  • How to securely control access to a backend key server?

    I need to securely encrypt data in my database so that if the database is dumped, hackers are unable to decrypt the data. I'm planning on creating a simple key server on a different machine, and allowing the DB server access to it (restricted by IP address on the key server to permit the DB server). The key server would contain the key required to encrypt/decrypt data. However, if a hacker were able to get a shell on the DB server, they could request the key from the key server and therefore decrypt the data in the database. How could I prevent this (assuming all firewalls are in place, DB is not connected directly to the internet, etc)? i.e. is there some method I could use that could secure a request from the DB server to the key server so that even if a hacker had a shell on the DB server they'd be unable to make those same requests? Signed requests from the DB server could make issuing these requests less trivial - I suppose that'd help increase the amount of time it'd take to compromise the key server, something a hacker probably wouldn't have much of. As far as I can see, if someone can get a shell on the DB server everything's lost anyway. This could be mitigated by using one key per data item in the DB so at least there's not a single "master" key, but multiple keys that the hacker would need to access. What would be a secure method of ensuring requests from the DB server to the key server were authentic and could be trusted?

  • L2S DataContext out of synch: row not found or changed

    The Problem I am getting a number of errors that imply that the DataContext, or rather, the way I am using the DataContext is getting out of synch. The error occurs on db.SubmitChanges() where db is my DataContext instance. The error is: Row not found or changed. The problem only occurs intermitently, for example, adding a row then deleting it. If I stop the dev server and restart, the added row is there and I can delete it no problem. Ie, it seems that the problem is related to the DataContext losing track of the rows that have been added. IMPORTANT: Before anyone votes to close this thread, on the basis of it being a duplicate, I have checked the sql server profiler and there is no "Where 0 = 1" in the SQL. I have also recreated the dbml file, so am satisfied that the database schema is in synch with the schema represented by the dbml file. Ie, no cases of mismatched nullable/not nullable columns, etc. My Diagnosis (for what it is worth): It seems to be a problem related to how I am using the DataContext. I am new to MVC, Repositories and Services patterns, so suspect that I have wired things up wrong. The Setup Simple eLearning app in its early stages. Pupils need to be able to add and delete courses (Courses table) to their UserCourses. To do this, I have a service that gets a specific DataContext instance Dependency Injected into its constructor. Service Class Constructor: public class SqlPupilBlockService : IPupilBlockService { DataContext db; public SqlPupilBlockService(DataContext db) { this.db = db; CoursesRepository = new SqlRepository<Course>(db); UserCoursesRepository = new SqlRepository<UserCourse>(db); } // Etc, etc } The CoursesRepository and UserCoursesRepository are both private properties of the service class that are of Type IRepository (just a simple generic repository interface).   • Trying to move away from PHP/Yii: RoR, Python/Django or ASP.NET MVC? Your opinions please [closed]

    I have a CS degree and I've been working as a web developer (front & backend) for about 2 years now. I've been working with PHP mostly because it was easy to pick up and find a job, but I've grown to dislike the language and want to try something new, and possibly get a better paying job. That last point is especially important because in my area (Romania/Eastern Europe) PHP jobs are mostly for people fresh out of college/high school, hence the pay is rather low. I've been working with the Yii framework which, if I understand correctly, borrows a lot from Ruby on Rails (convention over configuration, MVC, Active Record, scaffolding). Other than PHP I only know curly-brace languages (C/C++/Java) and bash so Python/Ruby might be a bit challenging. On the other hand I've been using Linux (with vim and recently Sublime Text 2) for almost 4 years now so Windows and a lack of a terminal would have its downsides as well. I'm leaning towards Python/Ruby because of my *nix bias (plus both look like fun), but I've heard great things about ASP.NET MVC as well. Any suggestions? PS: I think there are more jobs in ASP.NET around here, but that's not necessarily a plus, because there are a lot of CS graduates as well. tl;dr: Romanian PHP/Yii developer trying to move to Python/Django or Ruby/Rails or C#/ASP.NET MVC. Suggestions?

Is there any (free) relational database systems that can handle multi-master setups good (i.e where it is easy to add and remove nodes) or is it better to go with a NoSQL-database? As what I have understood, a key-value store will handle this better. What database system do you recommend for a multi-master (cluster) setup?

    Hi, I would like to multi-thread an application, however one library i'm using is not multi-thread capable (i don't know what's the right word ? synchronized ?). What are my options ? As far as i know there's nothing in between threads and processes (Runtime.exec) in java (no abstraction in the jvm to have something like an isolated "java process"). How would you deal with that ?

Following Facebook's documentation I tried using the required_permissions argument to require_login.   • App Engine Authentication Error

    I have an app hosted by google app engine, and I am having trouble with authentication. When I login using my admin account and try to access the admin page or members pages, I just get a blank screen. I can login, and the members only menu shows when I login, but I just can't see any data from the members pages. I'm not really sure where I should start checking? My app is registered with my google apps account and I am using the only admin login that is there. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    iam having the following problem with whoosh full text search engine. 1.After syncdb i am creating the intial index from the database objects. 2.it is working fine.I can able to search the data and see the results. 3.after that in one of my view i have added another document (via signals) to the index (during a request --response) 4.that' it from then onwards i could not able to search any data , for which i have successfully found results before adding new document (before step 3) ix = storage.open_index() writer = ix.writer() writer.add_document(.............)     Hello I am working on a website that has a wide range of content. (News, FAQs, tutorials, blog, articles, product pages etc.) Currently a lot of this content is static or uses special-purpose scripts. I would like to move most of it under the wing of a single content manager. I have not used out of the box content management software previously so am hoping for some recommendations on what options there are and what might be best suited to a project like this. Whether the manager is open source or commercial, and what language it is written in, are not so important. I can customize the environment as necessary. The most important things are: 1) The ability to manage a wide variety of content. 2) The ability to create highly customized templates for a single page of content or entire category of content. 3) Flexibility. ie The ability to integrate managed content with other pages not controlled by the content manager.   • Rendering spatial data of GeoQuerySet in a custom view on GeoDjango

    Hello. I have just started my first project on GeoDjango. As a matter of fact, with GeoDjango powered Admin application we all have a great possibility to view/edit spatial data, associated with the current object. The problem is that after the objects having been populated I need to render several objects' associated geometry at once on a single map. I might implement it as a model action, redirecting to a custom view. I just don't know, how to include the OpenLayers widget in the view and how to render there my compound geometry from my GeoQuerySet. I would be very thankful for any hint from an experienced GeoDjango programmer.
