• Does any one know of a packet generator?

  We have a networked device, and we would like to perform some tests on how it handles malformed packets. Is there a product out there that can generate arbitrary packets and packet sequences? I would like to be able to specify a set of TCP/IP payloads and it would open a connection and send the data. Obviouly, the TCP/IP checksum should be calculated correctly, etc... Kind of like a wireshark in reverse. Note that I am not interested in network loading and blasting millions of packet.

• Testing complex entities

  I've got a C# form, with various controls on it. The form controls an ongoing process, and there are many, many aspects that need to be right for the program to run correctly. Each part can be unit tested (for instance, loading some coefficients, drawing some diagnostics) but I often run into problems that are best described with an example: "If I click here, then here, then change this, then re-open the form, then click here, it crashes or produces an error" I've tried my best to use common code organisational ideas (inheritance, DRY, separation of concerns) but there never seems to be a way to test every single path, and inevitably, a form with several controls will have a huge number of ways to execute. What can I read (preferably online) that addresses this kind of issue, and is there a (non-generic) term for it. This isn't a specific problem I'm having, but one that creeps up on me, especially with WinForms.

• Multiple NSURLDownloads with Progress

  Hello, I'm trying to build a small app which allows downloading of multiple files at the same time while displaying them in a custom NSTableView. This works, i've done this by using an NSEnumerator, but I struggle at getting the progress right. It's calculated correctly, but it's not done individually for every download, instead they're added up. The way I've tried to set the subtitles containing the progress is by loading them into a separate array and then inserting/replacing objects containing the progress, but here I run into another problem - I don't know how to get the index of the object that's being downloaded, so I can't differentiate between the progresses. • Converting excel files to python to frequency

  Essentially I've got an excel files with voltage in the first column, and time in the second. I want to find the period of the voltages, as it returns a graph of voltage in y axis and time in x axis with a periodicity, looking similar to a sine function. To find the frequency I have uploaded my excel file to python as I think this will make it easier- there may be something I've missed that will simplify this.   Does anyone know if there is a way I can dynamically load and unload a TinyMCE plugin after TinyMCE has already been loaded? Specifically, I'm thinking about asking the user whether or not they wish to load the fullpage plugin using perhaps a radio button or something above TinyMCE: <input type="radio" name="fullpage" value="enabled" /> Enable Fullpage Plugin<br /> <input type="radio" name="fullpage" value="disabled" /> Disable Fullpage Plugin<br /> <textarea name="tinymce" id="tinymce">...</textarea> I suppose I could destroy the original instance and load a new config (one for enabled / one for disabled), but it seems as though there should be a more elegant way of loading and unloading plugins.

• Program skips code after trying to parse XML in VB.NET

  I'm trying to parse some XML (html) I downloaded using WebRequest.Create() and then read it. However after loading the XML file using LoadXml(string), anything else I execute doesn't work. Setting a breakpoint on anything afterwards doesn't work and it doesn't break. I tried catching exception but none are occurring, so I'm not sure what the problem is. • How can I create a button with a UIActivityIndicator in my navigation bar with the same style as nor

  All of the examples I've seen on here and other sites involved creating a UIActivityIndicatorView and loading it with something like: self.navigationItem.rightBarButtonItem = [[[UIBarButtonItem alloc] initWithCustomView:myActivityIndicatorView target:nil action:nil] autorelease]; However, that just creates a plain activity indicator in the navigation bar. What I want to do is have a button that looks just like the normal UIBarButtonSystemItem buttons but with an activity indicator instead of one of the default images. I've tried doing initWithImage and initWithTitle with nil images or titles and then adding the activity indicator as a subview, but that doesn't work. Any ideas?

• Browser caching issue on a https site pressing f5

  i am working on a website where i have content entry form. This form contains a tiny mce control. The control is composed of some 40-50 files. The testing reported that the entry form loads slow and evertime shows up 50 files loading to completely load the page. Is there a way i can decrease this time. I have taken help of browser caching by setting the expires header of static content to very far date. When i access the form through its link second or later times it loads fast without saying 40 files remaining. but when i do f5 it reloads the entire page. I m confused as to how is f5 different from clicking on the link. Just to add my url is https.Any suggestion to increase the performance of this form will be great.

• Running Script before/after Variables declared?

  Hi folks. As i understand javascript .js files are best to put all the way at the bottom of html pages, to speed up loading of rest of page. Advised by Yslow(Yahoo) and Page Speed(google). Now, when in the middle of page some thing RUNS a javascript script, in Internet Explorer, i see a small warning message saying that the element is: Uncaught ReferenceError: SWFObject is not defined When i put my all.js file in the had, the error goes away but page load slows doen. What to do? Actually, i remember it was the same with php variables. If i RUN php but the variable comes later, then it just doesnt work. must define the variable first, for it to run. How to make this workflow better, in case of php scripts? and in case of javsscripts? Thanks!

• iPhone TabBar selection cancelling

  I am developing an iPhone app that displays several views, all acessed via Tab Bar items. However I need to add an additional item to the Tab Bar that simply launches a URL in Safari. I've accomplished this by adding an empty placeholder view to the TabBar and returning FALSE from shouldSelectViewController when the this view's tabBarItem is clicked on, and launching Safari at the same time. That code is: - (BOOL)tabBarController:(UITabBarController *)tabBarController shouldSelectViewController:(UIViewController *)viewController { if([[viewController tabBarItem] title] == "Website"){ //... launch Safari return FALSE; } else { return TRUE; } } PROBLEM: If the TabBar has too many items, and this "Safari Launch" tab is pushed off to the "More" navigation controller, I lose the capability to intercept the event and prevent the view from loading when clicked. Any suggested tips?

• ConcurrentLinkedQueue$Node remains in heap after remove()

  I have a multithreaded app writing and reading a ConcurrentLinkedQueue, which is conceptually used to back entries in a list/table. I originally used a ConcurrentHashMap for this, which worked well. A new requirement required tracking the order entries came in, so they could be removed in oldest first order, depending on some conditions. ConcurrentLinkedQueue appeared to be a good choice, and functionally it works well. A configurable amount of entries are held in memory, and when a new entry is offered when the limit is reached, the queue is searched in oldest-first order for one that can be removed. Certain entries are not to be removed by the system and wait for client interaction. What appears to be happening is I have an entry at the front of the queue that occurred, say 100K entries ago. The queue appears to have the limited number of configured entries (size() == 100), but when profiling, I found that there were ~100K ConcurrentLinkedQueue$Node objects in memory. This appears to be by design, just glancing at the source for ConcurrentLinkedQueue, a remove merely removes the reference to the object being stored but leaves the linked list in place for iteration. Finally my question: Is there a "better" lazy way to handle a collection of this nature? I love the speed of the ConcurrentLinkedQueue, I just cant afford the unbounded leak that appears to be possible in this case. If not, it seems like I'd have to create a second structure to track order and may have the same issues, plus a synchronization concern.

Finally, I have a website utilizing ASP to display the blog entries. The website connects directly to the backend database using an OLEDB connection object. Whenever I open the form for creating a new post in MS Access, loading the blog post page on the website displays the error: Could not use "; file already in use. I would like to be able to display the older blog posts even though the newest one is in the process of being added.

  Hi, I've been working with subsonic for a few weeks now, and it is working really well. However, I've just run into an issue with child objects with additional partial properties. Some of it is probably me just not understanding the .Net object lifecycle. I have an object - search. This has a few properties like permissions and stuff, and it links to a child table called search_options. In my Asp.Net app, it loops through these search options and creates controls. Then on postback, it grabs the values and assigns it back to a "value" property on the search_option. This value property is a simple string that's defined in a partial class. I then want to create a method on the search object, called PerformSearch. This then loops through the child search_options, and performs a custom query based on the "value" property. However, even though I assign the "value" property to the child search_option, when I access it later via the search.search_options collection, it is null. I'm guessing that maybe because it's accessing it in two different places, it performs another lazy load from the DB and the value is lost? Is there a way to tell the class that it's already loaded or something? or a way to access it so it's not reloaded from the DB? • I don't understand Application Domains

  .NET has this concept of Application Domains which from what I understand can be used to load an assembly into memory. I've done some research on Application Domains as well as go to my local book store for some additional knowledge on this subject matter but it seems very scarce. All I know that I can do with Application Domains is to load assemblies in memory and I can unload them when I want. What are the capabilities other that I have mentioned of Application Domains? Do Threads respect Application Domains boundaries? Are there any drawbacks from loading Assemblies in different Application Domains other than the main Application Domains beyond performance of communication? Links to resources that discuss Application Domains would be nice as well. I've already checked out MSDN which doesn't have that much information about them.

• Replay attacks for HTTPS requests

  Let's say a security tester uses a proxy, say Fiddler, and records an HTTPS request using the administrator's credentials-- on replay of the entire request (including session and auth cookies) the security tester is able to succesfully (re)record transactions. The claim is that this is a sign of a CSRF vulnerability. What would a malicious user have to do to intercept the HTTPS request and replay it? It this a task for script kiddies, well funded military hacking teams or time-traveling-alien technology? Is it really so easy to record the SSL sessions of users and replay them before the tickets expire? No code in the application currently does anything interesting on HTTP GET, so AFAIK, tricking the admin into clicking a link or loading a image with a malicious URL isn't an issue.

And by the way, this works fine as well: script/console Loading development environment (Rails 2.3.8) require 'factory_girl' = [] so requiring the gems seems to be working

• What is a good Javascript RDFa parser implementation?

  I am looking to implement a client side RDFa based formatting for a web application. This would be similar to Mark Birbeck's ubiquity-rdfa project. Mark's project looks fantastic but it has at least two drawbacks: It is slow. Adding RDFa formatting to a simple page causes a noticeable delay in page loading. It is complex. The ubiquity-rdfa project makes use of the w3c fresnel specification which is complex way to add simple annotations to client markup. I am looking for a lighter weight way of adding annotations through client code and I don't mind doing some work to get it. What I would like is a fast and reliable Javascript RDFa parser. Some implementations that I have found include: W3C RDFa bookmarklet parser Elias Torres RDFa extractor I am interested to know if you would recommend one of these, or another, RDFa Javascript implementation. • Importing large datasets on iPhone using CoreData

  Hi there, I'm facing very annoying problem. My iPhone app is loading it's data from a network server. Data are sent as plist and when parsed, it neeeds to be stored to SQLite db using CoreData. Issue is that in some cases those datasets are too big (5000+ records) and import takes way too long. More on that, when iPhone tries to suspend the screen, Watchdog kills the app because it's still processing the import and does not respond up to 5 seconds, so import is never finished. I used all recommended techniques according to article "Efficiently Importing Data" http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/DOCUMENTATION/Cocoa/Conceptual/CoreData/Articles/cdImporting.html and other docs concerning this, but it's still awfully slow. Solution I'm looking for is to let app suspend, but let import run in behind (better one) or to prevent attempts to suspend the app at all. Or any better idea is welcomed too. Any tips on how to overcome these issues are highly appreciated! Thanks

• Installing Ruby On Rails - Issues with gem (and no RVM)

  I'm having this issue whenever i run "gem install rails": usr/local/lib/ruby/1.9.1/yaml.rb:56:in `<top (required)>': It seems your ruby installation is missing psych (for YAML output). To eliminate this warning, please install libyaml and reinstall your ruby. ERROR: Loading command: install (LoadError) cannot load such file -- zlib ERROR: While executing gem ... (NameError) uninitialized constant Gem::Commands::InstallCommand Ruby and Rubygems were both installed from source. I've installed libyaml from source and from apt-get. I'm running ubuntu 12.04. I am NOT running RVM as far as I know (trying "rvm" returns "bla bla bla not installed apt-get". I'm pretty sure this speaks of 2 separate issues but I need solutions to both. Thanks.
