• Strange sound from Laptop, Microphone, Speakers or Soundcard?

  I have recently purchased a second hand computer. There didn't seem to be anything wrong with it on purchasing, however recently I have noticed a small issue. Any time I play sound or listen through my headphones, I can hear what seems to be the CPU working (ie when beginning a new task, there is a small crackling). Also if I tap my laptop I can hear the sound louder, as if it is being picked up by the mic and then playing that sound in real time through the speakers or headphones. I have tried reading other topics but cannot find an answer to this question. These are the specs I am running on; Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit Pentium Dual Core CPU T4300 @ 2.10Ghz 2.10Ghz I hope someone can help me with this issue, it would be much appreciated.

• Snow Leopard Hangs at Login Window

  I've had an issue for the past few months, but I rarely restart so it hasn't caused too much trouble. Basically, when I start up my Mac (iMac10,1 - 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, OS X 10.6.3) everything proceeds as usual until I reach the login window. The login window displays normally, but keyboard and mouse input seem to be ignored. This condition persists for around 5 minutes at which time everything goes back to normal. While the login window is frozen my second monitor appears entirely blue, the second monitor receives a background as soon as the login window becomes responsive. If I startup while holding SHIFT the problem still occurs, but the freeze is much shorter. Looking through my logs I see no activity during the time that the login window is frozen. I've attempted to repair disk permissions, and gone through every possible maintenance option in Cocktail.

  Recently I've been using my CPU a lot more for gaming, and as of two days ago, my computer had just been shutting off suddenly with no warning. I'm inclined to believe I need a new heatsink and cooling fan system. (Correct me if I am wrong.) Now I went around to BestBuy and Staples to purchase a new one, but both places instructed me to look online. Now I am posed with a problem. • Adobe Reader - Content Preparation progress

  Hello, I was wondering recently if is it just me or anyone else noticed it: why Adobe Reader after opening every single document displays "Content preparation" window with progress bar and it lasts for ages.. ? On linux pdf readers work hell lot better (faster), on windows other readers also work faster. Some years back in the past Adobe Reader also used to be quick. What has happened? PDF files aren't bigger/more complex compared to 3-4 years ago. Computers are at least dual core and with much more ram and displaying pdf files is getting slower and slower..

• Using 64 bit wuauclt from 32 bit command prompt

  I have a script that for legacy reasons needs to run inside a 32 bit command shell. This script also includes references to certain core windows binaries - most notably wuauclt but others as well - which are not accessible by default within the 32 bit environment. This script is being run in several locations including many windows 7 and server 2008 r2 boxes. I'm aware of the possibility to copy files from the system32 to syswow64 in order to get around this. Is there any better method - something along the lines of adding an entry to the path variable - which will allow me to fall back to these 64 bit binaries from within a 32 bit script?

• RAID--0 " TWO " DRIVES SSD ONLY Should I use on-board / Software RAID OR a RAID Card / Control

  I am looking at going with a TWO Drive Only SSD RAID-0 Configuration And was wondering if I would get better performance / Speed from the Use of a RAID Controller / Card Verses just using the Software RAID on my Mother Board. I have herd conflicting reports , Again I only Plan on Running " 2 " SSD Drives in RAID-0 Config I have No- problem spending the extra money for a good controller but only if I am going to benifit performance wise , Otherwise if there is no notable Gain I will just use the Software RAID that my HP-180-T came with Intel- 3.33 GHZ , 6-Core , 12-GB of DDR-3. I have a huge External drive for All Storage and am not concerned about Data loss just looking for pure speed. And if a Controller will benifit my performance Wht type of card would one suggest?

• CHROOT for shell script testing

  I am looking at setting up a shell script in order to properly document and automate the process I am using to setup a few servers we have. In order to test the shell script through its different stages I was thinking a CHROOT would be ideal, since I can wipe out the "virtual root" and create it on the fly. I have never used CHROOT before, however. I was just curious what are the exact steps I would need to follow to implement this process of creating a chroot (with the basic core functions that would be needed to install apache/php/etc.)? and then destroying it?

• VMware Fusion / New Machine / verify VMs?

  I just got a 15" MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM, 2.66 i7 and 500GB SSD. Very sweet and fast! My old machine was 2.66 Core 2 Duo. I used Migration Assistant to migrate my old MBP to the new. When I started VMware to run Windows and Ubuntu I got the message first This VM has been moved or copied to a new machine. Did you move or copy it? I answered Copied. Then I got the message this CPU is a different configuration than the machine that created the VM. You may get unpredictable results. I answered Open Anyway. Windows XP, Windows 7, and Ubuntu all seem to work OK, but how can I verify? Is there some form of test harness for a VM? I have had a VM degrade and become unusable with very catastrophic data loss (on Parallels...), so I am a bit paranoid. Thanks,

• laptop suddenly became very slow

  I have a compaq laptop. And I've been using it 2 years now. Then this day, it suddenly became very slow. It almost took 5 minutes from turning on to the log on screen. I click my username and it took 3 minutes to show the desktop. I click on my computer then properties to see if it is still showing 2 Ghz for the Core 2 duo processor. And 2gb for the memory. It took 10 minutes for all the information to show up. And its still 2gb and 2Ghz. So I may conclude that this is not a problem in memory or cpu. Its still running perfectly last night. And I have not seen signs of it failing. Things I already tried: Rebooting Shutdown then turn on again So how do I determine what causes this problem? How do I fix it?

• IBM Server searching for secondary server

  I just bought the following server IBM System x3950 Server, 4 x 3.0GHz Dual Core, 32GB, 6 x 73.4GB 10K SAS RAID, 256MB BBWC, 2x Power, CD-RW/DVD When i boot it up, it says "Searching for secondary server" and hangs their for almost 10 mins. After 10 mins, it says timeout on searching chassis 2. But after this it proceed to boot the OS properly. But my frustration, i need to wait for almost 15 mins to boot everytime. How do i prevent this error message.

• Computer turns off and on after start ..then goes dead

  I built a new PC from the following components: - CPU: Intel Core i7 950 - MB: Gigabyte X58A-UD3R - RAM: 2x2gb i7 Corsair memory - VGA: Zotac AMP2 GTX260 - HDD: 1 GreenSATA HDD (Western Digital 500gb RE2) When I turn it on, it goes for a few seconds, fans at maximum speed, then turns off. The again, it starts by itself.. and goes with fans on max speed, nothing happens. First I suspected my PSU. It's a Chieftec 450AA PSU. After I borrowed a Chieftec 550AA PSU, I tried to start with that. Exact same story. Any idea ? Do I need a bigger PSU? Reason why its not localized. I never seen this turn on, off, on. If you give answer for that, it would already help people like me, with the same problem.

• Suspected power supply issue? PC repeatedly whirs for some seconds and then dies.

  I've come home today and switched on the PC I've built a few months ago only for the machine to whir for a few short seconds and then die. It repeats this until I disconnect the power lead. Nothing is output to the screen and this cut out happens very quickly after switching it on. What could this be and how could it be fixed? Is it the power supply? I'm in despair :-( My spec is below, everything is new and was bought and assembled within the last 6months, system has been fantastic until now.   I am about to purchase a laptop and have zeroed on the following two of them. Toshiba L500-ST2544 Toshiba L505-ES5034 The Common Specification for both of them are as follows - RAM - 4GB DDR3 Memory HDD - 320 GB Processor - Intel® Core™ i3-330M Processor WebCam and Mic - Available HDMI Port - Available Numeric Key Pad - Available Windows 7 (64 bit) Home Premium Now, the only difference between ST2544 and ES5034 is that, the ST2544 has a maximum of 2 slots with 2 GB in each. So, you can have a max of 4 GB RAM in that. The ES5034 can support 8 GB RAM, so, in a couple of years, if I want to add another 4 GB RAM I will be able to do it. The price for ST2544 is USD 629.00 whereas, the price for a ES5034 is USD685. A difference is USD 55.00 (not a major amount, but still something extra). Is it worthwhile going for the ES5034? Which Windows Operating System supports 8 GB of RAM?

• Apps not starting on Mac OS X Lion

  I have a strange problem, some apps that I download do not launch. There are 2 scenarios The application starts but keeps bouncing, once I click the bouncing icon in the tray it disappears. The process also closes in activity monitor The application fails to start, how ever many times I launch it, it refuses.   I am considering using Apache 32-bit for a Moodle installation on a Windows 2008 R2 64-bit/16GB server. Since the available memory affects the number of concurrent of users that can be served, I was wondering how the 2GB memory limit on 32-bit Windows processes affects Apache+PHP. Is it a collective limit for the whole server, or is it applied separately for each Apache child process/thread? If it is separate, how many of those children are launched on Windows? One per request? One per processor core? Something in the middle? Is this somehow configurable?

• Choosing a home network layout

  I have a server, 4 PC's, a network printer, a switch and an ADSL modem. Currently the server runs Red Hat 9 and sits between the internet and the other PCs like in http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/12/Sample-network-diagram.png I have bought a new server PC to replace the old one, and I plan to install Fedora Core linux on it. The server acts as web and file server. The PCs all run Windows. Alternatively, I could connect the new server and all PCs to the switch, and connect the switch to the modem. (Sorry, couldn't find an image.) What are the pros and cons of these network layouts? Eg. in terms of reliability, security and flexibility? I am not a Linux guru but know of (and am not afraid of) iptables, dhcpd et al. Thank you for any tips, pointers and links.

• Computer Locks Up Completely When Resuming From Standby

  Okay, so I'm having a strange issue lately with my desktop, and off the top of my head I'm not sure what the problem is, so I'm hoping for some ideas on how to track down the cause. First, my PC: AMD Phenom 9600 Quad-Core 2.4 GHz 4 GB DDR2 160 GB boot HDD 1 TB & 120 GB secondary HDD Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS Windows 7 Professional 64-bit I have my power settings as follows: Turn off the display: 10 minutes Turn off hard disk: 20 minutes Sleep after: Never After a while, I'll come back to use my computer again, wiggle the mouse, and the screen comes back on like normal, but the desktop is unresponsive. I can move the cursor, but nothing responds to clicks or keyboard entry. If I click a few times with the mouse, the computer eventually locks up completely and the mouse cursor stops moving as well. After I restart, everything works just fine. Is there a log you recommend checking or really any suggestions would be welcome at this point. Thanks!

  I have a HP pavillion core 2 duo 2 GHz and 4 GB RAM, and it is painful to use this machine for any kind of coding. Eclipse (especially Juno) literally takes 5 minutes to load. And even after that, everything is lagy. Apart from school stuff, I also use my computer as a television. I watch Hulu, Netflix, YouTube etc in 720p, and this laptop gets hot as hell and the fans are loud enough to wake somebody up from deep sleep. I DON'T use my laptop for Gaming or Video/Photo Editing. I'm looking to buy a new laptop (in which most widely used IDEs would work smoothly and playing hi-def videos wouldn't be too much for the machine to handle) any suggestions (on hardware specs) would be greatly appreciated. • What version of Windows Server 2008 to Get

  One of the projects I'm working on is looking like we're going to need to migrate from CentOS 5.4 over to something else (we need to run Postgresql 8.3+, and CentOS/RHEL only support 8.1), and one of the options will be Windows Server. Since 2008 R2 is out that's what I'm looking at. I'll need to run Postgres and Tomcat and don't really require anything that Windows has like IIS (if I can run Server Core, even better!). The other kicker is it will be virtualized through VMWare ESXI 4.0 so that we have three separate boxes: development, Quality, and Production servers. From a licensing standpoint though, and I good enough with just the Web Server edition? Am I right in assuming that will be three licenses? Or should I just jump up to Enterprise so that I get 4 VM licenses?

  I'm running an ASP.NET MVC 3 application on an IIS 7.5 server (my development server). When I set up my production server something goes wrong. Serving the same application binaries, using the same web.config file and connecting to the same database I get different results. Something must be wrong with my IIS configuration, but what? Here's an example I visit http://mysite.com/An/AspNetMvc/Routed/Address/1 and everything works I visit http://mysite.com/An/AspNetMvc/Routed/Address/1.1 works on my development server but not on my production server which gives the following error HTTP Error 404.0 - Not Found The resource you are looking for has been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Module IIS Web Core Notification MapRequestHandler Handler StaticFile Error Code 0x80070002 Somehow the URL is served as a static file on my production server which led me to investigate my IIS Handler Mappings, but without luck.

• rsync to cifs mount but preserve permissions

  I'm backing up a linux server to a windows share. I'm currently mounting the windows share with cifs and using rsync for incremental backups. File permissions and ownership are not being preserved, as should be expected after reading this samba document: The core CIFS protocol does not provide unix ownership information or mode for files and directories. Because of this, files and directories will generally appear to be owned by whatever values the uid= or gid= options are set, and will have permissions set to the default file_mode and dir_mode for the mount. How can I achieve my goal of preserving unix file permissions while writing to a windows share? Is there another network file system that would allow me to do this? Thanks.

• md5sum of large files gives different results sometimes

  I have an AMD quad core, 8 gb RAM, 1 SSD EXT2 (2 months old), 2 HDD EXT4, approximately 1 year old. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 x86-64 and when I compute the md5sum of large files (9 GB) sometimes I get different values than the one stored on a reference file. Upon restarting and switching off the PC then I get the expected results no matter how many times I repeat it. But this is random. I've turn on ECC (the fastest possible settings) and the issue seems to be rarer, but I've run memtest86+ for 6+ hours without a glitch (and with ECC off!). Any idea? Should I update the BIOS of my motherboard (Asus EVO-something...don't remember it now)? I've tried all the rest apart this, but genuinely don't know what to do anymore... Any suggestion is appreciated!
