• Sql database dumps failing every night

  Hey guys, I have sql05 and my maintenance plan which backs up a database to an external storage SAN, has been failing every night. Here is my error: Executing the query "BACKUP DATABASE [master] TO DISK = N'\\192.168.x.x\vmbackup\server\dbbackup\master_backup_201004222300.bak' WITH NOFORMAT, NOINIT, NAME = N'master_backup_20100422230002', SKIP, REWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10 " failed with the following error: "Cannot open backup device '\\192.168.x.x\vmbackup\server\dbbackup\master_backup_201004222300.bak'. Operating system error 5(Access is denied.). BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly. I googled this error and tried adding permissions to the backup device for network service as recommended at experts exchange, no dice. Does anyone have any ideas?

  So, I am writing code to parse and IP Address expression and turn it into a regular expression that could be run against and IP Address string and return a boolean response. I wrote the code in C# (OO) and it was 110 lines of code. I am trying to compare the amount of code and the expressiveness of C# to F# (I am a C# programmer and a noob at F#). I don't want to post both the C# and F#, just because I don't want to clutter the post. If needed, I will do so. Anyway, I will give an example. • What sort of things can cause a whole system to appear to hang for 100s-1000s of milliseconds?

  I am working on a Windows game and while rendering, some computers will experience intermittent pauses ("hitches" for lack of a better term). When profiled they appear in seemingly random places in the code. Eventually I noticed that it wasn't just my process that was affected, but (seemingly) every process on the system. All of the threads in my application hitch at once. The CPU utilization drops during these hitches and it appears as if most processes make no progress. This leads me to believe this may be an Operating System or Driver issue, but it only occurs while playing the game (and only on some systems). What sort of operations might the operating system be doing that would require the kernel to pause all user threads and block. Some kind of I/O? At first I thought of paging but my impression is that would only affect a single process, no? Some systems in use: Windows, DirectX (3d), nVidia cards (unknown if replicates on ATI), using overlapped io for streaming

• How is Magento using the module_name tag elements in the module config file

  I found here that Magento is using these tags as custom config variables, but I still cannot understand where are they used and how. For example the Wishlist module has wishlist (same name as the module) xml tag in the config.xml file in which it defines: <item> <product_attributes> <visibility/> <url_path/> <url_key/> </product_attributes> </item> Where is this module using these configurations? Also if I was to build payment method, I have to add in my custom module config.xml a tag for sales and then for quote and so on... • How to share datastores between multiple exchange servers?

  I have an Exchange 2003 box that is seriously overstressed. I want to transfer its duties to a new and faster box. I don't cannot suffer downtime, so I have to do this stuff live. Here's what I plan to do: Install Exchange 2003 on the new server Set up the new server, so it will accept requests from users for their mailboxes I want to do as little manual set up as possible, because that 'll eat up my time and is too error prone Than I want to transfer my datastores one by one to the new server and have those users (once the datastore in the new server is up and running) to get their data from the new server (without them noticing) I don't have to transfer all the datastores, some of them need to stay on the old box (because I'm still waiting for extra HD space to arrive from the supplier) What steps do I need to follow to do this? The new box has never seen this domain before, the old exchange server is not the DC, we have a dedicated DC.

  Hi, I would like to develop a web application in java/spring/hibernate serving as a business platform that I could connect plugins to (i.e. CRM plugin, ware plugin, sales plugin). Those plugins could be dependent of other plugins in a tree manner. The parent project would be packaged as war having all the basic configuration and looks (spring configs, css, scripts), ready to go user and group management, security settings, etc. All together I would like it to behave and look a bit like Joomla, but built using different tools for different purposes. And I have a few questions concerning that project: Do you know of any open source projects offering such a platform ready to go? If not is maven applicable for managing those plugins? What is the best way to package and deploy those plugins? And the last but not least, basically is this the right way to go or is a dead end and it would be better to create a separate web app for those business needs?

  I plan to use git for hosting my projects on my server. I've read about cgit, git-daemon, and I more or less decided to use those tools. But general use is still kind of confusing for me. What do I need to set up on the server, to push my files onto it. And when the files on the server are newer as the files on my computer, how do I merge them? Also, I use, say, two computers where I develop. How do I merge from one computer to the other? Also, when two people are working on the same project, how do they merge their local repos from one another? As you probably can tell by now, I come from SVN, but I've worked with Mercurial and now I'd like to test git.

• What is the best way to shutdown hard disk?

  Right Now I'm using hdparm command in unix to shut down the hard disk but there are few issues with it. when it wakes back up it consumes lots power. Is there any other way to do it? Many times when I put my hard disk to sleep, I can see few bursts at the beginning and then after a while it goes to sleep. I think its because of the journaling system in ubuntu (which I use) Have anybody encountered that? What would be the best linux/unix operating system (eg: ubuntu/centos/redhat) to work on extensive hard disk operations? I would highly appreciate if you could share the problems you encountered while doing this operation.

• Synchronous communication using NSOperationQueue

  I am new to Objective C programming. I have created two threads called add and display using the NSInvocationOperation and added it on to the NSOperationQueue. I make the display thread to run first and then run the add thread. The display thread after printing the "Welcome to display" has to wait for the results to print from the add method. So i have set the waitUntilFinished method. Both the Operations are on the same queue. If i use waitUntilFinished for operations on the same queue there may be a situation for deadlock to happen(from apples developer documentation). Is it so? To wait for particular time interval there is a method called waitUntilDate: But if i need to like this wait(min(100,dmax)); let dmax = 20; How to do i wait for these conditions? It would be much helpful if anyone can explain with an example. • SQL server db and printing confusion.

  I have billing application based on C# WPF, Screenshot is here. as you can see there is a datagrid, programmatically binded. this datagrid contains lists of item going to be billed. So when user reaches "Print memo" part (in stack panel 2) i have to update listed items in stock table and insert entries in sales table and finally print the memo. I want to know is there any speedy way to so because as user gives print command I have to clear datagrid which holds product lists and start accepting new lists. if you could provide few code or link, will be really helpful.. thanks.........

• How to safely operate on parameters in threads, using C++ & Pthreads?

  Hi. I'm having some trouble with a program using pthreads, where occassional crashes occur, that could be related to how the threads operate on data So I have some basic questions about how to program using threads, and memory layout: Assume that a public class function performs some operations on some strings, and returns the result as a string. The prototype of the function could be like this: std::string SomeClass::somefunc(const std::string &strOne, const std::string &strTwo) { //Error checking of strings have been omitted std::string result = strOne.substr(0,5) + strTwo.substr(0,5); return result; } Is it correct to assume that strings, being dynamic, are stored on the heap, but that a reference to the string is allocated on the stack at runtime? Stack: [Some mem addr] pointer address to where the string is on the heap Heap: [Some mem addr] memory allocated for the initial string which may grow or shrink To make the function thread safe, the function is extended with the following mutex (which is declared as private in the "SomeClass") locking: std::string SomeClass::somefunc(const std::string &strOne, const std::string &strTwo) { pthread_mutex_lock(&someclasslock); //Error checking of strings have been omitted std::string result = strOne.substr(0,5) + strTwo.substr(0,5); pthread_mutex_unlock(&someclasslock); return result; } Is this a safe way of locking down the operations being done on the strings (all three), or could a thread be stopped by the scheduler in the following cases, which I'd assume would mess up the intended logic: a. Right after the function is called, and the parameters: strOne & strTwo have been set in the two reference pointers that the function has on the stack, the scheduler takes away processing time for the thread and lets a new thread in, which overwrites the reference pointers to the function, which then again gets stopped by the scheduler, letting the first thread back in? b. Can the same occur with the "result" string: the first string builds the result, unlocks the mutex, but before returning the scheduler lets in another thread which performs all of it's work, overwriting the result etc. Or are the reference parameters / result string being pushed onto the stack while another thread is doing performing it's task?   I'm setting up a website that (ideally) would allow users to access other users' homepages with a url in the format "www.mysite.com/ThisLanham" where 'ThisLanham' is the username. The username begins with a letter and can consists of any alphanumeric character along with an underscore, hyphen, or period. So far, the redirection has worked perfectly when I ignore usage of the period character. The following code handles that request: RewriteRule ^([a-zA-Z][0-9a-zA-Z-_]*)/?$ Page/?un=$1 [NC,L] However, I've tried a number of ways it check for the period as well, but all have resulted in a 500 Internal Server Error.   How to schedule a task X minutes after Windows Server 2003 starts? In "Scheduled Tasks" one can specify "When my computer starts" but I see no way to specify delay. What I am trying to achieve: there is a service (JIRA) that even though dependent on SQL Server service still doesn't wait long enough for SQL Server to become fully operational. So JIRA service fails to connect to the database and needs to be restarted manually after each server reboot. My plan is to add "SC stop" and "SC start" commands for JIRA service 3 minutes after server starts.

• Can you resize all mac windows at once? (e.g. when docking)

  I've recently bought a Henge Dock, and like the ability to plug my MacBook in and instantly reconnect to all my peripherals (external monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.). The only problem is that when I dock or undock, all of my windows are left at the wrong size (either too big or too small) and I have to manually resize them, one by one. Not the end of the world, but ... isn't there an easier way? I've seen Cinch and Sizeup, but they seem to only work on one window (the current app). I looked at the Automator as a possible way to do this, but it didn't seem to have any window operations. I also tried the AppleScript listed here, but it put the windows in wacky places.

• Hyper-V: determine the guest's name given the GUID

  How would I go about determining the guest's name given its GUID or vice-versa, preferably with only the Hyper-V/Server Core stock install at hands? Rationale: I am in favor of having a repository of dirty tricks to revert to when in great need. To immediately quiesce all (storage) operations of a VM guest without losing the state, I used to run kill 17 <all VM's virtual processes> (signaling SIGSTOP) and resumed afterwards using kill 19 <all VM's virtual processes> (signaling SIGCONT) in ESXi/vSphere shell. I tried the same technique with Hyper-V using Process Explorer's "Suspend" functionality on the vmwp.exe processes and it seemed to work. I have yet to find a way for easily identifying the processes to suspend, though - the vmwp command line is only listing a GUID.

What issues will I run into? I plan on using 2 power strips and having them all externally powered from the wall. I will use a USB hub to plug in all the drives. I need drive access time to be as fast as possible. I am using Ubuntu Linux(64 bit). Will I be able to mount 10 drives?

  I received a letter from Autodesk asking for a "License Assessment". I understand it as a software audit. They plan to do it remotely. The thing is, I'm a freelancer, I don't use any Software Asset Mangment software, and I just recently swap out my hard drive for a new one, and did a complete clean install, and then I received this request from Autodesk. There is almost nothing on my hard drive now. What do software auditors do when they experience this? Will they (are they allowed) to contact my clients (that info is all over the web..) to get information since they found nothing here?

• How can I get all my itunes files from multiple computers onto my new PC?

  Managing my itunes files (music,video,tv shows, iphone apps) is a really hard task and I have not had much luck yet. If I had a single PC for the rest of my life with the same hard drive, it would work great but infortunately it cannot be that simple. I just build a new PC as my old hard drive crashed with all my itunes purchased songs, video, etc. So is there anyway to get itunes to recognize that I own all them and let me re-download everything? As I see it so far, it knows what I own by my itunes account login (it knows if I purchased a file or not ever) but does not seem to let you just re-download everything to a new PC or new hard drive. I realize I should of had backups but I didn't. My backup plan is a work in process and it is getting much better but that doesnt help with my situation at the moment. So I am asking for any help, ideas of how to retrieve all my previous itunes purchases?

  Question As a general practice, is it a good idea to use multiple TLDs for the name servers? How should I choose between which TLD would be a good candidate for being the root server for my NS name? More Info I am switching over 800 DNS zones to an outsourced DNS provider. I originally planned on setting the zone names to nsX.company.com, but think it would be best to have multiple TLDs such as .net , .org and .info Since I plan on supporting DNSSec at company.com I think all the 1st tier Name servers must support it as well. Part of the inspiration for this question came from our provider UltraDNS. • Best way to partition 1 TB (Linux and Windows 7)

  Is there an intelligent way to partition 1 TB and be prepared for resizing/adding/deleting partitions? I was thinking about LVM, but as far as I remember, Windows 7 can't be installed on logical volume right? For now my plan is: - ~150 GB for Windows 7 and other stuff (Visual Studio..., maybe I'll split it 100/50 or something like that) - simple NTFS - 850 GB = LVM - disk for Linux (Ubuntu) and other stuff virtual machines, etc. I'm mostly interested in how and what tools should I use to get easy in maintain partitions for both systems.

  I ordered a new computer with 8GB RAM with the plan to run Windows 7, 64Bit. Turns out now, that I need to run a 32Bit OS (XP or 7) due to some software which does not run on 64Bit yet (not even with any of the available compatibility settings / modes). Is there anything I can do with the memory above 4GB in this scenario? I'm willing to consider creative solutions like running a hypervisor under XP that offers the memory as a RAM-Disk for swapping etc. ? The software that does not run on 64Bit is CISCO VPN (there seems to be a half-working solution for that) and CISCO IP phone / webcam integration "CISCO Unified Video Advantage" (there is apparently no solution for that).

  I am creating a cube with the following tables: Customer CustomerID, Name Customer Rep CustomerID, RepID Rep RepID, Name The important thing here is that there is a many to many relationship between Reps and Customers. I want to be able to ask the question "How much sales for customers working with rep 'A'?" In the data source view i set up the relationships between both customerid columns and both repid columns. I set up the rep attribute in the dimension builder and when I try to build the cube I get this error: Errors in the high-level relationship engine. the 'Rep' table that is required for a join cannot be reached based on the relationships in the data source view.

  I need to secure a dedicated server for intranet use, the server is managed so will have software based security, but what other security should be considered for enterprise level security? The intranet is a host for an ECM (Alfresco) managing and storing sensitive documents. As the information is sensitive we are trying to make it as secure as reasonably possible (requirement in UK law). We plan to encrypt the data on the database. It will be connected to via SSL encryption. Should we consider Hardware firewall, Private lan between the application server and database server?

• Updating shared files across computers

  I have a file server running Windows Server 2008 and a couple of laptops running Windows 7 on a network. There are a large number of files that all users will need access to. My plan is to have the files on both the server and the laptops because the users will need to access the files in places with no Internet access. I also want any changes made to the files on any of the laptops to propagate to the server and then propagate to the other laptops whenever they connect to the network. Should I do this with a scheduled batch script with a few xcopy commands or is there a better way to do it?
