• Is it good to use JQuery's validation plugin?

  Hi all, I am learning JQuery, and I have checked out that JQUery has got a validation plugin. http://docs.jquery.com/Plugins/Validation#Validate_forms_like_you.27ve_never_been_validating_before.21 To use it, users have to include another script file in the Head tag in HTML. I am thinking if this will cause any code collisions to the codes in the validation plugin when more and more javascript files are included. Should I use JQuery to write myself new customed functions for checking data input from users or use the JQuery data validation plugin? Please advise.

  I am trying to add a spinner function in a trial app which compares the frequency charts of earphones. I am trying to extract the info from " http://www.headphone.com/learning-center/build-a-graph.php " website. what I want to do is make the spinner work like the drop down list in the mentioned website. On further inspection what I found was that every dropdown element is provided with a unique code that is called when the particular element is selected. I need help in replicating the same in an android spinner.

• Does the Internet make us less good programmers? [closed]

  With all the information and code available nowadays on the Internet has that diminished our capability of remembering or learning stuff just because we know they're available somewhere out there, just a Google away or a StackOverflow question away? For example I find myself visiting php.net quite often to check the syntax of the same functions over and over again, not because my memory sucks, but I don't feel like keeping the information in me, since I know I'll find it again on the net. And about StackOverflow, isn't the process of figuring things out on your own supposed to improve your programming skills? If the answers are all just clicks away, do we actually learn something or just keep a pointer in our heads where to search for it again when we need it? Your thoughts are welcome. Hope it doesn't shut down as subjective or anything, the answers would be really interesting ;)

• Can I use WCF in this case?

  We have a third party application that provied its web services to us by ASMX and it is created at the time of .NET 1.1 in the old days we were using VB 6.0 and connected to it by a PocketSOAP, etc... bt now we want to replace the VB 6.0 with C# 3.5 WinApps and still use that third party web services. so I wish to know what are my options for doing this? which one do you recommend and which one has a faster learning curve?   Hello there, please advice me how to organize product catalog site with such structure (this is pages which should be in site map): - Home page - About Us -- Team -- Contacts - Products -- Category --- Product ---- Overview ---- Photo gallery ---- Variants -- Category --- Subcategory --- Product ---- Overview ---- Photo gallery ---- Variants I know that i can use Page nodes for general pages like About page. And i can prepare Product node with CCK with needed fields. Then i can use taxonomy vocabulary for product categories/subcategories. Is this a right way to do such functionality? Or better to use just child/parent nodes? And how i can show subpages menu on product page? How i can organize menus? I need one menu with primary links, second menu below it, for secondary links (except Products catalog) and sidebar menu for Products catalog. Please advice. May be this is easy questions, but i just learning Drupal (but i have experience with other CMS). Thanks a lot.

  Hello i am new to rails. I am learning rails 2.3.5 and checked rails 3. I found some features added in rails 3. thats perfectly fine. But i found something different. in 2.3.5 we use ruby script/server to start the server and in rails 3 we use rails server and there are some other changes like this.   A guy came to me there recently with a half done web app that has been created using VB.NET, nothing major, just a normal site. His original programmer couldn't continue so he wants me to finish it. Problem is I don't program using VB.NET nor have I any intention of learning it for a project this small. Usually I would run from something like this but I need the cash. Should I take the project and continue it using C# or just leave it. Has anyone had a similar experience and how did it turn out.

• Should we or should we not check in the classes folder in WEB-INF directory into SVN?

  I use SVN, and am learning how to use it along with eclipse IDE. The first time I add classes to my package, there is no problem, the generated class files get into SVN smoothly. The moment I edit them, I get this message - "WEB-INF/classes" is obstructed. I try the "clean-up" command and the clean up command says "WEB-INF/classes" folder is locked. I use TortoiseSVN as my SVN client. I know why this is happening. It probably because the Eclipse overwrites all the files while generating classes and then causes this - Is it inappropriate to commit the class files into SVN? If not, what should I do to commit these class files smoothly?

  My fried suggest I try to apply for a job at EMBL. I'm not bioinformatic in any way, but my friend (who by the way is a biologist working at EMBL) insists that I could adapt to the new environment as long as I have a interest in subject and am generally good at learning new things. But here is a catch. For the last 4 years I've been working with .Net and other Microsoft technologies which I enjoy even more lately. Now, from googling I couldn't find whether it will be possible for me to stick with .Net because it was all perl, java, linux and so on. Is there anybody who could prove whether there is at least minor opportunity for a .Net developer to at least partly develop with C#?

• Spring 3, Java EE 6

  I'm learning Java EE 6. I've seen how much progress it has achieved in this release of the umbrella specification. EJBs 3.1 are far easier and more lightweight than previous versions, and CDI is amazing. I'm not familiar with Spring, but I often read that it offered some neat features that the Java EE stack didn't. Yet I also read now that JEE has caught up, and can now fully compete with Spring. I know that choosing from both depends on many factors, but if we only focus on features, say the latest trends etc. Which one has the leading edge?. Can Spring 3 offer some assets The JAVA EE 6 stack can't? Also, what about Seam framework? From what I read it's like java ee 6 but with some additions?

• problem with generating PDF and session_start()

  Hi All, I've been using PDF class produced by R&OS successfully in a number of recent developments. I'd like to use it in a page that performs a database query before generating a PDF (it's basically a summary of the session, so I'm using session_id() as part of the query) All is fine if I run this in Firefox - not fine in IE. I think the loading of session_start() is doing something with headers that's upsetting IE as it appears unable to load the page (comment off session_start and the page loads fine). I'm getting a little concerned as, on further investigation, it appears that R&OS is not supported ... bad newbie learning experience and I really don't want to have to try adopt another class system this late in the day. Have you any thoughts as to what I could try next? Thankx G

• The importance of knowing c++ for web application development

  I'm a php developer and I want to broaden my knowledge base by learning a higher language (java, c#, c++). My specialty is in building web applications (ria etc). I'm trying to think of the appropriate path to take (hedging my bets so to speak) in terms of which language I should be focusing on. I love open source technology but at the same time C# seems to be getting a lot of notoriety. Despite the newer technologies available there still remains c++ which is the staple for many popular vendors including google and facebook (hip hop) in building scalable and robust cross platform apps. Can anyone offer suggestions as to how I should be looking at this. Should I go Java, C# or C++). They all take time to master and I just want to choose a specialty. Thanks

  I'm currently learning about the different modes the Windows operating system runs in (kernel mode vs. user mode), device drivers, their respective advantages and disadvantages and computer security in general. I would like to create a practical example of what a faulty device driver that runs in kernel mode can do to the system, by for example corrupting memory used for critical OS-processes. How can I execute my code in kernel mode instead of user mode, directly? Do I have to write a dummy device driver and install it to do this? Where can I read more about kernel and user mode in Windows? I know the dangers of this and will do all of the experiments on a virtual machine running Windows XP only

  Sorry, this is probably a terrible question. I've JUST started learning python today. I've been reading a Byte of Python. Right now I have a project for Python that involves time. I can't find anything relating to time in Byte of Python, so I'll ask you: How can I run a block for a user specified amount of time and then break? For example (in some pseudo-code): time = int(raw_input('Enter the amount of seconds you want to run this: ')) while there is still time left: #run this block or even better: import sys time = sys.argv[1] while there is still time left: #run this block Thanks for any help. Also, additional online guides and tutorials would be much appreciated. I really like Byte of Python. Dive into Python can't quite hold my attention, though. My question is, how (if at all) can Python compliment the skills of a typical C# developer working mainly with MS technologies on a Windows Platform. Some examples of typical C# dev on windows would be (SOA applications, web applications, windows services, automation, xml handling) Surely there must be some scenarios where knowing Python would help you get certain tasks done quicker or more efficiently than using traditional C# / MS technologies.   I'm trying to port the unix utility ldd to windows, because dependency walker and cygcheck don't quite give me the usage I'm looking for. (also for the learning experience) Ive been looking all over MSDN, for a windows API that lists dll dependencies of an executable, or even the storage format in the complied exe (just to filter it out), but I've been unable to find anything. If anyone knows what API call windows uses for listing modules to load, or what patterns I can search for in an executable to find modules to load, please help me out :) thanks! -note: I'm not looking to profile for dynamic modules, just list the ones that are required at runtime

I'm learning about GNU-Make and I have the following project structure: ~/projects /sysCalls ex1.c ex2.c ex3.c ex4.c ex5.c ex6.c ex7.c Each .c source is very simple, has its own main function and must be built into a corresponding binary (preferably named after its source). But I want to build into a bin directory (added to my .gitignore file). My current Makefile is: CC := gcc CFLAGS := -Wall -g SRC := $(wildcard *.c) TARGET := $(SRC:.c=) all: bin $(TARGET) mv $(TARGET) bin/ bin: mkdir bin clean: rm -fr bin/ It works as expected, but always builds every source. And I don't like moving everything to bin "manually". Any tips or ideas on how this Makefile could be improved?

• Getting back into C/C++ after several years

  While at university I started my first programming with ANSI C, before we moved onto Java later in the course. Now I would like to go back to (re)learning C and C++ again to allow me to contribute with open source projects and also to expand my CV and improve my career prospects. Currently I mostly program in VB.net (I know I know, I try to not do things the nasty way you can with this) and am slowly picking up C# as I get some time at work. I also use a bit of java for Android dev. While I realise just doing it is the best way to learn, my exercise ideas are usually either trivial or beyond my current skills. What are some good sources for this initial relearn, I intend to possibly start helping with Chromium as other people seem to think this a good place to get started in OS. Basically any help getting back into this would be appreciated.
