  at the moment i'm running ubuntu server 12.04 on top of a virtual box running as service in M$ w7x64, I've configured the shares on fstab with E /media/E vboxsf auto,rw,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 the mount is ok drwxrwxrwx 1 knoker knoker 16384 Sep 1 20:02 E but i cant change the permissions inside of /media/E ,chmod runs but doesn't do nothing. on a specific case /media/E/Docs/Downloads i have dr-xr-xr-x 1 knoker knoker 163840 Sep 1 19:30 Downloads and since i cant seem to be able to change from linux i tried it on the windows, and all users listed have full control... • error with slap.d while installing any new software

  I am trying to install wireshark (this issue is not specific to wireshark) on my ubuntu box and I keep getting the following error for slap.d: Setting up slapd (2.4.23-6ubuntu6.1) ... Creating initial configuration... mkdir: cannot create directory `/etc/ldap/slapd.d': File exists dpkg: error processing slapd (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: slapd Besides uninstalling or trying to update open LDAP or slap.d, is there any other action that can be taken to resolve this issue? I am trying the install as root user & I have tried moving the slap.d conf file so far but without any luck. Any thoughts on troubleshooting/resolving this issue will be quite welcome. thank in advance

• Is LightDM is broken? Autologin works

  I recently upgraded my Mythbuntu box to 11.10. LightDM worked for a while and then I configured autologin on my user account. After some time, I've removed some packages to lean down the system. Now when I log out (from either Unity or Gnome Shell) I lose the X session, LightDM doesn't start back up. If I disable autologin through /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf I get no login screen & no X. As I said, autologin works and gives me a Ubuntu Classic desktop. This is the only reference in dmesg to lightdm; [ 17.351023] type=1400 audit(1329530135.420:19): apparmor="STATUS" operation="profile_load" name="/usr/lib/lightdm/lightdm-guest-session-wrapper" pid=1097 comm="apparmor_parser" Can anyone help?

• List of bounding boxes?

  When I create a bounding box for each object in my chunk, would it be better to store them in a list? List<BoundingBox> cubeBoundingBox Or can I just use a single variable? BoundingBox cubeBoundingBox The bounding boxes will be used for all types of things so they will be moving around. In any case, I'd be adding it to a method that gets called 2500+ times for each chunk, so either I have a giant list of them or 2500+ individual boxes. Is there any advantage to using one or the other?

• 12.04 boots into terminal after first install. How to boot into GUI permanently?

  As a person with a quite limited CLI experience I congratulate myself on installing Ubuntu on an ancient non-pae Fujitsu Amilo M1425 thru the network with mini.iso. However upon reboot I'm met w/ the following: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS ubuntu-fujitsu tty1 ubuntu-fujitsu login: for which my specified login during setup is not accepted. (I'm quite sure its correct) Let's assume this screen is passed, how to start the GUI and make it the permanent option during boot? This box will return to a mostly comp-illiterate person, for which the existence of ubuntu will be an enough shock already. Wouldn't wanna leave him w/o the GUI. Other posts here mention the command startx but I probably need a login in the first place.. So "why won't it accept my login & how can I make the GUI-boot permanent?" is my question. Thanks in advance.

I can not do directory posting, link exchange, paid linking, web 2.0 and blog commenting as they are spam now. I do not see what other choice i have except forum posting and article posting.   I have the following configuration, A host running Windows 7; A guest running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (VirtualBox); I am connecting a Cisco router directly to my PC running Windows 7 and testing the router for netflow packets in the virtualBox I am having a difficulty capturing the traffic of the netflow from the Cisco device in my virtualBox using port 2222. I tried to use the many different networking modes provided by virutalBox (i.e. NAT, Bridged Adapter, Host only adapter) but I am not successful in capturing the netflow traffic. Could you please advise me on the configuration setup that need to be done on the virtual box to allow capturing the traffic coming from the router. I successfully capture the netflow traffic on my PC (windows 7). Thank you

• Grub boot problems with older ubuntu

  This is my 1st post here and there are 2 problems that are inter-related. I'm not much of a Linux system person... the computer is a dedicated linux box without any windoze. 1) running 9.10 and had a boot failure last week. looks like a file was deleted or corrupted. i was unable to get it to work. realizing it was a boot issue, i took the CD and installed 9.04 to co-exist with 9.10 on the disc. 9.04 was put into a 2.5 gb ext3 partition. i was able to boot into 9.10 from grub menu selection. 9.04 was now the default in grub menu. 2) i want to remove/delete/purge 9.04 completely from my system and "clean up" the stuff so that the machine boots straight to 9.10 (no grub menu). how are these accomplished in a "safe" manner? thank you. -denk

• Numpad doesn't work after booting up - forced to reconnect USB keyboard after startup

  I've tried this on two different USB keyboards - both of which work fine on a different computer running Windows XP. For some reason, the numerical keypad doesn't work probably immediately after booting up - neither the numbers work, nor the 'home' commands and so on that you can use with the numlock off. It doesn't make a difference whether I press numlock on or off - the keypad doesn't work correctly no matter what state this is in. However, once I've booted the machine I can disconnect/reconnect the USB connector for the keyboard, and it will work exactly as expected. I'm running Gnome on Ubuntu 10.04. The only other USB devices connected is a mouse - and I've experienced no problems with that. This is a direct connection to the box (not via an external USB hub)

• How important is my job title?

  Hi all, I work on two internal, mission critical applications. Let's keep it simple and call them "Foo" and "Bar". Nobody outside of the company has ever heard of them - like I said, they're internal apps. Until now my jobtitle has just been "Software Developer". I've recently discovered that my jobtitle is being changed to "Foo and Bar Developer". I'm a little worried that, should I leave the company, I'll have trouble finding a new job because of my weird job title. My question is this: How important is my job title compared to everything else on my CV (or resume, if you're American)? Am I likely to be rejected by box-ticking HR people who don't realise that "Foo and Bar Developer" is the same as "Software Developer"? Thanks in advance.

  Hi I want to add some options to my magento, lets say i print on clothing, a customer buys some t-shirts, shirts and jackets from me, it totals to £60+ VAT on the checkout area where i signup and not before I need to add an option where I can add a text box and upload option, can i do this? I ideally then want to add some pricing options if the user has chosen to add some branding to a product or multiple products e.g. if the branding was on the top right of the shirt it will cost £5.00, if on the back it costs £7.00 etc all if possible to be done via the admincp. I also want an option so when they upload their logo for the first time they are charged a one off charge, like a setup fee but If the customer has allready sent in there logo then no charge applies. thanks Graham

• SDL Fullscreen and Gnome-panel

  On Ubuntu 10.10, the following SDL code cause Gnome-panel to cease updating its drawing, however it does still function (ie windows on the panel open where they should be, but you just have to know where they 'would be' on instinct/memory). • Upgrading Agent Controllers in Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 12c

  Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center 12c recently released an upgrade for Solaris Agent Controllers. In this week's blog post, we'll show you how to upgrade agent controllers. Detailed instructions about upgrading Agent Controllers are available in the product documentation here. This blog post uses an Enterprise Controller which is configured for connected mode operation. If you'd like to apply the agent update in a disconnected installation, additional instructions are available here. Step 1: Download Agent Controller Updates With a connected mode Ops Center installation, you can check for product updates at any time by selecting the Enterprise Controller from the left-hand Administration navigation tab. Select the right-hand Action link “Ops Center Downloads” to open a pop-up dialog displaying any new product updates. In this example, the Enterprise Controller has already been upgraded to the latest version (Update 1, also shown as build version 2076) so only the Agent Controller updates will appear. There are three updates available: one for Solaris 10 X86, one for Solaris 8-10 SPARC, and one for all versions of Solaris 11. Note that the last update in the screen shot is the Solaris 11 update; for details on any of the downloads, place your mouse over the information icon under the details column for a pop-up text region. Select the software to download and click the Next button to display the Ops Center license agreement. Review and click the check box to accept the license agreement, then click the Next button to begin downloading the software. The status screen shows the current download status. If desired, you can perform the downloads as a background job. Simply click the check box, then click the next button to proceed to the summary screen. The summary screen shows the updates to be downloaded as well as the current status. Clicking the Finish button will close the dialog and return to the Browser UI. The download job will continue to run in Ops Center and progress can still be viewed from the jobs menu at the bottom of the browser window. Step 2: Check the Version of Existing Agent Controllers After the download job completes, you can check the availability of agent updates as well as the current versions of your Agent Controllers from the left-hand Assets navigation tab. Select “Operating Systems” from the pull-down tab lets to display only OS assets. Next, select “Solaris” in the left-hand tab to display the Solaris assets. Finally, select the Summary tab in the center display panel to show which versions of agent controllers are installed in your data center. Notice that a few of the OS assets are not displayed in the Agent Controllers tab. Ops Center will not display OS instances which do not have an Agent Controller installation. This includes Enterprise Controllers and Proxy Controllers (unless the agent has been activated on the OS instance) and and OS instances using agentless management. For Agent Controllers which support an update, the version of agent software (in this example, 2083) appears to the right of the currently installed version. Step 3: Upgrade Your Agent Controllers If desired, you can upgrade agent controllers from the previous screen by selecting the desired systems and clicking the upgrade button. Alternatively, you can click the link “Upgrade All Agent Controllers” in the right-hand Actions menu: In either case, a pop-up dialog lets you start the upgrade process. The first screen in the dialog lets you choose the upgrade method: Ops Center provides three ways to upgrade agent controllers: Automatic Upgrade: If Agent Controllers are running on all assets, Ops Center can automatically upgrade the software to the latest version without requiring any login credentials to the system SSH using a single set of credentials: If all assets use the same login credentials, you can apply a single set to all assets for the upgrade process. The log-in credentials are the same ones used for asset discovery and management, which are stored in the Plan Management navigation tab under Credentials. SSH using individual credentials: If assets use different login credentials, you can select a different set for each asset. After selecting the upgrade method, click the Next button to proceed to the summary screen. Click the Finish button to close the pop-up dialog and start the upgrade job for the agent controllers. The upgrade job runs a series of tasks in parallel, and will upgrade all agents which have been selected. Once the job completes, the OS instances in your data center will be upgraded and running the latest version of Agent Controller software.

• How to remove all LVs VGs and Partitions On All Drives Before Installing 12.04

  I have 2 hard drives that had been used for Ubuntu Server 11.10. Now I would like to start from scratch with 12.04 but I'm having some trouble with the existing logical volumes and volume groups. Erasing data during install looks like it's going to take days. Is there a quick and simple way to wipe out all volumes/groups/partitions so I can start with 2 empty drives? When I set this up on 11.04 it took me a while to learn how to do it and I've since forgotten most of what I learned. For what it's worth, I'm only using this box to try and learn about Linux. • Game-a-Week One Completed

  Last night I finished my Game-a-Week One and felt and extreme sense of accomplishment with what I finished in a single week. I removed all traces of the JigLibX code since it wasn't working properly due to my implementation and got my collision working thanks to some BoundingSpheres and Riemer's tutorials.  However, since the characters are Corndogs a rectangle bounding box would have made more sense although the bullets are only able to move forward currently. While developing it in a week was a challenge, developing it in a week while maintaining proper coding standards and clean, reusable code was damn near impossible.  It's possible my next step will be to either refactor it or move onto Game-a-Week Two. I will post a link to the game ZIP in the future.

• How do I turn on wireless adapter on HP Envy dv6 7200 under Ubuntu (any version)?

  I have a new HP Envy dv6 7200 with dual boot Windows 8 / Ubuntu 12.04. In windows, the F12 key in Windows activates the "airplane mode" switch which enables/disables both on-board (mini PCIe) and USB wireless adapters. In Ubuntu, however, the wireless adapter is turned off by default and cannot be turned back on via the F12 key (or any other combination of F12 and Ctrl, Fn, Shift, etc.). Let me explain the "fixes" I've seen in various forums and explain what did or did not happen. These are listed in no particular order. (Spoiler alert: wireless is still broke). Solution 1? Use HP's "Wireless Assistant" utility to permanently activate the wireless card in Windows, then boot into Ubuntu to happily find it working. Unfortunately, this utility works in Windows 7 but not Windows 8. On the other hand, hardware drivers from HP are only available for Windows 8 for this model. Catch 22 (I could not find a comparable utility for Windows 8). Solution 2? Use a USB wireless adapter to sidestep the on-board device. I purchased such a device from thinkpenguin.com to be sure that it would be Linux-friendly. However, the wireless switch enables / disables all wireless devices including USB. So, there's my $50 donation to the nice folks at thinkpenguin.com, but still no solution. Solution 3? Following the Think Penguin folk's suggestion, modify the mini PCI express adapter following instructions here: http://www.notebookforums.com/t/225429/broken-wireless-hardware-switch-fix Tempting, but I then violate the terms of my warranty mere days after opening the box. This might be a good solution for an older machine that you want to get your geek on with, but not for a new box. Solution 4? rfkill unblock all No effect whatsoever. ubuntu@ubuntu-hp-evny:~$ rfkill unblock all ubuntu@ubuntu-hp-evny:~$ rfkill list all 0: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes Solution 5? Re-install drivers. Done and done. Ubuntu recognizes the device - perhaps even without re-installing the drivers? - but cannot turn it on. How do I know this? In the Network Manager drop-down menu, the wireless option is blacked out and a message reads something like: "wireless network is disabled by a hardware switch". Solution 6? Identify a physical switch on the laptop and flip it. There is no such switch on this machine. In fact, walking through Best Buy yesterday, I checked and not a single new laptop PC had a physical switch on it. All of the wireless switches are either the F2 or F12 key ... I wonder if askubuntu will not be plagued by this exact issue in the near future? • Incremental file system backups

  I use Virtual Box a lot for distro / applications testing purposes. One of the features I simply love about it is virtual machines snapshots, its saves a state of a virtual machine and is able to restore it to its former glory if something you did went wrong without any problems and without consuming your all hard disk space. On my live systems I know how to create a 1:1 image of the file system but all the solutions I'v known will create a new image of the complete file system. Are there any programs / file systems that are capable of taking a snapshot of a current file system, save it on another location but instead of making a complete new image it creates incremental backups? To easy describe what I want, it should be as dd images of a file system, but instead of only a full backup it would also create incremental. I am not looking for clonezilla, etc. It should run within the system itself with no (or almost none) intervention from the user, but contain all the data of the file systems.
