• On REST: WADL or not IDL, is the following approach right ?

  This question is a bit long, please bear with me. In REST, i think we should not need WADL or any IDL. But rather something that would implicitly cover its concept. The way I think about it is when we (humans) surf the Web, when we go to a web site for the first time, we don't know what services it provides. You discover those on the html home page (or a sitemap page in a help section) or maybe just the main menu on the home page. If you make an analogy, the homepage or site map to us humans is what WSDL is to WS-* or what WADL could be to a REST service. Only that its just like any other html content. I think that in REST the following is a good way to do things, respecting the HATEOS paradigm. Have a top level (or default) resource that lists links to your other resources. For a library example, say RestLibrary.com/ it could be something like: <root xmlns:lib="http://librarystandards.com/libraryml"> <resource class="lib:book"> <link type="application/vnd.libraryml+xml" template="mylib.com/book/{isbn}" /> <link type="application/vnd.libraryml+xml" rel="add" href="mylib.com/book" method="POST" /> <link type="application/vnd.libraryml+xml" rel="update" template="mylib.com/book/{isbn}" method="PUT" /> </resource> <resource class="lib:bookList"> <link template="mylib.com/book?keywords={keywords}" type="application/vnd.openlibrary+xml" rel="search" /> </resource> </root> Note that it is assumed that the media type "application/vnd.libraryml+xml" is a defined standard or (may be just proprietary vocabulary) named libraryml. Also, the client should be able to understand this "homepage" resource (elements root, resource and link). This is the part that could be used instead of WADL : an Abstract vocabulary that should be understandable by any client. You could use an existing standard like Atom for example. But the main idea is to have an abstract vocabulary understandable by any client. Why not WADL then ? well wadl is only for service discovery. The idea here is to have an light abstract vocabulary that would serve as a base for hypermedia. A "root" vocabulary. Like in owl we have owl:thing...etc Now if the client knows the "libraryml" standard it can follow the links to the things it understands (after parsing the media type properties and xmlns). If not, it just won't. When i can't understand how to deal with something in REST architecture i tend to see how we Humans do it in the Web. In the Web, we have the Generic language that is HTML that enables site builders to deliver any specific content, regardless of its meaning to the client (the user), Browsers understand HTML but not the "meaning" of its content. It is the user that understands the (domain specific) content. If i go to say QuantumPhysics.org, my browser can render the home page (it is just html after all) and i can read the home page. If i understand quantum then fine i can continue browsing. If i don't i just get out (unless i want to learn the hardway :) ) In the RetsLibrary.com example the client app is just like me+my browser on QuantumPhysics.org. the media type "application/vnd.libraryml+xml" is quantum physics (knowledge). http is http in both examples. Now HTML of QuantumPhysics.org is in RestLibrary.com is XML + that tiny little abstract vocabulary (root resource and link, that you could replace with something like Atom). So does this approach have any value ? don't we need a root tiny hyper-vocabulary so we can succeed with hypermedia and the "initial URI" concept ? edit Yeah why not RDF as the root vocabulary !

• In WPF, Selecting ItemContainerStyle based on data bound content

  In #WPF you have ItemTemplateSelectors. But, can you also select an ItemContainerStyle based on the datatype of a bound object? I am databinding a scatterview. I want to set some properties of the generated ScatterViewItems based on the object in their DataContext. A mechanism similar to ItemTemplateSelector for styles would be great. Is that at all possible? I am now binding to properties in the objects that I am displaying to get the effect, but that feels like overhead and too complex (and most importantly, something that our XU designers can't do by themselves). • Saving UIImagePickerController images to Core Data without crashing

  I have been trying to minimize my memory footprint with UIImagePickerController, but I'm starting to think that the memory problems I am having are resulting from poor memory management, instead of a particular way to handle the UIImagePickerController object. My workflow is this: The "Edit Image" button is clicked, which presents a UIActionSheet. This action sheet allows you to delete, take a picture, choose from the library, or cancel. It leads me to believe that I am not getting that full image out of memory the correct way. What am I missing here? And on a second note, does the Camera source use significantly more memory than the Photo Albums source? I tend to get more crashes when using the camera.

• ListView: convertView / holder getting confused

  I'm working with a ListView, trying to get the convertView / referenceHolder optimisation to work properly but it's giving me trouble. (This is the system where you store the R.id.xxx pointers in as a tag for each View to avoid having to call findViewById). I have a ListView populated with simple rows of an ImageView and some text, but the ImageView can be formatted either for portrait-sized images (tall and narrow) or landscape-sized images (short and wide). It's adjusting this formatting for each row which isn't working as I had hoped. The basic system is that to begin with, it inflates the layout for each row and sets the ImageView's settings based on the data, and includes an int denoting the orientation in the tag containing the R.id.xxx values. Then when it starts reusing convertViews, it checks this saved orientation against the orientation of the new row. The theory then is that if the orientation is the same, then the ImageView should already be set up correctly. If it isn't, then it sets the parameters for the ImageView as appropriate and updates the tag. However, I found that it was somehow getting confused; sometimes the tag would get out of sync with the orientation of the ImageView. For example, the tag would still say portrait, but the actual ImageView would still be in landscape layout. I couldn't find a pattern to how or when this happened; it wasn't consistent by orientation, position in the list or speed of scrolling. I can solve the problem by simply removing the check about convertView's orientation and simply always set the ImageView's parameters, but that seems to defeat the purpose of this optimisation. • StaleDataException: access closed cursor

  In my application, after enough clicking around, I get this error: 06-08 19:47:59.967: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(2429): java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to pause activity {com.MYAPP.app/com.MYAPP.app.MainActivity}: android.database.StaleDataException: Access closed cursor What I have is a Tab Activity (my MainActivity), which has a ListActivity as the contents for each tab. Inside the onCreate for each ListActivity I get a cursor that represents the data to be displayed in that list. The onListItemClick for each list also creates another activity, so clicking on an item in the list will show more information about that item in a new screen. It's inconsistent, but after enough clicking into these new activities, or going back to the ListView from a new activity, the program crashes. In searching around for a solution to my problem, I did stumble upon registerDataSetObserver, but it doesn't seem to be the whole answer. I am also having trouble finding documentation on it, so I'm not sure I fully understand it. I have a custom ListAdapter that both my ListViews use and have called registerDataSetObservers on the cursors there. I have attached the relevant code from one of my ListActivities and from my custom ListAdapter class. The ListActivity. • How to move child element from one parent to another using jQuery

  I am using the jQuery DataTables plugin. I would like to move the search box (.dataTables_filter) and number of records to display dropdown (.dataTables_length) from their parent element (.dataTables_wrapper) to another div on my page without losing any registered javascript behavior. For instance the search box has a function attached to the 'keyup' event and I want to keep that intact. I have also considered changing the CSS so that the elements are absolutely positioned - but to be frank the page is setup with fluid elements all over, and I really want these elements to be floated in their new parents. Any help with this is much appreciated.

  I've got an issue with the BasicAuthProvider in ServiceStack. POST-ing to the CredentialsAuthProvider (/auth/credentials) is working fine. The problem is that when GET-ing (in Chrome): http://foo:pwd@localhost:81/tag/string/list the following is the result Handler for Request not found: Request.HttpMethod: GET Request.HttpMethod: GET Request.PathInfo: /login Request.QueryString: System.Collections.Specialized.NameValueCollection Request.RawUrl: /login?redirect=http%3a%2f%2flocalhost%3a81%2ftag%2fstring%2flist which tells me that it redirected me to /login instead of serving the /tag/... request.   Hi everybody, I have a problem with the jquery-autocomplete pluging and my django script. I want an easy to use autocomplete plugin. And for what I see this (http://code.google.com/p/jquery-autocomplete/) one seems very usefull and easy. For the django part I use this (http://code.google.com/p/django-ajax-selects/) I modified it a little, because the out put looked a little bit weired to me. It had 2 '\n' for each new line, and there was no Content-Length Header in the response. First I thought this could be the problem, because all the online examples I found had them. But that was not the problem. If I just copy the line into my browser, I can see the the response. (this issue is solved, it was a safety feature from ajax not to get data from another domain) For example when I am typing Bi in the textfield, the url "http://gladis.org/ajax/tag?q=Bi&max... is generated. When you enter this in your browser you get this response: 4|Bier|Bier 43|Kolumbien|Kolumbien 33|Namibia|Namibia Now my ajax call get the correct response, but there is still no list showing up with all the possible entries. I tried also to format the output, but this doesn't work either. I set brakepoints to the function and realized that they won't be called at all. • Lock-Free, Wait-Free and Wait-freedom algorithms for non-blocking multi-thread synchronization.

  In multi thread programming we can find different terms for data transfer synchronization between two or more threads/tasks. When exactly we can say that some algorithem is: 1)Lock-Free 2)Wait-Free 3)Wait-Freedom I understand what means Lock-free but when we can say that some synchronization algorithm is Wait-Free or Wait-Freedom? I have made some code (ring buffer) for multi-thread synchronization and it use Lock-Free methods but: 1) Algorithm predicts maximum execution time of this routine. 2) Therad which call this routine at beginning set unique reference, what mean that is inside of this routine. 3) Other threads which are calling the same routine check this reference and if is set than count the CPU tick count (measure time) of first involved thread. If that time is to long interrupt the current work of involved thread and overrides him job. 4) Thread which not finished job because was interrupted from task scheduler (is reposed) at the end check the reference if not belongs to him repeat the job again. So this algorithm is not really Lock-free but there is no memory lock in use, and other involved threads can wait (or not) certain time before overide the job of reposed thread. From my another question: I'm trying to make a meta-language for writing markup code (such as xml and html) wich can be directly embedded into C/C++ code.   Hi all I'm working on a GMaps application to retrieve images, via getJSON(), and to populate a popup marker. So, I decided to the keep the images outside and then once loaded, append it to the CampWindow . It's not working still; when I append the div to the main CampWindow div, the images won't show. I check in Firebug with the pointer thingy and it shows me the images as empty. I try it again with the images outside and it shows the images. I've tried before append and appendTo with no success. Am I missing something here? I have no more woohoo to claw out. I have done the following: Traced the id_color value to the create method, still got replaced by a 3 Hardcoded the value in the DAO create method, still got replaced by a 3 Called the procedure from the MySQL Workbench, it worked fined so I assume something is happening in the create method, any help is really appreciated.

• Sharepoint RSS feed description fields as elements

  Hello, This is my first time working with RSS but I am fluent with XML/XSL. I have a RSS feed that I am pulling from a list in Sharepoint. The sample XML is below. The RSS description element parses the various columns (Body, Expires, Attachments) that are in the Sharepoint list automatically. I know that from the list I can control which fields are included in the description, but this is not what I am looking to do. Is there any way to force the fields to come through in an XML element format instead of the CDATA that converted to HTML? For example, I may want to check a priority field and if it is important when applying the XSL I would bold red it or something. So far, my pattern looks like this: /\<p\>(.*?)(<\/p>)/g And I'm replacing the matches with: $1\n It all looks good, but it's also replacing the contents inside the [code][/code] tags, which in this case should not replace the tags at all, so as a result, i would lkike to get rid of the tags, when the content isn't inside the [code] tags. I can't ever get negation right, I know it will be something along the lines of \<p\>^\[code*\](.*?)(<\/p>) But obviously this doesn't work :-) Could anyone please lend me a hand with this regex? BTW, I know I shouldn't be using regular expressions to parse HTML at all. I'm fully aware of that, but still, for this specific case, I'd like to use regex. Thanks in advance

The results are okay, but the layout of the View is messed up: The GridView doesn't fill the content of its parent, what do I have to do to design it properly? • Javascript/Jquery Super Scrollorama Navigation Issues

  On a Wordpress site I am currently working on, my client wanted the different sections of the front page to slide up from the bottom and cover up the previous section, like a wipe or slide transition. Using super scrollorama found here: http://johnpolacek.github.com/superscrollorama/, I managed to achieve the desired result. Next, I needed to create a navigation menu on the front page only. I did so, and set anchors at various different points on the pages. I also used the scrollTo library for scolling animations when I click the nav menu links. However, there are a number of problems I have encountered: When at the top and I click "showcase", it brings me down to the showcase section, but the products section (the div right after it) is overlapping it. Other divs seems to have the same problem of the following divs overlapping the current one I can only navigate forwards. When I try to go backwards, it won't (except for "Home") I thought it might have something to do with the CSS "top" property of the divs, so I tried resetting them every time the click function kicked in, but it didn't work. So I removed it for the time being. Currently set the javascript to prevent the default action of scrolling to the anchors and instead setting it to scroll to the actual divs themselves. However, I'm still having the same issues. • Facebook Oauth Logout

  I have an application that integrates with Facebook using Oauth 2. I can authorize with FB and query their REST and Graph APIs perfectly well, but when I authorize an active browser session is created with FB. I can then log-out of my application just fine, but the session with FB persists, so if anyone else uses the browser they will see the previous users FB account (unless the previous user manually logs out of FB also). The steps I take to authorize are: Call [LINK: graph.facebook.com/oauth/authorize?client_id...] This step opens a Facebook login/connect window if the user's browser doesn't already have an active FB session. Once they log-in to facebook they redirect to my site with a code I can exchange for an oauth token. Call [LINK: graph.facebook.com/oauth/access_token?client_id..] with the code from (1) Now I have an Oauth Token, and the user's browser is logged into my site, and into FB. I call a bunch of APIs to do stuff: i.e. [LINK: graph.facebook.com/me?access_token=..] Lets say my user wants to log out of my site. The FB terms and conditions demand that I perform Single Sign Off, so when the user logs out of my site, they also are logged out of Facebook. There are arguments that this is a bit daft, but I'm happy to comply if there is any way of actually achieving that. I have seen suggestions that: A. I use the Javascript API to logout: FB.Connect.logout(). Well I tried using that, but it didn't work, and I'm not sure exactly how it could, as I don't use the Javascript API in any way on my site. The session isn't maintained or created by the Javascript API so I'm not sure how it's supposed to expire it either. B. Use [LINK: facebook.com/logout.php]. This was suggested by an admin in the Facebook forums some time ago. The example given related to the old way of getting FB sessions (non-oauth) so I don't think I can apply it in my case. C. Use the old REST api expireSession or revokeAuthorization. I tried both of these and while they do expire the Oauth token they don't invalidate the session that the browser is currently using so it has no effect, the user is not logged out of Facebook. I'm really at a bit of a loose end, the Facebook documentation is patchy, ambiguous and pretty poor. The support on the forums is non-existant, at the moment I can't even log in to the facebook forum, and aside from that, their own FB Connect integration doesn't even work on the forum itself.
