• Send bulk email from SQL Server 2008

  Hi, I am relatively new to databases,so please forgive me if my query sounds trivial. I need to send bulk email to all the contacts listed in a particular table. The body of the email is stored in a .doc file which begins as Dear Mr. _. The SQL server will read this file, append the last name of the contact in the blank space and send it to the corresponding email address for that last name. Any thoughts on how to proceed with this? Any insights,suggestions,tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  Hi, I am required to work on a php project that requires the database to cater to multiple users. Generally, the idea is similar to what they have for carbonmade or basecamp, or even wordpress mu. They cater to multiple users, whom are also owners of their accounts. And if they were to cancel/terminate their account, anything on the pages/database would be removed. I am not quite sure how should I design the database? Should it be: separate tables for individual user account separate databases for individual user account or otherwise?   On a Joyent accelerator I'm working with, Ruby and Rubygems were installed when the server was initially setup using Cool Stack. The existing version of Rubygems is version 0.9.2. When it comes to upgrading RubyGems using the 'sudo gem install rubygems-update' and 'sudo update_rubygems' commands, it results in the following error: ./lib/rubygems.rb:124: uninitialized constant Gem::RbConfig (NameError) from setup.rb:24:in `require' from setup.rb:24 Without having much success in rectifying this issue, I wanted to install a fresh version of RubyGems alongside this one. As this is a production server, I want to minimize the amount of environment changes I make on the server. If I install a fresh version of RubyGems from source, how do I set this new installed version of RubyGems as the default version of RubyGems to use?

• How do I stop IIS7 from putting out its own 404 before my MVC app gets a chance to handle it?

  I have an ASP.NET MVC 2 application, which has an Application_Error event handler in global.asax. In this, I'm detecting the case where the Exception type is HttpException and the HTTP code is 404, and redirecting to my own 404-handling page. This works fine on my Cassini development server, but now I'm trying to move it over to my production server which has IIS7. When I request a non-existent URL, IIS7 is showing its own 404 page, and so far as I can tell, my Application_Error method is never called. How do I fix that?

• Spring security annotations with EL -- requires debug information compiled in?

  I am considering using Spring Security annotations for my application, with the EL (expression language) feature. For example: @PreAuthorize("hasPermission(#contact, 'admin')") public void deletePermission(Contact contact, Sid recipient, Permission permission); I need the EL capability because I have built my own ACL implementation. However, to use this capability with the "#contact" type arguments, the Spring documentation says this: You can access any of the method arguments by name as expression variables, provided your code has debug information compiled in. This begs two questions: It is acceptable to have a production application commercially distributed with debug info in it? If not, is there any way around this? Thanks for any guidance on this!

• Java exception: "Can't get a Writer while an OutputStream is already in use" when running xAgent

  I am trying to implement Paul Calhoun's Apache FOP solution for creating PDF's from Xpages (from Notes In 9 #102). I am getting the following java exception when trying to run the xAgent that does the processing -- Can't get a Writer while an OutputStream is already in use The only changes that I have done from Paul's code was to change the package name. I have isolated when the exception happens to the SSJS line: var jce: DominoXMLFO2PDF = new DominoXMLFO2PDF(); All that line does is instantiate the class, there is no custom constructor. I don't believe it is the code itself, but some configuration issue. The SSJS code is in the beforeRenderResponse event where it should be, I haven't changed anything on the xAgent. I have copied the jar files from Paul's sample database to mine, I have verified that the build paths are the same between the two databases. Everything compiles fine (after I did all this.) This exception appears to be an xpages only exception.

  If I want to integrate DotNetOpenAuth (primary for people to use their Google/Yahoo accounts to login, not act as provider) into my existing site, is this one line control good enough? <rp:OpenIdTextBox ID="OpenIdTextBox1" runat="server" /> Say, if a user wants to login as Google, I can simply set the textbox to "https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/id" and then they can login. I tried it with my Google account, it seems working and I can get the token from HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name. Is this "one line" solution secure enough for production? or is it a "must" that I have to use "OpenIdSelector" or "OpenIDLogin" control? I also opened the .net template and some samples, they are very complicated. There are PAPE policies, xrds.aspx (for discovery), ConsumerKey + ConsumerSecret...etc. As a newbie, I am very confused. Any tips on this will be really appreciated. Thanks

• Having two ODP.NET (ODAC) versions in the same server

  Hello: Some months ago, a colleague of mine installed ODAC 11.106.21 in a server using XCOPY and then he developed many applications that use this client without problems (in test and production windows servers). Past week, I developed an application under ODAC 11.1.07.20. When I asked him to install these new ODAC version using XCOPY in a different folder and then include my application in the test server, he answered me that I should use ODAC 11.106.21 because he could have troubles with his applications. So I would like to know: 1) If it is really possible to have two different ODAC versions in one server. 2) If the answer is positive, how can I firmly ensure to my colleague that he will not have troubles with his applications? 3) If the answer is positive, is this necessary to do some kind of configuration in the server? • How to compare 2 similar strings letter by letter and highlight the differences?

  We have 2 databases that should have matching tables. I have an (In-Production) report that compares these fields and displays them to the user in an MS-Access form (continuous form style) for correction. This is all well and good except it can be difficult to find the differences. How can I format these fields to bold/italicize/color the differences? "The lazy dog jumped over a brown fox." "The lazy dog jumped over the brown fox." (It's easier to see the differences between 2 similiar text fields once they are highlighted in some way) "The lazy dog jumped over a brown fox." "The lazy dog jumped over the brown fox. " Since we're talking about a form in MS Access, I don't have high hopes. But I know I'm not the first person to have this problem. Suggestions?

• Rails Action and Fragment Caching during Development?

  I'm just starting to get into Rails caching and am wondering how to test whether or not caching is working in my development environment. I have set these two config variables for both the development (temporarily) and production environments: config.action_controller.perform_caching = true config.action_controller.page_cache_directory = File.join(RAILS_ROOT, 'public', 'cache') And my controller basically looks like this (using the resource_controller gem): class EventsController < Spree::BaseController resource_controller caches_page :index index.response do |format| format.html format.xml { render :xml => @collection.to_xml } end # ... end If I do that, I get these files: public/cache/events.html public/cache/events.xml But when I change caches_page to caches_action, I don't see any generated files and am not sure how to tell if the response has been cached. What do I need to know to know that this is working? I've read the docs and related, the rails caching guides, the railscast, and a few other docs, but I'm still wondering where everything is stored. • Passenger: RailsBaseURI case sensitive?

  I used Passenger to deploy a RoR app to a sub URI on my domain. The problem I'm facing is that the sub URI seems to be case sensitive. Navigating to http://mydomain.com/RailsApp resolves fine. However, if I go to http://mydomain.com/railsapp, http://mydomain.com/railsApp, or any other variation, I get a 404 error. How can these requests using different casings get resolved correctly? • Statistical approach to chess?

  Reading about how Google solves the translation problem got me thinking. Would it be possible to build a strong chess engine by analysing several million games and determining the best possible move based largely (completely?) on statistics? There are several such chess databases (this is one that has 4.5 million games), and one could potentially weight moves in identical (or mirrored or reflected) positions using factors such as the ratings of the players involved, how old the game is (to factor in improvements in chess theory) etc. Any reasons why this wouldn't be a feasible approach to building a chess engine?

• Performance benefits of upgrading Richfaces to newer version

  I have a client that's running an application based on JBoss 4.0.5, Seam 1.2 and RichFaces 3.0.1. Their system is having performance problems due to the fact that a lot of data is coming back from the server to be displayed on screen and it seems like the rendering of that data is taking forever. The data brought back is displayed in a tabbed interface, but the tabs aren't currently being loaded individually, but all at once. I'm trying to build up a case to present to the client on the benefits of upgrading to never version of RichFaces, which, as I understand it, has added a great number of features related to tabbed panels and being able to use ajax to page the data and load the chunks you actually need to display at the moment, and not the rest that's in other tabs. The move to a newer version of RichFaces will also result in never versions of Jboss and Seam, as the current production build of RichFaces 3.2.1 requires JSF 1.2. IF anyone has some suggestions or experience on performance of current versions RichFaces, paging, etc, I would really appreciate some feedback.

• Django-pyodbc mssql/freetds server connection problems on linux

  Error: ('IM002', '[IM002] [unixODBC][Driver Manager]Data source name not found, and no default driver specified (0) (SQLDriverConnectW)') I'm migrating from developing on a windows development machine to linux machine in production and I'm having issues with the freetds driver. As far as I can tell that error message means it can't find the driver. I can connect via the cli via sqsh and tsql. I've setup my settings.py as such. 'bc2db': { 'ENGINE': 'sql_server.pyodbc', 'NAME': 'DataTEST', 'USER': 'appuser', 'PASSWORD': 'PASS', 'HOST': 'bc2.domain.com', 'options': { 'driver': 'FreeTDS', } }, Does anyone have any mssql experience with djano? do I have to use a dns? • PostgreSQL Invalid Value for Parameter Warning

  In PostgreSQL 8.4.3, I get this error when logging on to one of my databases (adus): WARNING: invalid value for parameter "default_text_search_config": "tsc_markets" which makes sense since executing the command \dF does not list any such configuration (and only lists the defaults). However, when I ask psql to show me the current value: adus=# show default_text_search_config; I get default_text_search_config ---------------------------- pg_catalog.english (1 row) In addition, the postgresql.config file has the entry: # default configuration for text search default_text_search_config = 'pg_catalog.english' plus, there is only one (user) defined schema that I use (also called adus) in this database. What's going on?

• Using ELMAH and URLRewritingNet Together

  I have ELMAH setup on my production server and it has done a fantastic job of letting me know about any niggles - as well as any creative SQL injection! I've decided to introduce URl Rewriting and went for http://www.urlrewriting.net/ in the end. It was nice and easy to setup and it's doing exactly what I want with the customer-facing site. The problem is ELMAH. Because I've set the urlrewritingnet node in my config like so: <urlrewritingnet rewriteOnlyVirtualUrls="true" contextItemsPrefix="QueryString" defaultPage = "default.aspx" defaultProvider="RegEx" xmlns="http://www.urlrewriting.net/schemas/config/2006/07" > ...ELMAH likes to do this to it's axd links; http://www.mydomain.com/elmah.axd/stylesheet/default.aspx Does anyone have any idea how to either a) stop the re-writer following the .axd; or b) add rules to the re-writer to get ELMAH to work Any ideas? • ORM in the realworld

  I am begining a new project that i think will last for some years. Am in the point of deciding the ORM framework to use (or whether to use one at all). Can anyone with experience tell me whether orm frameworks are used in realworld applications. The problem i have in mind is this: The orm tool will generate for me tables and columns etc as i create and modify my entities. However, after the project has gone live and is in production, certain database changes will not be possible. Can this hinder the advancement of the project. If i had used a framework like ibatis for example, i know i would only need to adjust the sql statements based on the database changes. Can someone tell me whether ORM tools have survived the live environment. At my office, we use java based ERP that was done long ago and it was never done using any ORM framework. Regards. Josh

  Hey guys, My company purchased Visual Studio Pro 2008 last year, which had a 'free' copy of SQL Server Developer, which I have been using for development. We are wanting to upgrade the copy of developer edition to enterprise (As we now want to use the server as a production server), and have purchased the licenses for this. Now... Morally we're in the clear... However does this comply with MS licensing T&C's? We have Developer installed how we want it, and don't really want to uninstall SQL Server Dev just to install SQL Server Ent. Is there a way to transfer the license key to our Enterprise key without having to reinstall? Thanks, JD

• Is there any er diagram tool in Windows that I can use to connect to a MySQL 4.1 database in Unix?

  I have a few test databases in some Unix SUSE 8 servers and initially the plan was to find some tools which can directly create the ERD straight from the server until someone told me that I can find tools to connect from the Windows PC straight to the Unix MySQL database. So I saw MySQL query analyzer which can do this but unfortunately there are no options to create an ERD. So are there any tools, preferably open source or free which can do this? I've done some basic googling but didn't know what is the exact terms to use to search for this and have so far found nothing useful yet. Updates: I just found out that the latest version of workbench doesn't work MySQL 4.1 Enterprise Edition which is the version that I have! And I try to use fabFORCE DBDesigner but I can't even connect at all using that one :( What can work for this version of MySQL?

• Persist an object that is not marked as serializable

  Hi, I need to persist an object that is not marked with the serializable attribute. The object is from a 3rd party library which I cannot change. I need to store it in a persist place, like for example the file system, so the optimal solution would be to serialize the object to a file, but since it isn't marked as serializable, that is not a straight forward solution. It's a pretty complex object, which also holds a collection of other objects. Do you guys have any input on how to solve this? The code will never run in a production environment, so I'm ok with almost any solution and performance.

• Huge EAR deployment

  Hello all, I'm trying to figure out how to deploy a huge (40-50 MB) EAR file to the server through a rather slow VPN connection. The EAR contains EJB and WAR projects created in Glassfish, and 90% of the file size is from external dependency libraries used. Has anyone came up with a strategy for elegant deployment to production system from Netbeans, where the deployment (over the network) is done only for what is really needed (i.e. just one WAR, not the entire EAR, or just one lib, not the entire libraries subproject). Related to the first point, how to separate external dependency libs from project in Netbeans, so that the project compiles on development machine, but when the EAR/WAR/EJB is created it does not contain all the dependency JARs, which are making it huge. Perhaps we need to write custom ant script? Start using maven? Thank you all for kind answers, Bozo
