil down to two groups: 1) Assembly references to old ia32 architecture, such as the 80386 to Pentium 2) Windows agnostic books. Most of the commenters make the point that assembler is CPU dependent and that the OS is irrelevant, but it seems pointless to me to pick a book that has assembly examples that refer to MS-DOS interrupts and memory layouts. Likewise, learning assembler on Linux would seem to produce Linux executables Are there any: 1) Modern 2) x86/x64 3) on Windows platform - book resources available ? The reason I am targeting the Win platform is I would like to do low-level, OS internals programming, to supplement my Win C/C++ work. Thanks

• Stored procs breaking overnight

  We are running MS SQL 2005 and we have been experiencing a very peculiar problem the past few days. I have two procs, one that creates an hourly report of data. And another that calls it, puts its results in a temp table, and does some aggregations, and returns a summary. They work fine...until the next morning. The next morning, suddenly the calling report, complains about an invalid column name. The fix, is simply a recompile of the calling proc, and all works well again. How can this happen? It's happened three nights in a row since moving these procs into production.

  I have wanted to learn VB and VBA for a long time. My school offers a coarse, but it doesn't fit with the rest of my schedule. It will be my first programing language. I was considering using the textbook my school uses (An introduction to programing using visual basic 2008, but I wold get the 2010 version), but I was wondering if there were better resources I could use. I mainly want to lean to learn VBA so I cam create macros and other tools for MS Word. • Assigning large UInt32 constants in VB.Net

  I inquired on VB's erratic behavior of treating all numerics as signed types back in this question, and from the accepted answer there, was able to get by. Per that answer: Visual Basic Literals Also keep in mind you can add literals to your code in VB.net and explicitly state constants as unsigned. So I tried this: Friend Const POW_1_32 As UInt32 = 4294967296UI And VB.NET throws an Overflow error in the IDE. Pulling out the integer overflow checks doesn't seem to help -- this appears to be a flaw in the IDE itself. This, however, doesn't generate an error: Friend Const POW_1_32 As UInt64 = 4294967296UL So this suggests to me that the IDE isn't properly parsing the code and understanding the difference between Int32 and UInt32. Any suggested workarounds and/or possible clues on when MS will make unsigned data types intrinsic to the framework instead of the hacks they currently are?

• Help with setting up panels in Java

  I'm new to Java awt, so I am having trouble with setting up panels. I have one giant panel, which needs to hold 3 panels inside (photo is attached at the bottom). One will go on top(1), second one will be in the middle(3), and third goes on the bottom(2). Any remaining space has to be divided equally between (1)/(3) and (3)/(2). Also, the middle panel (3) is a table, so GridLayout has to be used. How can I achieve this? Thanks in advance! P.S. I've tried to draw it in MS Paint (http://i45.tinypic.com/2w523ie.jpg)

• C++ - Resources in static library question

  Hello! This isn't a duplicate of http://stackoverflow.com/questions/531502/vc-resources-in-a-static-library because it didn't help :) I have a static library with TWO .rc files in it's project. When I build my project using the Debug configuration, I retrieve the following error (MSVS2008): fatal error LNK1241: resource file res_yyy.res already specified Note, that this happens only in Debug and Release library builds without any troubles. The command line for Resources page in project configuration looks the same for every build: /fo"...(Path here)/Debug/project_name.res" /fo"...(Path here)/Release/project_name.res" and I can't understand what's the trouble. Any ideas? UPDATE I don't know why this happens, but when I turn "Use Link-Time Code Generation" option on the problem goes away. Could somebody explain why does this happen? I feel like MS-compiler is doing something really strange here. Thanks.

• Why do a small amount of add/deletes take several seconds in EF4?

  Using the Entity Framework 4. I have created a Code First database in the past and a piece of code needs to delete and add 16 objects, this takes 6 seconds each. That's 300+ ms for each query! The deletes/adds occur in a foreach scope and there is a SaveChanges() outside the foreach. In the above image you see that each takes 6 seconds, which is 34% of the time, for 16 calls. That doesn't sound normal to me... Why is this and how can I improve the performance? If there is no solution: Are there any workarounds I can use? It would be a pain to rewrite my project...

• Boost Filesystem Library Visual C++ Compile Error

  I'm having the following issue just trying to compile/run some of the example programs with the Boost Filesystem Library. I'm using MS-Visual C++ with Visual Studio .NET (2003). I've installed the Boost libraries, version 1.38 and 1.39 (just in case there was a version problem) using the BoostPro installers. If I just try to include /boost/filesystem/operations.hpp I receive the following error: \boost_1_38\boost\system\error_code.hpp(230) : error C2039: 'type' : is not a member of 'boost::enable_if<boost::system::is_error_condition_enum<Cond,boost::detail::enable_if_default_T>' Any help is greatly appreciated. • Column.DbType affecting runtime behavior

  Hi According to the MSDN docs, the DbType property/attribute of a Column type/element is only used for database creation. Yet, today, when trying to submit data to an IMAGE column on a SQLCE database (not sure if only on CE), I got an exception of 'Data truncated to 8000 bytes'. This was due to the DbType still being defined as VARBINARY(MAX) which SQLCE does not support. Changing the type to IMAGE in the DbType fixes the issue. So what other surprises does Linq2SQL attributes hold in store? Is this a bug or intended? Should I report it to MS? UPDATE After getting the answer from Guffa, I tested it, but it seems for NVARCHAR(10) adding a 11 char length string causes a SQL exception, and not Linq2SQL one. The data was truncated while converting from one data type to another. • Seeking tutorial: introduction to ODBC with Delphi

  I have a lot of embedded C/C++/Ada experience and an outdated smattering of Delphi plus some database stuff. Now I have to implement an app in Delphi which can manipulate MySql, Oracle, maybe MS Access. In short, I need ODBC. I need to programmatically created a database, define its structure and populate its contents, then later query its existence and programmatically search. I would prefer not to use 3rd party components, unless there is a compelling reason to do so (performance ought not to be an issue for the app, it won't have much data or be run often, at least not in v1.0) . Can anyone point me at a tutorial which can get me up to speed? Thanks

  This is my simple query; By searching selectnothing I'm sure I'll have no hits. SELECT nome_t FROM myTable WHERE nome_t ILIKE '%selectnothing%'; This is the EXPLAIN ANALYZE VERBOSE Seq Scan on myTable (cost=0.00..15259.04 rows=37 width=29) (actual time=2153.061..2153.061 rows=0 loops=1) Output: nome_t Filter: (nome_t ~~* '%selectnothing%'::text) Total runtime: 2153.116 ms myTable has around 350k rows and the table definition is something like: CREATE TABLE myTable ( nome_t text NOT NULL, ) I have an index on nome_t as stated below: CREATE INDEX idx_m_nome_t ON myTable USING btree (nome_t); Although this is clearly a good candidate for Fulltext search I would like to rule that option out for now. This query is meant to be run from a web application and currently it's taking around 2 seconds which is obviously too much; Is there anything I can do, like using other index methods, to improve the speed of this query?
