• Unknown CSS font-family oddity with IE7-10 on Win Vista-8

  I am seeing the following "oddity" with IE7-10 on Win Vista-8: When declaring font-family: serif; I am seeing an old bitmapped serif font that I can't identify (see screenshot below) instead of the expected font Times New Roman. I know it's an old bitmapped font because it displays aliased, without any font smoothing, with IE7-10 on Win Vista-8 (just like Courier on every version of Win). Screenshot: I would like to know (1) can anyone else confirm my research and (2) BONUS: which font is IE displaying? Notes: IE6 and IE7 on Win XP displays Times New Roman, as they should. It doesn't matter if font-family: serif; is declared in an external stylesheet or inline on the element. Quoting the CSS attribute makes no difference. Adding "Unkown Font" to the stack also makes no difference. New Screenshot: The answer from Jukka below is correct. Here is a new screenshot with Batang (not BatangChe) to illustrate. • Metro: Dynamically Switching Templates with a WinJS ListView

  Imagine that you want to display a list of products using the WinJS ListView control. Imagine, furthermore, that you want to use different templates to display different products. In particular, when a product is on sale, you want to display the product using a special “On Sale” template. In this blog entry, I explain how you can switch templates dynamically when displaying items with a ListView control. In other words, you learn how to use more than one template when displaying items with a ListView control. Creating the Data Source Let’s start by creating the data source for the ListView. Nothing special here – our data source is a list of products. Two of the products, Oranges and Apples, are on sale. Declaring the Templates and ListView Control Next, we need to declare the ListView control and the two Template controls which we will use to display template items. The first template is used when rendering a normal product and the second template is used when rendering a product which is on sale. The second template, unlike the first template, includes the text “(On Sale!)”. The ListView control is bound to the data source which we created in the previous section. The ListView itemDataSource property is set to the value ListViewDemos.products.dataSource. Notice that we do not set the ListView itemTemplate property. We set this property in the default.js file. Switching Between Templates All of the magic happens in the default.js file. The default.js file contains the JavaScript code used to switch templates dynamically. Depending on the value of the product onSale property, the DOM element is generated from either the productItemTemplate or the productOnSaleTemplate template. Using Binding Converters instead of Multiple Templates In the previous sections, I explained how you can use different templates to render normal products and on sale products. There is an alternative approach to displaying different markup for normal products and on sale products. Instead of creating two templates, you can create a single template which contains separate DIV elements for a normal product and an on sale product. These data-win-bind attributes are used to show the “normal” template when a product is not on sale and show the “on sale” template when a product is on sale. These attributes set the Cascading Style Sheet display attribute to either “none” or “block”. The data-win-bind attributes take advantage of binding converters. The ListViewDemos.displayOnSaleProduct binding converter does the opposite; it converts the value true or false to the value “block” or “none” (Sadly, you cannot simply place a NOT operator before the onSale property in the binding expression – you need to create both converters). The end result is that you can display different markup depending on the value of the product onSale property. Either the contents of the first or second DIV element are displayed: Summary In this blog entry, I’ve explored two approaches to displaying different markup in a ListView depending on the value of a data item property. The bulk of this blog entry was devoted to explaining how you can assign a function to the ListView itemTemplate property which returns different templates. We created both a productItemTemplate and productOnSaleTemplate and displayed both templates with the same ListView control. We also discussed how you can create a single template and display different markup by using binding converters. The binding converters are used to set a DIV element’s display property to either “none” or “block”. We created a binding converter which displays normal products and a binding converter which displays “on sale” products.

• Installation taking a very long time, hangs at "Configuring bcmwl-kernel-source"

  I am installing Ubuntu 14.04(32-bit) on my laptop (Compaq Presario V2000), and after about 7 hours, it is still in Configuring bcmwl-kernel-source (i386) mode. The messages I read are as follows: ubuntu kernel: [22814.858163] ACPI: \_SB_.PCI0.LPC0.LPC0.ACAD: ACPI_NOTIFY_BUS_CHECK event: unsupported with the numbers in the square brackets increasing. I have had Windows XP professional on this laptop, and I am erasing it. I am not sure if I should turn off the laptop, and start all over again. About 4 years ago I installed Ubuntu on this laptop, and that was very fast. The only problem I encountered was my wireless, and could not make it to work, and switched back to Windows. I appreciate any comments regarding this installation taking such a long time. After 40 hours the installation was still in configuring mode with the following messages: ubuntu CRON[29329]: (root) CMD ( cd/ && run-part .. report /etc/cron-hourly) I did the following to check for errors: pressed ctrl-alt-f2. This time the system froze. I had no other choice but to turn off the laptop, and start all over again. The exact model of the laptop is "Compaq Presario V2069CL Notebook PC" with AMD processor.

• Improve speed of "start menu" in Linux Mint 10 - Ubuntu 10.10 derivative [closed]

  I have a global menu (including application, administration and system tabs) that is taking too much time (for me) to load (about 2.5 seconds). Of course, this time is taken only during first start. After it have loaded, next times are better ( less than 0.2 miliseconds) The menu was taking more time before (about 5 seconds), and I found that was because of the 'Other' part of the menu, that included many applications installed with Wine, so I removed all of them (I didn't need them at all). I have a "normal" knowledge of programming, and I think that the process of starting the menu for the first time has some kind of "cache function", that tries to find which apps are present that need to be placed under menu to be shown to user. But didn't found this function so that I could analyze in details what he is doing (if searching for files under "~/.local/share/applications" or anything else). Also, I found that hitting "Alt-F2" also fires this "cache function", because after waiting it to load, the process of opening the menu took less than 0.2 miliseconds. So, could anyone help me in order to reduce this time? I found on internet that some user could reduce the time by resizing the icons of applications. But found here that most of my icons are already at 25x25 size. Any other idead? Maybe a multiprocess to load it, or include it under startup... don't know. Ps: Sorry if this is an awkward question, but I just do not like waiting for things to happen, and think that this process should be smoother than it's now. Also, thanks in advance!

  There are bits and pieces of information all over the place but I'm trying to put it all together so that GoogleCL finally accesses more than the initial 7 services. Does anyone know of a step-by-step? Right now any attempt outside these result in the error message: google tasks list Did you specify the service correctly? Must be one of 'picasa', 'blogger', 'youtube', 'docs', 'contacts', 'calendar', 'finance' I installed GoogleCL from the Ubuntu repos, authenticated a few bundled services like contacts, docs etc. and those work great, giving me access to do certain operations like upload from the command line. • Fixing Chrome&rsquo;s AJAX Request Caching Bug

  I recently had to make a set of web pages restore their state when the user arrived on them after clicking the browser’s back button. The pages in question had various content loaded in response to user actions, which meant I had to manually get them back into a valid state after the page loaded. I got hold of the page’s data in a JavaScript ViewModel using a JQuery ajax call, then iterated over the properties, filling in the fields as I went. I built in the ability to describe dependencies between inputs to make sure fields were filled in in the correct order and at the correct time, and that all worked nicely. To make sure the browser didn’t cache the AJAX call results I used the JQuery’s cache: false option, and ASP.NET MVC’s OutputCache attribute for good measure. That all worked perfectly… except in Chrome. Chrome insisted on retrieving the data from its cache. cache: false adds a random query string parameter to make the browser think it’s a unique request – it made no difference. I made the AJAX call a POST – it made no difference. Eventually what I had to do was add a random token to the URL (not the query string) and use MVC routing to deliver the request to the correct action. The project had a single Controller for all AJAX requests, so this route: routes.MapRoute( name: "NonCachedAjaxActions", url: "AjaxCalls/{cacheDisablingToken}/{action}", defaults: new { controller = "AjaxCalls" }, constraints: new { cacheDisablingToken = "[0-9]+" }); …and this amendment to the ajax call: function loadPageData(url) { // Insert a timestamp before the URL's action segment: var indexOfFinalUrlSeparator = url.lastIndexOf("/"); var uniqueUrl = url.substring(0, indexOfFinalUrlSeparator) + new Date().getTime() + "/" + url.substring(indexOfFinalUrlSeparator); // Call the now-unique action URL: $.ajax(uniqueUrl, { cache: false, success: completePageDataLoad }); } …did the trick.

• How to add locale aware CSS to an individual component in ADF Faces.

  When creating a skin in ADF Faces, it's (relatively) easy to add locale aware CSS using the :rtl psuedo-class on the end of a skinning key.  Example:af|inputListOfValues::content {  padding-left: 3px;}af|inputListOfValues::content:rtl {  padding-left: 0px;  padding-right: 3px;}In this example, we want some padding before the start of the text in the content element of the component.  In right to left locales, the start of the text is on the right side by default, so we need to change the padding from the left to the right.Let's say, however, that you want to specify a locale aware CSS style on an individual component using the contentStyle attribute.  There is a handy ADF Faces EL function to help you out here: isRTL.  For our example, let's say we want an inputText component whose text content is 'end' aligned.  If you weren't considering RTL locales, you could code this as:<af:inputText id="idInputTextRight" label="right aligned" value="Test"                    contentStyle="text-align: right;"/>This, however, will be right aligned regardless of locale. This is where isRTL() comes to the rescue.  This is how we would code this to be locale aware:<af:inputText id="idInputTextEnd" label="end aligned" value="Test"                     contentStyle="text-align: #{af:isRTL()?'left':'right'};"/> The af:isRTL() EL function returns true if we are rendering in RTL, so we can use it to pick the appropriate text alignment.

• Windows being placed on wrong monitor

  I'm running a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04x64 (ATI Radeon HD4770 with open source drivers) and I am having trouble getting windows to appear on the right screen. Yesterday I plugged in my secondary monitor and it worked perfectly out of the box, except that for some reason, compiz wants to place windows on the secondary monitor rather than the first. This is a problem because I don't use the secondary monitor 100% of the time, and I don't want windows being placed on it when it is off. Also, it's only some windows that are getting placed there. For example, the "Edit Connections" window from the networking menu is always placed off my primary screen. There are a number of other windows that do the same. While some, like nautilus, always appear on the proper monitor. I played around with Compiz Config Settings Manager and found that if I disable the "Place Windows" plugin, all of the windows appear on the proper monitor -- except that they are placed underneath the Unity Panel, so I have to alt-drag them out each time in order to use them. With out without that plugin, I can't seem to get a sensible setup. The windows are supposed to appear only on the active display, but for some reason Compiz doesn't want to do that with some windows. Does anyone know a fix for this? I'd rather not have to disable and re-enable my monitor every single time I use it...

• How to set Guake as preferred terminal emulator for "Run in Terminal"?

  I've recently installed Guake and like it a lot. I'd like to set it as my preferred terminal application. That is, when I right-click on a bash script file, click "Open", and choose "Run in Terminal", I want it to open in a new Guake tab. I'm not sure where to set Guake as the preferred app for "Run in Terminal". And I'm guessing that I might need the command to be something like guake --new-tab=new --execute-command="COMMANDHERE", so how do I pass that parameter? Ideally, I'd like a terminal invocation to open a new Guake tab, unless there is already one available. (Difficult to tell, what id there's already a command running in the existing tab?) Failing that, just opening a new Guake tab is ok. Also, is there an option to keep Guake hidden when this happens? Already tried: Based on How can I set default terminal used? I have already tried: gconftool --type string --set /desktop/gnome/applications/terminal/exec guake - this made Guake appear when I type Ctrl-Alt-T. setting x-terminal-emulator to \usr\bin\guake in Alternatives Configurator - this made no difference (having already made the previous change).

• Start Debugging in Visual Studio

  Every developer is familiar with hitting F5 and debugging their application, which starts their app with the Visual Studio debugger attached from the start (instead of attaching later). This is one way to achieve step 1 of the Live Debugging process. Hitting F5, F11, Ctrl+F10 and the other ways to start the process under the debugger is covered in this MSDN "How To". The way you configure the debugging experience, before you hit F5, is by selecting the "Project" and then the "Properties" menu (Alt+F7 on my keyboard bindings). Dependent on your project type there are different options, but if you browse to the Debug (or Debugging) node in the properties page you'll have a way to select local or remote machine debugging, what debug engines to use, command line arguments to use during debugging etc. Currently the .NET and C++ project systems are different, but one would hope that one day they would be unified to use the same mechanism and UI (I don't work on that product team so I have no knowledge of whether that is a goal or if it will ever happen). Personally I like the C++ one better, here is what it looks like (and it is described on this MSDN page): If you were following along in the "Attach to Process" blog post, the equivalent to the "Select Code Type" dialog is the "Debugger Type" dropdown: that is how you change the debug engine. Some of the debugger properties options appear on the standard toolbar in VS. With Visual Studio 11, the Debug Type option has been added to the toolbar If you don't see that in your installation, customize the toolbar to show it - VS 11 tends to be conservative in what you see by default, especially for the non-C++ Visual Studio profiles. • Screen lock broken when using separate x screens

  For some reason, the screen lock appears to be broken when I use separate x screens (it works fine if I use twin view or just one monitor, though). If I wait for the screen to lock (or if I tell it to lock), it fades to black, showing only the mouse cursor. However, when I move the mouse to bring up the password prompt, nothing happens, the screens remain completely blank. Furthermore, it would appear that the screen lock never activated in the first place, for two reasons: one, if I blindly enter my password and press enter, nothing happens; and two, if I press ctrl+alt+delete and then enter it logs me out (which shouldn't happen if the password prompt is there, right), losing any progress I have on any of the open programs (meaning, not a very friendly option for a programmer ;) ). So yeah, does anyone know why this is happening, and how to fix it? Thanks! Notes: I am using Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit. I am using gnome-classic, but the same problem occurs when I use unity. I do not have xscreensaver, nor do I have any screen savers running (except, I guess for the default blank one).

• Metro: Dynamically Switching Templates with a WinJS ListView

  Imagine that you want to display a list of products using the WinJS ListView control. Imagine, furthermore, that you want to use different templates to display different products. In particular, when a product is on sale, you want to display the product using a special “On Sale” template. In this blog entry, I explain how you can switch templates dynamically when displaying items with a ListView control. In other words, you learn how to use more than one template when displaying items with a ListView control. Creating the Data Source Let’s start by creating the data source for the ListView. Nothing special here – our data source is a list of products. Two of the products, Oranges and Apples, are on sale. These attributes set the Cascading Style Sheet display attribute to either “none” or “block”. The data-win-bind attributes take advantage of binding converters. The ListViewDemos.displayOnSaleProduct binding converter does the opposite; it converts the value true or false to the value “block” or “none” (Sadly, you cannot simply place a NOT operator before the onSale property in the binding expression – you need to create both converters). The end result is that you can display different markup depending on the value of the product onSale property. Either the contents of the first or second DIV element are displayed: Summary In this blog entry, I’ve explored two approaches to displaying different markup in a ListView depending on the value of a data item property. The bulk of this blog entry was devoted to explaining how you can assign a function to the ListView itemTemplate property which returns different templates. We created both a productItemTemplate and productOnSaleTemplate and displayed both templates with the same ListView control. We also discussed how you can create a single template and display different markup by using binding converters. The binding converters are used to set a DIV element’s display property to either “none” or “block”. We created a binding converter which displays normal products and a binding converter which displays “on sale” products.
