  • Are these mySQL user settings vulnerable?

    I'm using myphpadmin to manage the databases and I'm new to SQL in general. Am I suppose to keep an open anonymous user on localhost so things like drupal can access mySQL? It seems like having a non-passworded root on my server's hostname is retarded but I don't know what I'm doing with this in general. The user who's name starts with a b is the one I use to login and do things like make a database.

From what I understand PostgreSQL is meant for smaller databases with high access times. Though to be honost I'm not quite sure.

  • Redirect all access requests to a domain and subdomain(s) except from specific IP address? [closed]

    This is a self-answered question... After much wrangling I found the magic combination of mod_rewrite rules so I'm posting here. My scenario is that I have two domains - domain1.com and domain2.com - both of which are currently serving identical content (by way of a global 301 redirect from domain1 to domain2). Domain1 was then chosen to be repurposed to be a 'portal' domain - with a corporate CMS-based site leading off from the front page, and the existing 'retail' domain (domain2) left to serve the main web site. In addition, a staging subdomain was created on domain1 in order to prepare the new corporate site without impinging on the root domain's existing operation. I contemplated just rewriting all requests to domain2 and setting up the new corporate site 'behind the scenes' without using a staging domain, but I usually use subdomains when setting up new sites. Finally, I required access to the 'actual' contents of the domains and subdomains - i.e., to not be redirected like all other visitors - in order that I can develop the new site and test it in the staging environment on the live server, as I'm not using a separate development webserver in this case. I also have another test subdomain on domain1 which needed to be preserved. The way I eventually set it up was as follows: (10.2.2.1 would be my home WAN IP) .htaccess in root of domain1 RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} !^10\.2\.2\.1 RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^staging.domain1.com$ [NC] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^staging2.domain1.com$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://domain2.com/$1 [R=301] .htaccess in staging subdomain on domain1: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} !^10\.2\.2\.1 RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^staging.revolver.coop$ [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://domain2.com/$1 [R=301,L] The multiple .htaccess files and multiple rulesets require more processing overhead and longer iteration as the visitor is potentially redirected twice, however I find it to be a more granular method of control as I can selectively allow more than one IP address access to individual staging subdomain(s) without automatically granting them access to everything else. It also keeps the rulesets fairly simple and easy to read. (or re-interpret, because I'm always forgetting how I put rules together!) If anybody can suggest a more efficient way of merging all these rules and conditions into just one main ruleset in the root of domain1, please post! I'm always keen to learn, this post is more my attempt to preserve this information for those who are looking to redirect entire domains for all visitors except themselves (for design/testing purposes) and not just denying specific file access for maintenance mode (there are many good examples of simple mod_rewrite rules for 'maintenance mode' style operation easily findable via Google). You can also extend the IP address detection - firstly by using wildcards ^10\.2\.2\..*: the last octet's \..* denotes the usual "." and then "zero or more arbitrary characters", signified by the .* - so you can specify specific ranges of IPs in a subnet or entire subnets if you wish. You can also use square brackets: ^10\.2\.[1-255]\.[120-140]; ^10\.2\.[1-9]?[0-9]\.; ^10\.2\.1[0-1][0-9]\. etc. The third way, if you wish to specify multiple discrete IP addresses, is to bracket them in the style of ^(1.1.1.1|2.2.2.2|3.3.3.3)$, and you can of course use square brackets to substitute octets or single digits again. NB: if you're using individual RewriteCond lines to specify multiple IPs / ranges, make sure to put [OR] at the end of each one otherwise mod_rewrite will interpret as "if IP address matches 1.1.1.1 AND if IP address matches 2.2.2.2... which is of course impossible! However as far as I'm aware this isn't necessary if you're using the ! negator to specify "and is not...". Kudos also to SE: this older question also came in useful when I was verifying my own knowledge prior to my futzing around with code.   • Best practices for team workflow with RoR/Github for designer + coder?

    My friend and I have started to try to collaborate on some projects. For background, I come from a PHP/Wordpress/Drupal coding background, but recently I've become more experienced with the RoR framework, while he is more experienced as an HTML/CSS designer, working with PHP and WordPress. We're both relatively new to RoR I think, and so we're trying to figure out our collaborative workflow, but we have no idea where to start. For instance, we were trying to figure out how he could do some minor edits to the CSS file without having to do a full RoR deploy on his box. We still haven't figured out a solution, so I think it's best if we start to set some sort of workflow based on best practices. I was wondering if you guys have any insight or links to articles/case studies regarding this topic?

  • 'Development dashboard' web application

    Hi all, I am not sure if something like this exists in that it is ready out of the box. I currently have some web space that I use for various projects, and I would like to setup an area for some friends and I to develop web applications together. My ideal setup would be to create a folder, say, webdev.domain.com. We could all go to this domain, login, and then be able to setup new applications, pick which language will be used, setup database tables, allow HTML based file uploading, and create sub-folders to basically have a test bed for the applications. In retrospect, it seems like I'm describing a limited version of cpanel. I could come up with something in Drupal I'm sure, but I don't want to have to really spend time configuring much. Like I said, I want to install it and have minimal configuration. Does something like this exist (preferably in open-source)?

    I am looking for a specific content management platform that would display themes for my application. Requirements are as folllows: Any user can upload content, but has to be approved by an administrator When the user uploads the content, an external application is called to generate a thumbnail I could create this using codeigniter or something, but I would much prefer to use an existing system. I have experience with Drupal (seems a little bloated for my needs), and Wordpress (I'm using it as main website right now). Maybe I need a plugin for WordPress instead of another CMS. WordPress currently blocks uploads of my file type. I can modify it, but it's a pain to update it every time WordPress has a new release.

The website can be accessed from http://xyz.com but the actual link is http://xyz.abc-def.com/root-folder. What is the domain name in this case? So what should be the name of the conf file then?

    I'm considering outsourcing a part of our web application development project for freelancers, namely the site building part. What I mean by site building is the process of creating the xhtml/css template files, with dummy content, from a psd file (or any other graphical layout file). The resulting xhtml/css files will be used by our developers as templates for cms based page rendering. The cms in this case is Drupal, but that might not be of much relevance. I'm looking for a good set of requirements, that will result in good quality xhtml/css code, complying with today's standards leaves little to the freelancer developer's imagination in terms of what I need I'm thinking about requirements like: Valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional document type, validated by validator.w3.org Identical rendering in all modern browsers (FF, Chrome, Safari, Opera, IE7-8) and also in IE6 All opening and closing block-level elements should be properly commented, referencing the functional part of the user interface they belong to (menu, toolbar, content, etc) No inline CSS definitions And so on. How would you organize a list like that? What requirements would you add?

  • Multi database link and mix and match email alert

    I have a site which is a large database of people that have different knowledge in different domains, such as teaching (maths, french, science etc...) On the site there is a page where you can search people base on different request, such as distance from home, grade, sex. Now, I would like to add a page where people that are looking for mentor will fill a request, and when a tutor in his area of search will match request, a email will be send to this researcher. Because I know for sure, that when in January you look for a math teacher for your 10 year old son, and you find none, you won't go again in February, March... and on and on just to see. Maybe there is one now, you want to be informed when the tutor will get into database automatically (more or less like www.jobboom.com) So the question is, what CMS do I need to be able to do that ? Wordpress, drupal or something custom made?

  • Effective template system

    I'm building a content management system, and need advice on which theming structure should I adopt. A few options (This is not a complete list): Wordpress style: the controller decides what template to load based on the user request, like: home page / article archive / single article page etc. each of these templates are unrelated to other templates, and must exist within the theme the theme developer decides if (s)he want to use inner-templates (like "sidebar", "sidebar item"), and includes them manually where (s)he thinks are needed. Drupal style: the controller gives control to the theme developer only to inner-templates; if they don't exist it falls back internally to some default templates (I find this very restrictive) Funky style: the controller only loads a "index.php" template and provides the theme developer conditional tags, which he can use to include inner-templates if (s)he wants. Among these styles, or others what style of template system allows for fast development and a more concise design and implementation.

    My goal of learning HTML and CSS is to be able to modify popular scripts such as Wordpress, vBulletin, Drupal, etc. I haven't started yet learning CSS and HTML or XHTML. I see many, many books and tutorials out there so it is difficult to make a choice. I think most of web designers were like me in the past and have read many books. So, could you tell me about 1 good book for HTML and 1 good book for CSS? and if I should read the book from cover to cover or only learning the basics is enough for modifying Wordpress, for example!

  • How can I recursively change the permissions of files and directories?

    I have ubuntu installed on my local computer with apache / php / mysql. I now have a directory at /var/www - inside which I have several of my ongoing projects. I also work with opensource ( drupal, magento, sugarcrm ). The problem I am facing is changing file permission with terminal. Sometime I need to change the permission of entire folder and its subsequent sub-folders and files. I have to individually change using sudo chmod 777 foldername How can I do this recursively. Also why do I have to always do it 777, I tried 755 for folders and 644 for files, but that won't work.

  • Editable block: CMS or PHP script?

    I'm designing a Website for a restaurant. The site will be fairly static except for a 'specials' block which the client will need to update on a daily basis. I'm more of a designer/front-end developer so I was wondering if I was better off trying to make a block editable in PHP (a language I hardly ever deal with) or just create the website in a user-friendly CMS such as Wordpress (which I have some experience with) or Expression Engine (which I have no experience with but I'm told is a favorite in the design community)... certainly not Drupal, because even though I have theming experience with it, I think it would be a little overkill for just one editable block in a five-page site. I'm leaning towards an easy to use CMS because I'm really just not comfortable writing my own PHP especially since I guess a PHP solution would also require an authentication solution so only the client could get in to edit their info. Any insight would be appreciated!
