• Grub - multiple distros

  I had Ubuntu 12.04 BETA installed on my entire HD. Then I decided to also install Linux Mint Debian Edition 121204 (LMDE). With gparted I shrunk my /home to make room for one more distro I created the partitions needed for LMDE, but figured I could use the same swap I installed LMDE - no errors. During install I selected to install GRUB to /dev/sda Grub shows Linux Mint Debian Edition, but no sign of Ubuntu The new LMDE install will not boot I can use LMDE from USB stick, which is what I use right now My Ubuntu /home has data that is not backed up (must recover) If I can boot back into Ubuntu to back up I am OK again. Please help. • f12 and ctrl + f5 not working correctly [migrated]

  When I came back to my work computer after being away for a week I found out when I try to clear the cache and refresh the page via ctrl + f5 (or just f5) I get the prompt "Type the Internet address of a document, and Internet Explorer will open it for you" with a drop down list in IE. When I try f5 in Chrome and FF it opens the "Open file" dialog box. When I try to f12 for Dev tools in IE, Chrome & FF it opens up the print dialog box. Why is this happening and what can I do to revert it back to the way it was?

• Drop in rankings after removing sitewide backlinks

  Here's the scenario: I have a small web design business and was using a branded backlink on the bottom of all client sites. Recently this has become a bit taboo with the Google updates so I went back to a few of my sites and made it so there's only a homepage backlink. After doing this, I've had a drop in rankings, despite this apparently being a best practice. Is this likely a temporary drop that will pick back up? For any new sites, I still want to have a link on all pages of client sites as it's good advertising. I plan to have a do-follow homepage link and then no-follow every other link - is this a good idea?

• How to get my windows docs ; pics, mp3, and docs off an external usb hard drive (sata 3.5 enclosure)

  Back when I had windows 7, I cloned my internal hard drive to an enclosed external usb hard drive. I then formatted my internal hard drive and installed ubuntu 11.10 as my only OS. How do I migrate my files, pics, mp3's, and etc off the external drive and back to my internal drive which now only has ubuntu on it. (and why is this process not made easier?) I have tried logging in as the root user but I cannot find the external device. I have downloaded several different apps to manage files, usb sticks and etc. PLEASE HELP!!!

  hello all i had ubuntu on my desktop but i had lots of problems with it so i turned back to windows... now im having the biggest problem ever :S all my dad was in a folder that i created on ubuntu OS and i copied em to another HDD and then i removed it and putted my HDD and removed all the partitions and made the windows parttions once i copied those folders back to my HDD ( using windows 7 ) i found those folders size 0KB when i try to open them i get error.. pleaaase tell me what to do.. i was using my /home partition as ext4.. waiting for answer :(

• Java EE @ NFJS Central Iowa Software Symposium Des Moines

  As some of you may be aware I recently joined the well-respected US based No Fluff Just Stuff (NFJS) Tour. The NFJS Central Iowa Software Symposium was held August 8 - 10 in Des Moines. The Des Moines show is one of the smaller ones but still was good overall. It is one of the few events of it's kind that take place this part the country so it is extremely important. I had five talks total over two days, more or less back-to-back. I had decent attendance for all my sessions and had many of the same folks staying for multiple sessions which is always a very good sign. I did talks on Java EE 7/Java EE 8, WebSocket, the Cargo Tracker Java EE Blue Prints, JavaScript + Java EE and NoSQL + Java EE. The employees are callers and after every call they will get some form on which they will give their call summery like time duration. They are payed for each call depending on time duration. In the back end there will be sql database and some code to calculate the the final salary. Current they have to calculate the salary manually, they are just using google docs form.I have some idea that i need php in the front end sql in the back end but i am not clear about the whole picture please can someone give me a clear skeleton. • Android 1.5 - 2.1 Search Activity affects Parent Lifecycle

  Behavior seems consistent in Android 1.5 to 2.1 Short version is this, it appears that when my (android search facility) search activity is fired from the android QSR due to either a suggestion or search, UNLESS my search activity in turn fires off a VISIBLE activity that is not the parent of the search, the search parents life cycle changes. It will NOT fire onDestroy until I launch a visible activity from it. If I do, onDestroy will fire fine. I need a way to get around this behavior... The long version: We have implemented a SearchSuggestion provider and a Search activity in our application. The one thing about it that is very odd is that if the SearchManager passes control to our custom Search activity, AND that activity does not create a visible Activity the Activity which parented the search does not destroy (onDestroy doesn't run) and it will not until we call a visible Activity from the parent activity. As long as our Search Activity fires off another Activity that gets focus the parent activity will fire onDestroy when I back out of it. The trick is that Activity must have a visual component. I tried to fake it out with a 'pass through' Activity so that my Search Activity could fire off another Intent and bail out but that didn't work either. I have tried setting our SearchActivity to launch singleTop and I also tried setting its noHistory attribute to true, tried setResult(RESULT_OK) in SearchACtivity prior to finish, bunch of other things, nothing is working. This is the chunk of code in our Search Activity onCreate. Couple of notes about it: If Intent is Action_Search (user typed in their own search and didn't pick a suggestion), we display a list of results as our Search Activity is a ListActivity. In this case when the item is picked, the Search Activity closes and our parent Activity does fire onDestroy() when we back out. If Intent is Action_View (user picked a suggestion) when type is "action" we fire off an Intent that creates a new visible Activity. In this case same thing, when we leave that new activity and return to the parent activity, the back key does cause the parent activity to fire onDestroy when leaving. If Intent is Action_View (user picked a suggestion) when type is "pitem" is where the problem lies. It works fine (the method call focuses an item on the parent activity), but when the back button is hit on the parent activity onDestroy is NOT called. IF after this executes I pick an option in the parent activity that fires off another activity and return to the parent then back out it will fire onDestroy() in the parent activity. Note that the "action" intent ends up running the exact same method call as "pitem", it just bring up a new visual Activity first. Also I can take out the method call from "pitem" and just finish() and the behavior is the same, the parent activity doesn't fire onDestroy() when backed out of. if (Intent.ACTION_SEARCH.equals(queryAction)) { this.setContentView(_layoutId); String searchKeywords = queryIntent.getStringExtra(SearchManager.QUERY); init(searchKeywords); } else if(Intent.ACTION_VIEW.equals(queryAction)){ Bundle bundle = queryIntent.getExtras(); String key = queryIntent.getDataString(); String userQuery = bundle.getString(SearchManager.USER_QUERY); String[] keyValues = key.split("-"); if(keyValues.length == 2) { String type = keyValues[0]; String value = keyValues[1]; if(type.equals("action")) { Intent intent = new Intent(this, EventInfoActivity.class); Long longKey = Long.parseLong(value); intent.putExtra("vo_id", longKey); startActivity(intent); finish(); } else if(type.equals("pitem")) { Integer id = Integer.parseInt(value); _application._servicesManager._mapHandlerSelector.selectInfoItem(id); finish(); } } } It just seems like something is being held onto and I can't figure out what it is, in all cases the Search Activity fires onDestroy() when finish() is called so it is definitely going away. • signalR groups - connecting/disconnecting and sending - am I missing something?

  very new to signalR, and have rolled up a very simple app that will take questions for moderation at conferences (felt like a straight forward use case) I have 2 hubs at the moment: - Question (for asking questions) - Speaker (these should receive questions and allow moderation, but that will come later) Solution lives at https://github.com/terrybrown/InterASK After watching a video (by David Fowler/Damian Edwards) (http://channel9.msdn.com/Shows/Web+Camps+TV/Damian-Edwards-and-David-Fowler-Demonstrate-SignalR) and another that I can't find the URL for atm, I thought I'd go with 'groups' as the concept to keep messages flowing to the right people. I implemented IConnected, IDisconnect as I'd seen in one of the videos, and upon debugging I can see Connect fire (and on reload I can see disconnect fire), but it seems nothing I do adds a person to a group. The signalR documentation suggests "Groups are not persisted on the server so applications are responsible for keeping track of what connections are in what groups so things like group count can be achieved" which I guess is telling me that I need to keep some method (static or otherwise?) of tracking who is in a group? Certainly I don't seem able to send to groups currently, though I have no problem distributing to anyone currently connected to the app and implementing the same JS method (2 machines on the same page). I suspect I'm just missing something - I read a few of the other questions on here, but none of them seem to mention IConnected/IDisconnect, which tells me these are either new (and nobody is using them) or that they're old (and nobody is using them). I know this could be considered a subjective question, though what I'm looking for is just a simple means of managing the groups so that I can do what I want to - send a question from one hub, and have people connected to a different hub receive it - groups felt the cleanest solution for this?   I have a word-wrap algorithm that basically generates lines of text that fit the width of the text. Unfortunately, it gets slow when I add too much text. I was wondering if I oversaw any major optimizations that could be made.   heya, I have a Excel .CSV file I'm attempting to read in with DictReader. All seems to be well, except it seems to omit rows, specifically those with missing columns. Our input looks like: mail,givenName,sn,lorem,ipsum,dolor,telephoneNumber [email protected],ian,bay,3424,8403,2535,+65(2)34523534545 [email protected],mike,gibson,3424,8403,2535,+65(2)34523534545 [email protected],ross,martin,,,,+65(2)34523534545 david[email protected],david,connor,,,,+65(2)34523534545 [email protected],chris,call,3424,8403,2535,+65(2)34523534545 So some of the rows have missing lorem/ipsum/dolor columns, and it's just a string of commas for those. We're reading it in with: def read_gd_dump(input_file="blah 20100423.csv"): gd_extract = csv.DictReader(open('blah 20100423.csv'), restval='missing', dialect='excel') return dict([(row['something'], row) for row in gd_extract]) And I checked that "something" (the key for our dict) isn't one of the missing columns, I had originally suspected it might be that. It's one of the columns after that. However, DictReader seems to completely skip over the rows. I tried setting restval to something, didn't seem to make any difference. I can't seem to find anything in Python's CSV docs (http://docs.python.org/library/csv.html) that would explain this behaviour, but I may have misread something. Any ideas? Thanks, Victor

How can i get only Joanna and John? Second question is how it is possible to do that user enters ...Value.Contains("jo") and query still returns Joanna and John? • How do I render *parts* of a svg file?

  Hello good people! :) I want to render parts of a svg file by name but for the life of me I cannot figure out how to do so (using python + gtk). Here's the svg file in question: http://david.bellot.free.fr/svg-cards/files/SVG-cards-2.0.1.tar.gz On his site, David, says: You can draw a card either by rendering the file onto a pixmap and clipping each card manually or by using the card's name through a DOM interface. All cards are embedded into a SVG group. I don't know what he means by a DOM interface. I have done some searching and the best result I found that seems to fit what I want to do is: QSvgRenderer *renderer = new QSvgRenderer(QLatin1String("SvgCardDeck.svg")); QGraphicsSvgItem *black = new QGraphicsSvgItem(); QGraphicsSvgItem *red = new QGraphicsSvgItem(); black->setSharedRenderer(renderer); black->setElementId(QLatin1String("black_joker")); red->setSharedRenderer(renderer); red->setElementId(QLatin1String("red_joker")); Notice however that it is for Qt and is not even written in python. • Why do some Flask session values disappear from the session after closing the browser window, but then reappear later without me adding them?

  So my understanding of Flask sessions is that I can use it like a dictionary and add values to a session by doing: session['key name'] = 'some value here' And that works fine. On a route I have the client call using AJAX post, I assign a value to the session. And it works fine. I can click on various pages of my site and the value stays in the session. If I close the browser window however, and then go back to my site, the session value I had in there is gone. So that's weird and you would think the problem is the session isn't permanent. I also implemented Flask-Openid and that uses the session to store information and that does persist if I close the browser window and open it back up again. I also checked the cookie after closing the browser window, but before going back to my site, and the cookie is indeed still there. Another odd piece of behaviour (which may be related) is that some values I have written to the session for testing purposes will go away when I access the AJAX post route and assign the correct value. So that is odd, but what is truly weird is that when I then close the browser window and open it up again, and have thus lost the value I was trying to retain, the ones that I lost previously actually return! They aren't being reassigned because there's no code in my Python files to reassign those values. Here is some outputs to helper make it clearer. They are all outputed from a route for a real page, and not the AJAX post route I mentioned above. This is the output after I have assigned the value I want to store in the session. The value key is 'userid' - all the other values are dummy ones I have added in trying to solve this problem. 'userid': 8 will stay in the session as long as I don't close the browser window. I can access other routes and the value will stay there just like it should. ['session.=', <SecureCookieSession {'userid': 8, 'test_variable_num': 102, 'adding using before request': 'hi', '_permanent': True, 'test_variable_text': 'hi!'}>] If I do close the browser window, and go back into the site, but without redoing the AJAX post request, I get this output: ['session.=', <SecureCookieSession {'adding using before request': 'hi', '_permanent': True, 'yo': 'yo'}>] The 'yo' value was not in the first first output. I don't know where it came from. I searched my code for 'yo' and there is no instances of me assigning that value anywhere. I think I may have added it to the session days ago. So it seems like it is persisting, but being hidden when the other values are written. And this last one is me accessing the AJAX post route again, and then going to the page that prints out the keys using debug. Same output as the first output I pasted above, which you would expect, and the 'yo' value is gone again (but it will come back if I close the browser window) ['session.=', <SecureCookieSession {'userid': 8, 'test_variable_num': 102, 'adding using before request': 'hi', '_permanent': True, 'test_variable_text': 'hi!'}>] I tested this in both Chrome and Firefox. So I find this all weird and I am guessing it stems from a misunderstanding of how sessions work. I think they're dictionaries and I can write dictionary values into them and retrieve them days later as long as I set the session to permanent and the cookie doesn't get deleted. Any ideas why this weird behaviour is happening?
