  • Unable to keep the connecting using a wireless bridge

    I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a dell inspiron desktop (core 2 duo) and am using wicd to manage my network/wifi. I've found that the WiFi card in the machine has trouble staying connected to my router (I believe this is a function of distance between the two), so I've taken an old Belkin F5d7231 wireless router and installed dd-wrt on it to use as a wireless bridge hoping that it will have better reception. I think everything up through the wireless bridge is working OK since I have no problems accessing the internet through it with my MacBook. The problem arises when I try to hook the ubuntu machine up to the wireless bridge. It will connect for a few minutes, but it will quickly disconnect without clear triggering event; it may be more likely to disconnect if there is a heavy traffic load going over it (could be something as simple as "cat big_text_file" in an ssh session). I've tried switching from dhclient to dhcpcd without much improvement.   • I have permanent connections to Canonical servers, what are they for and how can I turn them off?

    After the recent upgrade to 12, I notice permanent connections to canonical servers. Running netstat -tp gives: Foreign Address State PID/Program name mulberry.canonical:http CLOSE_WAIT 6537/ubuntu-geoip-p alkes.canonical.co:http CLOSE_WAIT 6667/python alkes.canonical.co:http CLOSE_WAIT 6667/python Why are there permanent connections and how could I stop this behavior? And if this is intentional, who is responsible? I would like to understand why this was done because to me it seems like a bad idea.

  • My computer stops seeing the other computers on my network

    I'm running Ubuntu 11.04. Sometimes my computer stops seeing the names of the other computers on my network. So I can no longer log into another computer by typing the hosting name e.g. ssh [email protected] I can still log in using the local network IP address. How can I get the first way to work again without rebooting? I know this problem is local to the computer. The other computers on my network can still see one another. But they can no longer see the computer I'm working on, not even by local ip address.

  • Remote Display Config.sh Using SSH

    How often I see people look to VNC, NXMachine, RDP, etc to get a windowing environment on a remote system.  These products are great and I use them too, but there is a fancy feature in SSH to help. ssh –X remoteserver This is a great feature for hooking into headless VirtualBox machines and remote displaying an install wizard. The remote server must have some lines put in the /etc/ssh/sshd_conf file: X11Forwarding yes X11DisplayOffset 10 The second line is optional, but the first is required.  Restart sshd (sudo /etc/init.d/ssh restart). Now I can ssh –X remote server Then run /opt/app/wls10.3.4/wlserver_10.3/common/bin/config.sh to build a new domain. Note: For some reason, the jdk that comes with WebLogic often fails to work on the remote display.  In that case, I modify the config.sh to just use /usr/bin/java (from openjdk-6-jre package).

  • The Oldest Big Data Problem: Parsing Human Language

    We’ve talked in previous weeks about the key goals of the new release of WebCenter are providing a Modern User Experience, unparalleled Application Integration, converging all the best of the existing portal platforms into WebCenter and delivering a Common User Experience Architecture.  We’ve provided an overview of Oracle WebCenter and discussed some of the other key goals in previous weeks, and this week, we’ll focus on how with the new release of Oracle WebCenter you can create composite applications and mashups.We recently talked with Sachin Agarwal, Director of Product Management of Enterprise 2.0 at Oracle around the topic of Composite Applications and Mashups. Oracle WebCenter provides a rich set of tools and capabilities for pulling in content, applications and collaboration functionality from various different sources and weaving them together into what we call Mashups. Mashups that also consists of transactional applications from multiple sources are specifically called Composite Applications. With the latest release of Oracle WebCenter one can develop highly productive tasked based interfaces that aggregate a related set of applications that are part of a business process and provide in context collaboration tools so that users don’t have to navigate away to different tabs to achieve these tasks. For instance, a call center representative (CSR), not only needs to be able to pull customer information from a CRM application like Siebel, but also related information from Oracle E-Business Suite about whether a specific order has shipped. The CSR will be far more efficient if he or she does not have to open different tabs to login into multiple applications while the customer is waiting, but can access all this information in one mashup.Oracle WebCenter Suite provides a comprehensive set of tooling that enables a business user to quickly aggregate together a mashup and wire-in different backend applications to create a custom dashboard. Not only does Oracle WebCenter supports a wide set of standards (WSRP 1.0, 2.0, JSR 168, JSR 286) that allow portlets  from other applications to be surfaced within WebCenter, but it also provides tools to bring in other web applications such as .Net Applications  as well as SharePoint webparts. The new Business Mash-up editor allows business users to take any Oracle Application or 3rd party application and wire the backend data sources or APIs to a rich set of visualizations and reuse them in mashups.  Moreover, Business users can customize or personalize any page using Oracle WebCenter Composer’s on-the-fly visual page editing features. Users access and select different resource components available in Oracle WebCenter’s Business Dictionary in order to add new content to the page. The Business Dictionary provides a role-based view of available components or resources, and these components can include information from a variety of enterprise resources such as enterprise applications, managed content, rich media, business processes, or business intelligence systems.   • EJB Persist On Master Child Relationship

    Let us take scenario where in users wants to persist master child relationship. Here will have two tables dept, emp (using Scott Schema) which are having master child relation.Model Diagram: Here in the above model diagram, Dept is the Master table and Emp is child table and Dept is related to emp by one to n relationship. Lets assume we need to make new entries in emp table using EJB persist method. Create a Emp form manually dropping the fields, where deptno will be dropped as Single Selection -> ADF Select One Choice (which is a foreign key in emp table) from deptFindAll DC. Make sure to bind all field variables in backing bean.Employee Form:Once the Emp form created, If the persistEmp() method is used to commit the record this will persist all the Emp fields into emp table except deptno, because the deptno will be passed as a Object reference in persistEmp method  (Its foreign key reference).   • Unity not running on startup

    OK, so Firefox was running extremely slow, I ran it in safe mode and still slow, so I rebooted and when she came back on, I wasn't at the regular Unity login, it was like a classic Windows login (where I had to enter my username and password manually, not a list of users). I logged in and only my desktop was visible (with icons and my wallpaper). Nothing else. I was able to open a terminal with Ctrl+ Alt+T and typed... sudo unity ...which got it up (albeit with the default icons on the launcher ex. I had unlocked Libre Office and it was back). In "Startup Applications..." there was absolutely nothing at all... This happens every time I reboot. Thunderbird de-synced from my Gmail but Pidgin is still connected. When I do Ctrl+Alt+L it locks the screen as normal, but I have no option to switch user. I have the only account on this computer but I cannot access the main login screen to get to my Guest account. I'm not very Ubuntu-savy, but it's pretty clear that I'm starting in some sort of safemode. I am on a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS (just installed it last night).

    As i occasionally work on Oracle ADF, i've decided to write tips on this Framework. Previous version of adf (10g) had a <afh:body> component to represent the body of your page which allowed to specify javascript events like onload or onunload. In ADF RC, the body (as well as html and head) is geneated by a single <af:document>. To implement the onXXXXX events you embed an <af:clientListener> within this <af:document> and specify property type="load" with the method to trigger.   Problem is that onunload property is not supported by th af:clientListener. So how do i do ? Well, a solution is to add this event during page load.   First step : Embed in your <af:document> the following : <af:clientListener type="load" method="addOnUnload()"/>   Second step : Add your unload event using this kind of script : <af:document>     <f:facet name="metaContainer">     <f:verbatim>     <script type="text/javascript">                 function addOnUnload(evt) {                       window.onunload=function()                               {                                   alert('Goodbye Word');                              }                    }     </script>     </f:verbatim>   When closing browser your event will be triggered as expected.

    Google has a program for webmasters called First Click Free. To implement First Click Free, you need to allow all users who find a document on your site via Google search to see the full text of that document, even if they have not registered or subscribed to see that content. The user's first click to your content area is free. However, once that user clicks a link on the original page, you can require them to sign in or register to read further. The user must be able to see the full content of a multi-page article. You can allow this by displaying all content on a single page to both Googlebot and users. Alternatively, you can use cookies to make sure that a user can visit each page of a multi-page article before being asked for registration or payment. Does Bing support anything like this?

  • What does intermittent "Input/output error" suggest?

    Lately my Ubuntu 12 system has started acting very strange. Sometimes the computer freezes and then unfreezes 2 minutes later, and other times when I try a basic command like less I get the error bash: /usr/bin/less: Input/output error. But this is intermittent too. Any suggestions? Also if I try sudo reboot and enter my password, I get sudo: unable to open /var/lib/sudo/plato/7: Read-only file system Before I used to be able to do sudo reboot fine. If I tail /var/log/syslog I do see these curious lines: .... ata1: softreset failed (device not ready) .... ata1: hard resettting link .... ata1: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0) What can I do to fix this?
