So what is the average performance and intensity of work of such a high class professionals expected by employers? • Laptop Hibernates after adapter is unplugged

  Hello i am experiencing a strange problem under Ubuntu 12.04. If I unplug the charger while my laptop is on,i don't see any messages but my laptop goes straight into a suspend or hibernate mode and it's a real pain to get it stable again afterwards. It always suspends (or hibernates) It always takes 2 attempts to restart it (press power button, it starts and it hibernates again, press power button and it starts and stays on) It sometimes has an effect on the wireless which doesn't come back clean and i either have to switch the wireless on and off a couple of times. I sometimes have to restart the laptop totally Is anyone else experiencing the same issues and if yes,is there any solution? Thank you in advance.

• ID Badge Access System for Building with Active Directory Integration [closed]

  I hope this is the right place for this question. So, we're looking into setting up a building access that uses badges or cards of some kind. I wanted to ask the users on here if they've had to do such setups and/or if they have recommendations? Is there maybe a system that integrates with Active Directory? I know one of the things our managers want to do is to be able to run reports on when people are entering the buildings. I'd appreciate any suggestions and thanks in advance!

• Working hours for a newbie

  This is not a very related software / hardware question, but it's too related to the Tech world. I started a work 3 months before, and I am about to finish this week, and my boss asked me to do a planning of what I've done so far, I think this is totally ok, but he is asking for what I did each day with the hours I spent in these days. This is a sample of what I sent him M T W T F week 29/06 to 03/07 compréhension et analyse du problématique * * architecture de l'application * * * which translates to first task, I spent Monday + Tuesday on, and the last W, T, and Friday. What he is asking for, is what I've done in each day, with the timing I spent on (obviously, I don't think I remember, and because for a programmer, there are no sequence tasks, I mean I change code in a class, then change it in another to fit with the new one and so far) So my question is: is what he asking normal? and if so how can I detail the planning for the 3 months. [update] I used the email account we use to test our software with the extern servers, and I got a good view of what I was doing in every day :), a generic view but it helped too much (PS: The boss doesn't know anything about programming, for him, it's like writing lines and get results back nothing more )

• Can't access unprotected .pst file in Outlook 2010

  My father has a Windows 7 x64 system with 32-bit Outlook 2010. He asked me to access his archived mail to get to some old mail. When going to open the file I'm asked for a password (he never applied one) and I get a message saying "password is incorrect. Re-Type password". Since he told me that he never set a password I tried opening the .pst with Nucleus, a tool that allows me to view the .pst's. Does anyone know what the deal is? With the free version of Nucleus we can't view the attachments.

• iPhone can't access webserver on lan

  I have Apache serving on 192.168.1.4:8888 on a Windows 7 computer. I can't view the website with iPhone/iPad's Safari. I have another linux computer and it can access the webserver or ping the address. Is there a problem with the apple devices? I have an app on the iphone capable of pinging. I ping the webserver's address and I get nothing. But I can ping the iPhone from the linux or windows computer.

• Forbidding or controlling "Hidden IT..." Who should write and maintain ad-hoc software applications?

  Bigger companies usually have the problem, that it is not possible to write all programs employees want (to save time and to optimize processes) due to a lack of staff and money. Then hidden programs will be created by some people having (at least some) coding experience (or by cheap students/interns...). Under some circumstances these applications will raise in importance and spread from one user to a whole department. Then there is the critical point: Who will maintain the application, add new features, ...? And this app is critical. It IS needed. But the intern has left the company. No one knows how it works. You only have a bunch of sources and some sort of documentation. Does it make sense to try and control or forbid application development done ad-hoc outside of the IT department (with the exception of minor stuff like Excel macros)?

  I recently attended a conference and met some insanely talented developers with mile-long lists of accomplishments. One puzzling thing I noticed about many of these wildly successful people is that a lot of their output (books, blogs, games, mobile apps) are done as hobby projects outside of their normal jobs. Not only this, but most of them were married, and some even with children. I'm absolutely baffled by this. My question is targeted to folks that are married, working full time, and also spend time outside of work on hobby projects or extra programming. The question is: How many hours do you put in programming outside of your normal job, and how do you balance it with your family life?

• Unable to access MySQL from MyPHPAdmin after setting root password in EasyPHP{WAMP}

  Am a new starter with WAMP and trying to play around my way using the EasyPHP setup. After successful setup on intial launch of MySQL, the page prompted me to set up ROOT password for security reasons. On setting the password, am no longer able to access MySQL. The error is : Error MySQL said: Documentation 1045 - Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO) Looked up on the net and tried the following options in the config.inc.php from the phpmyadmin foler: 1] Set the authetication to "http" so that it prompts to enter the username and password /* Authentication type */ $cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type'] = 'http'; 2] Set up the correct password in the config file $cfg['Servers'][$i]['password'] = 'myPwd'; None of them worked. Can anyone suggest a workaround to access MySQL? Am not fussed about not being able to use the root account but would like to CRUD on the database using other username. Thanks in advance.

• Cannot access MOSS site from within MOSS server

  I am trying to access my MOSS site through the browser on the web server itself. I am using the same URL that is used for external access to the site. When I hit it from outside the server, I can see most of the site, which has anonymous access, and can use a domain account to get into secure areas. When I hit it from within the server, I get prompted for a password, but no matter what I enter it seems to reject it and just presents another password dialog. Has anyone seen anything like this?

  I'm wondering if it's possible to access page JavaScript variables with Selenium. I have an application that's using a variable attached to the window object. It has a global scope and I can access it either with window._myvar, window['_myvar'], _myvar, this['_myvar'], this._myvar depending on the context. So I tried to get Selenium to echo it. As far as I understand, in Selenium IDE the context in which everything runs is selenium. I tried doing this.browserbot.getCurrentWindow()._myvar, this.browserbot.getCurrentWindow()[_myvar] to no avail. I get bumped with the following error Unexpected Exception: message -> eval(match[1]) is undefined. Anyone managed to access their page's JavaScript?

• Unable to Access Zend Server 5 CE after installation

  I have previously installed WAMP on my windows, and now I am trying to install Zend Server 5 CE 5.3.1 Win x86. During the installation of Zend Server, there is a step asking about: web server port : 80 zend server interface port : 10081 I kept to the default. After the installation, I tried to access http://localhost,and is able to see zend test page. But I am unable to access http://localhost:10081/ZendServer, it was stated as page not found. Is it a conflict of my WAMP and the Zend Server? I remembered stopping the apache for WAMP, before trying to access ZS. Could anyone please advise me how to fix it? Thank you.

  see also Is “Code Access Security” of any real world use? I want to get some other opinions on this... I like the idea of Code Access Security for desktop applications. But in the lifetime of .NET I have to admit I've never actually had a situation where CAS has actually blocked something to my benefit. I have, however, had many times where something as simple as sharing a quick .NET application across a mapped drive becomes an enterprise code access nightmare. Having to break out caspol.exe to create trusted path rules and having no clear way of knowing why something failed makes it seem like CAS adds way more frustration to the development and deployment process than it offers in security. I'd like to hear either some situations where CAS has actually helped more than hurt, or if there are other people out there frustrated with its current implementation and defaults.

• Why are access modifiers on web service proxy methods important

  I'm creating interface to an external web service with C# client generated from WSDL. And in this client class I have methods with signature like: public ResponseType InvokeMethod(RequestType request). I want to change its access modifier to protected, but then web service responds with "web service method name is not valid" exception. Do You know why is that so? I understand that maintaining method name can be important for some reasons, but why can't I change this access modifier? Shouldn't it be a matter of my code what access I want to give to this method? Thanks for all the answers in advance.

• Cannot Access Rails Server From Outside LAN

  Hello All This is my first post here. I have a rails server I'm running on a dedicated server that I have jail shell access to. I can start up a rails server and access it just fine using the text-based browser elinks running in that jail shell using both internal and public IP's. However, I cannot access the rails server from outside that chrooted environment. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be going on? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

• AD-Integrated DNS failure: "Access was Denied"

  I have a single Windows 2008 R2 server configured as a domain controller with Active Directory Domain Services and DNS Server. The DNS Server was recently uninstalled and reinstalled in an attempt to fix a (possibly unrelated) problem; the event log was previously flooded with errors (#4000, "The DNS Server was unable to open Active Directory...") which reinstalling did not fix. However, while before it was at least showing and resolving names from the local network (slowly), now it's showing nothing at all. (The original error started with a #4015 error "The DNS server has encountered a critical error from the Active Directory," followed by a long string of #4000 and a few #4004. This may have been caused when a new DNS name was recently added, but I can't be sure of the timing.) Attempting to manage the DNS through Administrative Tools > DNS brings up an error: The server SERVERNAME could not be contacted. The error was: Access was denied. Would you like to add it anyway? Selecting yes just puts a SERVERNAME item on the list, but with all the configuration options grayed out. I attempted editing my hosts file as per this post but to no avail. Running dcdiag, it does identify the home server properly, but fails right away testing connectivity with: Starting test: Connectivity The host blahblahblahyaddayaddayadda could not be resolved to an IP address. Check the DNS server, DHCP, server name, etc. Got error while checking LDAP and RPC connectivity. Please check your firewall settings. ......................... SERVERNAME failed test Connectivity Adding the blahblahblahyaddayaddayadda address to hosts (pointing at 127.0.0.1), the connectivity test succeeded but it didn't seem to solve the fundamental problem (Access was denied) so I hashed it out again. Primary DNS server is properly pointing at 127.0.0.1 according to ipconfig /all. And the DNS server is forwarding requests to external addresses properly (if slowly), but the resolving of local network names is borked.   Basically, I want to translate the following into Seaside Smalltalk: $(".myDiv").bind('click', function(e) { console.log(e); }); Besides that I don't want to console.log the event, but access it in my ajax callback. The most promising approach seemed to be something like html div onClick: (html jQuery ajax callback: [:v | self halt] value: (???); with: 'Foo'. But I couldn't find any way to access the event that caused the callback. Intuitively, I would try html jQuery this event for the ??? part, but the Seaside jQuery wrapper doesn't know any message that comes close to event. Any help is appreciated. There has to be away to access the event data...

• Cant access log files in production.

  I was trying to run my application and check for some output on the production.log. However Rails throws this error. Apache log Rails Error: Unable to access log file. Please ensure that /var/www/somefolder/someapp/log/production.log exists and is chmod 0666. The log level has been raised to WARN and the output directed to STDERR until the problem is fixed. I have performed the necessary chmod 666 production.log to make it work but I realized that the file is under root access. So my file permissions are -rw-rw-rw- 1 root root 20845 2010-03-18 01:18 production.log Im not sure how to allow Rails to access this file. Im fairly new to managing linux production env so I request you to excuse my ignorance.

I have never worked on linux and dont plan on working on it either - The only command I probably know is "ls" :) I am hosting my website on Eapps and use their cpanel to setup everything so never worked with linux. Now I have this one time case - where I need to provide access to a contractor to fix the CSS issues on my website. He basically needs FTP (read/write) access to certain folders. I tried to use "CssClass" property of the drop down list to assign a CSS class and then accessing that list using that class, but later I found out that the class changes when an element is selected, so my initial class replaced by a new class. I also cannot use the "ClientID" property because the part of code that access that list is not inside the page, but in a separate javascript file. So how can I access it ?

  For a while now, my team and I have been wrapping our data access layer in a web service facade (using WCF) and calling it from the business logic layer. Meanwhile, we could simply use the repository pattern where the business logic layer consumes the data access layer locally through an interface, and at any point in time, we can switch things out for it to hit a service instead (if necessary). The question is: When is it a good time to wrap the data access layer in a service facade and when isn't it? Right now, it seems like the main advantage is that other applications can consume the service, but if they are internal applications written in .NET then they can just consume the .NET assembly instead. Are there other advantages of having the DAL be wrapped in a service that I am unaware of?
