• design pattern for unit testing?

  I am beginner in developing test cases, and want to follow good patterns for developing test cases rather than following some person or company's specific ideas. Some people don't make test cases and just develop the way their senior have done in their projects. I am facing lot problems like object dependencies (when want to test method which persist A object i have to first persist B object since A is child of B). Please suggest some good books or sites preferably for learning design pattern for unit test cases. Or reference to some good source code or some discussion for Dos and Donts will do wonder. So that i can avoid doing mistakes be learning from experience of others.

• Isolated Unit Tests and Fine Grained Failures

  One of the reasons often given to write unit tests which mock out all dependencies and are thus completely isolated is to ensure that when a bug exists, only the unit tests for that bug will fail. (Obviously, an integration tests may fail as well). That way you can readily determine where the bug is. But I don't understand why this is a useful property. If my code were undergoing spontaneous failures, I could see why its useful to readily identify the failure point. But if I have a failing test its either because I just wrote the test or because I just modified the code under test. In either case, I already know which unit contains a bug. What is the useful in ensuring that a test only fails due to bugs in the unit under test? I don't see how it gives me any more precision in identifying the bug than I already had.

• ScriptAlias makes requests match too many Location blocks. What is going on?

  We wish to restrict access on our development server to those users who have a valid SSL Client certificate. We are running Apache 2.2.16 on Debian 6. However, for some sections (mainly git-http, setup with gitolite on https://my.server/git/) we need an exception since many git clients don't support SSL client certificates. I have succeeded in requiring client cert authentication for the server, and in adding exceptions for some locations. However, it seems this does not work for git. The current setup is as follows: SSLCACertificateFile ssl-certs/client-ca-certs.crt <Location /> SSLVerifyClient require SSLVerifyDepth 2 </Location> # this works <Location /foo> SSLVerifyClient none </Location> # this does not <Location /git> SSLVerifyClient none </Location> I have also tried an alternative solution, with the same results: # require authentication everywhere except /git and /foo <LocationMatch "^/(?!git|foo)"> SSLVerifyClient require SSLVerifyDepth 2 </LocationMatch> In both these cases, a user without client certificate can perfectly access my.server/foo/, but not my.server/git/ (access is refused because no valid client certificate is given). If I disable SSL client certificate authentication completely, my.server/git/ works ok. The ScriptAlias problem Gitolite is setup using the ScriptAlias directive. I have found that the problem occurs with any similar ScriptAlias: # Gitolite ScriptAlias /git/ /path/to/gitolite-shell/ ScriptAlias /gitmob/ /path/to/gitolite-shell/ # My test ScriptAlias /test/ /path/to/test/script/ Note that /path/to/test/script is a file, not a directory, the same goes for /path/to/gitolite-shell/ My test script simply prints out the environment, super simple: #!/usr/bin/perl print "Content-type:text/plain\n\n"; print "TEST\n"; @keys = sort(keys %ENV); foreach (@keys) { print "$_ => $ENV{$_}\n"; } It seems that if I go to https://my.server/test/someLocation, that any SSLVerifyClient directives are being applied which are in Location blocks that match /test/someLocation or just /someLocation. If I have the following config: <LocationMatch "^/f"> SSLVerifyClient require SSLVerifyDepth 2 </LocationMatch> Then, the following URL requires a client certificate: https://my.server/test/foo. However, the following URL does not: https://my.server/test/somethingElse/foo Note that this only seems to apply for SSL configuration. The following has no effect whatsoever on https://my.server/test/foo: <LocationMatch "^/f"> Order allow,deny Deny from all </LocationMatch> However, it does block access to https://my.server/foo. This presents a major problem for cases where I have some project running at https://my.server/project (which has to require SSL client certificate authorization), and there is a git repository for that project at https://my.server/git/project which cannot require a SSL client certificate. Since the /git/project URL also gets matched agains /project Location blocks, such a configuration seems impossible given my current findings. Question: Why is this happening, and how do I solve my problem? In the end, I want to require SSL Client certificate authorization for the whole server except for /git and /someLocation, with as minimal configuration as possible (so I don't have to modify the configuration each time something new is deployed or a new git repository is added). Note: I rewrote my question (instead of just adding more updates at the bottom) to take into account my new findings and hopefully make this more clear.

  I've trolled the internets to make hdmi work on my system Ubuntu 12.04 software center kernel 3.5 uname: Linux ubuntu 3.5.0-18-generic #29~precise1-Ubuntu SMP...x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux open source radeon drivers vgaswitcheroo (hybrid intel/radeon gpu): I boot with intel, not radeon, running. (and recall that with kernel 3.5, vgaswitcheroo now gives info on a third item, "DIS-Audio"; it indicates pwr on my system) ( /etc/rc.local: chown user:user /sys/kernel/debug/ # change "username" with your user name echo OFF /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch ) grub indeed now has "radeon.audio=1" for testing audio, I did aplay -l which gave me the card and device, which made me try aplay -D plughw:1,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav and lo! I get crystal clear sound on my hdtv. If I play an mp3 file as the argument to that command, I get noise as, I guess, aplay interprets the mp3 code as a wav. If I play a .wav that is not in the /usr/share/sounds/alsa/ directory, I get nothing. Internet flash video in browser plays no sound over hdmi. Both system sounds control and pavucontrol have hdmi cedar selected. Alas, I can not get sound for any gui test (left, right). Why would only aplay, and only when directed with "-D plughw", yield sound over hdmi? I've also tried only using one sound program at a time, if it was a limitation of alsa, so I tried aplay with web browser and even the sound control gui closed. I tried each of the last two, running alone. No improvement. alsamixer only shows hda intel and I think it's only the intel audio, not the hdmi.

• Configuring A Subdomain (cPanel) - www works, subdomain on it's own doesn't

  I've created a sub domain on my website using cPanel at test.mydomain.com, and this created a folder in my main 'www' directory called test. In this folder is a folder called cgi-bin, and it seems to redirect the page to say "It works!", but when I upload my own index.html file to the test directory it keeps showing http://test.mydomain.com/cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi instead of the index file. If I go to www.test.mydomain.com then it works OK. How do I host my content at the sub domain? It's my first time setting one up so I'm a bit lost.

• Is it feasible and useful to auto-generate some code of unit tests?

  Earlier today I have come up with an idea, based upon a particular real use case, which I would want to have checked for feasability and usefulness. This question will feature a fair chunk of Java code, but can be applied to all languages running inside a VM, and maybe even outside. While there is real code, it uses nothing language-specific, so please read it mostly as pseudo code. The idea Make unit testing less cumbersome by adding in some ways to autogenerate code based on human interaction with the codebase. I understand this goes against the principle of TDD, but I don't think anyone ever proved that doing TDD is better over first creating code and then immediatly therafter the tests. This may even be adapted to be fit into TDD, but that is not my current goal. Writing these tests is not fun, you need to ensure a number of conditions and you check whether it really returns false, this can be extended to performAction, where an exception needs to be thrown in that case. The goal of my idea is to generate those tests, by indicating (through GUI of IDE hopefully) that you want to generate tests based on a specific branch. The implementation by example User clicks on "Generate code for branch if (handCardIndex >= hand.getCapacity())". Now the tool needs to find a case where that holds. (I haven't added the relevant code as that may clutter the post ultimately) To invalidate the branch, the tool needs to find a handCardIndex and hand.getCapacity() such that the condition >= holds. It needs to construct a Player with a Hand that has a capacity of at least 1. It notices that the capacity private int of Hand needs to be at least 1. It searches for ways to set it to 1. Fortunately it finds a constructor that takes the capacity as an argument. It uses 1 for this. Some more work needs to be done to succesfully construct a Player instance, involving the creation of objects that have constraints that can be seen by inspecting the source code. It has found the hand with the least capacity possible and is able to construct it. Now to invalidate the test it will need to set handCardIndex = 1. It constructs the test and asserts it to be false (the returned value of the branch) What does the tool need to work? In order to function properly, it will need the ability to scan through all source code (including JDK code) to figure out all constraints. Optionally this could be done through the javadoc, but that is not always used to indicate all constraints. It could also do some trial and error, but it pretty much stops if you cannot attach source code to compiled classes. Then it needs some basic knowledge of what the primitive types are, including arrays. And it needs to be able to construct some form of "modification trees". The tool knows that it needs to change a certain variable to a different value in order to get the correct testcase. Hence it will need to list all possible ways to change it, without using reflection obviously. What this tool will not replace is the need to create tailored unit tests that tests all kinds of conditions when a certain method actually works. It is purely to be used to test methods when they invalidate constraints. My questions: Is creating such a tool feasible? Would it ever work, or are there some obvious problems? Would such a tool be useful? Is it even useful to automatically generate these testcases at all? Could it be extended to do even more useful things? Does, by chance, such a project already exist and would I be reinventing the wheel? If not proven useful, but still possible to make such thing, I will still consider it for fun. If it's considered useful, then I might make an open source project for it depending on the time. For people searching more background information about the used Player and Hand classes in my example, please refer to this repository. At the time of writing the PutMonsterOnFieldAction has not been uploaded to the repo yet, but this will be done once I'm done with the unit tests.

• How to get output from upstart jobs when logged in via SSH?

  Hi, at the moment, I am trying to learn upstart and can't get around a basic problem. To monitor what my job definitions are doing, I would like to see text output from the jobs. That does not seem to be possible when I am logged on via SSH. Currently, I am having this problem with Natty 11.04, but I am convinced that it is a more common one. Probably I just don't know about some important, yet very basic, fact. A simple job file I use (filename /etc/init/test.conf): description "test" start on test console owner kill timeout 5 task script /bin/echo Gotcha... end script My goal is to see the text "Gotcha..." when doing "initctl emit test" or "initctl start test". But that does not work. What I have tried so far: "console output" instead of "console owner" "exec /bin/echo Gotcha..." instead of script...end script I am grateful for any advice.   I have a rather large collection of classes which check and mutate a given data structure. They can be composed via the composition pattern into arbitrarily complex tree-like structures. The final product contains a lot of these composed structures. My question is now: How can I test those? Albeit it is easy to test every single unit of these compositions, it is rather expensive to test the whole compositions in the following sense: Testing the correct layout of the composition-tree results in a huge number of test cases Changes in the compositions result in a very laborious review of every single test case What is the general guideline here?

• XSLT big integer (int64) handling msxml

• Cannot Start Nginx Compiled from Source

  I am trying to compile Nginx from source based on the original compiled Nginx server running on my DigitalOcean server ( Ubuntu-14.04 64x ) but with a few extra modules. I can get everything installed smoothly but I can not get it to start. I am sure the ini is correct because I copied the original source off the current running Nginx server [ Even though I see that Nginx now adds the ini when compiling fron source ]. Also with nginx -V and its not installed??? I reboot the system too and still nothing. So I am not sure what is wrong here. The ini was copied over from the old server along with all the other config files after deleting the old files. When I opened the new compiled files, the nginx default data was present so I replaced them with my old original data prior to starting the new server for the first time. Also to be safe, I rm /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/default and symlinked with ln -s /etc/nginx/sites-available/default /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/default with no errors and I verified that the data was in the sites-enabled/default file. I don't think the server really/fully installed because of the nginx -V result: The program 'nginx' can be found in the following packages: * nginx-core * nginx-extras * nginx-full * nginx-light * nginx-naxsi Try: apt-get install <selected package> Do/should I apt-get install nginx-1.7.4 ?? Or what package do I use being that its a custom package and make install earlier did nothing?? • using own mail server with external domain and dns. Now have internal dns. dkim test not working

  I am not very knowledgeable in this area, but have been able to make great head way. Now i am stuck I setup my own mail server, e.g mailbox.example.com. I had the domain dns point to my mail server in my office. i was able to set up everything working fine. such as dkim and spf records. Recently i decided to setup an internal dns server in the office so as to resolve some addresses for some development servers internally. Ok the problem now is my mail server is sitting on the internal dns server (the mail server is on the same box as the dns server) its still able to send and receive emails but not sure if dkim is working properly. when i try to do a dkim test "amavisd test keys" i get "invalid (public key: not available)" and i know that that means i have a dns issue. so what should i do? I am currently looking at my internal dns zonefile and i dont know what to do (i am using bind dns server on an ubuntu-server box). do i configure a dkim txt record on the local dns ? or is there a way to forward dkim "request" to the external dns ? or do i have this whole thing done wrong ? • What is the most effective way to test for combined keyboard arrow direction in ActionScript 3.0?

  I need to monitor the direction a user is indicating using the four directional arrow keys on a keyboard in ActionScript 3.0 and I want to know the most efficient and effective way to do this. I've got several ideas of how to do it, and I'm not sure which would be best. I've found that when tracking Keyboard.KEY_DOWN events, the event repeats as long as the key is down, so the event function is repeated as well. This broke the method I had originally chosen to use, and the methods I've been able to think of require a lot of comparison operators. The best way I've been able to think of would be to use bitwise operators on a uint variable. Here's what I'm thinking var _direction:uint = 0x0; // The Current Direction That's the current direction variable. In the Keyboard.KEY_DOWN event handler I'll have it check what key is down, and use a bitwise AND operation to see if it's already toggled on, and if it's not, I'll add it in using basic addition. So, up would be 0x1 and down would be 0x2 and both up and down would be 0x3, for example. It would look something like this: private function keyDownHandler(e:KeyboardEvent):void { switch(e.keyCode) { case Keyboard.UP: if(!(_direction & 0x1)) _direction += 0x1; break; case Keyboard.DOWN: if(!(_direction & 0x2)) _direction += 0x2; break; // And So On... } } The keyUpHandler wouldn't need the if operation since it only triggers once when the key goes up, instead of repeating. I'll be able to test the current direction by using a switch statement labeled with numbers from 0 to 15 for the sixteen possible combinations. • Still failing a function, not sure why...ideas on test cases to run?

  I've been trying to get this Sudoku game working, and I am still failing some of the individual functions. All together the game works, but when I run it through an "autograder", some test cases fail.. Currently I am stuck on the following function, placeValue, failing. I do have the output that I get vs. what the correct one should be, but am confused..what is something going on? EDIT: I do not know what input/calls they make to the function. What happens is that "invalid row" is outputted after every placeValue call, and I can't trace why.. • UAC being turned off once a day on Windows 7

  I have strange problem on my HP laptop. This began to happen recently. Whenever I start my machine, Windows 7 Action Center displays the following warning: You need to restart your computer for UAC to be turned off. Actually, this does not happen if it happened once on a specific day. For example, when I start the machine in the morning, it shows up; but it never shows up in the subsequent restarts within that day. On the next day, the same thing happens again. I never disable UAC, but obviously some rootkit or virus causes this. As soon as I get this warning, I head for the UAC settings, and re-enable UAC to dismiss this warning. This is a bothersome situation as I can't fix it. First, I have run a full scan on the computer for any probable virus and malware/rootkit activity, but TrendMicro OfficeScan said that no viruses have been found. I went to an old Restore Point using Windows System Restore, but the problem was not solved. I have carefully examined all entries in the Event Viewer, but there's nothing wrong. Now I know that there is a hidden trojan (rootkit) on my machine which seems to disguise itself quite successfully. Note that I don't have the chance to remove the HDD, or reinstall the OS as this is a work machine subjected to certain IT policies on a company domain. Despite all my attempts, the problem still remains. I strictly need a to-the-point method or a pukka rootkit remover to remove whatever it is. I don't want to monkey with the system settings, i.e. disabling auto runs one by one, messing the registry, etc. EDIT 2: I have found an article which is closely related to my trouble: Malware can turn off UAC in Windows 7; “By design” says Microsoft.   Hi, i am trying to create a Unit test for a WinForm in a Visual Studio 2010 project. I add a new "Coded UI Test" to my project, open up the code file, then right click and select "Generate Code for Coded UI Test" - "Use Coded UI Test builder". I then start my application up, select "Record" on the UI Map control. I run my tests (in this case simply select a textbox, type in a random value, them click a button). I then select "Generate Code" from the UI Map control which generates the code which the test will use. When running this test, i get the error: Test method HelloWorldTest.CodedUITest1.CodedUITestMethod1 threw exception: Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UITest.Extension.UITestControlNotFoundException: The playback failed to find the control with the given search properties. Additional Details: TechnologyName: 'MSAA' ControlType: 'Window' Name: 'Form1' ClassName: 'WindowsForms10.Window' --- System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException: Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component.   I've been trying to construct a ruby regex which matches trailing spaces - but not indentation placeholders - so I can gsub them out. I had this /\b[\t ]+$/ and it was working a treat until I realised it only works when the line ends are [a-zA-Z]. :-( So I evolved it into this /(?!^[\t ]+)[\t ]+$/ and it seems like it's getting better, but it still doesn't work properly. I've spent hours trying to get this to work to no avail. Please help. Here's some text test so it's easy to throw into Rubular, but the indent lines are getting stripped so it'll need a few spaces and/or tabs. Once lines 3 & 4 have spaces back in, it shouldn't match on lines 3-5, 7, 9. some test test some test test some other test (text) some other test (text) likely here{ dfdf } likely here{ dfdf } and this ; and this ; Alternatively, is there an simpler / more elegant way to do this?

  I have built an MVC php application and was wondering, if instead of having to write out a large amount of html and set the data, could I not just have all this html (with some php) in a separate file and just require it? For example: $test = '<div> Test content <div>More content</div> </div>'; $APP->Template->setData('test', $test, FALSE); Instead could I not just use: $test = require("includes/content.php"); $APP->Template->setData('test', $test, FALSE); Would this be considered as bad practise? It just seems that by requiring files, it can shorten the length of controllers. Would be good to get anybodies advice on this matter.
