  • Why does Ubuntu feel so sluggish on my asus 1000HE netbook

    I recently purchased a nice asus 1000HE, and installed Ubuntu NBR. However, I'm pretty disappointed with how sluggish it feels. I'm wondering if I maybe need to install a closed-source graphics driver - it feels similar to how my work laptop performed before I installed the restricted nvidia driver on that machine.   • How to switch between the upper and lower pane in emacs?

    I am using the erlang mode in Aquamacs. The mode, by default, creates a new pane and buffer "*erlang*" when I hit C-C C-K to compile an erlang file. (as seen in the attached screen shot) What is the easiest way to switch between these two panes? I do not think "C-x b" is applicable in this case because 'C-X b' then "*erlang" is slow considering I have to switch between my files and the erlang shell rather frequently.

    LTO tapes, Maxell in this case, are often marketed as having 30 years or more shelf life when stored under "optimal conditions" Is there a way to get a good estimation to the shelf life, given parameters such as relative humidity and temperature etc? Obsolescence of the tapes aside, is there a way of determining the impact to shelf life of any deviance from the optimal. In other words how many years are lost when storing say 1 degree above the specified range? regards Emil

  • Windows Server 2003 IPSec Tunnel Connected, But Not Working (Possibly NAT/RRAS Related)

    Configuration I have setup a "raw" IPSec tunnel between a Windows Server 2003 (SBS) machine and a Netgear FVG318 according to the instructions in Microsoft KB816514. The configuration is as follows (using the same conventions as the article): NetA | SBS2003 | FVG318 | NetB 10.0.0.0/24 | 216.x.x.x | 69.y.y.y | 10.0.254.0/24 Both the Main Mode and Quick Mode Security Associations are successfully completed and appear in the IP Security Monitor. I am also able to ping the SBS2003 server on its private address from any computer on NetB. The Problem Any traffic sent from a computer on NetA to NetB, or from SBS2003 to NetB (excluding ICMP Ping responses), is sent out on the public network interface outside the IPSec tunnel (no encryption or header authentication, as if the tunnel were not there). Pings sent from a computer on NetB to a computer on NetA successfully reach computers on NetA, but the responses are silently discarded by SBS2003 (they do not go out in the clear and do not generate any encrypted traffic). Possible Solutions Incorrect Configuration I could have mistyped something, somewhere, or KB816514 could be incorrect in some way. I have tried very hard to eliminate the first option. Have re-created the configuration several times, tried tweaking and adjusting all the settings I could without success (most prevent the SA from being established). NAT/RRAS I have seen multiple posts elsewhere suggesting that this could be due to interaction between NAT and the IPSec filters. Possibly the NetA private addresses get rewritten to 216.x.x.x before being compared with the Quick Mode IPSec filters and don't get tunneled because of the mismatch. In fact, The Cable Guy article from June 2005 "TCP/IP Packet Processing Paths" suggests that this is the case, (see step 2 and 4 of the Transit Traffic path). If this is the case, is there a way to exclude NetA-NetB traffic from NAT? Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions, and/or comments are appreciated. Update (2011-06-26) After failing to solve the problem, I resorted to paid Microsoft support. They were unable to solve the problem. Since then I have implemented a solution based on Linux that is working quite well. I will attempt to evaluate any proposed answers as best I can, but current configurations and time constraints will make this slow...

    Will cooler that is designed to LGA775 CPUs install on LGA1156 CPU or are they mechanically incompatible? I'm building my first 1U server and surprise-surprise - Intel stock cooler doesn't fit (unless I'm willing to keep the case open). Places that I prefer to buy stuff from are currently out of stock on 1U 1156 heatsinks so I'm wondering if LGA775 would do the trick.

    I have a networked drive (Iomega Media Drive). To be safe in case the drives crashes, I've decided to buy an additional networked drive (WD MyBook World). Now, how do I backup one onto the other continuously? The WD drive came with a backup software (trial version, they didn't say that when i bought it), however it doesn't allow me to select a networked drive, only local drives.     Recently I've become very interested in setting up a fileserver, mostly for home usage but also because of the fact that I live in 2 places, I need to be able to access my files from both homes. I have already done some research into this but I am unclear about some things. My requirements are the following; Needs to work on both Mac and PC(only using Windows atm on PC but could be good if it supports more OS's to make it futureproof in case I need Linux or something else) Need to be able to set up a folder/drive/network space to act as a link to a certain folder on the fileserver All files should only be stored on the fileserver, e.g. no "shared" folders like in Dropbox where files are stored on the client computer Would prefer it if folders are password protected or that I can somehow specify what users can access the fileserver's shares Fileserver's OS most likely have to be Windows due to other factors outside of being just a fileserver I've already kinda figured out that I will need to set up a VPN so that I can access my fileserver from outside the local network. Probably going to use OpenVPN. Question 1: How would I go about to set up a VPN server so that I can connect to my local network at the fileserver's location? I know that since I'm on a dynamic IP I will have to get some sort of dynamic DNS server - I've already checked into this and I'm fairly sure I know how to fix that. I also know that I will have to forward the port OpenVPN uses in my router. Question 2: How would I actually share the folders on the fileserver so that I can access them on my other computers? I've researched into Samba but I'm uncertain if it needs to be run on a Linux OS. I know that the clients connecting to it can be Windows for example but can the Samba "server" be run on Windows? Also it appears that Samba shares a folder, meaning it works like Dropbox - I don't want that. So how would I share a folder in that case to make it work like I want it to? Sorry for the incredibly long question, I tried to structure it the best I could for easier read. Thanks in advance!

  • How to restore a VirtualBox image given the .vdi file

    Background I have VirtualBox on Linux and recently the drive with the system files failed on me. I'm able to use the Live CD to view the files of the storage drive, and through this, I can copy my data files to another computer while I work on this one. How do I load the .vdi in another computer (or in this case, the fresh install of Ubuntu)? I see many samples online of how to export it, but it assumes the host is currently working. Thanks!

    Let's say I have a directory with a few files in it like this: $ ls file1 file2 file3 And I want to do some tab completion in bash: $ cat file<tab> file1 file2 file3 I remember seeing someone doing tab completion and the shell bolded the next parts, so in this case, it would bold the 1, 2 and 3 of the filename so it'll look like this: file**1** file**2** file**3** which will tell you what you should type in next. I think this was a feature of zsh, but is there any way to get it in bash?

  • Postfix send remotely for X account

    I setup Postfix a few days ago to deliver email bound for my host name remotely instead of locally as I want email sent to my remote [email protected] account without trying to be sent locally. However, this causes a problem as it tries to send local bound mail(root) to my remote server as well ([email protected]). I would like E-mail bound for [email protected] to be sent to the remote server(GMail Apps in this case) and everything else sent locally(using the alias file perhaps), is this possible?   • Distinction between an extranet and a DMZ

    I've been reading about intranets, extranets, DMZs and VPNs now, and I'd need some clarifications related to extranets and DMZs. I understand that they are different types of concepts - extranet allows limited access to some intranet resources, while DMZ is a subnet that sits between the internet and intranet and hosts the external-faced services. However, I'd like to know what is their distinction in practice in a usual setup? The Wikipedia article on extranets says that extranets are similar to DMZs because they are used for the same purpose (providing access to some services/resources without exposing the whole intranet). The article also states that an extranet is a part of a VPN, and this TechNet article also states that extranet access is often implemented similarly to remote intranet access, e.g. with a VPN. The TechNet article also says that commonly the extranet is hosted inside the DMZ. This Pearson article says "Although [the DMZ] is technically located within the intranet, [it] can serve as the extranet as well". This is slightly confusing. Consider this scenario: A company has a B2C website hosted in the DMZ. The website can be accessed from anywhere, but requires user authentication. The underlying web app has its database inside the intranet and also interacts with some web services that are hosted inside the intranet (i.e. it accesses intranet resources). The way I see it, the website does effectively offer a restricted access to the intranet. But can it be considered an extranet? If we take the Wikipedia definition of an extranet literally - "An extranet is a computer network that allows controlled access from outside of an organization's intranet" - I think it can. Let's say that the above can't be considered an extranet. What if we change the scenario slightly, and say it's a B2B website, where the access is e.g. limited to connections coming from a specific business partner (by using site-to-site VPN, for example). In this case it surely is an extranet, right? If this is the case, then the difference between extranet services and any other services hosted in the DMZ is simply access restrictions?

(looking specifically for Outlook, but open to all ideas)? Something similar to Chrome's feature where after a crash, it says "Looks like Chrome didn't shut down properly.   • Completely remove user account and create another with same name in Windows 7

    Here's my question simply and then the details in case they help to get me an appropriate answer. Question: How can I completely and permanently delete a user account in Windows 7 so that I can create another one with the same user name without the computer name extension added, eg Jane Smith not Jane Smith.computer name? The details: I just did a clean install of Windows 7 Professional 32 bit. (My laptop crashed, I reinstalled Vista and restored backup files but things weren't working so I decided to just get Windows 7 since I had to start over anyway). I used Windows Easy Transfer to save just about everything, even customizing to include a user's appdata from Windows.old which was created when I reinstalled Vista -- not knowing that another windows.old file would be created with the installation of Windows 7. After installing Windows 7, I used Windows Easy Transfer to transfer the user file, appdata, to the new user account which I gave the same name (Jane Smith) in case having a different name would cause problems with reading files or something. Afterwards, I realized that I did not want ALL of that junk. So, I thought no problem, I'll just delete the user account I just created, nothing lost, and create another one this time transferring only the files I wanted (using the customize option in windows easy transfer). I wanted to keep the same user name, e.g. Jane Smith, so after I deleted the user account I checked the files, and I didn't see. It was late so I went to bed and the next morning I created a new user with that same name (Jane Smith). The files looked fine if I remember correctly. Meanwhile, I updated the computer and it restarted a couple times. As I was moving files to the "Jane Smith" user account file, things weren't working as they should. I was actually moving files to the deleted user account and that the current user account was named "Jane Smith.computer name" and that's where the files needed to go. I don't like this. It's too confusing. I want just "Jane Smith". How can I do this without just changing the user name (which doesn't change it in the file path etc)? I want the first one GONE. If I can't do this, is it a problem to create an account with another name and still transfer files to it without path or other problems? I hope this question makes sense and that someone can help me. Thank you in advance!

    Hi All I recently bought a new computer and Windows 7 Home Premium. I only have one small problem though. I have the option "Show Window Contents While Dragging" enabled, but everytime I restart the computer, it reverts back to DISabled. The only thing i could think of is the system requirements etc. But this is not the case as my computer more than meets the full requirements. Can somebody help me please? Thank you

  • Group readable cron jobs a security risk?

    Hi, I was just wondering, is using a cron job that is group readable a security risk? In this case, the script is chmod 755, and the group is basically a group of the sysadmins on the machine. The permissions seem to be fine, but I'm just wondering whether it's a bad idea to keep this script in a group or world readable place because it's a backup script that needs to be run as root. The users are end-users, on the low end of computer literate, non developers. We have around 5 support people and 50 or so end users.
