• Creating VSTO Excel Template fails

  I have been trying for ages in all sorts of ways (short of ritual incantations and sacrifices) to get Visual Studio Team Edition 2008 to allow me to create Office 2003 solutions, whether those be templates or documents. No matter what I try, I'm always presented with an error which basically says "You've got the wrong version of Office installed. Try installing something compatible". I have the complete installation of Office 2003 Pro installed along with the Office 2003 Primary Interop Assemblies (which I put on after I installed Office) and then VS2008TE as already mentioned. There has to be some reason why this refuses to work, but I'm out of ideas. Help appreciated.

• iPhone UIImage initWithData fails

  Hello all, I'm trying to code up an async image downloader. I use NSURLConnection to get the data into an NSMutableData and use that data once it is complete to initialize a UIImage. I checked the bytes and it downloads the entire image correctly (right number of bytes at least), however; when I call [UIImage imageWithData:data] and then check the properties of the image, it is zero width and a garbage number for height, in fact, same number no matter what the image is. I tried with bunch of different images, png, jpg, different urls, it always downloads the image completely but UIImage can't initialize with that data. What could I be doing wrong here? Thanks.

  Hi All, I have seen lot of reviews and have not been able to figure out how I can solve my problem.. Problem: Currently we have a page to upload the file from local machine to the respositry. It is currently using Struts upload. Now the current requirment is, Since users upload around 1gb of file, they are made to wait for a long time.. So they changed the requirment to browse the file and select the file to upload and hitting upload button should return to the control to next screen imediately.. But the upload process some how needs to be pushed at the backend and should do the upload and send out an email once the upload is complete.. I'm not able to figure out how to transfer the control to next page, when the upload is still running ... any idea or help will be appreicated.. Regards, Senny

• Controlling 3rd party program.

  Hi my program launches a 3rd party program with a few switches to update itself. Once these updates are complete I need to manually click save from the applications menu. This can be done via the keyboard (Alt Gr + M then Alt Gr + S) The application will take several seconds to load at which point the application will open maximised and the save option will be enabled. Can anyone suggest a method or example for doing such a thing? Monitoring a lauched process? Macro? Thanks.

  The question on validating jpegs on network transfer is very helpful. Could we take this question one step further? What if the image data is incomplete or corrupt from the server? The complete transport works, the MIME type is image/jpeg, the UIImage is constructed and non-nil but the renderer discovers inconsistencies in the data and the log shows "Bad Huffman code" or "premature end of data segment" How would I capture this error before tossing the UIImage into the view context and thereby getting a not-pretty image on the screen? Could I render it to a non-screen context and capture the error?

• C# winforms: DataSet with multiple levels of related tables

  Hi, I am trying to use DataSet and DataAdapter to "filter" and "navigate" DataRows in DataTables. THE SITUATION: I have multiple logical objects, e.g. Car, Door and Hinge. I am loading a Form which will display complete Car information including each Door and their respective Hinges. In this senario, The form should display info for 1 car, 4 doors and 2 hinges for each door. Is it possible to use a SINGLE DataSet to navigate this Data? i.e. 1 DataRow in car_table, 4 DataRow in door_table and 8 DataRow in hinge_table, and still be able to navigate correctly between the different object and their relations? AND, able to DataAdapter.Update() easily? I have read about DataRelation but don't really understand how to use it. Not sure if it is the correct direction for my problem. Appreciate any advise. • How do I upgrade my MacPorts Perl installation?

  I have installed MacPorts in my MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard. I hadn't explicitly installed perl there but I guess it either came installed with the default macports install or was installed as a dependency by any other port I installed. I want to upgrade the Perl v5.8.9 there with the latest stable Perl version. Whichever it may be currently (I see it is 5.12.2). So, my question is simply how do I do a complete replacement of the old Perl with the new in macports. Will sudo port upgrade perl5 work or do I need to do something else as well. I just wanted to make sure this was the right command so as to avoid screwing up my macports install.

• Asp.Net MVC and ajax async callback execution order

  I have been sorting through this issue all day and hope someone can help pinpoint my problem. I have created a "asynchronous progress callback" type functionality in my app using ajax. When I strip the functionality out into a test application I get the desired results. See image below: Desired Functionality When I tie the functionality into my single page application using the same code I get a sort of blocking issue where all requests are responded to only after the last task has completed. In the test app above all request are responded to in order. The server reports a ("pending") state for all requests until the controller method has completed.   I've taken programming as a hobby, studying it since I was 10 or so. 7 years to date, I've become progressivly good at C++, PHP, C#, Assembly, Lua, and the web languages such as HTML and CSS. Though I've never taken a class, I've been able to complete most, if not all of the questions from different "Programmer Interview Questions" articles and have participated in some small scale projects in the past. Summer starting yesterday for me, I've been thinking about how to keep busy while maybe earning some money along the way. Now, some kids mow lawns, others get fast food jobs, but what about programming jobs? Is there even such a thing?

  Is it possible to retrieve the complete message source (similar tu Unix Mbox format) using Zend_Mail_Storage_Pop3 from the Zend Framework? I'm using the following code to retrieve messages: $mail = new Zend_Mail_Storage_Pop3(array('host' => 'localhost', 'user' => 'test', 'password' => 'test')); echo $mail->countMessages() . " messages found\n"; foreach ($mail as $message) { echo "Mail from '{$message->from}': {$message->subject}\n"; } It looks like the $mail object contains the message already split up into fields (ie. headers, contents, etc.). Is there any way to retrieve the original message source? I would like to be able to store it so if I need to parse the message again using a different tool, I will have the necessary information.

• Java annotations for design patterns?

  Is there a project that maintains annotations for patterns? For example, when I write a builder, I want to mark it with @Builder. Annotating in this way immediately provides a clear idea of what the code implements. Also, the Javadoc of the @Builder annotation can reference explanations of the builder pattern. Furthermore, navigating from the Javadoc of a builder implementation to @Builder Javadoc is made easy by annotating @Builder with @Documented. I've being slowing accumulating a small set of such annotations for patterns and idioms that I have in my code, but I'd like to leverage a more complete existing project if it exists. If there is no such project, maybe I can share what I have by spinning it off to a separate pattern/idiom annotation project. • Flowplayer: Clicking on the player forces is to reload.

  Hey everyone, I've got this damn annoying bug (or wrong setting) that makes the player reload whenever it's clicked. It's set to play when you click, so when you click it, it reloads. The circle begins.... The reloading only happens in Firefox. In Safari (and I assume Chrome), the video opens in its own window. Not ideal, but it still plays. • Javascript regex only matching entire url as typing

  I'm trying to use javascript to find all URLs in a textarea as the person is typing (onkeyup). The problem that I'm having is in finding a regex to match the entire URL, I need it only to match all the URL's in the text area that are complete URLs. All of the existing regex expressions that I find through Google and through my own experiementing seem to match as soon as the user has typed the first part of the pattern. So, for example, if I'm typing and then start to type http://w, all of a sudden, it will match. I need to find a regex that will match and return an array of all the urls that are in the textarea, while also not matching unless the person has completed typing the full URL. Hopefully that makes sense! Thank you!

• managing library dependencies with Boost.Build and C++

  I want to develop a project which can be built on a bunch of different platforms. The project code will be in C++, what's the the best way to manage libraries? I plan on using bjam as the build system because I'm going to be depending on Boost and their unit testing framework as well. The two dependent libraries are Boost itself and FLTK. The possibilities that come to mind for library management are: include build artifacts (binaries) and headers for all supported platforms in-tree include complete source for all dependent libraries in-tree, and somehow script them as dependencies A combination of 1 and 2, like node.js does with v8 inform the user that they need to build the libraries themselves and then have them on the PATH or in some special directory, like libcurl does with its dependencies What is the best approach here? The project will probably not grow beyond a few thousand lines over the next six months, but I want to make the right choice here so that I don't have to come back and switch everything around later.

• Neither IE or Firefox respects the control values that are output

  I'm writing a survey designer asp.net mvc. It has buttons to move questions up and down. The buttons post the whole form back and the affected questions are swapped on the server. When the form returns the only thing that is changed are the values for each survey question. Both firefox and IE seem to ignore this change. Nothing is persisted to the database (until save) and url doesn't change so the post just returns the same view but I've stepped through my code to ensure the sequence of values being rendered in the view reflects the swap which is ok. However "view - source" doesn't show the change suggesting caching issue (maybe auto complete). I've tried autocomplete="off" in my form. Response.Cache.SetNoStore(); in my global.asax [System.Web.Mvc.OutputCache(NoStore = true, Duration = 0, VaryByParam = "*")] before my controller and the following in my page header NOTHING!!! This must be real common. Anyone got a clue?

• Any Java library for address extraction from emails?

  I'm looking for an Java open-source library which is able to extract address information from a (German) email (signature). The library should find name street city, city code/postal code email tel/fax address-parser.com is an commercial product, but a free (albeit simple) library would be great. stackoverflow.com/questions/16413/parse-usable-street-address-city-state-zip-from-a-string is asking for something similar, but my problem is broader because the address information is hidden in a complete email. And there isn't a solution either... Any ideas?

• How important is W3C XHTML/CSS validation when finalizing work?

  Even though I always strive for complete validation these days, I often wonder if it's a waste of time. If the code runs and it looks the same in all browsers (I use browsershots.org to verify) then do I need to take it any further or am I just being overly anal? What level do you hold your code to when you create it for: a) yourself b) your clients P.S. Jeff and company, why doesn't stack overflow validate? :) EDIT: Some good insights, I think that since I've been so valid-obsessed for so long I program knowing what will cause problems and what won't so I'm in a better position than people who create a site first and then "go back and fix the validation problems" I think I may post another question on stack overflow; "Do you validate as you go or do you finish and then go back and validate?" as that seems to be where this question is going

• How to create Server-side Progress indicator in Javascript

  Hey Guys, I want to create a section in my site, where a user has a few simple update buttons. Each of these update buttons will be going to the server, and will do a long crunching behind the scene. While the server crunches data, I want the user to have a some kind of progress indicator, like progress bar or textual percentage. I'm using jQuery as my javascript library, and CodeIgniter (PHP) as the server-side framework, if it's important... What I was thinking about is using PHP's flush() function to report progress status to jQuery, but I'm not sure that jQuery's ajax functions are reading the output before it's complete... So any advice/explanation would be useful and helpful! Thanks :)

• Sharepoint Foundation 2010 installation problems

  I'm having problems installing development machine for Sharepoint (Foundation) 2010. This is what I did so far on the same machine: Installed a clean Windows 7 x64 with 4GB of RAM without being part of any domain. Just a simple standalone machine. Enabled IIS related features as described here except IIS6 related ones (two of them) Installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Development Edition (DB Engine and Writer being enabled but not SQL Agent) Installed Visual Studio 2010 Premium Started installing Sharepoint Foundation 2010 with first extracting files, changing config to enable Windows 7 installation and then installed it as Server Farm (then Complete) to avoid installing SQL Express. Created a separate SPF_CONFIG local user with Logon on as a service right. Opened SPF Management Shell and run New-SPConfigurationDatabase so I am able to use a non-domain username (SPF_CONFIG that I created in the previous step) But all I get is this: The outcome after this error is: Database Sharepoint2010Config is created User SPF_CONFIG is added to SQL Server and attached to this newly created database as dbowner and checking SQL server security logins this user has following rights: dbcreator securityadmin public

  I want to put some compressed data into a remote repository. To put data on this repository I can only use a method that take the name of the resource and its content as a String. (like data.txt + "hello world"). The repository is moking a filesystem but is not, so I can not use File directly. I want to be able to do the following: client send to server a file 'data.txt' server compress 'data.txt' into a compressed file 'data.zip' server send a string representation of data.zip to the repository repository store data.zip client download from repository data.zip and his able to open it with its favorite zip tool The problem arise at step 3 when I try to get a string representation of my compressed file. • Objective-C Plugin Architecture Security (Mac, not iphone)

  I'm possibly writing a plugin system for a Cocoa application (Mac, not iphone). A common approach is the make each plugin a bundle, then inject the bundle into the main application. I'm concerned with the security implications of doing this, as the bundle will have complete access to the Objective-C runtime. I am especially concerned with a plugin having access to the code that handles registration and serial keys. Another plugin system we are considering is based on distributed notifications. Basically, each plugin will be a separate process, and they will communicate via distributed notifications only. Is there a way to load bundles securely (e.g. sandboxing)? If not, do you see any problems with using distributed notifications? Are there any other plugin architectures that would be better?
