  • How to implement a syndication receiver? (multi-client / single server)

    I have to come up with a system architecture. A few hundred remote devices will be communicating over internet with a central server which will receive data and store it in a database. I could write my own TCP/IP based protocol use SOAP use AJAX use RSS anything else? This is currently seen as one way (telemetry, as opposed to SCADA). Would it make a difference if we make it bi-directional. There are no plans to do so, but Murphy's law makes me wary of a uni-directional solution (on the data plane; I imagine that the control plane is bi-directional in all solutions (?)). I hope that this is not too subjective. I would like a solution which is quick and easy to implement and for others to support and where the general "communications pipeline" from remote deceives to database server can be re-used as the core of future projects. I have a strong background in telecomms protocols, in C/C++ and PHP.

  • Mac Finder - Alternate default application?

    Hi, Double click on an image opens the default application associated with it. E.g. "jpg" opens with "Preview", but some times I need to open with an alternate application, e.g. photo editing software. I don't want to change the "default" handling from "Preview" but may be with "Cmd-Enter" or "Ctrl-Enter" I want to open with another application instead of "Open With"-Select Application... Is it possible? Thanks.

    Hi guys, I was editing the /etc/inetd.conf file in VI to enable SSH and when I believed to have saved it. I entered cat and pressed enter accidently. Now I seem to be stuck in a black screen where I can enter characters but can't exit from it. How would I go on my way to get back to the normal console without rebooting the ESXi. Thanks

It seems I have to press ESC key first, only then it works. But it doesn't works, I've tried without 'exec', with -X option and a lot more. Any ideas ?

The widget will analyse the remote webpage title and content, then it will return relevent articles/links on my website. The amount of traffic we expect will be very huge roughly 500K queries a day and up from there. I need the queries to be returned very quickly, so I need the candidate to be high performance, similar to google adsense. The remote title can be from 5 to 50 words and the description we will use no more then 3000 words. Which of these two do you think can handle the load.

    Emacs does not seem to respect the OS's key repeat rate. I'm using emacs in the terminal. I've set the repeat rate to as fast as possible by directly editing the settings in the following file (I restarted after making the change): open ~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist The rest of the system observes the repeat rate. The terminal works as expected, as does vim. But, when I use emacs I still get the annoyingly slow repeat rate.

    I'm trying to figure out the best way to insert content into a light box using rails UJS. I have a link that looks like this: <%= link_to "login", login_path, :remote => true %> Which produces html as such: <a data-remote="true" href="/login">login</a> So this all works great, and I've created the view file: user_sessions/new.js.erb which also loads just fine, but my question what is the preferred method of inserting appending the html into the page? Like I already have the login form on the non-js page, so can't I just load that partial into the page? Any ideas would be very welcomed.

  • Can I undo the last git push?

    A team member accidentally pushed half a gig of unwanted zips to the remote repo last night when they were in a rush. Yes... oops. Nobody has pulled or committed since. Ideally I want to just 'undo' what happened. I have looked at filter-branch and was thinking of trying something like git filter-branch --tree-filter 'rm -f *.zip' HEAD but that would be local, and I can't figure out how to do it direct on the remote repo. Is there a simpler way to undo what happened? If she amends her last commit and pushes again will that undo the push - ie actually remove those files from the history? Obviously if she deletes them, commits and pushes again then that still leaves the content in the repo, which is no good.

Instead of editing a bunch of different vimrc, I would like to know if it's possible to have an "include" directive - something like a file named ".vimrc_module" and called from vimrc. Is it possible?

  • How to prevent maven to resolve dependencies in local repository

    Is there a way to tell maven (when doing mvn package, mvn site or ...) not to resolve the dependencies from the local repository? Background of this question: Sometimes I get into problems, when previously cached dependencies (e.g. SomeProject-0.7-ALPHA) are no longer available in the remote repository. In my local build everything still works fine as the dependency has been cached before. As soon as I share my pom with others, they may get into trouble, as they dont have a cached version of that dependency and the dependency can no longer be resolved from the remote repository.     I have a script that uses ftp_connect() among other FTP PHP functions for uploading a file. ftp_connect() works when executed on my local development server for connecting to a remote FTP server. The same script, when executed on the remote server does not work for connecting to the exact same FTP server. Could somebody please point me in the right direction? Thanks!     Hi all, I have a windows service responsible for running processes on a remote machine with capturing the output, I googled for that and read a lot of articles and threads, I found two ways: 1) using WMI for call the remote process like this example: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cs/EverythingInWmi02.aspx 2) using the PsExec tool by System.Diagnostic.Process class ever way of these has many problems, the WMI doesn't support returning the output and doesn't support "WaitingToExit" It just call the process and return the PId, and the PsExec couldn't capture the output programmatically by System.Diagnostic.Process in a clear way, I found only workarounds like redirect the output to a file then read the redirected file..etc, I need a real solution please

"Permission denied (publickey). fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly" I vaguely remember following some sshgen steps I took when I created my 1st github repository but I have forgotten what it was.
