  • Are certain open-source licenses more suitable than others for career growth?

    As a software engineer/programmer myself, I love the possibility to download the code and learn from it. However building software is what brings food to my table. I have doubts regarding the type of license I should use for my own personal projects or when picking up one project to learn from. There are already many questions about licenses on Stackoverflow, but I would like to make this one much more specific. If your main profession and way of living is building software: which type of license do you find more useful for you? And I mean, the license that can benefit you most as a professional because it gives you more freedom to reuse the experience you gain. GPL is a great license to build communities because it forces you to give back your work. However I like BSD licenses because of their extra freedom. I know that if the code I am exploring is BSD licensed, I might be able to expand not only my skills, but also my programmer toolbox. Whenever I am working for a company, I might recall that something similar was done in another project and I will be able to copy or imitate certain part of the code. I know that there are religious wars regarding GPL vs BSD and it is not my intention to start one. Probably many companies already take snipsets from GPL projects anyway. I just want to insist in the factor of professional enrichment. I do not intend to discriminate any license. I said I prefer BSD licenses but I also use Linux because the user base is bigger and also the market demand.

  • Why the parent page get refreshed when I click the link to open thickbox-styled form?

    Hi, all: I'm using Thickbox 3.1 to show signup form. The form content comes from jquery ajax post. The jquery lib is of version 1.4.2. I placed a "signup" link into a div area, which is a part of my other large pages, and the whole content of that div area is ajax+posted from my server. To make thickbox can work in my above arangement, I have modified the thickbox code a little like that: //add thickbox to href & area elements that have a class of .thickbox function tb_init(domChunk){ $(domChunk).live('click', function(){ var t = this.title || this.name || null; var a = this.href || this.alt; var g = this.rel || false; tb_show(t,a,g); this.blur(); return false; });} This modification is the only change against the original version. Beacause the "signup" link is placed in ajaxed content, so I Use live instead of binding the click event directly. When I tested on my pc, the thickbox works well. I can see the signup form quickly, without feeling the content of the parent page(here, is the other large pages) get refreshed. But after transmiting my site files into VHost, when I click the "signup" link, the signup form get presented very slowly. The large pages get refreshed evidently, because the borwser(ie6) are reloading images from server incessantly. These images are set as background images in CSS files. I think that's because the slow connection of network. But why the parent pages get refreshed? and why the browser reloads those images one more time? Havn't those images been placed in local computer's disk? Is there one way to stop that reloadding? Because the signup form can't get displayed sometimes due to slow connection of network.   • How to integrate an open source C program instead of calling its executable through a system call?

    I have an executable (fossil scm) that is being invoked by my program externally through ::CreateProcess windows call. The stdout and stderr are then captured. Since the source code for fossil is available, I would prefer to create a static library out of it and issue calls directly. Currently, communication to fossil is done through the command line parameters, and the communication back is through the process return code, stdout and stderr. Fossil writes to stdout/err through printf and fprintf calls. What is the best way to solve this with minimum alteration of fossil source? Is there a reliable and cross-platform way to intercept stdout/err and send it into a memory buffer?

  • Perl, deleting an .xml file created and open with IO::File and XML::Writer?

    So I'm running through a list of things and have code that creates an .xml file with IO::File called $doc, then I make a new writer with XML::Writer(OUTPUT = $doc). More code runs and I build a big xml file with XML::Writer. Then, near the end of the file, I find out if I need this file at all. If I do need it, I just $writer-end(); $doc-close(); but if I don't need it, what should I enter to just delete all data I've stored/saved and move onto the next file? I tried unlink($docpath) (before and after $doc-close()), the file was not deleted.

  • Is there an open source immutable dictionary for C#, with fast 'With/Without' methods?

    I'm looking for a proper C# immutable dictionary, with fast update methods (that create a partial copy of the dictionary with slight changes). I've implemented one myself, using zippers to update a red-black tree, but it's not particularly fast. By 'immutable dictionary' I don't just mean readonly or const. I want something that has reasonably fast 'With' and 'Without', or equivalent, methods that return a thing with slight modifications without modifying the original. An example from another language is map in Scala

  • Can anyone recommend a command line virus scanner that is open source and works with linux/php/apach

    Hey guys recently I have had the 'priveledge' of trying to set up an anti virus scanner to scan file uploads to my VPN server. I just finished trying to set up ClamAV but it slowed my server down to a hault once initiated so I had to kill it. Does anyone have any recommendations to a program that will accomplish my task and can be executed in php (other than clamAv)? Any advice greatly appreciated.

    In my app the user generates text content. I want to enable the user to launch the Mail application, which then should contain a specified subject and message body. Like: You write a poem in my app and then want to send it to your new girlfriend. So you tap a mail icon and the Mail app opens, containing already an subject and message body with your poem inside. Someone said there is a kind of URL mechanism for that?

  • How long can a hash left out in the open be considered safe?

    If I were to leave a SHA2 family hash out on my website - how long would it be considered safe? How long would I have before I could be sure that someone would find a collision for it and know what was hashed? I know that the amount of time would be based on the computational power of the one seeking to break it. It would also depend on the string length, but I'm curious just how secure hashes are. Since many of us run web-servers we constantly have to be prepared for the day when someone might make it all the way to the database which stores the user hashes. So, move the server security out of the way and then what do you have? This is a slightly theoretical area for many of the people I have talked with, so I would love to actually have some more information about average expectations for cracking.

    As an ASP.NET developer, I'm used to working with how VS/C# transparently autogens proxy classes for web references (yes, I know, we're spoiled), but now that I'm creating documentation for more than one coding platform I'm trying to discover what the equivelant to that is in any other framework. So is there a similar way to work transparently with web reference proxy classes for say, RoR, PHP, and Python? And if there's nothing integrated, are there tools you recommend to autogen the proxy classes, or do you recommend to roll custom classes?

  • How to automatically open a session after a Windows 2003 SP2 reboot ?

    Hi, i'm using a Windows 2003 Server. I have a session with my username on it and i have a windows application (not service) opened on it. I want this application to always be running. The problem is, when Security updates force Windows to reboot, my session is closed and i need to reconnect to the session to get my application working again .. How can i do to automaticaly force the opening of my user's session upon server's reboot ? (application launch is in the startup of my session) Thanks
