• What of my Swap space if I choose to replace windows with ubuntu?

  When I install Ubunut 12.04 I'll be presented with three options - install ubuntu alongside windows, replace windows with ubuntu and 'something else'. If I choose 'replace windows' then I can not be able to make a swap space. So what then. I've 1GB ram. And if I choose 'replace windows' will my only C drive get replaced or what'll happen? If only C drive is affected then will data on the other 2 drives get saved? Again if yes, how can I access it (on which drive of ubuntu) after installing ubuntu?

• can't chmod on external hard disk?

  I have an USB3.0 external hard disk, partitioned to 3 NTFS partitions. When I plug the hard disk in, the 3 partitions automatically mounted under /media. So far so good. I can read and write to files, or mkdir, etc on these partitions. But I can't do chmod/chown on any of the files/directories on these partitions. The owner:group always myself, and the mode are always 700 for directories and 600 for files. I have another partition on internal harddisk also mounted. That partition works fine. I looked the output of mount command, the only difference between mount options is that there is one extra 'default_permissions' on the external hard disks. Anyway I can set the owner:group and mode on these files and directories.

• What encryption algorithm/package should I use in a betting game type situation?

  I have a betting type site where I publish a number (between 0-100) that is encrypted. Then after a period of time, I would review what the number is and prove it with a key to decrypt the encrypted number to prove that I'm not cheating. I also want it to be easily verifiable by an average user. What encryption algorithm/technique/package should I use? I'm no expert on cryptography. There seems to be so many options out there and I'm not sure what to use. python friendly is a plus.

  I wonder, what options do I have in the following situation. In the course of the several projects I realised the need in some auxilary software product (related to testing of the main products). I applied a creative approach to the matter and implemented a system which I think has a potential and looking promising (maybe not on the market but at least among some interested supporters). I have even more ideas related to this system and continue developing at my free and work time. It has become a work and hobby at the same time. Unfortunately, this work basically has nothing in common with the company's business and there is no way this will be organized in a form of standard development process and be presented to costumers as a product. What can you suggest in this situation? How to avoid breaching of contract? Have you had something similar in your career? What if my intention is to develop it as an open source project?

• Print Screen key doesn't work if a drop-down menu is active

  On 11.10, I don't get a screengrab when pressing the Print Screen button on my keyboard if I have activated a drop down menu. For example, in nautilus, I can click the File menu and press the print screen button, nothing happens. Deactivating the drop down menu and all other things being equal, it works. Is that normal? Often when using this thing I'm actually needing to show some of those menu options. Currently I use the workaround to grab after a delay of a few seconds, but I'm used to the print screen button working no matter what's in focus and would prefer it that way.

  When I hit the power button of my computer, a window titled 'Shut Down the Computer' appears. It gives a few options, including shutting down or restarting. This window is different following the context I hit the power button : when logged in and seeing my desktop, it includes colourful icons (red for shutting down, for example). when I am not logged in yet, the icons are monochrome and a little bit more stylized. I clearly prefer the last type of icons : how do I set them as default whatever the context of use of the 'Shut Down the Computer' window ?

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome Classic (no effects) and because of the fact that some system options have disappeared with the new system release I've been struggling with this for a while and despite this seems very easy I can't do this :/ - does anyone know how to choose a GDM Theme? I'm quite sure that GDM is now in use on my Ubuntu - I set it up with: sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm Despite I moved the theme folder to /usr/share/gdm/themes nothing has changed by now, I've logged out and in a couple of times but everytime I get the standard log in window and wallpaper (different from mine). So I'll appreciate any kind of help from anybody, now I have absolutely no idea how to figure it out. Cheers.

• Are areas a good organizational feature, or just extra work?

  Do Areas in ASP.NET MVC end up being a help or just a drag in the end (because of the URL construction)? Would it be better to have subdirectories inside the main Controllers folder? or are there any other options to organizing a project? EDIT For example, this is your average link without Areas: @Html.ActionLink("Home","Index","Home") and this is your average link with Areas: @Html.ActionLink("Home","Index", new { Area = "", Controller = "Home"}) Could the following work? I'm looking for a store to buy a suitable adaptor in locally and I can't find that particular adaptor - but I can see a Belkin F7D4101az. I think this is simply a newer model - but a Google search for "ubuntu belkin f7d4101az" brings no results - not even people trying to get it to work. Nothing. So I didn't want to purchase it without being sure. So far it does not seem like I need any polymorphic inheritence but at this point I am considering the following options: Have the common functionality in a utility class. Both of these classes call these methods from that utility class. Have an abstract class and implement common methods in that abstract class. Then derive MyFoo1 and MyFoo2 from that abstract class. • Keeping application backend and UI synchronised

  Hi all. I have an app that works with a list of objects so has one central keyed list. The main window has a tree containing these object with some information, which is easy enough to populate as a one off event after loading. Now, the complicated part, any part of the application can add, remove, and more importantly change the details of those objects at any time (all in the same process) and I'd like the tree to update to suit. I have a few options including passing events back down from the object to the list to the form which seems to be the most flexible way. I can also do it lazily and repopulate the tree each time or periodically (very hackish). Does anyone have any better thoughts on how to structure this? This is being done in C# 2.0 but the concepts apply to any environment. Thanks

• Why can't I log into Lubuntu after the 13.04 update, even if I know the password?

  After the 13.04 update the login screen started to appear, even though I chose to automatically login in the Lubuntu install options one week ago. Even if my password and username is correct it won't login, it will just come back to the login screen. When I press ALT-CTRL-F1 at the login screen I am able to login perfectly, but I have no GUI and I'm kind of lost on that field. WHat is going?Is it just a bug? Can I downgrade?I tried several forums with different solutions but none of them worked.

• What driver for nVIDIA GeForce MX440?

  I have recently installed (clean install) Ubuntu 12.10 on a desktop PC with nVIDIA GeForce MX440 (AGP 8x) and I have problems with Unity. Although I can see the desktop, however i can't see unity bar and icons. So, I decided to install lubuntu-desktop to see the performance. And yes! I choose lubuntu-desktop from Log On screen and the performance is definetely much better and has nothing to do with the aforementioned on unity. The system has native drivers from the Ubuntu installation. I didn't touch anything in xorg configuration. I also remember that I have managed to have the best performance with this graphic card on my previous Ubuntu 9.10 system, by editing some values in /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. But I can't remember that options, because I formatted the / partition! My question is: Which is the most suitable driver for this card, in order to load the unity feature and have better performance on it?

• How can I only load up the terminal via grub then upgrade

  So after the upgrade I made last night I can't load up the GUI properly. I have a feeling the upgrade died half way through. Grub is working. All the kernals are listed. That being said how can I: A) Make grub load into terminal only. No gui. B) How can I reinstall gnome? C) How can I try to install the upgrade for ubuntu again?   It’s finally here: the Kindle app for Windows Phone 7! Finally we can have our books on the go as well! It’s not sitting atop the “new” list on the WP7 marketplace though. I had to go to the Books section of the marketplace, and there its set to the top spot of free apps. I’m going to read the next chapter in my current book on it to see what the experience is like. After playing quickly with it, here’s some observations: - You flip pages going left to right, not up and down. No setting to change this if you don’t like it. - Good options for changing font size, background colour, and setting bookmarks. - *No* option for highlighting though. However, previous highlights do show up and you can review notes made in other programs Still, for a free Kindle reader and the ability to catch up on books wherever on the phone, so far so good!

• Problem with Nvidia after update

  After adding the most recent set of updates, I can't get into Ubuntu at all. I get a screen saying that I am running in low-graphics mode, 'your screen, graphics card and input device settings could not be detected correctly etc'. I can hit return and then get to the next screen saying 'what would you like to do?' however, i can't choose from the 4 options, the only keystroke that will register is escape, which takes me to a black screen with a login. I have an Nvidia GeForce 7050/nForce 610i and it has caused problems in the past, but I have always got round it by choosing to boot in recovery mode. Now, no matter which version I try to boot into I can't get into Ubuntu at all.
