• connecting to secure database from website host

  Hello all, I've got a requirement to both read and write data via a .net webservice to a sqlserver database that's on a private network. this database is currently accessed via a vpn connection by remote client software (on standard desktop machines) to get latest product prices and to upload product stock sales. I've been tasked with finding a way to centralise this access from a webservice that the clients then access, rather than them using the vpn route to connect directly to the database. My question is related to my .net service's relationship to the sqlserver database. What are the options for connecting to a private network vpn from a domain host in order to achive the functionality of allowing the webservice to both read and write data to the database. For now, I'm not too concerned about the client connectivity and security (tho i appreciate that this will have to be worked out too), I'm really just interested in discovering the options available in order to allow my .net webservice to connect to the private network in as painless and transparent a way as posible. The option of switching the database onto public hosting is not an option, so I have to work with the sdcenario as described above for now, unless there's a compelling rationale presented to do otherwise. thanks all... jim

• log4j rootLogger seems to inherit log level of other logger. Why?

What seems to be happening is that the level for SGSearch overrides the level set for the root logger somehow. I can't figure it out. I have confirmed that Log4J is reading then properties file I think it is, and no other (via the -Dlog4j.debug option)

• Postgres pgpass windows - not working

  DB: Postgres 9.0 Client: Windows 7 Server Windows 2008, 64bit I'm trying to connect remotely to a postgres instance for purposes of performing a pg_dump to my local machine. Everything works from my client machine, except that I need to provide a password at the password prompt, and I'd ultimately like to batch this with a script. I've followed the instructions here: http://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/static/libpq-pgpass.html but it's not working. To recap, I've created a file on the client (and tried the server as well): C:/Users/postgres/AppData/postgresql/pgpass.conf, where postgresql is the db user. The file has one line with the following data: *:5432:*postgres:[mypassword] (also tried explicit ip/dbname values, all asterisks, and every combination in between. (I've also tried replacing each '*' with [localhost|myip] and [mydatabasename] respectively. From my client machine, I connect using: pg_dump -h [myip] -U postgres -w [mydbname] [mylocaldumpfile] I'm presuming that I need to provide the '-w' switch in order to ignore password prompt, at which point it should look in the AppData directory on the server. It just comes back with "connection to database failed: fe_sendauth: no password supplied. Any insights are appreciated. As a hack workaround, if there was a way I could tell the windows batch file on my client machine to inject the password at the postgres prompt, that would work as well. Thanks.

  I have a simple html form. On php page. A simple list is placed on form. I submit this form (selected list items) to this page so it gives me page refresh. I want items which were POSTED to be selected after form was submited. How to do such thing? • Validation on ManyToManyField before Save in Models.py

  I have the following models: class Application(models.Model): users = models.ManyToManyField(User, through='Permission') folder = models.ForeignKey(Folder) class Folder(models.Model): company = models.ManyToManyField(Compnay) class UserProfile(models.Model): user = models.OneToOneField(User, related_name='profile') company = models.ManyToManyField(Company) What I would like to do is to check whether one of the users of the Application has the same company as the Application (via Folder). If this is the case the Application instance should not be saved. The problem is that the ManyToManyFields aren't updated until after the 'post-save' signal. The only option seems to be the new m2m_changed signal. But I'm not sure how I then roll back the save that has already happened. Another option would be to rewrite the save function (in models.py, because I'm talking about the admin here), but I'm not sure how I could access the manytomanyfield content. Finally I've read something about rewriting the save function in the admin of the model in admin.py, however I still wouldn't know how you would access the manytomanyfield content. I have been searching for this everywhere but nothing I come across seems to work for me. If anything is unclear, please tell me. Thanks for your help! Heleen

• Vim - show diff on commit in mercurial;

  In my .hgrc I can provide an editor or a command to launch an editor with options on commit. I want to write a method or alias that launches $ hg ci, it would not only open up message in Vim, but also would split window and there print out $ hg diff. I know that I can give parameters to vim by using +{command} option. So launching $ vim "+vsplit" does the split but any other options goes to first opened window. So I assume i need a specific function, yet I have no experience in writing my own Vim scripts. The script should: Open new vertical split with empty buffer (with vnew possibly) In empty buffer launch :.!hg diff Set empty buffer file type as diff :set ft=diff I've written such function: function! HgCiDiff() vnew :.!hg diff set ft=diff endfunction And in .hgrc I've added option: editor = vim "+HgCiDiff()" It kind of works, but I would like that splited window would be in right side (now it opens up in left) and mercurial message would be focused window. Also :wq could be setted as temporary shortcut to :wq<CR>:q! (having an assumption that mercurial message is is focused). Any suggestions to make this a bit more useful and less chunky? UPDATE: I found vim split guide so changing vnew with rightbelow vnew opens up diff on the right side.

• Producing a static HTML site from XML content

  I have a long document in XML from which I need to produce static HTML pages (for distribution via CD). I know (to varying degrees) JavaScript, PHP and Python. The current options I've considered are listed here: I'm not ruling out JavaScript, so one option would be to use ajax to dynamically load the XML content into HTML pages. Learn some basic XSLT and produce HTML to the correct spec this way. Produce the site with PHP (for example) and then generate a static site. Write a script (in Python for example) to convert the XML into HTML. This is similar to the XSLT option but without having to learn XSLT. Useful information: The XML will likely change at some point, so I'd like to be able to easily regenerate the site. I'll have to produce some kind of menu for jumping around the document (so I'll need to produce some kind of index of the content). I'd like to know if anyone has any better ideas that I haven't thought of. If not, I'd like you to tell me which of my options seems the most sensible. I think I know what I'm going to do, but I'd like a second opinion. Thanks.

• Updating section in ConfigParser (or an alternative)

  I am making a plugin for another program and so I am trying to make thing as lightweight as possible. What i need to do is be able to update the name of a section in the ConfigParser's config file. [project name] author:john doe email: [email protected] year: 2010 I then have text fields where user can edit project's name, author, email and year. I don't think changing [project name] is possible, so I have thought of two solutions: 1 -Have my config file like this: [0] projectname: foobar author:john doe email: [email protected] year: 2010 that way i can change project's name just like another option. But the problem is, i would need the section # to be auto incremented. And to do this i would have to get every section, sort of, and figure out what the next number should be. The other option would be to delete the entire section and its value, and re-add it with the updated values which would require a little more work as well, such as passing a variable that holds the old section name through functions, etc, but i wouldn't mind if it's faster. Which of the two is best? or is there another way? I am willing to go with the fastest/lightweight solution possible, doesn't matter if it requires more work or not.

• Cisco access-list confusion

  I'm having troubles implementing access-lists on my asa 5510 (8.2) in a way that makes sense for me. I have one access-list for every interface i have on the device. The access-lists are added to the interface via the access-group command. let's say I have these access-lists access-group WAN_access_in in interface WAN access-group INTERNAL_access_in in interface INTERNAL access-group Production_access_in in interface PRODUCTION WAN has security level 0, Internal Security level 100, Production has security level 50. What i want to do is have an easy way to poke holes from Production to Internal. This seams to be pretty easy, but then the whole notion of security levels doesn't seam to matter any more. I then can't exit out the WAN interface. I would need to add an ANY ANY access-list, which in turn opens access completely for the INTERNAL net. I could solve this by issuing explicit DENY ACEs for my internal net, but that sounds like quite the hassle. How is this done in practice? In iptables i would use a logic of something like this. If source equals production-subnet and outgoing interface equals WAN. ACCEPT.

  Hey Guys, I am wondering if there is anyway we can achieve this. I heard different things about Silverlight 4 , Java Script or Active X control but not seen any demo of code for any of them. Does anyone know any web component that is available or how to write one. We really like capture client's USB drive via Web and read/write data on it. This has to work for ANY Operating system in Any web browser. Thanks UPDATED What about WPF in browser mode...I read that I can host my wpf apps inside browser and sort of like smart client. Here is a great example of doing this via silverlight 4 but author mentions about possibility of accessing USB on MAC via 1) Enable executing AppleScripts. This option will let us have the same amount of control on a mac machine as we do on a windows machine. 2) Add an overload to ComAutomationFactory.CreateObject() that calls the “Tell Application” command under the scenes and gets a AppleScript object. This option would work extremely well for Office automation. For any other operating system feature, you’ll have to code OS access twice.  I did not quite understand it. Has any tried this ?

  First, sorry for my english and my poor knowlodge of this subject. I have a dedicated server placed in Germany (windows 2008 R2) and I live in spain. I would like to access internet from my home computer (Windows 7 Pro x64), trough my server in Germany, so I can use a German IP, what I need some times. I have complete acces in to both computers, but I just don't know where to start. (My knwoledge is limited to software development :/ ) I'd like to know where to start, if I need to create a VPN and so.. Thanks in advance! • How do people handle foreign keys on clients when synchronizing to master db

  Hi, I'm writing an application with offline support. i.e. browser/mobile clients sync commands to the master db every so often. I'm using uuid's on both client and server-side. When synching up to the server, the servre will return a map of local uuids (luid) to server uuids (suid). Upon receiving this map, clients updated their records suid attributes with the appropriate values. However, say a client record, e.g. a todo, has an attribute 'list_id' which holds the foreign key to the todos' list record. I use luids in foreign_keys on clients. However, when that attribute is sent over to the server, it would dirty the server db with luids rather than the suid the server is using. My current solution, is for the master server to keep a record of the mappings of luids to suids (per client id) and for each foreign key in a command, look up the suid for that particular client and use the suid instead. I'm wondering wether others have come across thus problem and if so how they have solved it? Is there a more efficient, simpler way? I took a look at this question "Synchronizing one or more databases with a master database - Foreign keys (5)" and someone seemed to suggest my current solution as one option, composite keys using suids and autoincrementing sequences and another option using -ve ids for client ids and then updating all negative ids with the suids. • Abstract factory pattern on top of IoC?

  I have decided to use IoC principles on a bigger project. However, i would like to get something straight that's been bothering me for a long time. The conclusion that i have come up with is that an IoC container is an architectural pattern, not a design pattern. In other words, no class should be aware of its presence and the container itself should be used at the application layer to stitch up all components. Essentially, it becomes an option, on top of a well designed object-oriented model. Having said that, how is it possible to access resolved types without sprinkling IoC containers all over the place (regardless of whether they are abstracted or not)? The only option i see here is to utilize abstract factories which use an IoC container to resolve concrete types. This should be easy enough to swap out for a set of standard factories. Is this a good approach? Has anyone on here used it and how well did it work for you? Is there anything else available? Thanks!

• Parallel Tasking Concurrency with Dependencies on Python like GNU Make

  I'm looking for a method or possibly a philosophical approach for how to do something like GNU Make within python. Currently, we utilize makefiles to execute processing because the makefiles are extremely good at parallel runs with changing single option: -j x. In addition, gnu make already has the dependency stacks built into it, so adding a secondary processor or the ability to process more threads just means updating that single option. I want that same power and flexibility in python, but I don't see it. As an example: all: dependency_a dependency_b dependency_c dependency_a: dependency_d stuff dependency_b: dependency_d stuff dependency_c: dependency_e stuff dependency_d: dependency_f stuff dependency_e: stuff dependency_f: stuff If we do a standard single thread operation (-j 1), the order of operation might be: dependency_f -> dependency_d -> dependency_a -> dependency_b -> dependency_e \ -> dependency_c For two threads (-j 2), we might see: 1: dependency_f -> dependency_d -> dependency_a -> dependency_b 2: dependency_e -> dependency_c Does anyone have any suggestions on either a package already built or an approach? Than as a default I am loading one of the values in drop down which is '10'. It loads too as default value.   I have an SSL certificate which is valid for multiple (sub-) domains. In Apache I have configured this as follows: In /etc/apache2/apache2.conf NameVirtualHost <my ip>:443 Then for one named virtual host I have <VirtualHost <my ip>:443> ServerName ... SSLEngine on SSLCertificateFile ... SSLCertificateKeyFile ... SSLCertificateChainFile ... SSLCACertificateFile ... </VirtualHost> Finally, for every other site I want to be accessible over HTTPS I just have a <VirtualHost <my ip>:443> ServerName ... </VirtualHost> The good news is that it works. However, when I start Apache I get warning messages [warn] Init: SSL server IP/port conflict: Domain A:443 (...) vs. Domain B:443 (...) [warn] Init: SSL server IP/port conflict: Domain C:443 (...) vs. Domain B:443 (...) [warn] Init: You should not use name-based virtual hosts in conjunction with SSL!! So, my question is: how should I be configuring this? Clearly from the warning messages I am doing something wrong (although it does work!), however, the above configuration was the only one I could get to work. It is somewhat annoying as the configuration files have an explicit dependence on my IP address.

  Got a question regarding best practices for doing parallel web service calls, in a web service. Our portal will get a message, split that message into 2 messages, and then do 2 calls to our broker. These need to be on separate threads to lower the timeout. This would allow us to have a bit more control over what is going on, but could add additional overhead. Another option brought up would be 2 asynchronous calls and manage the returns through a loop. When the calls are completed (success or error) the loop picks it up and ends. The portal service will be called about 50,000 times a day. I don't want to gold plate this sucker. I'm looking for something light weight. The services that are being called on the broker do have time out limits set, and are already heavily logged and audited, so I'm not worried on that part. This is .NET 2.0 , and as much as I would love to upgrade I can't right now. So please leave all the goodies of 2.0 out please.

• DDD and MVC Models hold ID of separate entity or the entity itself?

  If you have an Order that references a customer, does the model include the ID of the customer or a copy of the customer object like a value object (thinking DDD)? I would like to do ths: public class Order { public int ID {get;set;} public Customer customer {get;set;} ... } right now I do this: public class Order { public int ID {get;set;} public int customerID {get;set;} ... } It would be more convenient to include the complete customer object rather than an ID to the View Model passed to the form. Otherwise, I need to figure out how to get the vendor information to the view that the order references by ID. This also implies that the repository understand how to deal with the customer object that it finds within the order object when they call save (if we select the first option). If we select the second option, we will need to know where in the view model to put it. It is certain they will select an existing customer. However, it is also certain they may want to change the information in-place on the display form. One could argue to have the controller extract the customer object, submit customer changes separately to the repository, then submit changes to the order, keeping the customerID in the order.

  hello all, i am new to the filestream option in sql server 2008, but i have already understand how to open this option and how to create a table that allow you to save files. let say my table contains: id,name, filecontent i tried to insert an html file (that has hebrew chars/text in it) to this table. i'm writing in asp.net (c#), using visual studio 2008. but when i tried to read back the content , hebrew char becomes '?'. the actions i took were: 1. i read the file like this: // open the stream reader System.IO.StreamReader aFile = new StreamReader(FileName, System.Text.UTF8Encoding.UTF8); // reads the file to the end stream = aFile.ReadToEnd(); // closes the file aFile.Close(); return stream; // returns the stream i inserted the 'stream' to the filecontent column as binary data. i tried to do a 'select' to this column and the data did return (after i coverted it back to string) but hebrew chars become '?' how do i solve this problem ? what I should pay attention to ? thanks, gadym

In other words I want something like this: If the vhost has no explicit ssl config use cert for domain3 (/usr/share/ssl/certs/certificate.crt) Notes: 1.- I for sure will be setting more vhosts in the future 2.- I know (and don't care) of the ssl warnings the browser will show (hostname mismatch) If this possible? how?

• Silverlight Business Application template with WCF is throwing warning.

  Hi, I am using the Silvelight Business Application template. I wrote a function which uses Membership.getUserList function to return the user list. I tried exposing it as Service using WCF. But when I try to compile the client side code it throws a warning saying "Client Proxy Generation for user_authentication.Web.Service1 failed'. Why does it happen?   The players: my home computer, running Linux with an X server running. (Call it HOME.) a remote site, to which I can connect over the internet using a VPN. (SITE) a Linux computer at the remote site, to which I can connect with ssh -X and nicely have X clients displaying on my local server. (MIDDLE) a very old Irix machine (an Onyx) at the remote site, which has no SSH server (therefore I can't ssh -X to it), only an ssh client. (ONYX) Purpose I need to run an X11 application on the ONYX machine, and see the GUI on HOME. I think I stumble upon xauth issues. So far The current situation is: ? HOME connects to SITE ? A vncserver starts on MIDDLE:7 ? vncviewer on HOME connects to vncserver on MIDDLE ? ONYX starts a forwarding ssh session to MIDDLE: ssh -TfN -L 6007:127.0.0.1:6007 MIDDLE ? DISPLAY=localhost:7 xclient on ONYX fails with Xlib: connection to "127.0.0.1:7.0" refused by server I do know that the forwarding (6007:127.0.0.1:6007) succeeds. A previous attempt was: ? The content that is generated needs to be bound by a variety of functions (such as disabling form buttons and click events that return ajax data.
