• Cannot connect on TFS 2012 server through SSL with invalid certificate

  I saw the problem on some forums and even here, but not as specific as mine. So here's the thing, So I've configured a TFS 2012 server, on one of my personnel server at home, and now, I'm trying to make it available through the internet, with the help of apache2 on a different UNIX based, physical server. The thing is working perfectly, I don't have any problem accessing the address https://tfs.something.com/tfs through my browser. The address can be pinged and I do have access to the TFS control panel through it. How does it work? Well, with apache2 you can set a virtual host and set up the ProxyPass and ProxyPassReserver setting, so the traffic can externally comes from a secure SSL connection, through a specified domain or sub-domain, but it can be locally redirect on a clear http session on a different port. This is my current setup. As I already said, I can access the web interface, but when I'm trying to connect with Visual Studio 2012, it can't be done. Here's the error I receive: http://i.imgur.com/TLQIn.png The technical information tells me: The underlying connection was closed: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel. My SSL certificate is invalid and was automatically generated on my UNIX server. Even if I try to add it in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities either on my TFS server or on my local workstation, it doesn't work. I still receive the same error. Is there's a way to completely ignore certificate validation? If not, what's have I done? I mean, I've added the certificate in the trusted root certificates, it should works as mentioned on some forums... If you need more information, please ask me, I'll be pleased to provide you more. • The email address used to help trust my PC, is no longer valid, how do I fix that?

  A few nights ago I upgraded my Windows 7 PC to Windows 8. This morning, when I logged into my PC, I noticed the little flag in the system tray, in desktop mode, had a red "X" on it. I checked it and one of the issues was my needing to tell Windows 8 that I trusted my PC. I clicked on the link to trust my PC, and saw the button to tell it to trust my PC, and so I did. After doing that it send it had sent out an email to a really old email address I had, which hasn't been valid for many years. Now what? Will that "trusting my PC" be invalid, because I can't respond to it (which certainly isn't true, if it's sending messages to so old email address). I didn't even know that Windows still had such an old email address. I'm concerned that I won't have a trust relationship with my own PC, that somehow or other whatever holds onto my information has old information and that I am not sure how to change it in as fast a manner as possible so that I can trust my own PC. How do I do these things?

  On my NAS QNAP TS 509 I do have a technical issue. I need to run e2fsck. This works fine for me on md0 (see below), but how can I unmount the busy devices md9 and sda4 in order to do the same. Whenever I try, I fail because the device is busy. [This part is solved, see below] In order to further track down the issue, I'd need to sort out the physical disk to device relationship. How can I find out this, e.g. md0 is a stripped volume on 2 disk (but I need to find out on what physical disk). • RemoteApp .rdp embed creds?

  Windows 2008 R2 server running Remote Desktop Services (what we used to call Terminal Services back in the olden days). This server is the entry point into a hosted application -- you could call it Software as a Service I suppose. We have 3rd party clients connecting to use it. Using RemoteApp Manager to build RemoteApp .rdp shortcuts to distribute to client workstations. These workstations are not in the same domain as the RDS server. There is no trust relationship between domains (nor will there be). There is a tightly controlled site to site VPN between workstations and the RDS server, we're quite confident we have access to the server locked down. The remoteApp being run is an ERP application with its own authentication scheme. The issue? I'm trying to avoid the need to create AD logins for every end user when connecting to the RemoteApp server. In fact, since we're doing a remoteApp and they have to authenticate to that app, I'd rather just not prompt them at all for AD creds. I certainly don't want them caught up in managing AD passwords (and periodic expirations) for accounts they only use to get to their ERP login. However, I can't figure out how to embed AD creds in a RemoteApp .rdp file. I don't really want to turn off all authentication on the RDS server at that level. Any good options? My goal is to make this as seamless as possible for the end-users. Clarifying questions are welcome.

• XNA 3D model collision is inaccurate

  I am creating a classic game in 3d that deals with asteriods and you have to shoot them and avoid being hit from them. I can generate the asteroids just fine and the ship can shoot bullets just fine. But the asteroids always hit the ship even it doesn't look they are even close. • Sorting/grouping when there are multiple values in one cell

  I have an Excel 2007 spreadsheet, where each row of the dataset describes a feature of a piece of software. One of the columns in the spreadsheet is Relevant Users, which describes which users of the software the feature is of interest to. There may be a couple of different users interested in a feature, in which case I've been filling in the cell with the two user types separated by a colon, e.g. 'Usertype A; Usertype D'. Occassionally, I'd like to sort my data by the Relevant Users column. However, the way I'm populating the column means the sorting isn't very smart. If I have a feature where 'Relevant Users' is 'Usertype A; Usertype D', and then I sort by Relevant Users, that feature will be grouped at the end of all the other features of relevant to Usertype A, as it's just sorting alphabetically. But I want it to be listed in the two separate groups of Usertype A and Usertype D. Or, if I have a pivot table that groups the features together under the heading of Relevant User, I'll get all the features for 'Usertype A', then 'Usertype B', then 'Usertype C', then 'Usertype D', then 'Usertype A; Usertype D', etc. Whereas I really want a feature with Relevant Users as 'Usertype A; Usertype D' to show up in both the Usertype A group and the Usertype D group. I guess if this information was in a database I might have a many-to-many table linking Relevant Users to features. But is there a way to go about having this kind of many-to-many relationship in Excel?

• Debugging a Drobo that chokes Windows 7x64 When Plugged In

  I've had a love hate relationship with my Drobo for a long time. After two years of using it on a Linux box, I moved it over to a Windows 7 machine where it seemed to work just fine for a long time, but it was under very light usage. Mainly backups that never actually happened. Recently I began using it for additional backup services (through CrashPlan, which is great). This means the Drobo gets a lot more usage. Also it means that something interesting happens, the Drobo can choke my system on startup. Here's what I mean: Start computer without Drobo plugged in, CrashPlan and Drobo Dashboard services disabled: 105s Start computer with Drobo plugged in Crashplan disabled, Drobo Dashboard enabled: 250s (and 1 cpu at 100% for a very long time, drobo churning) Start computer with Drobo plugged in, CrashPlan and Drobo Dashboard disabled: 250s (1 cpu at 100% for a very long time, drobo churning) Start computer with Drobo plugged in, Crashplan and Drobo Dashboard enabled: 300s (1 cpu at 100% for a very long time, drobo churning) If I yank the USB plug on the Drobo the CPU usage goes down to nothing very quickly. The slow startup in the fourth scenario is because CrashPlan is trying desperately to load stuff up on the H: drive before it gives up, so I've disabled it for the time being. So here's my question: What the heck is going on when I plug the drobo in? I've fired up Process Explorer and see that the System process is hogging the CPU, specifically it's an ntoskrnl.exe/KdPollBreakIn thread that's going ape. Is this something that's wrong with Drobo? Windows? Any idea on how to find out? If it matters, here's tech info: Athlon 64x2 4400, 2GB RAM, Win7 Ultimate, Drobo USB (2x1TB, 2x320GB)

  I am using same network for 2 days and everything was normal. However, today even though it shows me as connected to the network, I do not have internet connection. If I use ethernet cable instead of wireless, I am still able to connect to the internet. Also my friends are able to connect to the wireless network and they can get internet connection. I did not update or install anything since yesterday. Therefore I do not have any idea why it is happening. • How to set up port forwarding on a dedicated server running CentOS 5.4 to use Ubuntu 9.0.4

  The basic situation that I have is a dedicated server running CentOS 5.4 At the moment I have one VM running Ubuntu 9.0.4. Later on, I will want to add another VM running Windows Server 2003 but at the moment I am focusing on getting Ubuntu up and running. The Ubuntu installation is working fine but I'm seriously struggling to get port forwarding working so that I can access websites to be hosted on the Ubuntu VM. As a newbie to Linux, I am confused about the relationship between IPTables and VMWare's own port forwarding. Here's what I've tried so far. The IP of my server is xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and the provider support have told me that the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, the gateway address is xxx.xxx.xxx.1 and the network address is xxx.xxx.xxx.0. (Those latter two surprise me a bit, I expected private gateway/network address rather than public ones.) First of all I tried Bridged Networking but had no success at all in communicating with the machine other than through the VMware console. I tried pinging it from the host (using ssh into the host) but no joy; also no Inernet access from the VM. I changed the interfaces configuration from DHCP to Static, using a static address of 192.168.1.100 and setting the gateway to xxx.xxx.xxx.1 as advised by the provider. No real difference, still cannot ping the guest from the host or vice versa and no Internet access from the guest. Then I tried NAT. The host automatically set the IP address to 192.168.132.128 with a gateway of 192.168.132.2 Now the guest has Internet access out and when I do a VNC to the host and open Firefox with 192.168.132.128 I can see the hosted website okay but I still cannot get into it from outside. I mentioned that I'm a bit confused about IPtables and VMware port forwarding, what I meant is that I'm not sure whether IPtable forwarding should be set to the IP address of the guest interface (192.168.132.128 in this case) or the gateway address 192.168.132.2 . I have a feeling that I'm missing something very simple here, can anybody tell me what it is?

• What are possible results/side effects if replication between DC's in a Windows domain is unable to occur?

  There's plenty of administration literature out there how to properly manage Windows servers. But in dealing with real life, things don't always occur like you want them to. In Microsoft's Windows Server 2003 Administrator's Companion, out of 1400+ pages, theres only one page that I could find when it comes up setting up additional domain controlers. They make it sound seemless and don't reveal a whole lot on what happens if "peer" DC's are unable to replicate. Down to the specific issue at hand, we had a DC go down about a month ago due to a bad RAID controller. There was nothing critical that waranted imediate attention, so bringing it back up got put on the back burner. A month later, we get the DC back up and running and everyting seemed ok. The next day, nobody is able to logon complaining that the "user does not exist" or "unable to establish a trust relationship". Knowing that I had just put the downed DC back on the network, I immediately took it back off the network and had everybody restart the workstations. After that, exchange was fine, shares became available, and everybody was able to log in. After doing some event log swimming, it would appear that everything started due to replication issues on the SYSVOL. I've read where you can force replication, but that would mean putting it back on the network. I am afraid to put the DC back on the network in fear that something else could go wrong. So, what other issues could one expect to run into where two DC's are unreplicated for over a month?

  I have a couple of columns in jqGrid with edittype="select". How can I read the option value of the value currently selected in a particular row? e.g.: When I provide the following option, how do I get "FE" for FedEx, etc. editoption: { value: “FE:FedEx; IN:InTime; TN:TNT” } getRowData() for the rowId/cellname returns only the text/displayed component of the select. If I set a "change" data event on the column, the underlying fires change events only on mouse clicks, and not keyboard selects (there's numerous references to generic selects and mouse/keyboard issues). Bottomline, when a new value is selected, I need to know the option value at the time of the change, and also prior to posting to the server.

• Help with Design for Vacation Tracking System (C#/.NET/Access/WebServices/SOA/Excel) [closed]

  I have been tasked with developing a system for tracking our company's paid time-off (vacation, sick days, etc.) At the moment we are using an Excel spreadsheet on a shared network drive, and it works pretty well, but we are concerned that we won't be able to "trust" employees forever and sometimes we run into locking issues when two people try to open the spreadsheet at once. So we are trying to build something a little more robust. I would like some input on this design in terms of maintainability, scalability, extensibility, etc. It's a pretty simple workflow we need to represent right now: I started with a basic MS Access schema like this: Employees (EmpID int, EmpName varchar(50), AllowedDays int) Vacations (VacationID int, EmpID int, BeginDate datetime, EndDate datetime) But we don't want to spend a lot of time building a schema and database like this and have to change it later, so I think I am going to go with something that will be easier to expand through configuration. Right now the vacation table has this schema: Vacations (VacationID int, PropName varchar(50), PropValue varchar(50)) And the table will be populated with data like this: VacationID | PropName | PropValue -----------+--------------+------------------ 1 | EmpID | 4 1 | EmpName | James Jones 1 | Reason | Vacation 1 | BeginDate | 2/24/2010 1 | EndDate | 2/30/2010 1 | Destination | Spectate Swamp 2 | ... | ... I think this is a pretty good, extensible design, we can easily add new properties to the vacation like the destination or maybe approval status, etc. I wasn't too sure how to go about managing the database of valid properties, I thought of putting them in a separate PropNames table but it gets complicated to manage all the different data types and people say that you shouldn't put CLR type names into a SQL database, so I decided to use XML instead, here is the schema: <VacationProperties> <PropertyNames>EmpID,EmpName,Reason,BeginDate,EndDate,Destination</PropertyNames> <PropertyTypes>System.Int32,System.String,System.String,System.DateTime,System.DateTime,System.String</PropertyTypes> <PropertiesRequired>true,true,false,true,true,false</PropertiesRequired> </VacationProperties> I might need more fields than that, I'm not completely sure. I've used this code to implement the Web Services: public class VacationConfigurationService : WebService { [WebMethod] public void UpdateConfiguration(string xml) { // Above code goes here } } Which was pretty easy, although I'm still working on a way to validate that XML against some kind of schema as there's no error-checking yet. I also created a few different services for other operations like VacationSubmissionService, VacationReportService, VacationDataService, VacationAuthenticationService, etc. The whole Service Oriented Architecture looks like this: And because the workflow itself might change, I have been working on a way to integrate the WF workflow system with MS Visio, which everybody at the office already knows how to use so they could make changes pretty easily. We have a diagram that looks like the following (it's kind of hard to read but the main items are Activities, Authenticators, Validators, Transformers, Processors, and Data Connections, they're all analogous to the services in the SOA diagram above). The requirements for this system are: (Note - I don't control these, they were given to me by management) Main workflow must interface with Excel spreadsheet, probably through VBA macros (to ease the transition to the new system) Alerts should integrate with MS Outlook, Lotus Notes, and SMS (text messages). We also want to interface it with the company Voice Mail system but that is not a "hard" requirement. Performance requirements: Must handle 250,000 Transactions Per Second Should be able to handle up to 20,000 employees (right now we have 3) 99.99% uptime ("four nines") expected Must be secure against outside hacking, but users cannot be required to enter a username/password. Platforms: Must support Windows XP/Vista/7, Linux, iPhone, Blackberry, DOS 2.0, VAX, IRIX, PDP-11, Apple IIc. Time to complete: 6 to 8 weeks. My questions are: Is this a good design for the system so far? Am I using all of the recommended best practices for these technologies? How do I integrate the Visio diagram above with the Windows Workflow Foundation to call the ConfigurationService and persist workflow changes? Am I missing any important components? Will this be extensible enough to support any scenario via end-user configuration? Will the system scale to the above performance requirements? Will we need any expensive hardware to run it? Are there any "gotchas" I should know about with respect to cross-platform compatibility? For example would it be difficult to convert this to an iPhone app? How long would you expect this to take? • ASP.NET MVC - ValidationMessageFor

  Hi, I have asked this question on asp.net forums (http://forums.asp.net/t/1545006.aspx) but i had no valid answer therefore i'll try this here as well. I was working on migrating MVC1 app to MVC2 today and i have come across a problem while changing the ValidationMessage to ValidationMessageFor implementation. The below is the selectlist in my View <%=Html.DropDownListFor(model => model.SecurityQuestions[0].Question, "Some Security question", new { @class = "form_element_select" })%> The below code works fine and i can see the validation message came from modelstate. <%= Html.ValidationMessage("SecurityQuestions_0__Question")%> but this one does not work: <%= Html.ValidationMessageFor(model => model.SecurityQuestions[0].Question)%> SecurityQuestions is a generic list in my model public List<SecurityQuestion> SecurityQuestions { get; set; } Is this somewhat a bug in "ValidationMessageFor" or am i missing something here?

  I am trying to write a generic extension to turn a ManagementObjectCollection into a DataTable. This is just to make things easier for a startup script/program I am writing. I have ran into a problem with CimType. However it seems to me like there may be a better way, or even a .net function I am overlooking.

  I'm trying to deploy ASP.NET MVC 2 project (VS2010) to Win Server 2008 R2 It works perfectly on dev machine. But strange error occurs at Server 2008 R2: When .ascx file has header that uses generic type: <%@ Control Language="C#" Inherits="System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<MyProj.Web.Models.RangeViewModel>" %> Server reports Could not load type 'System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<MyProj.Web.Models.RangeViewModel>'. But when I declare somewhere in .cs file type like public class AA : System.Web.Mvc.ViewUserControl<MyProj.Web.Models.RangeViewModel> { } and use it instead in <%@ Control header. Then it works as it should. Am I missing something?

• What's the best way to handle the same shortcut in WPF and WinForms controls?

  I have a WPF application with the following KeyBinding on its main window: <KeyBinding Command="Commands:EditCommands.Undo" Gesture="CTRL+Z" /> <KeyBinding Command="Commands:EditCommands.Redo" Gesture="CTRL+Y" /> This makes the command respond to the shortcut fine. However, in all the places where I have embedded WinForms text boxes or rich text boxes, I've lost the ability to use those shortcuts. If I remove the above bindings, the WinForms shortcuts work fine. How can I support these shortcuts in both WinForms and WPF? I'd prefer a generic method since this problem is likely to affect many other commands with the same keybindings.

• WPF ComboBox Binding to non string object

  I'm using MVVM (MVVM Light Toolkit) and have a property on the view model which exposes a list of objects. The objects contain two properties, both strings, which correlate to an abbreviation and a description. I want the ComboBox to expose the pairing as "abbreviation - description". If I use a data template, it does this easily. I have another property on the view model which represents the object that should display as selected -- the chosen item in the ComboBox. I'm binding the ItemsSource to the list, as it represents the universe of available selections, and am trying to bind the SelectedItem to this object. I'm killing myself trying to figure out why I can't get it to work, and feeling more like a fraud by the hour. In trying to learn why this works, I created the same approach with just a list of strings, and a selected string. This works perfectly. So, it clearly has something to do with the typing... perhaps something in choosing equality? Or perhaps it has to do with the data template?
