• disks not ready in array causes mdadm to force initramfs shell

  Okay, this is starting to get pretty frustrating. I've read most of the other answers on this site that have anything to do with this issue but I'm still not getting anywhere. I have a RAID 6 array with 10 devices and 1 spare. The OS is on a completely separate device. At boot only three of the 10 devices in the raid are available, the others become available later in the boot process. Currently, unless I go through initramfs I can't get the system to boot - it just hangs with a blank screen. When I do boot through recovery (initramfs), I get a message asking if I want to assemble the degraded array. If I say no and then exit initramfs the system boots fine and my array is mounted exactly where I intend it to. Here are the pertinent files as near as I can tell. • Grub Rescue Unknown Filesystem Error. Grub Corrupted or Filesystem?

  Now it has happened twice & have been pulling my hairs now... I have installed xubuntu on my external hardisk & have been using it for about 3 months. It has three partitions, one of 500 mb mounted at /boot, 2nd one of 48gb mounted at / & the rest (out of 160gb) is ntfs partition....used as normal external storage. The last storage supposedly acts as a buffer b/w Linux distributions & Win platform, buffer in the sense that it provides a universal channel for data transfers. I have constantly used this external hardisk for data transfers b/w win7 laptop & xubuntu (on this external hd) without any hassle. However, on of my desktops where I have ubuntu I (for the first time) attached this external drive which let me do data transfers where all three partitions properly mounted....but then nasty thing occurred the same that occurred before. I (as usual) tried booting via this external hd (one having xubuntu, one having being formerly used under Ubuntu) I got error Now I am totally devastated because similar thing happened ~6months before when I had fedora 17 in my external hd (instead of xubuntu) & after it was used under ubuntu the same happened...i didn't reported it because I already had planned towards debian instead of rpm! The mystery is that as long as I don't attach this external hd under ubuntu the data never** corrupts whereas under win xp/7 I can use it as a normal usb storage of coarse linux partitions aren’t available under win platforms... **From corrupts I mean hd fails to boot with the error mentioned however cant say whether data within remains untouched? It seems that my grub & or MBR is corrupted. Everything at my home was fine: Wireless identified and connected. As soon as I went to my girlfriend's house the trouble started. I couldn't connect to wireless (authentication... times out and asks for authentication) I started doing internet searching, tried a few solutions posted on line using terminal commands. No solutions. I decided to upgraded to 12.10-13.04 and that left me with a worse problem: I can no longer see ANY networks what so ever. Wireless card is ON, with out a doubt. Wired connection works. • How to upgrade a remote server from 8.10 to newer version?

  I have a remote server still running Ubuntu 8.10 9.04 that I can only access via SSH. If I run apt-get update I get a bunch of 404 errors on the packages. I've asked a few questions on Server Fault but got nowhere. Here's what I've done: Run apt-get update which returns errors like: Err http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com intrepid/main Packages 404 Not Found [and same for many other packages] Run do-release-upgrade which returns: Checking for a new ubuntu release Failed Upgrade tool signature Failed Upgrade tool Done downloading extracting 'jaunty.tar.gz' Failed to extract Extracting the upgrade failed. There may be a problem with the network or with the server. Edited /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades and changed from Prompt=normal to Prompt=lts (as suggested here). Running do-release-upgrade after this returns: Checking for a new ubuntu release current dist not found in meta-release file No new release found (Updated) I have followed the advice in this question and changed /etc/apt/sources.list to refer to jaunty instead of intrepid. However, that distro is not online anymore either. A comment there says I have to upgrade in chronological order... So basically, it seems like I cannot upgrade because my current distro is out of date and not supported. Is there a way to upgrade direct to 10.x or 11.x? Note, as this is a server I only have command-line access. UPDATE 24/11: I have managed to upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04. Ubuntu's EOL Upgrades page provides some alternate URLs for apt sources. I also needed to update /var/lib/update-manager/meta-release to point to the old-releases server too. However, now I cannot upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. Running do-release-upgrade produces the same error as #2 above, except it "Failed to fetch" (the URLs in meta-release are valid). The Ubuntu Jaunty upgrade page says it's necessary to upgrade using a CD image. I followed the instructions here, but it didn't work: A fatal error occurred Please report this as a bug and include the files /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log and /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log in your report. • How much am I worth hourly as a software/web developer? [closed]

  I may be starting a new job very soon as a developer for both web and desktop software. The primary languages I will be using is ASP.NET with C# with some php for existing projects(I've already had one interview which went very well). The job deals primarily in advertising. But this is my first real job in the market, I have no degrees, but have some college time(~1yr). So I am primarily self taught. They are fully aware of my skill set and lack of degrees or certificates. I applied as an entry level developer. It will be a permanent and full time/hourly position, and not a per contract job. So since it my cherry job, im not really sure what to ask for. even though im self taught im pretty confident in my skills and know what im doing fairly well. I pick up on new concepts very well and find new things fairly easy to learn. Here is a very brief summary of my skills: PHP: ~2years C#/.NET: 2 months Python: Basics only. ~1 month OOP Familiarity: Great (1 year) MVC Familiarity: Great (1 year) PHP Frameworks used: CakePHP(6 months), Yii(3 months), Lithium(3 months) CMS Familiar with: Drupal(1.5 years), Wordpress(only basics) I also have ~2yrs experience in maintaining my own VPS server and the hassles all that entails (linux/debian) Pretty much all the above will be used at this job. Although I will be using C# a vast majority of the time. I only recently started learning it but am moving along fairly rapidly and its all going smooth as butter. So what have I built? I have one proprietary site built in drupal which is used an an order log for products, inventory, and their shipments. It is also able to process payments through paypal merchant services. I have worked on a handful of other small apps used here and there I'm not able to show but which worked fairly well (all in php using frameworks though). The business does fairly well and is far from a a typical corporate type environment. It is much closer to a small development studio. And it is based out of northern California. I don't know how/what more info I can give on them. I also want this to be able to be referenced by other people possibly so I am looking for general tips and ideas to get an answer as well. I had trouble finding a reasonable range on other websites which seemed to be either way to low, or showed what a veteran developer makes. I know this is a fairly subjective question, but it is difficult to get a reasonable answer or guesstimate anywhere else. Even if only a little bit help, its much appreciated. So as for the direct question, based on all this info (did I miss anything?), how much should I ask for hourly? How much am I worth as a software developer?

I'm starting both Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server Management Studio 2008 under domain admin user. This account is a member of group sysadmin on SQL Server. Server has firewall exceptions for both TCP and UDP on ports 135-139 and 1433-1434.   As per the thread title I want to programmatically set the ContextKey of an AutoComplete Extender placed in a gridviews footer row. Background is I have a data model that has Territory and Journey Plans for those territories. Customers need to be added to the journey plans but only those customers that belong to the Territory that owns the Journey Plan. In the footer row of my grid I have added a textbox which allows a user to enter account code of customer. Attached to this textbox is an autocomplete extender. I need to do a select against the db for customers with account code like prefix where customer in territory. But there is no way to provide territory id. • Webservice Connection Refused

  I have developed a web app using a webservice. Everything works fine in the development environment. I have moved the webservice to the production server in a test folder behind my main website. I can browse to the published service localy on the production server and i can access the remote service from my development machine. If I run my web app in my development environment I can use the remote webservice no problem. If I move the web application to the production environment the browser outputs this error when the application performs the ajax login method.   Working around an issue where my jquery datepicker does not display after postback within an update panel. The textbox (trigger) for the calendar is contained within a control, which is contained within an update panel. • How do I create a named temporary file on windows in Python?

  I've got a Python program that needs to create a named temporary file which will be opened and closed a couple times over the course of the program, and should be deleted when the program exits. Unfortunately, none of the options in tempfile seem to work: TemporaryFile doesn't have a visible name NamedTemporaryFile creates a file-like object. I just need a filename. I've tried closing the object it returns (after setting delete = False) but I get stream errors when I try to open the file later. SpooledTemporaryFile doesn't have a visible name mkstemp returns both the open file object and the name; it doesn't guarantee the file is deleted when the program exits mktemp returns the filename, but doesn't guarantee the file is deleted when the program exits I've tried using mktemp1 within a context manager, like so: def get_temp_file(suffix): class TempFile(object): def __init__(self): self.name = tempfile.mktemp(suffix = '.test') def __enter__(self): return self def __exit__(self, ex_type, ex_value, ex_tb): if os.path.exists(self.name): try: os.remove(self.name) except: print sys.exc_info() return TempFile() ... but that gives me a WindowsError(32, 'The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process'). The filename is used by a process my program spawns, and even though I ensure that process finishes before I exit, it seems to have a race condition out of my control. What's the best way of dealing with this? 1 I don't need to worry about security here; this is part of a testing module, so the most someone nefarious could do is cause our unit tests to spuriously fail. • Segmentation fault on MPI, runs properly on OpenMP

  Hi, I am trying to run a program on a computer cluster. The structure of the program is the following: PROGRAM something ... CALL subroutine1(...) ... END PROGRAM SUBROUTINE subroutine1(...) ... DO i=1,n CALL subroutine2(...) ENDDO ... END SUBROUTINE SUBROUTINE subroutine2(...) ... CALL subroutine3(...) CALL subroutine4(...) ... END SUBROUTINE The idea is to parallelize the loop that calls subroutine2. Main program basically only makes the call to subroutine1 and only its arguments are declared. I use two alternatives. On the one hand, I write OpenMP clauses arround the loop. On the other hand, I add an IF conditional branch arround the call and I use MPI to share the results. In the OpenMP case, I add CALL KMP_SET_STACKSIZE(402653184) at the beginning of the main program and I can run it with 8 threads on an 8 core machine. When I run it (on the same 8 core machine) with MPI (either using 8 or 1 processors) it crashes just when makes the call to subroutine3 with a segmentation fault (signal 11) error. If I comment subroutine4, then it doesn't crash (notice that it crashed just when calling subroutine3 and it works when commenting subroutine4). I compile with mpif90 using MPICH2 libraries and the following flags: -O3 -fpscomp logicals -openmp -threads -m64 -xS. The machine has EM64T architecture and I use a Debian Linux distribution. I set ulimit -s hard before running the program. Any ideas on what is going on? Has it something to do with stack size? Thanks in advance

• Looking for a workaround for IE 6/7 "Unspecified Error" bug when accessing offsetParent; using ASP.N

  I'm using jQuery UI's draggable and droppable libraries in a simple ASP.NET proof of concept application. This page uses the ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel to do partial page updates. The page allows a user to drop an item into a trashcan div, which will invoke a postback that deletes a record from the database, then rebinds the list (and other controls) that the item was drug from. All of these elements (the draggable items and the trashcan div) are inside an ASP.NET UpdatePanel. • JBoss 5.1 binds to host address while run in vserver with -b <guest address>

  Hello, while starting JBoss 5.1.0.GA in virtual server machine on Debian (linux-VServer technology) I get the following error: ERROR [org.jboss.kernel.plugins.dependency.AbstractKernelController] (main) Error installing to Start: name=jboss.remoting:protocol=rmi,service=JMXConnectorServer state=Create mode=Manual requiredState=Installed java.io.IOException: Cannot bind to URL [rmi://10.1.2.11:1090/jmxconnector]: javax.naming.NoPermissionException [Root exception is java.rmi.ServerException: RemoteException occurred in server thread; nested exception is: java.rmi.AccessException: Registry.Registry.bind disallowed; origin /AA.BB.CC.DD is non-local host] where AA.BB.CC.DD is host machine name, 10.1.2.11 is vserver guest with JBoss and JBoss is started with -b 10.1.2.11 (I also tried -Djboss.bind.address=10.1.2.11 - the same result). 10.1.2.11 is bound to dummy2 interface on host (serving 10.1.2.1 network). The root exception is strange - why JBoss wants to bind to host address AA.BB.CC.DD? There were no problems with 4.2.3.GA on the same machine, also started with -b 10.1.2.11. It starts correctly when no params present - binds to localhost and everything is ok, but it MUST be bound to 10.1.2.11 to be visible by Apache on another vserver guest, acting as proxy. I thought that it can be fixed by setting net.ipv4.conf.all.promote_secondaries=1 via sysctl (was 0) but it didn't help much. Has anyone had such problem? Regards, bart

• Common coding style for Python?

  Hi, I'm pretty new to Python, and I want to develop my first serious open source project. I want to ask what is the common coding style for python projects. I'll put also what I'm doing right now. 1.- What is the most widely used column width? (the eternal question) I'm currently sticking to 80 columns (and it's a pain!) 2.- What quotes to use? (I've seen everything and PEP 8 does not mention anything clear) I'm using single quotes for everything but docstrings, which use triple double quotes. 3.- Where do I put my imports? I'm putting them at file header in this order. import sys import -rest of python modules needed- import whatever import -rest of application modules- <code here> 4.- Can I use "import whatever.function as blah"? I saw some documents that disregard doing this. 5.- Tabs or spaces for indenting? Currently using 4 spaces tabs. 6.- Variable naming style? I'm using lowercase for everything but classes, which I put in camelCase. Anything you would recommend?

• JavaScript keeps returning ambigious error (in ASP.NET MVC 2.0)
