  Hi guys, this is my second review of these controls, and it will be quite different than the first. A few months ago I was engaged by a client to develop a web based application. He asked me (I guess they all ask the same) to make it good looking and attractive. The first thing I thought of when I heard this was "I must renew my DXperience subscription". And now I am glad I did that. Before I continue, I would like to say something to those readers who are totally new to DXperience.   I'm about to create a do-everything dashboard for my team and am still having second thoughts about my project/solution structure. Since this could be a long ongoing project, I want to get the structure right from the beginning. This is what I had in mind: Create a solution named "doEverythingDashboard" Delete the project named "doEverythingDashboard" under the solution "doEverythingDashboard" Create winform project named "interface" Create console applications projects for each functionality of "doEverythingDashboard" Reference each console application in "interface" Does this make any sense?   When running some of your Windows Azure applications when storage emulator is not configured you may get the following error: "Windows Azure Tools: Failed to initialize Windows Azure storage emulator. Unable to start Development Storage. Failed to start Storage Emulator: the SQL Server instance ‘localhost\SQLExpress’ could not be found.   Please configure the SQL Server instance for Storage Emulator using the ‘DSInit’ utility in the Windows Azure SDK.". Here’s how to solve this problem. You need to run DSInit utility to create database. For Windows Azure SDK 1.6 the location for DSInit utility is: C:\Program Files\Windows Azure Emulator\emulator\devstore By default DSInit expects that your database server is (local)\SQLEXPRESS but you can change it easily. If you have MSSQL instance called SQLEXPRESS then it is enough to just run DSInit. If you need some other instance then run the following command: DSInit /sqlinstance:<instance name> For default instance use “.” as instance name: DSInit /sqlinstance:. You can find more information about sqlinstance and other switches from DSInit documentation. If database was correctly created you should see dialog like this: When storage database is ready you can run your application.

  I have a fairly old Outlook add-in written in VB6. This adds a toolbar on the Outlook ribbon with buttons for various bits of functionality which interact with emails in the inbox, the contact list and calendar. I have been asked if it would be possible to trigger some of the functions of this add-in when a user hits "Send" on an email. Does anyone know if it is possible to hook a VB6 program into the send event, or if it would be possible to write a new plugin, using .Net as an example, which could hook into the send event and trigger the functionality on the old plug in?? Sorry if this is a bit vague, it is a little hard to explain. If you need to know anything further, just ask, otherwise any advice is greatly appreciated!

How do I get sapi to say a word from a multiline textbox then pause and give the focus to the 1st textbox so the user can type it and give them 30 sec then sapi will say the next word then give focus to the 2nd textbox so user can type and give them 30 secs to type the word. • Installing NVIDIA driver causes black screen (750M)

  I have a dual boot set up on a Lenovo Ideapad Y500 with NVIDIA 750M and I am having problems installing the graphics cards. I have made sure to install both linux-headers-generic and linux-source, and yet have ended up with a black screen whether I install nvidia-current, nvidia-current-updates, nvidia-experimental-310, and nvidia-319. I even tried enabling proprietary drivers through settings and still ended up with a black screen on boot. Is my graphics card just not supported yet, or is there a way to fix this?

• What are some ways you use VS2010 Toolbox to be more productive?

  I just saw a presenter who had pre-loaded a large number of code snippets into the Toolbox so that he could pull them into the presentation rather than trying to re-type code on the spot (or have it already integrated and trying to comment/uncomment/etc.) This seemed like an extremely effective use. It got me thinking, though, that perhaps the Toolbox is far more powerful than I've ever considered, but a couple quick google searches didn't yield what I was looking for. What are some other uses of the Toolbox that could help in productivity which may or may not be obvious?

Unfortunately this is not accomplished by the vs2012 implementation of accumulate. Internally accumulate calls another function _Accumulate and the rvalue functionality gets lost in the process. It I instead call the _Accumulate function like so string words = Accumulate(wordArray.begin(), wordArray.end(), move(test), adder); I get the intended performance gain. Must the std library be rewritten to take rvalue arguments into consideration? Is there some other way I may use accumulate to accomplish what I want without cheating to much?

• Dashboard for collaborative science / data processing projects

  Hi, Continuous Integration servers like Hudson are a pretty amazing addition to software development. I work in an academic research lab, and I'd love to apply similar principles to scientific data analysis. I want a dashboard-like view of which collections of data are fine, which ones are failing their tests (simple shell scripts, mostly), and so on. A lot like the Chromium dashboard (WARNING: page takes a long time to load). It takes work from at least 4 people, and maybe 10 or 12 hours of computer time, to bring our data (from behavioral studies) from its raw form to its final, easily-analyzed form. I've tried Hudson and buildbot, but neither is really appropriate to our workflow. We just want to run a bunch of tests on maybe fifty independent collections of subject data, and display the results nicely. SO! Does anyone have a recommendation of a way to generate this kind of report easily? Or, can you think of a good way to shoehorn this kind of workflow into a continuous integration server? Or, can you recommend a unit testing dashboard that could deal with tests that are little shell scripts rather than little functions? Thank you!

  I have a big fat query that's written dynamically to integrate some data. Basically what it does is query some tables, join some other ones, treat some data, and then insert it into a final table. The problem is that there's too much data, and we can't really trust the sources, because there could be some errored or inconsistent data. For example, I've spent almost an hour looking for an error while developing using a customer's database because somewhere in the middle of my big fat query there was an error converting some varchar to datetime. It turned out to be that they had some sales dating '2009-02-29', an out-of-range date. And yes, I know. Why was that stored as varchar? Well, the source database has 3 columns for dates, 'Month', 'Day' and 'Year'. I have no idea why it's like that, but still, it is. But how the hell would I treat that, if the source is not trustable? I can't HANDLE exceptions, I really need that it comes up to another level with the original message, but I wanted to provide some more info, so that the user could at least try to solve it before calling us. So I thought about displaying to the user the row number, or some ID that would at least give him some idea of what record he'd have to correct. That's also a hard job because there will be times when the integration will run up to 80000 records. And in an 80000 records integration, a single dummy error message: 'The conversion of a varchar data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value' means nothing at all. So any idea would be appreciated. Oh I'm using SQL Server 2005 with Service Pack 3.

• Accessing Web.config directly in ASP.NET MVC 1

  I'm trying to implement integration testing in my ASP.NET MVC 1.0 solution. The technologies in use are LINQ-to-SQL, NUnit and WatiN. I recently discovered a pattern that will allow me to create a testing version of the database on the fly without modifying the development version of the database. I needed this behavior in order to run my user interface tests in WatiN that may modify the database. The plan is to modify the connection string in the Web.config file, and pass that new connection string to the DataContext constructor. This way, I don't have to add routes or modify my URLs in order to perform the integration testing. I've set up the project so that the test setup can modify the connection string to point to the test database when the tests are running. The connection string is stored in web.config. The problem I'm having is that when I try to run the tests, I get a NullReferenceException when trying to access the HTTPContext. From everything that I have read so far, the HTTPContext is only available within the context of a controller. Here is the code for the property that is supposed to give me the reference to the Web.config file: private System.Configuration.Configuration WebConfig { get { ExeConfigurationFileMap fileMap = new ExeConfigurationFileMap(); // NullReferenceException occurs on this line. fileMap.ExeConfigFilename = HttpContext.Current.Server.MapPath("~\\web.config"); System.Configuration.Configuration config = ConfigurationManager.OpenMappedExeConfiguration(fileMap, ConfigurationUserLevel.None); return config; } } Is there something that I am missing in order to make this work? • How to hold a queue of messages and have a group of working threads without polling?

  I have a workflow that I want to looks something like this: / Worker 1 \ =Request Channel= - [Holding Queue|||] - Worker 2 - =Response Channel= \ Worker 3 / That is: Requests come in and they enter a FIFO queue Identical workers then pick up tasks from the queue At any given time any worker may work only one task When a worker is free and the holding queue is non-empty the worker should immediately pick up another task When tasks are complete, a worker places the result on the Response Channel I know there are QueueChannels in Spring Integration, but these channels require polling (which seems suboptimal). In particular, if a worker can be busy, I'd like the worker to be busy. Also, I've considered avoiding the queue altogether and simply letting tasks round-robin to all workers, but it's preferable to have a single waiting line as some tasks may be accomplished faster than others. Furthermore, I'd like insight into how many jobs are remaining (which I can get from the queue) and the ability to cancel all or particular jobs. How can I implement this message queuing/work distribution pattern while avoiding a polling? Edit: It appears I'm looking for the Message Dispatcher pattern -- how can I implement this using Spring/Spring Integration?

• How do I manage dependencies for automated builds on my build server?

  I'm trying to implement continuous integration into our day to day workings. In our team, we're moving from just building our code in Visual Studio on our workstations and deploying, to using MSBuild.exe and automating on our build server (which is Jenkins) without the use of Visual Studio. We have external dependencies to references such as Automap in our projects. Because the automap (for example) dll isn't on the build server, the msbuild execution fails, for obvious reasons. There are other dll's which I need to be part of the build, I'm just using automap as an example. So what's the best way to get any dependencies onto the build server as part of the automated build? I've seen references to using a 'lib' folder, but I don't really understand where I should be putting it (in my project, filesystem, SVN ...?), and how the build server will get to it. I've also read that NuGet can do something with dependencies, but my build server isn't connected to the internet, and I don't understand how I can get my build to pull a NuGet package I may have created, and how it works together. Edit: I'm using subversion and we cannot use TeamCity as we would have to buy it and there's zero chance of funding.

  I need to send emails from my social service (this is continuation of Experiences in mailing to registered users). I got strong feeling that it's better to avoid problems with email server configuration and maintance and to choose email provider which will take care of all painful problems. So several offers were compared: http://imgur.com/JkK2X.jpg Three of them look very attractive: Postageapp / Sendgrid / CritSend As alternative i'm considering setup GAE app. Email provider is quite easy to start work with, but have no idea how much effort require GAE to integrate with PHP. So my question is: which option is better to choose: email provider GAE ? Two factors are important here: business background (therefore prices are mentioned), work required to setup and maintain desired solution. Preferably i would love to avoid all email-related problems (like black lists and so on).

• What's the performance on USB docking stations, and can they be used when laptop is closed?

  I'm looking into a docking station for a Dell Studio laptop. I don't see the traditional docking stations I'm familiar with - the kind (for a Dell Latitude, for example) where you sit the laptop on top of a long row of pins. Instead, I'm seeing a lot of USB docking stations. When I close my laptop, I want it to go into sleep mode. If I then connect a USB docking station to the laptop while it's closed, will it wake up? What's the performance on USB 2.0 docking stations with a new Dell Studio? Can all of the video and internet traffic really go through a USB 2.0 connection while still providing the best video frame rates and internet speeds? When you undock, I assume you'd have to use the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature in Windows. Will that successfully 'remove' everything attached to the docking station - external drives, thumb drives, etc?
