• Can I set up a 2nd home wireless router, with router2 connecting to the internet through a desktop which is wirelessly connected to router1?

  Hi, I apologize for the crudeness of my MSPaint drawing, but please view my diagram of what I'd like to accomplish: Proposed home network architecture Currently, all devices are connected to 1 wireless router. I would like to make my own subnet, with a box in-between my subnet and the shared wireless router, so that I can learn about IDS, traffic analysis, etc. I was also given a cisco PIX firewall to play around with, and it'd be an added bonus if I could incorporate that into my network. The reason for this proposed architecture is so that I can monitor all MY traffic, without seeing anything going on with my roommates' traffic. my MAIN Question is, is it possible to have my desktop connect to the wireless router with internet via wireless card AND share that connection via the ethernet card, hooked to wireless router 2? cable modem - wireless router - desktop pc connected wirelessly - wireless router 2 getting internet from wired connection to desktop pc - laptops connected wirelessly The PIX can be left out for now, but I'm wondering if it could eventually be incorporated? • How can I register a custom protocol with xdg?

  I've been struggling this morning trying to associate an application with a custom protocol, namely emacsclient and org-protocol. I'm calling this protocol from a webbrowser bookmarklet, and I get the following behaviour : In chromium, the "Launch Application" dialog comes up, and calls xdg-open org-protocol://... which ends up firing a new chromium frame. In firefox, I've tried setting network.protocol-handler.app.org-protocol to an empty string or my emacsclient path, anyhow I get the following error message : "Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (org-protocol) isn't associated with any program" without even showing any external application selection dialog. I'm not using any desktop environment, so I need to make this work strictly with xdg, however, despite reading the shared mime info spec etc, I still can't fathom a working configuration.

• High disk time on sql-server

  Hi We have a dedicated sql-server 2008 r2 enterprise edition. The setup is: D: (data files) - stored on local ssd disks (not the same disks as log files) (raid 10) E: (log files) - stored on local ssd disks (not the same disks as data files) (raid 1) F: (transaction log backup) - stored remote on a SAN Today we moved our log files to new disks (from F: to E:). From a shared volume ( F:(SAN)) to dedicated local disks (E:). What then happend was that the "disk time", "avg. transfer time" and "avg disk write queue length" increased on the volume where we have the data files (D:) (not on the volume where the log files are located). The data volume and log volume does not share disks, however they share the same controller card. "Disk idle time" is low for all volumes. One thought is ofcourse that the controller card might be overloaded. But, we need more ideas on where the problem might be.

• How does azure memory usage work?

  I have a windows azure website. In the dashboard it shows me that I have used 1.51 GB of the 2GB available per hour. I keep increasing the number of instances available in the shared node so the site doesn't shut down. After each hour finishes, the memory usage still shows 1.51 GB used. I assume this would start at ZERO and then be used as time goes on, but that doesn't appear to be the case. How does server memory work? What are some reasons my application using this much memory? (I use no output caching and generally have just built off of the basic MVC templates provided in visual studio.) What other considerations should I be making to get the amount of memory needed to decrease?

Remote desktop. can the NIC2 on each of the hosts be connected to the other public LAN (compromising speed or security? what are improtant considerations: additional hardware? like switches? routing&DNS software? currently available hardware : Dell Powerconnect 6224 switch .... planning this for storage network. software: windows 2003 server for DHCP, DNS, A/D ? would it be more flexible to use Linux distributions like IPCOP, Untangle etc? all that I am looking for is good isolation between private and other networks, avoid DHCP, DNS, AD clashes.

• How do you have one IP address and many websites?

  Hi, How can I have it where I have one IP address that sits on the Internet but many web names? For example, when a hosting company has a shared IP but I get unlimited domain names (along with everyone else on that box). I have a box on the Internet but I want to point to another machine that holds a different website when someone types in the different www...(it's sitting right next to it in just a different box). So the above events show up when am in the month view but mysteriously absent when am in week or day view. What am doing wrong here? Thanks in advance for your answers.

• Qnap won't connect to Windows Share

  I have a qnap nmp-1000 in my network and would like to stream my films from my win7 laptop to the nmap-1000 device. I just managed to do so with upnp sharing, but I would like to, for security reasons, share my files over a shared folder which is password protected. My problem is when I'm searching for devices on my network with the qnap then it won't find any. When I try to mount a remote disk on my qnap it will just fail with an connection failed message. But when I try to connect to the qnap device with my laptop, it does this succesfully. Can someone guide me through on how to get my setup working?

• Sync Banshee library data.

  I use Banshee to organise my music, I particularly like its scoring system and I have smart playlists based on it. However, I have two versions of my music library, one on each of my computers. As one of the computers is small I only have a favourite set of songs on that computer rather than my whole collection. The computers are not on a local network, but I do use Ubuntu One for file sharing between them. Is there any way I can synchronise song data (play count, score, skip count ...) and playlist data (including smart playlists that include songs based on this data) between the two computers? This would only be relevant of course for the songs that exist on both computers, the songs that exist on only one would need to be ignored. I did consider putting the library data file (I think it is .xml but I'm not sure) into the shared file and creating a symbolic link to it, but then I wouldn't be able to have a different set of songs on each computer. • Domain pointing to wrong subscription in Plesk 10

  I recently moved a domain name in the Plesk 10 control panel from one subscription to another. DNS is managed by another server so there is no change in DNS at all. The IP address is shared and remains the same so there is really no need for a DNS change. But the domain is still managed by its former subscription (where it should have been removed from) and is pointing to exactly the same folder as in the past, even when is not in the list of domains there. Subsequently, the new subscription do not have the domain under its control. Even this domain is in list of domains here and points to another folder.

• Virtual OS using same Wallpaper as Host

  Greetings, I'm running a guest Linux OS on top of Windows XP, which rotates its wallpapers using the PowerToy Wallpaper Changer. I'm hoping for a way for my guest OS to somehow detect which wallpaper the host is using, and automatically switch to it. Why? Because if I run my guest OS in seamless mode and have transparent windows, I want the transparent background to match the host OS. It looks nice that way :). A couple tidbits of relevant information: Guest OS is Peppermint Ice (Ubuntu based) Host OS is Windows XP VirtualBox as virtualization software I realize this is somewhat breaking borders between the host and the guest, but I want my pretty rotating wallpaper! I'm guessing there is a way using scripts and shared folders or something similar, if not by means of just querying the host OS.

• How to use 2 or more internet connections on the same network?

  Living in a joint family we have 3 internet connections, each floor has one internet connection which is split per floor. Each internet connection is shared between 4-5 computers using a switch per floor. Each of these internet sharing networks are independent of each other. What I want to achieve here is a local network (for local messenger and file sharing) that can combine all the 3 independent networks, problem is that whenever I try to do that the whole network tends to use just one internet connection. I have all the necessary hardware. How do I solve this problem, one approach could be that I could get one PC to act as a server and bridge the internet connections and then the whole network would have to access the internet through this server. Theoretically this could be possible but I have never tried this approach in real life. Also if certain computers need be restricted from internet access how would this be possible on the same network?

• Check if folders exist in Git repository... testing if a sub-string exists in bash with NULL as a separator

  I have a common git "post-receive" script for several projects, and it needs to perform different actions if an /app/ or /public/ folder exists in the root. Using: FOLDERS=`git ls-tree -d --name-only -z master`; I can see the directory listing, and I would like to use the RegExp support in bash to run something like: if [[ "$FOLDERS" =~ app ]]; then ... fi But that won't work if there was something like an "app lication" folder... I specified the "-z" option in the git "ls-tree" command so I could use the \0 (null) character as a separator, but not sure how to test for that in the bash RegExp. Likewise I know there is support for specifying a particular path in the ls-tree command, and could then pipe that to "wc -l", but I'd have thought it was quicker to get a full directory listing of the root (not recursive) then test for the 2 (or more) folders with the returned output. • iSCSI SAN RAID 10 Performance -- Poor Read, Good Write

  I have a EqualLogic PS4000 SAN unit with the latest firmware, setup in RAID 10. I have 3 2TB Volumes on the SAN shared out via iSCSI on 2 eth ports on two different subnets. I have moved a test server over to this newly setup SAN, and my testing is showing me a problem. I am getting dismal read performance in everything except a test with 32 queue depth (see attach image) Write performance seems to be right about where it should be. I have tried MPIO on and off, on was slightly better but not much.

I am also using a bad (outdated) version of RDP that has security vulnerabilities, so stunnel is a must. I will preshare the necessary .pem's between machines. What are the openssl commands I need to create the right .pem files on both the client and on the server? What files need to be shared?

• Reverse DNS for two ADs in the same subnet

  I currently have two separate AD forests that exist within the same subnet. The two forests have independent copies of the reverse lookup zone for that subnet. Example: Domain A DC1: 10.1.1.1/24 Domain A DC2: 10.1.1.2/24 Domain A AppServer1:10.1.1.3/24 Domain B DC1: 10.1.1.11/24 Domain B DC2: 10.1.1.12/24 Domain B Appserver1:10.1.1.13/24 What I'm after, is a configuration that allows this reverse zone to be shared between them so that both sets of DNS servers can make updates to the zone. This kind of thing is a little far from my everday work, so a kick in the right direction is a welcome suggestion as well. Decoupling one AD into new segments is a possibility I'm open to but would like to avoid if possible. If there is a DNS related solution I'd prefer that.

• Is there a specific name for the ".\" (dot-slash) shorthand used to log onto a Windows machine?

  I guess the title just about says it all. And yes, .\, not that obsolete \. thing. :) For those who don't know, .\ is a shorthand way of saying "this computer" in Windows at a logon screen, which comes in very handy when you don't know or care about the local computer name but need to authenticate against it anyway, such as through RDP or scripting against a set of shared local users and passwords or even locally, if you're unlucky enough to have to physically go to a machine. Anyway, does this have an actual name, and if so, what is it? I feel kind of stupid saying the dot-slash thing, which is how I've been referring to this.

I want to iterate over all users (in users.csv), and in their home folder (e.g. /home/joe) find all php files recursively, and replace each occurrence of "commondb" with their own databasename, e.g. "joedb" for "joe".
