• CURL alternative - Design ideas

  All, I am looking for some web application design ideas here. I have a server X that hosts an SDK, which has the capacity to talk a piece of hardware. When I make an HTTPS request from an external PHP web application (hosted on Server Y) to Server X through curl, Server X gives JSON data as a response. I use this data to render my UI for the web app on Server Y. The above method seems to be slow and has a tendency to fail in production if there are too many concurrent requests. Can anybody let me know if there is an alternative to CURL or any other design people are using to pull data like this from servers? Thanks

• Should I uniform different API calls to a single format before caching?

  The problem is that I am recreating the social media widget/icons on http://about.me/bluedaniel (thats me). Anyhow there can be up to 6 or 7 different API calls on the page and obviously I am caching them, at the moment with Memcached. The question is, as they arrive in various formats and sizes (fb-json, linkedin-xml, wordpress-rss etc), should I universally format/convert them before storing it in the cache. At present I have recreated the html widget and then stored that, but I worry about saving huge blocks of html in the cache as it doesn't seem that smart.

  I am trying to write a query that includes 2 joins. 1 StoryTemplate can have multiple Stories 1 Story can have multiple StoryDrafts I am starting the query on the StoryDrafts object because that is where it's linked to the UserId. I don't have a reference from the StoryDrafts object directly to the StoryTemplates object. • Do you use an architectural framework for Flex/AIR development?

  Given that Flex is still a relatively young technology, there are already a bunch of architectural frameworks available for Flex/AIR (and Flash) development, the main ones being Cairngorm and PureMVC. The amount of architectural frameworks is remarkable compared to other technologies. I was wondering how many of you use an architectural framework for Flex development. If so, why, or why not if you don't use any? To share my own experience and point of view: I have used Cairngorm (and ARP for Flash development) on a variety of projects and found that at times, we needed to write extra code just to fit into the framework, which obviously didn't feel right. Although I haven't used PureMVC on many occasions, I have the same gut feeling after looking at the examples applications. Architectural frameworks equal religion in some way. Most followers are convinced that their framework is THE framework and are not open or very skeptical when it comes to using other frameworks. (I also find myself hesitant and skeptical to check out new frameworks, but that is mainly because I would rather wait until the hype is over.) In conclusion, I'm thinking that it is better to have a sound knowledge of patterns and practices that you can apply in your application instead of choosing a framework and sticking to it. There is simply no right or wrong and I don't believe that there will ever be a framework that is considered the holy grail.

• Which PHP MVC Framework should I use with MongoDB?

  I have a number of smaller scale PHP projects lined up and would like to take advangtage of a framework. I've read these questions ... What PHP framework would you choose for a new application and why? Picking a PHP MVC Framework I found them useful but I need more specific opinions; here are my major requirements ... MongoDB support (the more 'built-in' the better, a full ORM is not needed however.) MVC (and nice pretty urls ... if you will ... too!) Must work on Apache (2.2) on Ubuntu (10.04.1 LTS), but nginx is also a nice plus. PHP 5.3 or greater. Nice to haves ... I'd prefer more readable code than lots of "shortcut" shorthand coding (that just ends up confusing me later.) I've used PHP for a number of years, but don't use a lot of it's OO (nor do I really care to.) I really love jQuery, so a framework that "thinks" the same way would be nice. Lightweight, I don't need a ton of features ... I just need to make my life easier. I've briefly looked at Lithium, CakePHP, Vork and Symfony ... What would be the best framework for my needs? EDIT: Also docs are pretty important, documentaction with examples! I can't stand to waste time figuring how to use a framework if it would have taken less time to code it myself.

• Converting a Visual Studio 2003 Web Project to a Visual Studio 2008 Web Application Project

  This walkthrough describes how to convert a Visual Studio .NET 2002 or Visual Studio .NET 2003 Web project to a Visual Studio 2008 Web application project. The Visual Studio 2008 Web application project model is like the Visual Studio 2005 Web application project model. Therefore, the conversion processes are similar. For more information about Web application projects, see ASP.NET Web Application Projects. You can also convert from a Visual Studio .NET Web project to a Visual Studio 2008 Web site project. However, conversion to a Web application project is the approach that is supported, and gives you the convenience of tools to help with the conversion. For example, when you convert to a Visual Studio 2008 Web application project, you can use the Visual Studio Conversion Wizard to automate part of the process. For information about how to convert a Visual Studio .NET Web project to a Visual Studio 2008 Web site, see Common Web Project Conversion Issues and Solutions. There are two parts involved in converting a Visual Studio 2002 or 2003 Web project to a Visual Studio 2008 Web application project. The parts are as follows: Converting the project. You can use the Visual Studio Conversion Wizard for the initial conversion of the project and Web.config files. You can later use the Convert To Web Application command to update the project's files and structure. Upgrading the .NET Framework version of the project. • Never getting a JSON response when running server-side PHP proxy script but I do with others

  I'm on PHP 5.3.4 and Apache 2.2 btw So I'm using (or trying to use) Simple PHP Proxy (Simple PHP Proxy) I enter a URL at his example page at SPP Example Page and it works fine, I see the JSON response and all the headers. However, when I copy the exact URL, only changing the URL to now have localhost, I get both empty headers and no JSON. Assuming that the script on his site is the same I downloaded, could this be due to a multitude of things or a setting in Apache and/or the PHP ini? So for example: benalman.com/code/projects/php-simple-proxy/ba-simple-proxy.php?url=http://github.com/&full_headers=1&full_status=1 That will get me a ton of info back Now changing to localhost http://localhost/ba-simple-proxy.php?url=http://github.com/&full_headers=1&full_status=1 {"headers":[],"status":{"url":"https:\/\/github.com\/","content_type":"text\/html","http_code":301,"header_size":194,"request_size":182,"filetime":-1,"ssl_verify_result":0,"redirect_count":1,"total_time":0.094,"namelookup_time":0,"connect_time":0.047,"pretransfer_time":0,"size_upload":0,"size_download":185,"speed_download":1968,"speed_upload":0,"download_content_length":185,"upload_content_length":0,"starttransfer_time":0,"redirect_time":0.047,"certinfo":[]},"contents":null} I even went basic and just used some curl and of course, empty objects being returned other than false for my content and the url I set in my JSON. • How to update correctly an Entity Model after changes of database structure?

  I've made some changes in the table structure and especially the relationships between tables in my SQL Server database. Now I want to update my Entity model based on this new database structure. Right clicking on the edmx file I find the option "Update model from database". But when I do this I get kind of a 50% update: The new columns appear in the Entity classes but I am confused about a lot of navigation properties which are still there in the model although the corresponding foreign key relationships do not exist anymore in the database. Am I doing something wrong? Or is there another option to update the model including deletion of navigation properties? Or do I have to delete those navigation properties manually in the model files? I am using Entity Framework Version 1 (VS 2008 SP1). Thanks for help in advance!

  Hi, On a webserver (shared hosting provider) I published a website with a ADO.Net Framework model in use with MySql Connector 6.3.1. When I request a page, a Security Exception will be happen with this error messages: "LinkDemand The type of the first permission that failed was: System.Security.Permissions.SecurityPermission The Zone of the assembly that failed was: MyComputer ". This exception raised when code collect the listeners of a tracksource: public class MySqlTrace { private static TraceSource source = new TraceSource("mysql"); static MySqlTrace() { foreach (TraceListener listener in source.Listeners) // <-- Exception throw here { // ... } } } The web.config doesn't have any trace data or system.diagnostics. My question is, why will a get a LinkDemand security exception during collecting the source listeners. What can maybe be wrong in here?

  Hi, everybody! Currently in our project we are using Entity Framework and LINQ. We want to create a search feature where the Client fills different filters but he isn't forced to. To do this "dynamic" query in LINQ, we thought about using the Like operator, searching either for the field, or "%" to get everything if the user didn't fill that field. The joke's on us when we discovered it didn't support Like. After some searching, we read several answers where it's sugested to use StartsWith, but it's useless for us. Is the only solution using something like: ObjectQuery<Contact> contacts = db.Contacts; if (pattern != "") { contacts = contacts.Where(“it.Name LIKE @pattern”); contacts.Parameters.Add(new ObjectParameter(“pattern”, pattern); } However, we'd like to stick with linq only.   Is there a way in Zend Framework to fill a combobox with values depending on the value chosen in a previous combobox, but on the same page? In my case I have a combobox for domain and one for specialization. If i choose Informatics in the first combobox (domain), I want to fill the second one with a single specialization - "Informatics". Currently, a zero is displayed in the Year textbox because the Year property does not allow NULL. I would like to display an empty textbox in the Create view. How do I do this?

I have a Browser class that has functions to check if the user's browser is compatible with application or not. My dilemma is, index.php is executed for every controller call. So there are chances that this file gets executed multiple times within the same page and hence redirection becomes an issue. What's the best way to solve the looping issue? Thanks

• Win CE 6.0 client using WCF Services

  We have a Win CE 6.0 device that is required to consume services that will be provided using WCF. We are attempting to reduce bandwidth usage as much as possible and with a simple test we have found that using UDP instead of HTTP saved significant data usage. I understand there are limitations regarding WCF on .NET Compact Framework 3.5 devices and was curious what people thought would be the appropriate way forward. Would it make sense to develop a custom UDP binding, and would that work for both sides? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

• running VisualStudio CF3.5 apps on WINCE

  Hi, I am trying to write a program for a chinese PNA device with wince 5.0. But everytime I write a simple program in VS8 with C# and 'deploy' it to my device it just doesn't run. First it complains about disposing an object call menu, although I don't want an menu but VS8 just creates one for me. If I delete the menu from the form the program gives an exception. I installed a program call MIOPocket on the PNA with has powertoys some games and MS media player. It also creates a directory .net framework 3.5 so I known 3.5 is installed and must be working. But I think I am missing something. I am also not sure what to choice as target device ; windows mobile or WINCE. If I click the .exe file under win7 it works but under wince its a no go. Maybe someone has a clue what is going wrong ?

  There are plenty of PHP frameworks out there as many of you know, and I am interested in your thoughts on this: Zend Framework has so-called action controllers that must contain at least one action method, a method whose name ends in "Action". For example: public function indexAction() {} The word "Action" is important, without it you can't access the method directly via the URI. However, in some other frameworks like Kohana you have public and private methods, where public methods are accessible and private are not. So my question is which do you think is a better approach? From a secure point of view I would vote Zend's approach, but I am interested in knowing what others think.

So my question is simple, are WCF Data Services designed to be used via clients? Or has anyone ever heard of someone using them on the server side? Simple scenario a general layered architecture using BO business objects (parenthesis indicate what is being passed between layers) (XML) WCF Service - (BO)Business Logic - (BO) Dao - Entity Framework or using data services it would be where DS BO are modeled business entities to be used in data service. (XML) WCF Service -(BO) Business Logic - (BO) WCF Data Service - (DS BO)Server I can't see a use for the later, unless there are going to be a lot of cases people would be accessing your data via your Data Service Layer vs the Service layer? Thoughts anyone? I have not seen any mention of using DS from within a Service Layer....

• Problem creating ObjectContext from different project inside solution.

  I have two projects in my Solution. One implements my business logic and has defined entity model of entity framework. When I want to work with classes defined within this project from another project I have some problems in runtime. Actually, the most concerning thing is why I can not instantiate my, so called, TicketEntities(ObjectContext) object from other projects? when I catch following exception: The specified named connection is either not found in the configuration, not intended to be used with the EntityClient provider, or not valid. I found out it's brake at: public partial class TicketEntities : global::System.Data.Objects.ObjectContext { public TicketEntities() : base("name=TicketEntities", "TicketEntities") { this.OnContextCreated(); } with exception: Unable to load the specified metadata resource. Just to remind you everthing works fine from orginal project.

• PHP CLI version issue

  I am trying to use Zend Tool on my media temple Grid Server account. The problem is that the installed CLI version of PHP is 4.4.8 and Zend Framework needs PHP5. On an account basis its possible to choose PHP 4 or 5 but not so for CLI. Its possible to globally select to use PHP5 by using the extension .php5 but in the case of Zend Tool which is called by a shell script zf.sh i'm not sure what options i have. PHP5 is on the server at /usr/bin/php5 and someone at MT has suggested creating an alias so php=/usr/bin/php5 but i'm not sure that will work. Any ideas?

• ASP.Net RADs: Dynamic Data alternatives

  Hi Guys! We have a set of tables and views that merely store some config data for embedded devices. this schema is change-prone and do not really required lots of logic, beyond some validation rules. so we considered using a RAD tool for maintaining these CRUDS. In first stage: Dynamic Data But the community size, books absence and the last modification dates of the MSDN articles (~July 2008) makes me want to hear your experiences. (actually DynamicData comes as a part of the ASP.Net MVC2 project) What has been your experience with Dynamic Data? And... What is your favorite ASP.Net RAD alternative? Why? Thank you in advance guys! PD: Entity framework friendliness is a bonus : )
