• In what URL segment do you have language? /en/admin/dashboard or /admin/en/dashboard?

  maybe you are thinking that this is another dump question about language in URL, but I hope it is not! I've red many articles on this, but non of them was dealing with "sections of site" (described bellow). I am programming a new application platform in laravel/php and I am still not 100% convinced where to put language slug. There are many places where you can put it - some of them are better some are worse: example.com/en/article en.example.com/article example.com/article?lang=en My personal choice is to put language after the domain - so the first option in above list. But what if you are in some special secion like admin or api? where do you put language then? example.com/en/admin/dashboard example.com/en/api/v1/user/login or example.com/admin/en/dashboard example.com/api/v1/en/user/login (in frontend it is left the same: example.com/en/some-article) what do you preffer? what are cons and pros? One thing is using language in first segments is far more easier to programm than when it have some variants... P.S. whould you recoment using only en, cs or do it in full power with cz-CZ, en-US ? thanks for any thoughts! J.

• Twitter status id conundrum

  I have an interest, a slightly perverse one some might say, in using online services and trying to figure out what the underlying (logical) data model is and in this day and age Twitter is one that lends itself very well to scrutiny. Consider this recent tweet of mine: The URL that enables you to see that tweet is http://twitter.com/jamiet/status/12154647354. We can interpret that URL to mean "a tweet by jamiet with an id of 12154647354" and hence we might further assume that the unique identifier for the tweet is {jamiet,12154647354}. However, its well-known that Twitter gives each status a unique ID regardless of who tweeted it so we might expect we could reach that tweet just by using a URL of http://twitter.com/status/12154647354 however (at the time of writing) that only redirects to Twitter's homepage. That seems strange to me especially given that we can use Twitter's API to access information about that tweet using only the id of the status. Witness http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/show/12154647354.xml: [We can also access a JSON version of that information using http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/show/12154647354.json] I'm puzzled as to why a tweet can't be accessed using on the main twitter website using the id alone. Mainly useful for sites where you don't have this amount of rep, but want to check the stats of the more controversial questions (usually on meta) No API key is actually used here, but it's trivial to add one.   While it was very quiet here on my blog during the last months, this was not at all true for the rest of my professional life. The simple story is that I was too busy to find the time for authoring blog posts (and you might see from my previous ones that they’re usually not of the ‘Hey, I’m currently reading X’ or ‘I’m currently thinking about Y’ kind…). Anyway. Among the things I did during the last months were setting up a TFS environment (2010) and introducing a development team to the MSTest framework (aka. Visual Studio Unit Testing), some additional tools (e.g. Moq, Moles, White),  how this is supported in Visual Studio, and how it integrates into the broader context of the then new TFS environment. After wiping out all the stuff which was directly related to my former customer and reviewing/extending the Speaker notes, I thought I share this presentation (via Slideshare) with the rest of the world. • When too much encapsulation was reached

  Recently, I read a lot of gook articles about how to do a good encapsulation. And when I say "good encapsulation", I don't talk about hiding private fields with public properties; I talk about preventing users of your Api to do wrong things. Here is two good articles about this subject: http://blog.ploeh.dk/2011/05/24/PokayokeDesignFromSmellToFragrance.aspx http://lostechies.com/derickbailey/2011/03/28/encapsulation-youre-doing-it-wrong/ At my job, the majority a our applications are not destined to other programmers but rather to the customers. About 80% of the application code is at the top of the structure (Not used by other code). For this reason, there is probably no chance ever that this code will be used by other application. An example of encapsulation that prevent user to do wrong thing with your Api is to return an IEnumerable instead of IList when you don't want to give the ability to the user to add or remove items in the list. My question is: When encapsulation could be considered like too much of purism object oriented programming while keeping in mind that each hour of programming is charged to the customer? I want to do good code that is maintainable, easy to read and to use but when this is not a public Api (Used by other programmer), where could we put the line between perfect code and not so perfect code? • Scrum with Team Foundation Server 2010 Done

  Since I have joined SSW as a Solution Architect its Chief Architect, Adam Cogan, has been mentoring me and pushing me to do better. One of the things that I have been wanting to do since the first DDD Scotland was to present a session. For DDD Scotland 2010 Adam suggested that I submit he double session on “Better project Management with Team Foundation Server 2010”. So, with some apprehension I submitted two session as Part A and Part B. Download DDD Scotland -  Scrum with Team Foundation Server 2010 How surprised was I that after the attendees had finished casting their votes that both sessions would be in the top 20 one in the top 5. I an effort to promote diversity in sessions the DDD committee try to make sure that each presenter only have one session. I would have to compress SSW’s presentation into 1 hour. Around this time SSW embarked on it continuing adventures with scrum an Microsoft started heavily investing in Scrum for its internal use. I decided to do a slightly different session, but one that would still meet the agenda and goal of the billed session to provide “Better project management with Team Foundation Server 2010”. And so Scrum with Team Foundation Server 2010 was born. At this stage I really have to thank Aaron Bjork who provided me with many of the slides and animations as I really can’t work Power Point. On the 27th of April I presented the session for the Aberdeen Partner Group and then on 8th May I presented at DDD Scotland.   On January 29th Etienne Tremblay and I presented infront of roughly 120 people in Ottawa a 7 hours "sketch" on how VS 2010 and TFS 2010 can help both devs and testers in their respective work.  The presentation focused on how a testers' work can positively influence a developers' work and vice versa.  The format was quite unusual as I said it's a "sketch" where Etienne and I "ignore" the audience and we do as if we were at work and the audience is sort of "spying" on us.  In all I'm quite pleased with the content we presented and the format sure was alot of fun to render and I think the audience liked it too...  The good news for you people reading this post is that it got RECORDED and it's now available for download in quick 25 to 35 minutes format on the dev teach web site:  http://www.devteach.com/ALM-TFS2010-Bridgingthegap.aspx   There where 2 cameras, one filming us and one capturing the screen for our demos.  We switch from one to another in an intersting flow and Jean-René Roy made sure he kept all our goofs and didn't edit those funny "oups moments" where we screw-up in the scenario...  Mostly educative but hilarious at times !!! • Can AJAX in a CMS slow down your server

  I am currently developing some plugins for WordPress, and I was wondering which route to take. Let's take an example, you want to display the last 3 tweets on your page. Option 1 You do things the normal way inside WordPress. Someone enters the website, while generating the page, you fetch the tweets in php via the twitter api, and just display them where you want. Now the small problem with this is, that you have to wait for the response from twitter. This takes a few ms. NO real problem, but this is question is just out of curiosity. Option 2 Here you don't do anything in WordPress on the initial load, but you do have the API inside. Now you just generate the page, and as soon as the page is done on the client side, you do a small AJAX call back to the server via a WordPress plugin, to fetch your latest tweets. Also called asynchronously. Now the problem with this IMO is that you have much more stress on your server. For starters you have two HTTP requests instead of one. Secondly the WordPress core has to load two times instead of one. Other options Now I know there are a lot of other options: 1) Getting the tweets directly via javascript, no stress on the server at all. 2) Cache the tweets so they are fetched from the DB instead of using the API every time. 3) Getting the tweets from an ajax call that is not a WordPress plugin. 4) Many more. My Question Now my question is if you only compare 1 and 2, which would be a better choice.

• SSW Scrum Rule: Do you know to use clear task descriptions?

  When you create tasks in Scrum you are doing this within a time box and you tend to add only the information you need to remember what the task is. And the entire Team was at the meeting and were involved in the discussions around the task, so why do you need more? Once you have accepted a task you should then add as much information as possible so that anyone can pick up that task; what if your numbers come up? Will you be into work the next day? Figure: What if your numbers come up in the lottery? What if the Team runs a syndicate and all your numbers come up? The point is that anything can happen and you need to protect the integrity of the project, the company and the Customer. Add as much information to the task as you think is necessary for anyone to work on the task. • EF4 CPT5 Code First Remove Cascading Deletes

  I have been using EF4 CTP5 with code first and I really like the new code.  One issue I was having however, was cascading deletes is on by default.  This may come as a surprise as using Entity Framework with anything but code first, this is not the case.  I ran into an exception with some one-to-many relationships I had: Introducing FOREIGN KEY constraint 'ProjectAuthorization_UserProfile' on table 'ProjectAuthorizations' may cause cycles or multiple cascade paths. Specify ON DELETE NO ACTION or ON UPDATE NO ACTION, or modify other FOREIGN KEY constraints. Could not create constraint. See previous errors. To get around this, you can use the fluent API and put some code in the OnModelCreating: 1: protected override void OnModelCreating(System.Data.Entity.ModelConfiguration.ModelBuilder modelBuilder) 2: { 3: modelBuilder.Entity<UserProfile>() 4: .HasMany(u => u.ProjectAuthorizations) 5: .WithRequired(a => a.UserProfile) 6: .WillCascadeOnDelete(false); 7: } This will work to remove the cascading delete, but I have to use the fluent API and it has to be done for every one-to-many relationship that causes the problem. I am personally not a fan of cascading deletes in general (for several reasons) and I’m not a huge fan of fluent APIs.  However, there is a way to do this without using the fluent API.  You can in the OnModelCreating, remove the convention that creates the cascading deletes altogether. 1: protected override void OnModelCreating(System.Data.Entity.ModelConfiguration.ModelBuilder modelBuilder) 2: { 3: modelBuilder.Conventions.Remove<OneToManyCascadeDeleteConvention>(); 4: } Thanks to Jeff Derstadt from Microsoft for the info on removing the convention all together.  There is a way to build a custom attribute to remove it on a case by case basis and I’ll have a post on how to do this in the near future.

  I deploy apps via ClickOnce. After each deployment we have to review the changes made and send out an email to the users with the changes. What I decided now to do is to use CodebaseHQ’s API to access a project’s SVN repository and display the commit notes so some users who download new updates can check what was changed or updated in an app. This saves a heck of a lot of time, especially when your apps are in beta and you are making several changes daily based on feedback.
