• Find which files an apache process is writing to?

  We have this apache process which becomes io-bound time to time. Using atop, we can see it is a write operation. Using lsof -p <PID> we can see a list of files open by the httpd process. First we thought "log" files must be the problem. So we turned them off just to test. However write operations still continues. We will continue testing a few other things. For instance we use php session variables a lot. Maybe php session files are getting all the writing. But is there a way to quickly identify files which get written to by the httpd process? This way we can focus our efforts on those files. UPDATE: We used the strace command as suggested. Here are two lines from the output. write(23, "\27\0\0\0\3SET CHARACTER SET utf8", 27) = 27 write(23, "\17\0\0\0\3SET NAMES utf8", 19) = 19 We do not have a mysql process on this server. So is strace also showing what is being written to an ethernet port? UPDATE2: During high io load, the process which consumes most of the write resources gives the following output to strace -e trace=write -p <PID>: --- SIGCHLD (Child exited) @ 0 (0) --- write(9, "!", 1) = 1 write(19, "OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0\r\nUser-Agent: Apache (internal dummy connection)\r\n\r\n", 70) = 70 However I cannot figure out where these are being written to.

• Why do you hate Java? Is it the language or the framework? [closed]

  According to you all, Java is the third most-hated language here. The two other most hated languages are PHP and VBScript. (It's quite funny how they stand together on the podium.) I'd like to make it known that the question mostly addresses people who don't like Java. I assume here a number of subjective opinions as facts because they're usually considered true among people who don't like Java, and I don't want to be convinced otherwise here. If you're a Java enthusiast, you might find this question frustrating. It's never been made clear if people hate Java itself, or if they hate it because of the framework, or if it's a mixture of the two. On a side you have the language, where you have: the "everything should be an object" philosophy, even in instances where it should obviously be something else (event handlers I'm pointing you); checked exceptions; the idea that all logic should be presented as methods and properties is a big no-no; the fact that "closures" created by anonymous types only include final variables and arguments, but will allow write access to any member of the parent class; a few more. On the other side, you have the JDK, with... its load of inconsistencies and overengineering; monolithic class hierarchies; meaningless base exceptions like IOException (though other frameworks have similar exception hierarchies); sluggish responsiveness even with Swing; a few more. My question is, do you think that, if either one (Java or the JDK) was taken alone, and the other was dropped in favor of something else, the new combination would be better? For instance, if you could use the C# syntax with the JDK (adapting get*/set* methods into properties, and interfaces with only one method into delegates), or the Java syntax with the .NET Framework (doing the inverse transformations), would things get better in your opinion?

• How to break the "php is a bad language" paradigm? [closed]

  PHP is not a bad language (or at least not as bad as some may suggest). I had teachers that didn't even know PHP was object oriented until I told them. I've had clients that immediately distrust us when we say we are PHP developers and question us for not using chic languages and frameworks such as Django or RoR, or "enterprise and solid" languages such as Java and ASP.NET. Facebook is built on PHP. There are plenty of solid projects that power the web like Joomla and Drupal that are used in the enterprise and governments. There are frameworks and libraries that have some of the best architectures I've seen across all languages (Symfony 2, Doctrine). PHP has the best documentation I've seen and a big community of professionals. PHP has advanced OO features such as reflection, interfaces, let alone that PHP now supports horizontal reuse natively and cleanly through traits. There are bad programmers and script kiddies that give PHP a bad reputation, but power the PHP community at the same time, and because it is so easy to get stuff done PHP you can often do things the wrong way, granted, but why blame the language?. Now, to boil this down to an actual answerable question: what would be a good and solid and short and sweet argument to avoid being frowned upon and stop prejudice in one fell swoop and defend your honor when you say you are a PHP developer?. • Where to go after having a good grasp of a language?

  I have been programming as a hobby for the past few years now (most of high school and 1 year in cs in college) and although I've came to the conclusion that a career in CS isn't for me I switched over to math (which pairs what I love about programming with my interest in physical sciences) but I miss writing code. Recently I've had an interest in low-level programming. Understanding how compilers work, learning some basics of assembly language and trying to get out of my comfort zone. The problem is that since I've been out of the CS programs, I'm not faced with much opportunities to write code. I do intend to take a few CS classes in college (a lot of CS stuff is opened to math majors) but that won't come for until next year. So I ask: What are the steps to take in order to keep improving as a programmer once you're passed the basic steps? How do you find projects to keep you going? Beside my newly discovered interest in assembly language, I've been writing code in C and have been interested in FOSS. Thanks!

  I think I'm not totally wrong when thinking that C++0x (or C++1x) is still C++, just better, with functionnalities coming from boost. I can't stop thinking that computer sciences, even with all that has been made so far, have to evolve again. I don't really like D since it just try to be some sort of "what C++ should have been", and Go seems to be too sophisticated when I dig a little into it, especially after watching some presentation video like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKnDgT73v8s The first thing that come into my mind is a new kind of syntax to directly handle specific datatypes and containers such as map, vectors, queues... What kind of things are researchers thinking about ? What are the real features that could make C++ better or a new C-like language could invent ? Does Go features such things ? Would there be a new kind of syntax that would "unbloat" C++ while keeping its advantages ? Could C++ have some of the interesting stuff of languages such as C# and ObjC ? EDIT: Please consider that I'm talking about a system language, not a VM/CLI/bytecode thing.

  Few weeks ago, I implemented translation functionality for the website of my company. The website is now available in french and english and I did look on the internet the best way to do if we want to do not lose any ranking and to have our pages on Google. Here is what I did: I did set a response header: Content-Language:en and Content-Language:fr My URLs are formatted as: http://www.website.com/en/... and http://www.website.com/fr/... My html tag is set with a lang attribute: <html lang="en"> and <html lang="fr"> There is a <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="EnglishPageUrl"> on french pages and a <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="frenchPageUrl"> on english pages. But Google keeps referring to some english pages when I'm doing a search on french engine, knowing that the website was first only available in english. Is that normal? Do I have to wait still, it has been now almost one month, I thought it would be okay...? Thank you.

• How are objects modelled in a functional programming language?

  In an answer to this question (written by Pete) there are some considerations about OOP versus FP. In particular, it is suggested that FP languages are not very suitable for modelling (persistent) objects that have an identity and a mutable state. I was wondering if this is true or, in other words, how one would model objects in a functional programming language. From my basic knowledge of Haskell I thought that one could use monads in some way, but I really do not know enough on this topic to come up with a clear answer. So, how are entities with an identity and a mutable persistent state normally modelled in a functional language? EDIT Here are some further details to clarify what I have in mind. Take a typical Java application in which I can (1) read a record from a database table into a Java object, (2) modify the object in different ways, (3) save the modified object to the database. How would this be implemented e.g. in Haskell? I would initially read the record into a record value (defined by a data definition), perform different transformations by applying functions to this initial value (each intermediate value is a new, modified copy of the original record) and then write the final record value to the database. Is this all there is to it? How can I ensure that at each moment in time only one copy of the record is valid / accessible? One does not want to have different immutable values representing different snapshots of the same object to be accessible at the same time.

Programmer A has been working on PHP for some years, and has had prior experience in C.C++ during algorithm courses in university. The current fluency is good is PHP,but C,C++ can also be brushed up. So for interviews with major companies who put lot of emphasis on algorithms and data structures in programming interview e.g. binary trees, linked lists, arrays , strings . What should programmer A do ? Try to implement those things in PHP ( which is generally more suited for web development rather than programming contests/interviews ) or Or brush up the C,C++ skills and keep them as primary tool for tackling interview questions. What are advantages/ disadvantages of each language for an environment like programming contest or an interview ?   Hi, I solved this problem by following a straightforward but not optimal algorithm. I sorted the vector in descending order and after that substracted numbers from max to min to see if I get a + b + c = d. Notice that I haven't used anywhere the fact that elements are natural, distinct and 10 000 at most. I suppose these details are the key. Does anyone here have a hint over an optimal way of solving this? Thank you in advance! • SEO non-English domain name advice

  I'm starting a website, that is meant for a non-English region, using an alphabet that is a bit different than that of English. Current plan is as follows. The website name, and the domain name, will be in the local language (not English); however, domain name will be spelled in the English alphabet, while the website's title will be the same word(s), but spelled properly with accents. E.g.: 'www.litterat.fr' and 'Littérat'. Does the difference between domain name and website name character use influence the site's SEO? Is it better, SEO-wise, to choose a name that can be spelled the same way in the English alphabet? From my experience, when searching online, invariably, the English alphabet is used, no matter the language, so people will still be searching 'litterat' (without accents and such). Edit: To sum up: Things have been said about IDN (Internationalized domain name). To make it simple, they are second-level domain names that contain language specific characters (LSP)(e.g. www.café.fr). Here you can check what top-level domains support what LSPs. Check initall's answer for more info on using LSPs in paths and queries. To answer my question about how and if search engines relate keywords spelled with and without language specific characters: Google can potentially tell that series and séries is the same keyword. However, (most relevant for words that are spelled differently across languages and have different meanings, like séries), for Google to make the connection (or lack thereof) between e and é, it has to deduce two things: Language that you are searching in. Language of your query. You can specify it manually through Advanced search or it guesses it, sometimes. I presume it can guess it wrong too. The more keywords specific to this language you use the higher Google's chance to guess the language. Language of the crawled document, against which the ASCII version of the word will be compared (in this example – series). Again, check initall's answer for how to help Google in understanding what language your document is in. Once it has that it can tell whether or not these two spellings should be treated as the same keyword. Google has to understand that even though you're not using french (in this example) specific characters, you're searching in French. The reason why I used the french word séries in this example, is that it demonstrates this very well. You have it in French and you have it in English without the accent. So if your search query is ambiguous like our series, unless Google has something more to go on, it will presume that there's no correlation between your search and séries in French documents. If you augment your query to series romantiques (try it), Google will understand that you're searching in French and among your results you'll see séries as well. But this does not always work, you should test it out with your keywords first. For example, if you search series francaises, it will associate francaises with françaises, but it will not associate series with séries. It depends on the words. Note: worth stressing that this problem is very relevant to words that, written in plain ASCII, might have some other meanings in other languages, it is less relevant to words that can be, by a distinct margin, just some one language. Tip: I've noticed that sometimes even if my non-accented search query doesn't get associated with the properly spelled word in a document (especially if it's the title or an important keyword in the doc), it still comes up. I followed the link, did a Ctrl-F search for my non-accented search query and found nothing, then checked the meta-tags in the source and you had the page's title in both accented and non-accented forms. So if you have meta-tags that can be spelled with language specific characters and without, put in both. Footnote: I hope this helps. If you have anything to add or correct, go ahead.

  I am creating a core-data based Navigation iPhone app with multiple screens. Let's say it is a flash-card application. The data model is very simple, with only two entities: Language, and CardSet. There is a one-to-many relationship between the Language entity and the CardSet entities, so each Language may contain multiple CardSets. In other words, Language has a one-to-many relationship Language.cardSets which points to the list of CardSets, and CardSet has a relationship CardSet.language which points to the Language. There are two screens: (1) An initial TableView screen, which displays the list of languages; and (2) a secondary TableView screen, which displays the list of CardSets in the Language. In the initial screen, which lists the languages, I am using NSFetchedResultsController to keep the list of languages up-to-date. The screen passes the Language selected to the secondary screen. On the secondary screen, I am trying to figure out whether I should again use an NSFetchedResultsController to maintain the list of CardSets, or if I should work through Language.cardSets to simply pull the list out of the object model. The latter makes the most sense programatically because I already have the Language - but then it would not automatically be updated on changes. I have looked at the NSFetchedResultsController documentation, and it seems like I can easily create predicates based on attributes - but not relationships. I.e., I can create the following NSFetchedResultsController: NSPredicate *predicate = [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"name LIKE[c] 'Chuck Norris'"]; How can I access my data through the direct relationship - Language.cardSets - and also have the table auto-update using NSFetchedResultsController? Is this possible?

• C#: Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture not working consistently

  I've been working on a pet project on the weekends to learn more about C# and have encountered an odd problem when working with localization. To be more specific, the problem I have is with System.Threading.Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture. I've set up my app so that the user can quickly change the language of the app by clicking a menu item. The menu item in turn, saves the two-letter code for the language (e.g. "en", "fr", etc.) in a user setting called 'Language' and then restarts the application. Properties.Settings.Default.Language = "en"; Properties.Settings.Default.Save(); Application.Restart(); When the application is started up, the first line of code in the Form's constructor (even before InitializeComponent()) fetches the Language string from the settings and sets the CurrentUICulture like so: public Form1() { Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture = new CultureInfo(Properties.Settings.Default.Language); InitializeComponent(); } The thing is, this doesn't work consistently. Sometimes, all works well and the application loads the correct language based on the string saved in the settings file. Other times, it doesn't, and the language remains the same after the application is restarted. At first I thought that I didn't save the language before restarting the application but that is definitely not the case. When the correct language fails to load, if I were to close the application and run it again, the correct language would come up correctly. So this implies that the Language string has been saved but the CurrentUICulture assignment in my form constructor is having no effect sometimes. Any help? Is there something I'm missing of how threading works in C#? This could be machine-specific, so if it makes any difference I'm using Pentium Dual-Core CPU.

  Hi, My W2K3 server was running TFS 2008 SP1, SQL Server 2005 Development edition. I installed SQL Server 2008 Standard. I installed it while leaving SQL Server 2005 alone. Upgrading was not possible due to the differences in editions of the SQL Servers. Now TFS is broken. On a client computer, if I go Team - Connect to Team Foundation Server, I get this error: Team Foundation services are not available from server myserver. There are a variety of tools available to help you and Support diagnose SOA Suite issues in 11g but it can be confusing as to which tool is appropriate for a particular situation and what their relationships are. This blog post will introduce the various tools and attempt to clarify what each is for and how they are related. Let's first list the tools we'll be addressing: RDA: Remote Diagnostic Agent DFW: Diagnostic Framework Selective Tracing DMS: Dynamic Monitoring Service ODL: Oracle Diagnostic Logging ADR: Automatic Diagnostics Repository ADRCI: Automatic Diagnostics Repository Command Interpreter WLDF: WebLogic Diagnostic Framework This overview is not mean to be a comprehensive guide on using all of these tools, however, extensive reference materials are included that will provide many more details on their execution. Another point to note is that all of these tools are applicable for Fusion Middleware as a whole but specific products may or may not have implemented features to leverage them. • How to pass XML to DB using XMLTYPE

  Probably not a common use case but I have seen it pop up from time to time. The question how do I pass XML from a queue or web service and insert it into a DB table using XMLTYPE.In this example I create a basic table with the field PAYLOAD of type XMLTYPE. I then take the full XML payload of the web service and insert it into that database for auditing purposes.I use SOA Suite 11.1.1.2 using composite and mediator to link the web service with the DB adapter.1.   According to this thread Java and JVM license You can write a compiler that implements the Java Language Specification or write a JVM that implements the Java Virtual Machine specification, but when you officially want to call it "Java", you have to prove it is compatible by passing the tests of the TCK (technology compatibility kit) and pay for a license from Oracle. So, how can Google (or any other java implementation for that matter) claims that Dalvik is a Java virtual machine?
