• How to figure out disks performance in Xen?

  So, I have a Dell R710 with PERC 6/i Integrated and 6 450Gb Seagate 15k SAS disks in RAID10, I have 30 Xen vps working on it. Now I need to deploy second server with same hardware for same tasks and I want to figure out maybe it's a good idea to use RAID5 instead of RAID10 because we have a lot of "free" memory on first server and not so much "free space". How do I find out disks performance on first server and find out could I move it to RAID5 without slowing down of whole system?

  If someone knows a software with these features: Works from the tray area Very lightweight Works also in Windows XP (preferably workstation, nothing serverish required) Can show a bandwidth usage graph, where I can easily see each PC's usage I can inspect a computer's connections, find out the ports and applications that are using them (eg, all bandwidth is consumed by PC #3, that's running uTorrent.exe from port 33003) ...I'd happily check it out. I'm only sharing my connection with (at most) 4 computers, I'd prefer not having to add hardware or reinstall my system. Thanks in advance!

• How can I find which drivers are the correct ones for my machine?

  I'm currently installing Windows 7 onto a new laptop before imaging it to deploy. I need to install the Wireless and Graphics drivers, but the HP site is offering me both ATI and Intel graphics drivers (at 102MB and 470(!)MB) a pop, as well as Intel, Broadcomm, RealTek and Atheros wireless drivers. Is there a bit of software that will tell me what devices are in the machine so I don't have to go through, trial-and-error and find which is the right driver for the hardware?

  Do you know a Windows 7 software (not an online service) than can create an RSS feed for any webpage ? Here is what I am looking for : I manually select what is a title, what is a link and if needed what is the content that I would like to keep (article content + their related images if they exist). The software create a RSS feed from that. Then it monitors the feed every x hours (or x days at a specified time). If updates are found then send the results to my email address. (It is a little like a combination of the Firefox addon: Autopager (WYSIWYG selection which use xpath) and WebSite-Watcher (RSS software monitoring).

• Safari 4 starting up slowly on a Vista machine

  I have two PCs (different specs) with the latest Windows Vista and Safari 4 updates installed. In one machine, Safari 4 works great but in the other, it starts up slowly (less than a minute though) with harddisk sound indicating data access activities. I have cleared all internet caches and I am quite sure that there is no virus in both machines. Are there any other reasons that Safari performances are so different in comparably similar software and hardware environments?

• Make a mosaic picture out of 900 images

  I have ~ 900 pictures (mostly photos) of varying sizes. Now I want to create one big picture that includes all 900 pictures in a small thumbnail-like resolution. The tool should automatically resize the thumnails so that everything fits. All pictures should be added next to each other, so there should be no border/padding. Each picture should be included exactly one time! (however, it would be okay to omit a few so that there is no empty space) I'm looking for a tool (FLOSS, for GNU/Linux) that can do the job. I tried Metapixel, but it needs an input image that should be "resembled" by the thumbnails, and it only uses a selection of all pictures. I found montage, but couldn't get a result yet, because my system was unresponsible for hours after starting it. Maybe there are some tweaks? AndreaMosaic is recommended in this answer, but it's not FLOSS (and needs Wine to run it on GNU/Linux).

• WPF & RenderTierCapability, what could cause a machine to be dropped from Tier 2 to 0?

  I'm having an issue on some imaged machines where they will started out on Tier 2 and after some time of use (they are well spec'd kiosk machines, quad-core, Nvidia 550Ti), they drop to Tier 0 and effectively become useless. Restarting the machine doesn't seem to help. This is a problem more than just "missing hardware acceleration" because my application requires D3DImage to function (which requires Tier 2). Thanks for any help!

• selecting files in windows-7 explorer just by hovering

  One of the biggest annoyances for me of Windows 7 vs Windows XP is that you cant select files properly by hovering over them on Windows Explorer (or multi select by holding ctrl). When i hover an item it gets light blue, not selected. Only after a time or after more hovering, it gets selected. I set the delay (MouseHoverTime) to 1. Windows seems to avoid wrong selection by requiring an additional time or space of mouse hovering before actually selecting the item. I tried playing with the values MouseHoverHeight, MouseHoverWidth, MouseSensitivity, MouseThreshold1 and MouseThreshold2 in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse, but they seem to have no effect over this. (they are currently on (20, 20, 16, 6, 10, respectively). What i want: to immediately select an item whenever the mouse gets over its bounds.

  Basically, we have one external IP address, several servers internally and want to redirect to each internal server based on request URL. We do not want to install another piece of hardware to do this for us but we have a firewall running Linux that currently forwards to only one of the internal servers.   For better compatibility and performance in games I'm thinking about installing Windows additionally to Linux. I have security concerns about this, though. Note: "Windows" in the remaining text includes not only the OS but also any software running on it. Regardless of whether it comes included or is additionally installed, whether it is started intentionally or unintentionally (virus, malware). Is there an easy way to achieve the following requirements: Windows MUST NOT be able to kill my linux partition or my data disk neither single files (virus infection) nor overwriting the whole disk Windows MUST NOT be able to read data disk (- extra protection against spyware) Linux may or may not have access to the windows partition both Linux and Windows should have full access to the graphics card this rules out desktop VM solutions for gaming I want the manufacturer's windows graphics card driver Regarding Windows to be unable to destroy my linux install: this is not just the usual paranoia, that has happened to me in the past. So I don't accept "no ext4 driver" as an argument. Once bitten, twice shy. And even if destruction targeted at specific (linux) files is nearly impossible, there should be no way to shred the whole partition. I may accept the risk of malware breaking out of a barrier (e.g. VM) around the whole windows box, though. Currently I have a system disk (SSD) and a data disk (HDD), both SATA. I expect I have to add another disk. If i don't: even better. My CPU is a Intel Core i5, with VT-x and VT-d available, though untested. Ideas I've had so far: deactivate or hide other HDs until reboot at low level possible? can the boot loader (grub) do this for me? tiny VM layer: load windows in a VM that provides access to almost all hardware, except the HDs any ready made software solution for this? Preferably free. as I said: the main problem seems to be to provide full access to the graphics card hardware switch to cut power to disks commercial products expensive and lots of warnings against cheap home built solutions preferably all three hard disks with one switch (one push) mobile racks - won't wear of daily swapping be a problem?

  Background In Excel 2010, for some ridiculous reason, there is no built-in hotkey (or even a button on the toolbar) for subscripting/superscripting text within a text cell. You can, however, highlight the text, right-click the selection, click format, and then check the [x] subscript or [x] superscript checkbox. Question Are there any kinds of excel macros or workarounds to map two keyboard hotkeys to the subscript and superscript keys, respectively? (It should only be, like, two lines of code - one for the event handler and one for the actual procedure call... I would write one myself but my VBA is rusty, at best, and I am pretty confident there is probably already some kind of solution, despite my inability to find one via search engine) Thanks for any help you can provide!

• How to fix winlogon.exe randomly crashing/hanging my computer?

  I've got these problems: 1) sometimes winlogon.exe crashes at boot-up and my whole computer shuts off once i click "no" to visual-studio-2008 just-in-time-debugger window, takes about 30 secs until my harddrives starts up again, its really scary, i am afraid it is causing hardware malfunctions in long term. this has happened dozen of time now. 2) sometimes i leave the computer alone a while, i come back and i notice ctrl+alt+del doesnt work and winlogon.exe is using 100% of one of my 4 cores.

• Photoshop: Trim a photo so it contains no transparent pixels?

  In Photoshop, I've put together some panorama photos using the Photomerge tool and the resulting image contains a lot of transparent pixels. Also, because it's put together of multiple photos the alignment can be off. What I'd like to do is cut the image down to the largest box which contains no transparent pixels at all. It's similar to the Trim tool, but this would remove a number of non-transparent pixels. Is there anything like this? Basically something which would automatically crop the above image to the selection box there: a rectangle with no transparent pixels.

This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. • How to work with bookmarks in Word without naming them?

  I am working in a large Word 2007 document and need bookmarks to remember editing positions. I know I can manage bookmarks with shift+ctrl+F5 but that's cumbersome because I am used to do this a lot faster in the Delphi editor. There I create a bookmark with ctrl+shift+0..9 and jump to the bookmark with ctrl+0..9. In this way I have 10 quick bookmarks. I do not have to name them, I do not have to pick them from a dialog (because there is not even a dialog prompting me for a selection). Is something similar possible in Word, or has anybody made a macro for that purpose? Thanks.
