• How does process of updating code with Continous Integration work?

  I want to draw a model of process of updating the source code with the use of Continous Integration. The main issue is I don't really understand how it works when there are several programmers working on various aspects of the code at the same time. I can't visualize it in my mind. Here's what I know but I might be wrong: New code is sent to repository. Continous Integration server asks Version Control System if there is a new code in repository. If there is than CIS executes tests on the code. If tests show there are problems than CIS orders VCS to revert back to working wersion of the code and communicates it to programmer. If tests are passed positively it compiles the repository code and makes new build of a game? New build is made not after ever single change, but at the end of the day I believe? Are my assumptions above correct? If yes, does it also work when there are several programmers updating repository at once? Is this enough to draw a model of the process in your opinions or did I miss something? Also, what software would I need for above process? Can you guys give examples for CIS software and VCS software and whatever else I need? Does CIS software perform code tests or do I need another tool for that and integrate it with CIS? Is there a repository software?

  We live in Europe and are releasing commercial software in multiple countries. Besides of the licensing issues (GPL/LGPL/...) we have a question about patents. I know that if you're in the US, before you release software, you have to check if there aren't any patents you're infringing upon. I also know most of these patents or usually irrational and form a heavy burden on developers/software engineers. Now, as far as I know, EU rules are lots more ratinal, but there has been lobbying to also apply the same rules in EU. http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com http://www.stopsoftwarepatents.eu So what's the deal actually ? • To what extent should code try to explain fatal exceptions?

  I suspect that all non-trivial software is likely to experience situations where it hits an external problem it cannot work around and thus needs to fail. This might be due to bad configuration, an external server being down, disk full, etc. In these situations, especially if the software is running in non-interactive mode, I expect that all one can really do is log an error and wait for the admin to read the logs and fix the problem. If someone happens to interact with the software in the meantime, e.g. a request comes in to a server that failed to initialize properly, then perhaps an appropriate hint can be given to check the logs and maybe even the error can be echoed (depending on whether you can tell if they're a technical guy as opposed to a business user). For the moment though let's not think too hard about this part. My question is, to what extent should the software be responsible for trying to explain the meaning of the fatal error? In general, how much competence/knowledge are you allowed to presume on administrators of the software, and how much should you include troubleshooting information and potential resolution steps when logging fatal errors? Of course if there's something that's unique to the runtime context this should definitely be logged; but lets assume your software needs to talk to Active Directory via LDAP and gets back an error "[LDAP: error code 49 - 80090308: LdapErr: DSID-0C090334, comment: AcceptSecurityContext error, data 525, vece]". Is it reasonable to assume that the maintainers will be able to Google the error code and work out what it means, or should the software try to parse the error code and log that this is caused by an incorrect user DN in the LDAP config? I don't know if there is a definitive best-practices answer for this, so I'm keen to hear a variety of views.

• Mutually beneficial IP/copyright clauses for contract-based freelance work

  I have a copyright section in the contract I give to my clients stating that I retain copyright on any works produced during my work for them as an independent contractor. This is most definitely not intended to place arbitrary restrictions on my clients, but rather to maintain my ability to decide on how the software I create is licensed and distributed. Almost every project I work on results in at least one part of it being released as open source. Every project I work on makes use of third-party software released in the same fashion, so returning the favour is something I would like to continue doing. Unfortunately, the contract is not so clear when it comes to defining the rights of the client in the use of said software. I mention that the code will be licensed to them, but do not mention specifics about exclusivity, ability to produce derivatives etc. As such, a client has raised concerns about the copyright section of my contract, and has suggested that I reword it such that all copyrights are transferred entirely to the client on final payment for the project. This will almost certainly reduce my ability to distribute the software I have created; I would much prefer to find a more mutually beneficial agreement where both our concerns are appeased. Are there any tried and true approaches to licensing software in this kind of situation? To summarise: I want to maintain the ability to license (parts of) the software under my own terms, independently of my relationship with the client; with some guarantee to the client that no trade-secrets or critical business logic will be shared; giving them the ability to re-use my code in their future projects; but not necessarily letting them sell it (I'm not sure about this, though...what happens if they sell their business and the software along with it?) I realise that everyone's feedback is going to be prefixed with "IANAL", however I appreciate any thoughts you might have on the matter.

• Windows Start Menu Not Staying on Top

  Hey everyone. I've had this problem since Windows Vista. I did a clean install with Windows 7 and hoped it would fix the problem. Also swapped out the video card just to rule out a strange driver issue. Here's what's happening. After running for some period of time (usually a few hours), the Start button/orb will loose it's "Chrome" and turn into a plain button that just says "Start." It will work fine for a while, but then the start menu will just stop showing. Additionally, when I hit Win+D to show the desktop, the entire taskbar completely disappears. I can get it back usually by moving/minimizing windows that may be overlapping where the start menu should show. Otherwise, it requires either a full reboot or I'll end up killing & restarting the explorer.exe process. • LSI 9285-8e and Supermicro SC837E26-RJBOD1 duplicate enclosure ID and slot numbers

  I am working with 2 x Supermicro SC837E26-RJBOD1 chassis connected to a single LSI 9285-8e card in a Supermicro 1U host. There are 28 drives in each chassis for a total of 56 drives in 28 RAID1 mirrors. The problem I am running in to is that there are duplicate slots for the 2 chassis (the slots list twice and only go from 0 to 27). All the drives also show the same enclosure ID (ID 36). However, MegaCLI -encinfo lists the 2 enclosures correctly (ID 36 and ID 65). My question is, why would this happen? Is there an option I am missing to use 2 enclosures effectively? This is blocking me rebuilding a drive that failed in slot 11 since I can only specify enclosure and slot as parameters to replace a drive. When I do this, it picks the wrong slot 11 (device ID 46 instead of device ID 19). Adapter #1 is the LSI 9285-8e, adapter #0 (which I removed due to space limitations) is the onboard LSI. After getting in contact with a very knowledgeable Supermicro tech, they provided us with a tool called Xflash (doesn't appear to be readily available on their FTP). The first 2 enclosures logical ID is partially masked out where the 3rd one (which has a correct unique enclosure ID) is not. We pointed this out to Supermicro and were able to confirm that this address is supposed to be set during manufacturing and there was a problem with a certain batch of these enclosures where the logical ID was not set. We believe that the RAID controller is determining the ID based on the logical ID and since our first 2 enclosures have the same logical ID, they get the same enclosure ID. We also confirmed that 0000007F is the default which comes from LSI as an ID. The next pointer that helps confirm this could be a manufacturing problem with a run of JBODs is the fact that all 6 of the enclosures that have this problem begin with 00E. I believe that between 00E8 and 00EE Supermicro forgot to program the logical IDs correctly and neglected to recall or fix the problem post production. Fortunately for us, there is a tool to manage the WWN and logical ID of the devices from Supermicro: ftp://ftp.supermicro.com/utility/ExpanderXtools_Lite/. Our next step is to schedule a shutdown of these JBODs (after data migration) and reprogram the logical ID and see if it solves the problem. Update 06/28/12 #2: I just discovered this FAQ at Supermicro while Google searching for "lsi 0000007f": http://www.supermicro.com/support/faqs/faq.cfm?faq=11805.   I have a Dell Multimedia Keyboard, similar to this one: It has many non-standard keys, like the small circular ones across the top, and the "Multimedia" keys above INSERT/HOME/PAGE_UP. They can be rebound through simple registry entries. Note that answering this question doesn't necessarily require any knowledge about the keyboard or rebinding the keys: I can add, for any given key, a "ShellExecute" entry, and it will simply execute the following command as if it was typed at a Command Prompt. (I'm aware I dumbed that down rather significantly, but bear with me. I'm not really a Windows guy myself.) I use the volume knob for it's intended purpose, to change volume. I would like to change, however, a different key, to "reset" the Windows volume level back to exactly 50%, or, as it refers to it, "50", on it's 0-100 scale. I'm looking for the "program" (what I would type at a command prompt? these are still just Sys32 programs in the PATH, aren't they?) that, I imagine, would take arguments, to change Sound/Volume settings under Windows 7. Perhaps, for clarification, something that might take the form "C: SetVolume -slevel 50" or something.

• Using WebDAV for automated downloads

  I currently manage a number of sites (at one point about a dozen, currently four, but soon growing into the dozens or hundreds) that serve a piece of software to clients at their remote locations. Our web server is Windows SBS Server 2k3, and the remote servers are Windows Server 2k3.When we have new versions of the software, I upload this new software to a specific directory and rename it; each time the clients boot, they pull their software from that specific directory. With just a few sites, it's no problem for me to RDP in and copy the files over. As the number grows, this will quickly become quite unwieldy. So I'm thinking that WebDAV would be part of a solution, so that I could simply push the newest version to our server (Windows SBS Server 2003) and make it available to the sites to grab. However, on the remote server side, what are some suggestions for automating the download? I only want the servers to download the files during downtime (between 3 AM and 9 AM), and I only want them to download if there is a new version available. I had thought of writing a program that checked the files on the WebDAV server at a regular interval, compared a hash of the current software to a hash of the software on the server, and only downloaded if they were different, but I'm wondering if there is something I am unaware of that can automate the process.

• Multiple Devices connecting to VPN on CentOS server

  I am looking for a solution as to what would be the VPN software for multiple OSes and Devices. I currently have 15 systems to connect to a VPN. I was using Hamachi from LogMeIn but their lack of Android support really upsets me, and their limited support for Linux OSes is also a let down. 90% of my systems are Ubuntu 11+ systems, only 2 are Windows XP. But I also have a few people, maybe 3 that need to connect to it from Android devices. This is where Hamachi has let me down and I want to move to my own VPN solution. The server would be a simple VPS running CentOS. So I need some VPN software that allows connection of those to a Linux based server. I wanted to go with OpenVPN, but I am under the opinion that in any OS you have to have their software to connect to the VPN. Ubuntu supports VPN's out of the gate, but OpenVPN requires extra software to be installed, I don't want this if I can help it. Same with Windows and same with Android. Plus android mostly requires rooted devices for OpenVPN, at least from what I've read. I was looking at maybe L2TP, but I'm not sure how easy it is to get Ubu systems connected with it as I haven't found much on the subject, let alone Window's XP machines. I know Android connects out of the gate to it. I don't know much about L2TP but I know it's a pain to get running in CentOS from what I have read. Now the last option is some sort of software for PPTP but I've never read anything on it and don't know if all systems are compatible with it. What would be your solution to these devices and multiple OSes? OpenVPN seems to be my heading I just don't like it that it always requires software to run and rooted Android Devices. Any solutions for this and install solutions? Maybe a different OS for the server like Ubuntu would make another type of VPN easier?

• What characters are illegal in Cisco IOS username secret passwords?

  I am using username secret to add users with encrypted passwords to our switches and firewall. I have been battling with the same switches and firewall for a couple of hours trying to get securely generated hard passwords for all admins. Sometimes, the passwords would go into config, but wouldn't work for login. According to the documentation for enable secret a password must not begin with a number and ? has to be entered as Ctrl-V then ? to escape it. I followed that and still got passwords I could not use sometimes. There was no error when I ran username, but the password would be rejected on login by some, but not all of the switches. They are all WS-C2960-48PST-L. The passwords it didn't like contained back ticks "`" (that character under tilde ~ under Esc). The "misbehaving" switches are running: Cisco IOS Software, C2960 Software (C2960-LANBASEK9-M), Version 12.2(50)SE5, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1) The "working" switches are running: Cisco IOS Software, C2960 Software (C2960-LANBASEK9-M), Version 12.2(46)SE, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2). The "misbehaving" switches are running a newer IOS, so this suggests a regression introduced somewhere between 12.2(46)SE and 12.2(50)SE5. I was unable to find any evidence of this being intentional in the release notes for 12.2(50)SE. I would like to avoid this next time the passwords are changed :) What characters are illegal in Cisco IOS username secret passwords? Thank you for your help :)

• Why do I need to set up Autologon values in registry twice before it works and can i fix this?

  Background: As part an automated testing suite I am building, I need to set up Autologon on my virtual machines 'on demand'. By on demand, I mean that I don't want to necessarily pre-configure my VM or any snapshot to have Autologon set up already, for security reasons and also a huge business case. My solution so far: I'm copying a script to the guest machine and then using Sysinternals PsExec to execute it. A diff between the registry states shows that the first time I run this, it is missing both the "1" for AutoAdminLogon, and also the DefaultPassword key. The second time I execute it, these values are correctly intact as I intended. So, what is going on here? Is this expected? This post claims in the end that it really all just works (the problem was that a logoff script was setting off the values). Doesn't seem to work for me however.

• Disable or remove filter driver for single HID device

  Running Windows XP in a corporate setting here. I have an issue where a filter driver is interfering with the functionality of different USB HIDs. For example graphics tablets do not respond while the filter driver is in place. I've also had the issue with foot pedals used with transcription software. My question is really two fold: A) what makes Windows use a filter driver on one HID but not another? B) when a filter driver is causing conflicts how can I disable it on the affected devices? Background I've previously narrowed down the issue to the filter driver by uninstalling the software (Funk Proxy Host) responsible for the filter driver. The software is a type of RDP we use here at work. (I might have even booted into safe mode and renamed the file, I forget). I believe the filter driver is present to disable or modify the use of the local keyboard and mouse while admin staff are assisting users. Either way I don't have the authority to just go uninstalling this software. As far as I can tell the software versions are the same, however I'm not sure if the device driver definitions are all the same as I don't know where these things would be located. To check for the presence of the filter driver I locate the hardware device in Device Manager, click Properties Driver tab Driver Details.... It shows up as ph32ihid.sys. Even though all machines are meant to have the same SOE and do have Funk Proxy Host installed I don't always have issues with the same HIDs. A few machines here the foot pedals without any issues. I've not had any machines work with the graphics tablet without uninstalling Funk software. Driver details I've just read up a bit more about filter drivers and found the drivers description in the registry under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ProxyHostHIDFilter" There it's called "Kernel-mode HID filter driver for the Proxy Host". Presumably I could also disable it here but that would be system wide which is probably not desirable?

• Korean characters not appearing in Korean Windows XP computer

  I am using a Korean software (with a partial English interface) in a Korean Version of Windows XP SP 3 However, in parts of the software, even when I change the interface to Korean, Korean letters show up as random characters, as shown here: This is happening at others parts of the software as well, and I am not sure what is the difference between the places where this is happening, and places where this is not happening. For example, a command button where Korean letters are showing up properly is shown below: This software is a video conferencing software and has a chat feature as well. When I type into the chat box, i can see the Korean letters appear properly at my side, but when I press Enter and send the message, it changes into random characters as shown above in the chat box. What could be the issue here? Could it be a missing font in my computer? Since this is a Korean Windows installation I was hoping everything would work properly by default. What can be done here? EDIT 1: I asked some other people who are using this software, and they think that the problem is at my end, and playing around with the Regional and Language Settings might solve the problem. Also, they suggested I install all the language packs related to Korean display. But it looks like all the language packs have been installed, and my location is set to Korea in Regional and Language Settings in Control Panel, and I still have this problem. Also, I have had similar problems with displaying Korean on an English Windows XP computer. This answer suggested some solutions, but I still do not quite understand exactly what I have to do (at that time I had not fixed the problem, as I later on changed the computer). If I follow that answer, what fonts exactly do I need to install?

• Simulate a DFS share for a user not on domain with a folder in path

  I have a consultant whose computer is not on the domain and needs to access various network resources. Unfortunately while adding a computer to the domain is a difficult bureaucratic process (and would disallow much of his development software from even running given the domain restrictions), we can allow him to have credentials to access network resources. As such, he accesses various network resources via NET USE etc. without using DFS. There is one piece of software which requires him to have the same hardcoded path as other domain users but that path is a DFS path which he can't map (i.e., the software checks the path at runtime and will only run if it matches the registered path and will reject it in the context of using a DFS versus conventional machine path) I was wondering if there's some method to simulate the DFS path without actually using DFS. e.g., the path the software needs to see is "\ABC\DFS\software\app.exe" whereas the non DFS path is "\DEF\Software\app.exe" while I could make his hosts file point DEF to ABC, I'm not sure if I can somehow make it point there with the DFS "folder" as well are there any methods for this short of making changes to the AD to allow him to use DFS or add him to the domain (both of which are politically/technically challenging sadly)?
