  • Is there a peripheral that lets my computer monitor the connectivity of pairs of wires?

    I've got a bunch of physical switches and circuits that act like switches (they're either connected to ground or they're just an open wire). Is there some sort of thing I can plug into my computer (ideally, via USB) that has a bunch of screw terminals, and I can attach wires to the screws and have the computer keep track of which circuits are closed and which are open? Bonus points if the device also lets the computer open and close switches, too. I don't even know what to google for.

  • Trick XP into having more RAM?

    Hi everyone, Are there any way known to trick an computer with XP to appear to have more RAM? I need to install a specific program (which fits in my system requirements), which is bundled with a number of other programs on an DVD. Unfortunately, the other programs besides the one that I need demand twice the amount of RAM that's available on my computer and the installation is closed due to this. Can I trick my XP computer into have more RAM temporarily to bypass the block in the install executable? Thanks

    Hello, i have a weired problem here, i'm running windows vista which is connected to the internet throught a 3g key, so sometimes i go to see how much datas are being downloaded and i find 200kb/s even if i don't use the internet, i closed all softwares like antivirus and everything and still the internet being consumed, thanks god because i only pay by month. So is there a tool for pc to monitor the softwares that are using my connexion? Thanks

    I am getting the following message when attempting to connect to our company's SVN repository - the same error occurs whether I try from the OSX command line or Eclipse. Any ideas on where to troubleshoot?   • [Vista] Can not access control panel.

  • How to move windows that open up offscreen?

    I have a dual monitor setup, and I recently played around with the positioning settings, and some of my single window applications do the favour of preserving where they were last closed, and opening in the same position later. Unfortuanately, that now places them out of the viewable area of my screens! Is there some way to force a particular window into the viewable area? If it matters at all, this is on Windows XP 32b.

  • How to make xvnc not kill the session on exit

    Hello, I'm implementing a remotedesktop access to a server thru xvnc/xinetd/gdm. I'd like many users to connect to that server using vnc (thus providing the gdm login screen) and want that if the xvnc session is closed, it would 'xlock' the session so next time user connects it will resume his session. Tried several parameter tweaks, but unfortunately each time the vnc viewer is closes, the X session is also destroyed. Help/clues would be really appreciated.

  • How would I prevent users from logging in a PC while software is installing?

    So I currently am looking for a solution to keeping users logged out while software is installing or activating a pop-up message that cannot be moved, closed, and is always on top, because sometimes when we deploy software to users (via SCCM), the parameters of the install require the user to be logged out for the duration of the installation. I've looked at trying to customize the group policy for account lockout but with no luck. Anyone know of any programs or scripts that do this? Thank you!

    I would like to be able to pull changes on a remote server from an SVN server on a local development box. The SVN port is closed to the WAN but available via our LAN and we have a VPN setup locally. Is it difficult to setup the remote server to use VPN to connect to the remote SVN server and update code?   • What causes "system call failed" and there are hanging ie processes?

    System: Windows 7 Home Premium IE: 11.0.9600.17107 When I have had many, many apps and windows open, sometimes I'll try to access a folder and get a dialog that says "System Call Failed". I have found the fix for it is to open the task manager and End Process Tree on iexplore.exe and iexplore.exe *32. Often times there will be several of these even when I have closed all my browser windows. Does anyone have any experience with this error?

  • Add send/receive to Outlook systray icon?

    Is it possible to add a send/receive action to the Outlook 2007 system tray right-click context menu? It's a little annoying to have to open the whole interface just to run this simple action manually. I have searched for an answer, but could only find two other unanswered questions. If there's no particular answer as of yet, would it make more sense to explore making a plug-in like this one to keep running in the systray when closed, or to look for a registry hack, or something else entirely?

    Title says it all, hope this is possible as I want to start a network of sites for different stuff but want to use one account system with that subdomain using ssl with extended verification, thanks. EDIT: Ok, it has been closed because I am not being clear enough so I will narrow it down a bit more. I am wondering how to move all registration files and login files into a sub-domain instead of just the normal domain so I can put an SSL on it to make it more secure but leave the rest of the blog on the normal domain.

  • xrdp and xfce4 Ubuntu 14.04 slow refreshrate

    I am running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 32bit and I am connecting via windows rdp to my ubuntu machine that has xrdp with xfce4 session. Network is 40mbps/5mbps. RDP to a windows machine from a windows machine is flawless from same location. I can connect fine, but the refresh rate is horrible. When it fist opens the desktop, the picture drags as seen in this image. The same thing happens when items are opened, closed, etc. Windows have the same effect. Sometimes up to 4 seconds before the image is rendered, depending on the image. Is there a setting to improve the refresh rate or something I can do to fix?

  • Installation after boot shows no display

    I just booted 12.04 for installation from USB-stick. But there is a problem with the display. After boot I see a rectangle on the lower left corner of the screen, after a while I see "Ubuntu 12.04 ..." loading from USB-Stick, the Ubuntu-Desktop starts fine, clicking on Ubuntu-Install seems to work ... till identification, then Installation-window closed and ... nothing more happens. So I want to try Installation direct from the Menu at the beginning - before Ubuntu-12.04-loading. Butt I cannot see any menus at that time. I think there is an graphic-problem? How can I get the installation by menus, how would the Installation via Desktop going to work? Bye Matthias

  • SmtpClient and Locked File Attachments

    Got a note a couple of days ago from a client using one of my generic routines that wraps SmtpClient. Apparently whenever a file has been attached to a message and emailed with SmtpClient the file remains locked after the message has been sent. Oddly this particular issue hasn’t cropped up before for me although these routines are in use in a number of applications I’ve built. The wrapper I use was built mainly to backfit an old pre-.NET 2.0 email client I built using Sockets to avoid the CDO nightmares of the .NET 1.x mail client. The current class retained the same class interface but now internally uses SmtpClient which holds a flat property interface that makes it less verbose to send off email messages. File attachments in this interface are handled by providing a comma delimited list for files in an Attachments string property which is then collected along with the other flat property settings and eventually passed on to SmtpClient in the form of a MailMessage structure. The jist of the code is something like this: /// <summary> /// Fully self contained mail sending method. Specifically notice that attachment filenames are converted from a comma-delimited string to filenames from which new attachments are created. The code as it’s written however, will cause the problem with file attachments not being released properly. Internally .NET opens up stream handles and reads the files from disk to dump them into the email send stream. The attachments are always sent correctly but the local files are not immediately closed. As you probably guessed the issue is simply that some resources are not automatcially disposed when sending is complete and sure enough the following code change fixes the problem: // Create and configure the message using (MailMessage msg = this.GetMessage()) { smtp.Send(msg); if (this.SendComplete != null) this.OnSendComplete(this); // or use an explicit msg.Dispose() here } The Message object requires an explicit call to Dispose() (or a using() block as I have here) to force the attachment files to get closed. I think this is rather odd behavior for this scenario however. The code I use passes in filenames and my expectation of an API that accepts file names is that it uses the files by opening and streaming them and then closing them when done. Why keep the streams open and require an explicit .Dispose() by the calling code which is bound to lead to unexpected behavior just as my customer ran into? Any API level code should clean up as much as possible and this is clearly not happening here resulting in unexpected behavior. Apparently lots of other folks have run into this before as I found based on a few Twitter comments on this topic. Odd to me too is that SmtpClient() doesn’t implement IDisposable – it’s only the MailMessage (and Attachments) that implement it and require it to clean up for left over resources like open file handles. This means that you couldn’t even use a using() statement around the SmtpClient code to resolve this – instead you’d have to wrap it around the message object which again is rather unexpected. Well, chalk that one up to another small unexpected behavior that wasted a half an hour of my time – hopefully this post will help someone avoid this same half an hour of hunting and searching.   • Backtrack installation interrupted once, installed another time

    I installed Backtrack 5 from a Live CD yesterday and while installing, i closed my laptop to let it run while I sleep. But then I remembered my friend told me the plastic of his computer melted this way, so i opened it again. It put it on power save, and somehow the installation was interrupted. The day after, I tried again and this time it worked. Now, I have a GRUB Menu With Win7 and twice the Ubuntu + Safe mode or whatever it's called. How can I remove the failed installation without deleting Win7 or the successful installation? Normally I would use EasyBCD and delete the partitions, but this time I couldn't start Backtrack then.
