• Interpreting Others' Source Code

  Note: I am aware of this question. This question is a bit more specific and in-depth, however, focusing on reading the actual code rather than debugging it or asking the author. As a student in an introductory-level computer science class, my friends occasionally ask me to help them with their assignments. Programming is something I'm very proud of, so I'm always happy to oblige. However, I usually have difficulty interpreting their source code. Sometimes this is due to a strange or inconsistent style, sometimes it's due to strange design requirements specified in the assignment, and sometimes it's just due to my stupidity. In any case, I end up looking like an idiot staring at the screen for several minutes saying "Uh..." I usually check for the common errors first - missing semicolons or parentheses, using commas instead of extractor operators, etc. The trouble comes when that fails. I often can't step through with a debugger because it's a syntax error, and I often can't ask the author because he/she him/herself doesn't understand the design decisions. How do you typically read the source code of others? Do you read through the code from top-down, or do you follow each function as it's called? How do you know when to say "It's time to refactor?"

• How Often Do Windows Servers Need to be Restarted?

  A little background: We have several Windows servers (2003, 2008) for our department. We're a division of IT so we manage our own servers. Of the four of us here I'm the only one with a slight amount of IT knowledge. (Note the "slight amount".) My boss says the servers need to be restarted at least weekly. I disagree. Our IT Department says that because she restarts them constantly that's the reason why our hard drives fail and power supplies go out on them. (That's happened to a few of our servers a couple times over the last four years, and very recently.) So the question is: How often does everyone restart their Windows servers? Is there an industry standard or recommendation? Is our IT department correct in saying that because we re-start that's why we're having hardware issues? (I need a reason if I'm going to change her mind!)

• GMail, IMap and Outlook: Speeding it up?

  I finally set up Outlook to use GMail and IMAP, but unfortunately, it's extremely slow. The reason, I think for this is because I have 14300 emails in my inbox. And I have no intention to delete them. So, my questions are: Is there a way to archive old messages, in order to speed things up? Any other suggestions on how I can speed it up? Note: It's only really slow when I click on "Send and Receive". The actual synchronization is what takes forever.

• Change location of RSS Dynamic Desktops

  I'm currently using CCleaner to take care of my computer, but I also have a dynamic desktop background provided by Bing (I'm running Windows 7 HP) - and unfortunately the two conflict. Whenever I 'clean' my computer using CCleaner it messes up my destop backgrounds as they are stored in the temporary internet files directory, and for some reason I don't appear to be able to get as far as the 'Enclosures' sub directory in order to tell CCleaner to exclude the directory (I can see it in Windows Explorer but not in CCleaner's directory browser). Therefore, I am looking for an alternative solution to this problem and wondered if I could change the directory to which the images were downloaded on the RSS feed. If anybody knows how to do this, I would be grateful if you could share or indeed, I would be equally as greatful if anyone knows any other ways of getting around CCleaner. Please note that I don't want to stop cleaning the whole of my temporary internet files though - I just don't want the wallpapers that have been downloaded to be deleted... Thanks in advance!

• Enabling support of EUS and Fusion Apps in OUD

  Since the 11gR2 release, OUD supports Enterprise User Security (EUS) for database authentication and also Fusion Apps. I'll plan to blog on that soon. Meanwhile, the R2 OUD graphical setup does not let you configure both EUS and FusionApps support at the same time. However, it can be done manually using the dsconfig command line. The simplest way to proceed is to select EUS from the setup tool, then manually add support for Fusion Apps using dsconfig using the commands below: - create a FA workflow element with eusWfe as next element: dsconfig create-workflow-element \           --set enabled:true \           --set next-workflow-element:Eus0 \           --type fa \           --element-name faWfe - modify the workflow so that it starts from your FA workflow element instead of Eus: dsconfig set-workflow-prop \           --workflow-name userRoot0 \           --set workflow-element:faWfe  Note: the configuration changes may slightly differ in case multiple databases/suffixes are configured on OUD.

• Which approach would lead to an API that is easier to use?

  I'm writing a JavaScript API and for a particular case, I'm wondering which approach is the sexiest. Let's take an example: writing a VideoPlayer, I add a getCurrentTime method which gives the elapsed time since the start. The first approach simply declares getCurrentTime as follows: getCurrentTime():number where number is the native number type. This approach includes a CURRENT_TIME_CHANGED event so that API users can add callbacks to be aware of time changes. Listening to this event would look like the following: myVideoPlayer.addEventListener(CURRENT_TIME_CHANGED, function(evt){ console.log ("current time = "+evt.getDispatcher().getCurrentTime()); }); The second approach declares getCurrentTime differently: getCurrentTime():CustomNumber where CustomNumber is a custom number object, not the native one. This custom object dispatches a VALUE_CHANGED event when its value changes, so there is no need for the CURRENT_TIME_CHANGED event! Just listen to the returned object for value changes! Listening to this event would look like the following: myVideoPlayer.getCurrentTime().addEventListener(VALUE_CHANGED, function(evt){ console.log ("current time = "+evt.getDispatcher().valueOf()); }); Note that CustomNumber has a valueOf method which returns a native number that lets the returned CustomNumber object being used as a number, so: var result = myVideoPlayer.getCurrentTime()+5; will work! So in the first approach, we listen to an object for a change in its property's value. In the second one we directly listen to the property for a change on its value. There are multiple pros and cons for each approach, I just want to know which one the developers would prefer to use!

• Efficient mapping layout in 2D side-scroller, and collisions between character and the world

  I haven't touched Visual Studio for a couple months now, but I was playing a game from the '90s toady and had an epiphany: I was looking for something what i didn't need, and I wasn't using what I knew correctly. One of those realizations was collision, so let me tell you a bit about my project that I was working on. The project's graphics looks like Mario or Dangerous Dave, etc., you get the idea - old-school pixels. So anyway I remember trying to think of something else than AABB for character form, but I couldn't think of anything. Perhaps I could get a suggestion for this? Another thing is the world - I don't want it to be just linear world, I want mountains, etc.. My idea is to use triangles, and no idea yet what to do if I want just part of the cube, say 3/4 or 2/4 or whatever. Hard-coding such things seems inefficient. P.S. I am not looking at the precision level offered by Box2D. Actually I remember trying to implement it at first, but I failed as my understanding of C++ wasn't advanced enough, as it'll be mentioned below. P.P.S. I am programming in C++, and I haven't done it for a couple months now. I have no means of testing it either, as my PC is broken down, and this one can barely run games from late '90s, not to speak about a compiler or a program with inefficient resource management... I am also not an expert (obviously), I don't even know if I can consider myself an average programmer. In short, I am simply curious about my thoughts and my past experience when programming the game. I may come back to it when my PC is fixed, I'm already filling a note about these things.

• Cutting users off in Windows console sessions

  I'm currently working in a company where many of us log onto hosts/servers under Windows Server 2008 via console session. If one person is logged on and another tries it causes the person who was logged on first (and maybe doing something important) to be cut off. Is there such a thing as an application for such events where before logging on people can see if any other IP address is controlling the host/server? Also, if the person on the console session had the ability to leave a note for anybody thinking of taking over the session of when they are finished etc.. I have many other ideas for such things but could someone tell me if such an application exists?

• Oracle JDK 7u10 released with new security features

  A few days ago, we released JRE and JDK 7 update 10. This release adds support for the following new platforms: Windows 8 on x86-64. Note that Modern UI (aka Metro) mode is not supported. Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8. Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) This release also introduces new features that provide enhanced security for Java applet and webstart applications, specifically: The Java runtime tracks if it is updated to the latest security baseline. If you try to execute an unsigned applet with an outdated version of Java, a warning dialog will prompt you to update before running the applet. The Java runtime includes a hardcoded best before date. It is assumed that a new version will be released before this date. If the client has not been able to check for an update prior to this date, the Java runtime will assume that it is insecure and start warning the user prior to executing any applets. The Java control panel now includes an option to set the desired security level on a low-medium-high-very high scale, as well as an option to disable Java applets and webstart entirely. This level controls things such as if the Java runtime is allowed to execute unsigned code, and if so what type of warning will be displayed to the user.   I come from a part of the world where the average Hollywood movie is released a year + later than in US. For example: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will be released only 5-6 months down the lane. The Reader, I think will not be released at all. Is this a right justification for me to download movies from the torrent networks and watch them? Even if I don’t share it? P.S I don’t think my country has all these American type cyber laws to catch me. It’s just the guilt feeling. Note: SuperUser is not a legal resource.

• Google Search w/ Chrome Incognito w/ Gnome Do

  I've installed Google Chrome as my default browser in Ubuntu, and recently installed Gnome Do and enabled the Google Search plugin. The Google Search from Gnome Do works exactly as expected but for one thing: Chrome (which is typically set to open in "incognito" mode) does not open in "incognito" mode. The shortcuts on my desktop, taskbar, and menus all have the --incognito flag attached (which works just fine), but the browser refuses to open in this mode when launched from Gnome Do. Any suggestions? Also, please note the settings for the Google Search plugin in Gnome Do: It's obvious that Gnome Do just passes the Google Search blindly to the default browser. In other words, there are no configurable settings specifically for Chrome. Any thoughts?

• How do I use depth testing and texture transparency together in my 2.5D world?

  Note: I've already found an answer (which I will post after this question) - I was just wondering if I was doing it right, or if there is a better way. I'm making a "2.5D" isometric game using OpenGL ES (JOGL). By "2.5D", I mean that the world is 3D, but it is rendered using 2D isometric tiles. The original problem I had to solve was that my textures had to be rendered in order (from back to front), so that the tiles overlapped properly to create the proper effect. After some reading, I quickly realised that this is the "old hat" 2D approach. This became difficult to do efficiently, since the 3D world can be modified by the player (so stuff can appear anywhere in 3D space) - so it seemed logical that I take advantage of the depth buffer. This meant that I didn't have to worry about rendering stuff in the correct order. However, I faced a problem. If you use GL_DEPTH_TEST and GL_BLEND together, it creates an effect where objects are blended with the background before they are "sorted" by z order (meaning that you get a weird kind of overlap where the transparency should be). Here's some pseudo code that should illustrate the problem (incidentally, I'm using libgdx for Android). create() { // ... // some other code here // ... • why is usb disk corrupted by Vista restore

  I have a laptop with Vista Business on an 80GB disk. I have created a full backup and stored that on the original 80GB drive. On my new 320GB disk, I have created a partition with exactly the same number of bytes as the original 80GB disk. I swap the disks so that the 320GB is internal, and the 80GB is in a USB caddy. I boot from the NEO restore CD and everything looks fine: I select the dump on the USB drive, target is drive C:, start the restore. After a few seconds, the restore fails with "not enough disks in machine or disk not large enough" error (I did note the exact phrase). I then swap the 80GB disk back to the internal drive, but the thing is unbootable. Why has the restore process scrubbed the boot status of the USB drive ?

• Swap drive not operating correctly

  At first, I started seeing the warning signs. The halting pages. The molasses speed of the windows closing. The pictures not rendering. Then, I took action. Recently I added a swap drive to my computer. For a while, everything was good. Unicorns frolicked among the new bits and bytes resplendent on the shiny metal platter known as my swap drive. Today, I opened Chromium, and got on the 7th tab (start.csail.mit.edu) "He's dead, Jim!". This used to happen before I added my swap drive, but now I thought that it wouldn't happen because I added more memory. I fear for the safety of the unicorns. Please help me make my swap drive work again. • Using Superuser paths for specific topics

  I have a very specific question, which I have not been able to find the solution I want to search Superuser and other websites using Google, but I want to limit it to a specific subject (e.g. the R programming language). Using Superuser paths for specific topics like "site:http://superuser.com/questions/tagged/r" Does not work, as can be seen when comparing searching using full path compared to searching entire website with more specific question. Also note the first hit being one step in the direction i want, but since this path itself does not hold the questions in its path it does not solve my issue. There should however be a better way to do this, e.g. by having a very specific Google search tag for the R programming language, which would have to be either in the path, on the webpage, or tagged differently. Seeing as Superuser has a good tag system I am optimistic that this can be used to solve my question. Is there a solution to this that always works on Superuser and similar sites?

  I have two tightly coupled services that can run on completely different nodes (e.g. ServiceA and ServiceB). If I start up another replicated copy of both these services for backup purposes (ServiceA-2 and ServiceB-2), what would be the best way of setting up a fault tolerant distributed system such that on a fault in any of the tightly coupled services ServiceA or ServiceB the whole communication should go through backup ServiceA-2 and ServiceB-2? Overall, all the communication should go either through both services or their backup replicas. |---- Service A | | Service B | | (backup branch - used only on fault in Service A or B) ---- Service A-2 | Service B-2 Note that in case that Service A goes down, data from Service B would be incorrect (and vice versa). Load balancing between the primary and backup branch is also not feasible.

  I am on a Mac running Netbeans 6.9. I got a bug, and was not sure if it was because of faulty code or i was doing something wrong. • Cross-Platform Migration using Heterogeneous Data Guard

  Most people think of Data Guard as a disaster recovery solution, and it certainly excels in that role. However, did you know that you can also use Data Guard for platform migration under some conditions? While you would normally have your primary and standby Data Guard systems running on the same OS and hardware platform, there are some heterogeneous combinations of primary and stanby system that are supported by Data Guard Physical Standby. One example of heterogenous Data Guard support is the ability to go between Linux and Windows on many processor architectures. Another is the support for environments that are running HP-UX on both PA-RIsC and Itanium hardware. Brand new in 11.2.0.2 is the ability to have both SPARC Solaris and IBM AIX on Power Systems in the same Data Guard environment. See My Oracle Support note 413484.1 for all the details about supported platform combinations. So, why mention this in an upgrade blog? Simple: much of the time required for a platform migration is usually spent copying files from one system to another. If you are moving between systems that are supported by heterogenous Data Guard, then you can reduce that migration downtime to a matter of minutes. This can be a big win when downtime is at a premium (and isn't downtime always at a premium? In addition, you get the benefit of being able to keep the old and new environments synchronized until you are sure the migration is successful! • Best arguments for/against introducing ORM technology into a companies dev process

  I have started using ORM technology in the last few years. My first exposure was NHibernate. I then moved onto Linq 2 Sql, and Entity Framework. The issue I have however is, there are some organisations where I have found strong opposition to introducing ORM tools. They usually have a number of reasons: they have a lot of built up SQL skills in the team, and are worried about the underlying SQL that ORM's generate. they have DBA's who like to be able to see the SQL an app uses in order that can review it for best practice. they are worried about performance (some people have "heard" the ORM's aren't as performant but have no real proof themselves - there may well be some truth in this! :). So, I'm looking for the best or most convincing arguments that you have put forward FOR the use of ORM tools. Equally, I would be interested in the against arguments too. Note: this is NOT a discussion over which ORM I should use.
