  In order to assess performance monitoring accuracy on virtualization platforms, the CPU steal time has become an increasingly relevant metric - see EC2 monitoring: the case of stolen CPU for an instructive summary in the context of Amazon EC2 and IBM's paper on CPU time accounting for a more in-depth technical explanation (including illustrations) of the concept: Steal time is the percentage of time a virtual CPU waits for a real CPU while the hypervisor is servicing another virtual processor. Accordingly, it is exposed in most related Unix/Linux monitoring tools nowadays - see e.g. columns %steal or st in sar or top: st -- Steal Time The amount of CPU 'stolen' from this virtual machine by the hypervisor for other tasks (such as running another virtual machine). I've been unable to figure out how to capture the same metric on Windows though, is this possible already? (Ideally for the Windows 2008 Server R2 AMIs on EC2 and via a respective Windows Performance Counters of course.)

• Accessing apache in ubuntu 10 virtualbox guest from ubuntu 10 host

  I did the following: installed VirtualBox 3.1.6 OSE in ubuntu 10 desktop. installed ubuntu 10 server on a virtual machine in VirtualBox. select "LAMP server" and "OpenSSH server" options during the ubuntu server installation. leave network "adapter 1" of virtual machine as "NAT". use "VBoxManage" described in manual to setup port forwarding on the host (Protocol: TCP, GuestPort: 80, HostPort: 8080). verify "ExtraDataItem" have been added to "ubuntuServer1.xml" (my virtual machine name) correctly. run command "pgrep apache" in ubuntu server in virtual machine to ensure apache is running. Everything went well. But, when I try to access the apache from the browser on the host with "http://localhost:8080/", it just continue fetching with no response. Now, I'm struck! Please help! Many many thanks in advance!

  I just want to set a a Virtualbox virtual appliance to make it portable. Meaning that I'll enable a network config which will not need to be changed when I am using my laptop in a different network. I want the virtual machine to have internet access to keep it updated and be able to always have direct access from host using, for example, the IP 10.0.2.100 even when I am in a 192.168.0.1 network. So the first virtual network adapter will have a static ip (10.0.2.100) and the second will receive it from the DHCP. I don't know if 2 virtual adapters are needed or just one to accomplish that.

• Cannot get SCVMM Admin Console to Connect to Hyper-V Server 2008 R2

  I cannot get SCVMM Admin console to connect to Hyper-V Server 2008. I have changed all firewall settings on the server to allow for a connection, I have even tried turning the firewall off completely. I am getting this error message: Unable to connect to the Virtual Machine Manager server xx.xxx.xxx.xx. the Virtual Machine Manager service on that servier did not respond. Verify that Virtual Machine Manager has been installed on the server and that the Virtual Machine Manager service is running. Then try to connect again. If the problem persists, restart the Virtual Machine Manager Service. ID: 1602 I have tried restarting the VMMS service, and that did not work. I have posted a similar question to this before, and was told to make sure to intall the Hyper-V agent on the Hyper-V server. I was told that SCVMM can push the agent out to the server. However, if I cannot connect to the server, how can I use SCVMM to push out the agent? Thanks for any help.

  Ok, I feel dumb. I've put many hours into this and found nothing, yet. When I was using Windows I had this little tool called WinSplit Revolution. What it did was letting you divide your screen into how many and of how much size you choose "virtual monitors". You set one time of you want to divide your monitor, then everytime WinSplit is opened the monitor is automatically divided into Virtual Monitors. I tried Divvy but I found no way to divide my screen into arbitrary "virtual monitors", I need a couple of clicks to select a 3x3 space on a 9x9 grid. Before starting coding something like this can you tell me if you already know of some software that does window management like this?

• Quantifying the effects of partition mis-alignment

  I'm experiencing some significant performance issues on an NFS server. I've been reading up a bit on partition alignment, and I think I have my partitions mis-aligned. I can't find anything that tells me how to actually quantify the effects of mis-aligned partitions. Some of the general information I found suggests the performance penalty can be quite high (upwards of 60%) and others say it's negligible. What I want to do is determine if partition alignment is a factor in this server's performance problems or not; and if so, to what degree? So I'll put my info out here, and hopefully the community can confirm if my partitions are indeed mis-aligned, and if so, help me put a number to what the performance cost is. Server is a Dell R510 with dual E5620 CPUs and 8 GB RAM. There are eight 15k 2.5” 600 GB drives (Seagate ST3600057SS) configured in hardware RAID-6 with a single hot spare. RAID controller is a Dell PERC H700 w/512MB cache (Linux sees this as a LSI MegaSAS 9260). OS is CentOS 5.6, home directory partition is ext3, with options “rw,data=journal,usrquota”. • unable to ping hostname, but \\hostname\\c$ works!?

  I'm having a strange issue on my initial lab setup. Situation: Host with OS Server 2008 R2 64bit, on this host a Virtual Machine in Hyper-V with OS Server 2008 SP1 32bit. The virtual machine has a fixed ip, and is referring to itself for the preferred DNS Server (dns server role has been installed). The host has tcp/ip set to automatic (so automatic ip from router, and dns/gateway = router). Both are able to ping each other on IP address (same ip range). Both are NOT able to ping each other on hostname (sounds logic because virtual machine dns server does not yet have a dns record for the hostmachine). But here's the strange thing: I am able to set up a working network mapping on the Virtual Machine to the host: \hostname\c$. The first thing I thougt was 'something' is blocking the ping request, so I completely disabled Windows Firewall on both Virtual Machine and host. Still pinging on hostname in both ways didn't work, yet I am able to access the network mapping on hostname. There is no extra software installed on both systems (clean windows server 2008).Can someone tell me what is causing this? I always thought: ping on IP address works = network mapping on IP address works. Pinging on hostname doesn't work = network mapping on hostname doesn't work neither. Where am I wrong? Looking forward to your advice!

  I have a VMware ESXi 4 server and 2 storage servers (mounted via nfs). Between the storage servers (Fedora 14) is a drbd cluster (dual primary) and ocfs2 filesystem; also every server has a local partition with an ext4 filesystem, both are mounted via nfs on the esxi server. When I tried to copy a virtual machine (naturally it was powered off) from the ext4 partition to the ocfs2 partition, the vmdk total file size is different, but the md5sum is the same. On the ext4 partition: # ls -la total 28492228 -rw------- 1 root root 42949672960 Jan 14 14:46 disk-flat.vmdk # md5sum disk-flat.vmdk 0eaebe3138beb32f54ea5de6dfe5a987 On the ocfs2 partition: # ls -la total 13974660 -rw------- 1 root root 42949672960 Jan 14 16:16 disk-flat.vmdk # md5sum disk-flat.vmdk 0eaebe3138beb32f54ea5de6dfe5a987 When I power on the virtual machine from the ocfs2 partition it dosn't work. I have a windows on the virtual machine and it freez?s after the windows logo. From the ext4 partition the virtual machine workes. I tested with linux (created and installed on ext4 partition and then copied to the ocfs2) and the same problem appears. When I create a virtual machine directly from ocfs2 partition, there are no problems. I tried to copy via vSphere client, and I have the same problem. Any suggestions?

  I'm getting this warning from Apache: The Alias directive in /etc/httpd/conf.d/foo.conf at line 10 will probably never match because it overlaps an earlier Alias. However the Alias overlaps on a completely different virtual host. Might this be caused because one alias is on a name-based virtual host while the other alias is on an IP-based virtual host? Everything is working fine, just the warning is a bit annoying...

But when i installed it , it shows one screen with no options for making virtual machines. If can't make virtual machines from ESXI , then what is it used for. I formatted my Harddisk just for ESXi but then again had to install windows and then VM workstation.

  I have a full system image using Acronis True Image Home 10 and want to run it as a virtual machine on Windows 7 Professional. I have created a virtual machine but Windows Virtual PC doesn't allow access to a USB external hard disk when booting from the Acronis Recovery CD. I've copied the backup onto the host machine and I can access it via the network using the Acronis boot CD but I'm wondering if there is an easier way? Does any other free Virtual Machine software support USB devices during boot (i.e. I can restore a backup image from the USB hard disk directly)

  I'm trying to create differencing image based on differencing image in VirtualBox 4.2.18. Official documentation says it should be possible: http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch05.html#diffimages Basically I want to achieve this drive hierarchy: + immutable image with Debian and all software installed +---- differencing image with specific configuration, autoreset=off, readonly +-------- differencing image with autoreset=on +---- another differencing image for different virtual machine +-------- differencing image with autoreset=on I successfully created differencing image based on differencing image, but I'm not able to connect it to virtual machine :( It always shows error: Failed to open the hard disk .... cannot register hard disk ... because hard disk with UUID ... already exists Here is screenshot of Virtual Media Manager and error dialog Virtual Media Manager Window screenshot Very strange is that the new differencing image (tempdrive.vdi) doesn't have Actual Size 0. I wasn't able to connect it, but still, it has 36KB of data on it... This is very similar to this older question: How to create a chained differencing disk of another differencing disk in Virtual Box? but suggested solution is not working anymore in VirtualBox 4.2.18, so I posted it as a new question.   I have a dual boot machine (Win7 RC and Win2008) and want to migrate one of the partitions (Win2008) into a Virtual Hard Drive and the be able to use it in VPC or Virtual Server (not Hyper-V). • Exchange 2007 OWA returns blank page with url xxxxx&reason=0

  Hi All: I've just run into an issue with my exchange OWA. It returns a blank page with the url string https://www.xxxxxxxx/&reason=0. Nothing in the logs gives me any good reasons. Here's what I've done so far; 1) reinstall Exchange roll-up 7. 2) recreate virtual directories. 3) reboot. (this was mostly a shot in the dark, but what the hell) Exchange via rpc/https is still working great. Anyone run into this before? • VMware and Windows Activation

  Yesterday I installed Slysoft's Virtual CloneDrive in order to mount an iso for some software installation on my host system (XP Pro SP3) This morning I fired up VMware and made a linked clone of an existing XP vm in order to do some software testing. This is the sort of thing that I do all the time, and the base XP vm that I clone was activated a long long time ago. The surprise today was that the newly cloned vm was no longer activated and XP cited major changes in hardware as the reason. I repeated the test with a full clone of the base system and got the same message. I then started up my base vm and it seemed to be activated, yet another vm (which I fully cloned from the base vm a long time ago) now started reporting that XP was not activated. At this point I guessed that Virtual DriveClone might have been the source of my hardware differences so I uninstalled it and rebooted. After this I made a new linked clone and full clone of the base vm and XP did not complain about not being activated. So I seem to be back to where I was before installing Virtual DriveClone with the exception that that one particular XP vm continues to complain about activation (even though 4 or 5 other XP vm's are fat and happy) Now to my questions: Why would adding Virtual CloneDrive to the host system affect XP activation on the vm's? From their point of view I would have thought that the environment had not changed as I had not enabled any new hard drives in their systems. Or is adding a hard drive to the host system enough to upset XP activation? Since this event, one of my fully cloned vm's is still reporting that XP is not activated even though I have removed Virtual CloneDrive. Is there anyway to convince XP that it is on the same system as yesterday? Or are my only options to do an activation or restore the vm from a previous backup?

• How to share internet connection on Mac os x to Virtualbox vm's using Host-only

  In one line : is the following possible : Airport <- osx bridge - vbox-Host-only - vm's On a mac os x, i have virtual box with a virtual machine. For now i have configured 2 interfaces for my virtual machine eth0 is normal bridge for my vm to acces the internet (when airport is connected) eth1 is set to host-only so i can access my vm from the host when there is no wifi/aiport is down. So basically it's like Adapter 1 when there is Wifi, Adapter 2 when there is not. I'd like to have only one configuration to make it simpler. I thought i could just keep the Host only configuration, and on the host (os x) go to internet sharing and select "share from airport" to vboxnet0 (the vb virtual interface). Only to find out that vboxnet0 dosn't show up in the interfaces list on os x preferences. I know that on a linux host you could install something called bridge-utils and use that to bridge the two insterfaces. Is there any thing like that for Mac ?

As regards directory structure for virtual mail users, the author of the tutorial writes: Virtual mail users are those that do not exist as Unix system users. They thus don't use the standard Unix methods of authentication or mail delivery and don't have home directories. That is how we are managing things here: mail users are defined in the database created by Postfix Admin rather than existing as system users.   I have a production environment where I am having 4 Guest OS running on a Ubuntu server which uses kvm. These OS are in an LVM based setup.I want these Virtual Machines to be in a vmdk format also.Where people would do experiments with these Virtual Machines so this in a vmware environment (or it can be Xen too) would be different from the kvm server.I would not have any control on that other environment so I want to give people vmdk images of these virtual machines. The production Virtual Machines will still keep running on kvm server but the VMs on which experiments would be done would be of type vmdk.(vmdk is a constraint) Here is output of lvscan ACTIVE '/dev/abcd/lvm1' [100.00 GiB] inherit ACTIVE '/dev/abcd/lvm2' [150.00 GiB] inherit ACTIVE '/dev/abcd/lvm3' [50.00 GiB] inherit ACTIVE '/dev/abcd/lvm4' [100.00 GiB] inherit I was reading man page of qemu-img and what I understand is I need to first create a qcow image file which I need to populate and then convert that to a vmdk file. Is that understanding correct? Now suppose /dev/abcd/lvm4 is the virtual machine with which I am going to start this experiment.I can shutdown the production VMs for some time to do this. So is the following way correct to go on server 1 (where kvm is running) qemu-img convert -c -f raw -O vmdk /dev/abcd/lvm4 /backup/lvm4.img or it will affect the lvm4 on kvm server 1. I do not want the VM running on original server to at all loose its any of the content but also have a vmdk file for each of the Guest OS on kvm. Before I proceed with any of the above things on the production machine I just want to make sure that I am doing the correct thing so I asking here.

• Test server on a local network with XAMPP

  Hi, I'm not very proficient with networks and could use some help. I've got a Win 7 desktop with XAMPP which acts as my local dev machine. I've configured a virtual host on the desktop which I'm able to access fine. If I'm understanding things correctly, the virtual host uses port 80 (<VirtualHost 127.0.0.1:80>). I've just tried to configure a separate Win XP laptop on the local wireless network to connect to the main desktop for testing purposes. I've added the IP address and virtual host name to my Hosts file on the laptop. My virtual host is imaginatively named "virtualhost1". When I type this into my laptop browser, it connects correctly to the main desktop and I get the XAMPP welcome screen. But I can't seem to get to the actual site, just the XAMPP welcome screen. It kind of jumps the browser to http://virtualhost1/xampp/. I think it's a port issue of some sort but I have no idea how to resolve it. I would get the same XAMPP welcome screen on my desktop if I omitted ":80" from the virtual host declaration. On my main desktop, typing "virtualhost1" to the browser address bar gives me the site correctly, not the XAMPP welcome screen. Help would be appreciated. Thank you.

• IIS 7.5 stops serving requests for no apparent reason

  We're running a site on 4 virtual Win 2008 R2 64 bit servers. This is the only site on the IIS, and we use Windows Network Load Balancing to share the load between our 4 virtual servers. We've used these virtual servers for approximately a week, and we're starting to see some issues. For no apparent reason the IIS stops serving pages, and doesn't even respond with an error. So upon requesting a page from the server, the browser just waits infinitely (or until it decides to give up clientside) Sometimes an iisreset fixes the issue, other times we have to reboot the entire virtual server. There are no traces in the eventlog of why this happens, and there's no traces in our applications exception log neither. Furthermore this happens even when there's a very small load on the server, so it doesn't seem to be because it's flooded with requests. So frankly I'm at a loss here - I have no idea where to start debugging this issue :-( I'm quite certain we never had these issues on our physical servers, however they were running Win 2003 32bit, so there are quite a few differences between them and the virtual ones. (Which obviously makes it difficult to tell what exactly causes this)

• vmware vmdk disk problem

  Hello, I have a vmware esxi 4 server and 2 storage servers (mount as nfs). Between the storage servers (fedora 14) is made drbd cluster (dual primary) and ocfs2 filesystem, also every server has local partition with ext4 filesystem, both are mounted as nfs on esxi server. When i tried to copy a virtual machine (naturally it power off) files from ext4 partition to ocfs2 partition, vmdk total file size is different, but md5sum is the same. on ext4 partition: # ls -la total 28492228 -rw------- 1 root root 42949672960 Jan 14 14:46 disk-flat.vmdk # md5sum disk-flat.vmdk 0eaebe3138beb32f54ea5de6dfe5a987 on ocfs2 partition: # ls -la total 13974660 -rw------- 1 root root 42949672960 Jan 14 16:16 disk-flat.vmdk # md5sum disk-flat.vmdk 0eaebe3138beb32f54ea5de6dfe5a987 When i power on the virtual machine from ocfs2 partition it dosn't work. I have a windows on the virtual machine and it freez?s after windows logo. From ext4 partition the virtual machine is worked. Test with linux (create and install on ext4 partition and copy) the same problem appears. When i create a virtual machine directly from ocfs2 partition, there are no problems. I tried to copy via vSphere client, and i have the same problem. Any suggestions ?
