• UML diagrams that are actually pretty?

  I'm looking for a diagramming software that would produce good looking output. It doesn't need to support everything (or even much) from UML, is doesn't need to have code engineering functions or anything, it just needs to produce visually interesting output. Here is a couple of samples of products that I consider ugly / not good enough: Visio with default UML stencils (didn't find better looking ones), Enterprise Architect, Dia, ArgoUML and many other "professional" UML tools. A couple of visually compelling tools that I considered (but found issues with): Visual Studio class diagrams - just for .NET classes but the output is miles better than what UML tools typically produce NClass - similar to VS's class diagrams but I could not find the "pretty", blue skin anywhere yuml.me - very nice but lacking some advanced layout options. I have to say that I find their style almost ideal for high-level diagrams - they look sketchy which is good. Balsamiq - I think Joel used this for hginit.com and I liked it. However, it's not suited for creating software diagrams so I can imagine it would be quite a lot of work MS Word has actually quite a good graphics engine but I'd rather leave this as a choice of the last resort I'd be grateful for any good tips.

  Thanks in advance for you help Ive been doing this as a lovejob for friends and now im getting quotes of several hundred dollars for minor homepage variation and I'm not sure if its valid. I'm not a programmer myself, just trying hard :) Via the CafePress press75 theme, I'm trying to go from 1 / 2 / 3 column home layout, to 1-2 merged and 3, push the 2nd column data to the right and have the 1st column span as a 16:9 gallery (nextgengallery plugin installed). Is this really a complex thing from a coding perspective? The current guy talking to me is saying its going to cost $700 or 800 AUD to alter, which is rough when the template cost $85.. From this http://shocolate.com.au.previewdns.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/shocolatecurrent.jpg to this 'url+Shocolatelooklikethis.jpg' I was able to get the sidebar removed by taking out ‘‘ near the bottom of home.css.. Just can’t get the middle data to flow over it? This would be ideal as a result, as the system puts the latest selected blog post on the homepage, so if we can get rid of the sidebar div and have the text appear where it was, that would be ideal. Removing the sidebar from the bottom of home.php and setting the thumbnail width to say 450 gives me the result im after EXCEPT the text doesn’t fill where the sidebar is, it wraps underneath. • CSS3PIE issues in IE6 and 8

  I'm using CSS3PIE to apply some rounded corners to elements in Internet Explorer that will get them by stylesheet in other browsers. I've run into some issues with it though. In IE8, I discovered that any element that had the PIE behaviour would behave strangely. The container would jump a few pixels to the right, but the content would stay in its original position, giving the appearance that the content had all shifted left relative to its container. This would be especially problematic on elements with no or small amounts of padding. I was able to hack my way around the problem in IE8 by using X-UA-Compatible, but I'd rather avoid this solution if at all possible. I don't have access to IE9 for testing but my understanding hacks like PIE aren't necessary and it would be wasteful to force a compatibility mode in a browser that doesn't need it. I have worse issues in IE6, with the PIE layout breaking down completely on a list that is set up to use display:inline; zoom:1; list items (to simulate inline-block, which works in IE8 and the other browsers). Here the borders of the list items get rendered in completely the wrong place. So ideally, I'd like to have PIE work properly in IE6, and in IE8 without having to resort to compatibility mode. As far as IE6 goes, a graceful fallback where PIE is just not applied will do. IE7 is the only browser where the page displays as intended. I can't provide an example page just at the moment unfortunately, I can add one later though. Follow up: Here are some screen grabs made with IE Tester. I'm hoping they will make things a little more clear for everybody. As you can see, IE7 is fine. However, in IE8, the containers are offset to the left relative to their content, and in IE6 the list elements (with the rounded 1 pixel border) are a complete mess! • XSLT, worth investing time in, any actual alternatives?

  I realise this has been a few other questions on this topic, and people are saying use your language of choice to manipulate the xml etc etc however, not quite fit my question exactly. Firstly, the scope of the project: We want to develop platform independant e-learning, currently, its a bunch of HTML pages but as they grow and develop they become hard to maintain. The idea: Generate up an XML file + Schema, then produce some XSLT files that process the XML into the eLearning modiles. XML to HTML via XSLT. Why: We would like the flexibily to be able to easy reformat the content (i realise CSS is a viable alternative here) If we decide to alter the pages layout or functionality in anyway, im guessing altering the "shared" XSLT files would be easier than updating the HTML files. So far, we have about 30 modules, with up to 10-30 pages each Depending on some "parameters" we could output drastically different page layouts/structures, above and beyond what CSS can do Now, all this has to be platform independant, and to be able to run "offline" i.e. without a server powering the HTML Negatives ive read so far for XSLT: Overheard? Not exactly sure why...is it the compute power need to convert to HTML? Difficult to learn Better alternatives Now, what I would like to know exactly is: are there actually any viable alternatives for this "offline"? Am I going about it in the correct manner, do you guys have any advice or alternatives. Thanks!

• HTML table with auto-fit for some columns, fixed width for others

  I'm trying to create a table adhering to the following requirements: The table width must be defined as 0 - the browser should calculate the width according to the column widths (this is to accommodate a column-resize plugin). Some columns may receive a fixed width (e.g. 50px); Columns that do not receive a fixed width, must auto-fit to the content. I have created a small example to illustrate the problem - as you can see column 3 stays at width 0 and so is not visible. • Problem with thumbnails after newly added - PHP on-the-fly method

  Hey again... to those that may have read my previous question that got solved a couple minutes ago .< The on-the-fly php script works perfectly, but when I went to upload new images into a gallery which I made myself, the images are resized to 150 x 150 for what I wanted... however, when it comes to new images being added it is all black... As you can see the three black images that were uploaded to the folder and the directory added to the database. What is causing this? • Should developers *really* have private offices?

  We will probably be moving within a year, so we have to make some decisions regarding office layout. At the moment, our company is basically one big office. When our developers can't bother to be disturbed at all, we all have our own headphones to mute the outside world. Still, it seems a lot of people feel that private offices are no doubt the way to go. From Joel's article Private Offices Redux: Not every programmer in the world wants to work in a private office. In fact quite a few would tell you unequivocally that they prefer the camaradarie and easy information sharing of an open space. Don't fall for it. They also want M&Ms for breakfast and a pony. Open space is fun but not productive. Even though I can understand the benefit on productivity, does having a private office really result in more net productivity? There seem to be plenty of companies that create wide open spaces and still maintain good productivity. Or so it seems. (I should mention many of them use cubicles, though) What is your opinion on this? What does your company do? Is there some middle ground in this? • How do I add an extra separator to the top of a UITableView?

  Hi, I have a view for the iPhone that is basically split in two, with an informational display in the top half, and a UITableView for selecting actions in the bottom half. The problem is that there is no border or separator above the first cell in the UITableView, so the first item in the list looks funny. How can I add an extra separator at the top of the table, to separate it from the display area above it? Here's the code to build the cells - it's pretty straightforward. • Getting an updated location in Android

  Hi, I'm using the code shown below to get an updated value for location every time a button is clicked. When my activity is resumed I get an update every second, so that when I call getLastKnownLocation I expect to have a location that have been updated in the last second. Is that the correct way to do that? I would expect the onLocationChanged event to be triggered every time I execute a 'geo fix' command (or max after 1s since I request update every 1s), but it's only triggered the first time. Why? Any help/suggestion welcome! In portrait-mode the cell is 300px long, in landscape-mode 420px. • Aligning messageformat on printing a JTable.

  I'm using this for the moment to print out my table, and it works. But I'm not really happy with the layout of the messageformatting, I would like to have both pagenumber and date in the footer, and date format aligned to the left side of the table, and page to the right. How can I do that? Been reading some stuff about overriding the PrintTable method, but seems to get pretty complex from what I've read. • Magento - use an alternate "price.phtml" (in addition to the existing one)

  I am looking for a way to have an alternate template/catalog/product/price.phml used in one specific location, and to continue using the existing price.phtml file in all other locations. To explain further, I need to display the regular price, and then another special price right below it - but only on the product page (for the main product being displayed). This special price is not a price that can be calculated by the catalog price rules, so I wrote my own module to do the calculation. So, everywhere that I am displaying prices I want to display with the regular ol' template/catalog/product/price.phtml file... but for the product page (the main product - not the related, upsells, etc) I want to use my own custom template/catalog/product/price-custom.phtml template file. Can anybody help? Normally I just look in the layout xml files (for example catalog.xml) to find these types of things, but price.phtml is kinda special - it isn't that simple. And for the life of me I can't figure out if there is an easy way to swap it out conditionally on the page being viewed. I am aware that I can just update price.phtml to always print out this extra price, and then use css to hide the price everywhere, but I would rather not do that if possible. (Also you may want to know that I only have simple products.)

• ListView causing OutOfMemory Error

  So I am not really given a reason to the right of this error message. I am not exactly sure why this is happening but my guess though is that it has to do with the fact that there are around ~50 good quality drawables. Upon scrolling really fast, the app crashes. I feel as if I am mitigating most common issues with ListView and crashing such as using View Holders as well as only initiating the inflater once. In tradional aspect of GUI Designing , either we tend to create a static gui page and code the elements on it along with other properties of the elements such as (disabled/enabled,image source,name ,id ,which function to be called under onclick event.) or we tend to drag and drop the elements from the control pallete provided by variety of gui frameworks. Certain things i need to design a POC so that we can develop this concept. 1) There must a utility ,such that during creation of screen layout , that screen should be saved in the database(RDBMS) with a screen number. 2) All the Events related to that control should be saved in some other table which will be dynamically mapped during the calling of screen number by the user. 3) When the user call that screen ,a generic function should be invoked which'll call the screen file from the database and apply all the properties ,events,etc at runtime and the final output will be displayed to the user. • Logging in "Java Library Code" libs for Android applications

  I follow the advice to implement Android device (not application!) independent library code for my Android Apps in a seperate "Java Library Code" project. This makes testing easier for me as I can use the standard maven project layout, Spring test support and Continuous Build systems the way I am used to. I do not want to mix this inside my Android App project although this might be possible. I now wonder how to implement logging in this library. As this library will be used on the Android device I would like to go with android.util.Log. I added the followind dependency to my project to get the missing Android packages/classes and dependencies: <dependency> <groupId>com.google.android</groupId> <artifactId>android</artifactId> <version>2.2.1</version> <scope>provided</scope> </dependency> But this library just contains stub method (similar to the android.jar inside the android-sdk), thus using android.util.Log results in java.lang.RuntimeException: Stub! when running my unit tests. How do I implement logging which works on the Android device but does not fail outside (I do not expect it to work, but it must not fail)? • FragmentActivity doesn't see activity in onActivityCreate(), after screen orientation changed

  I'm using Android support library v13. There is a strange thing I couldn't understand. When creating new activity, I load fragment as: Main activity layout: ... <FrameLayout android:id="@+id/fragment_1" ... /> In onCreate() of main activity: mFragment = (FragmentActivity) getSupportFragmentManager().findFragmentById(R.id.fragment_1); // if screen orientation changed, no need to create new instance of fragment if (mFragment == null) { mFragment = ...; // create new instance of fragment FragmentTransaction ft = getSupportFragmentManager().beginTransaction(); ft.replace(R.id.fragment_1, mFragment); // because this is called ONCE, we can use this method ft.commitAllowingStateLoss(); } Now, everything works perfectly in emulators 1.5, 1.6 and 2.2. I have a phone 2.2.2. But there is an exception: if the app is running, and screen orientation changed. Inside onActivityCreated(), getActivity() sometimes returns null. This only happens in emulators 1.5/ 1.6/ 2.2. My phone 2.2.2 works very well, I test hundreds of times but never catch that bug. Even other emulators 3.x, 4.x work well too. Unfortunately I don't have phone 1.5/ 1.6/ 2.2. So did you have experience with this? Is that a bug of the support library, or emulators? Could you please help me? Thank you in advance.

  I have an application which uses a custom title bar. However, when my application launches, I noticed that the default title bar is shown for a brief period of time. My problem is I don't want to show the default title bar while my application is loading. How do I hide the title bar while my application is loading so that there will be no hint of it and then show it afterwards? So far, I tried the following solutions but none have worked: Hide the title bar in XML and then set the custom title bar in code. (Problem encountered: I received an error message saying: "You cannot combine custom titles with other title features".) In XML: <item name="android:windowNoTitle">true</item> In onCreate method: requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_CUSTOM_TITLE); //... some code goes here getWindow().setFeatureInt(Window.FEATURE_CUSTOM_TITLE, R.layout.title_header); Set the size of the title bar in XML to 0. Then change it's size via code later. (Problem encountered: I don't know how to set the size of title bar in code. Is it possible? I tried getWindow().setAttributes() and getWindow().setLayout() but both of them didn't worked.)" • Multiple webroot folders with Jetty

  I'm using Jetty (version 6.1.22) to service a Java web application. I would like to make Jetty look in two different folders for web resources. Take this layout: +- project1 | +- src | +- main | +- webapp | +- first.jsp | +- project2 +- src +- main +- webapp +- second.jsp I would like to make Jetty serve both URLs: http://localhost/web/first.jsp http://localhost/web/second.jsp I tried starting Jetty like this: Server server = new Server(); SocketConnector connector = new SocketConnector(); connector.setPort(80); server.setConnectors(new Connector[] { connector }); WebAppContext contextWeb1 = new WebAppContext(); contextWeb1.setContextPath("/web"); contextWeb1.setWar("project1/src/main/webapp"); server.addHandler(contextWeb1); WebAppContext contextWeb2 = new WebAppContext(); contextWeb2.setContextPath("/web"); contextWeb2.setWar("project2/src/main/webapp"); server.addHandler(contextWeb2); server.start(); But it only serves first.jsp, and it returns 404 for second.jsp. • Flexible forms and supporting database structure

  I have been tasked with creating an application that allows administrators to alter the content of the user input form (i.e. add arbitrary fields) - the contents of which get stored in a database. Think Modx/Wordpress/Expression Engine template variables. The approach I've been looking at is implementing concrete tables where the specification is consistent (i.e. user profiles, user content etc) and some generic field data tables (i.e. text, boolean) to store non-specific values. Forms (and model fields) would be generated by first querying the tables and retrieving the relevant columns - although I've yet to think about how I would setup validation. I've taken a look at this problem, and it seems to be indicating an EAV type approach - which, from my brief research - looks like it could be a greater burden than the blessings it's flexibility would bring. I've read a couple of posts here, however, which suggest this is a dangerous route: How to design a generic database whose layout may change over time? Dynamic Database Schema I'd appreciate some advice on this matter if anyone has some to give regards SWK

• Is it possible to pull a webpage or content from the web into a widget on the android home screen

  Hi there. I have a php web page that will randomize an image that is 158x154. I was able to get the android application to work, but would also like to get it to work as a widget. How the heck can I get a widget to pull information from the net? I got the widget to work and layout correctly with a black sample image. I have tried to look at the wiki sample, but it is a bit too complicated for my little brain to grasp. The data that gets pulled looks something like: <html><body bgcolor="#000000">center> <a href="http://www.website.com" target="_blank"> <img border="0" src="http://www.webiste.com//0.gif"></a> <img src="http://www.webiste.com" style="border:none;" /> </center></body></html> Help please. • Issue with Running Android Program on Eclipse

  I downloaded complete Android Environment Development Environment Snapshots from marakana.com. I start eclipse and create new Android project. On the Run Configurations, i created New Configuration to run the application, and set the Target to Automatic and select the AVD that appropriate to run the application. But, when i click on the run icon, it starts the new emulator, and after some minutes, just android emulator be ran and my application doesn't run on it. What do i do to solve the running problem and run my project on emulator ?
