  • How can I wipe my iPod classic and fix any bad sectors on the hard drive without killing it?

    My iPod never finishes syncing and only syncs audio, not pictures or video - any ideas as to how I can fix it? My iPod classic 160GB worked well for a couple of years. I used to sync a lot of photos at full resolution to it, but this recently stopped working after I moved to Windows 7. iTunes is on latest version - 9.1.1.12 iPod software is up to date - 1.1.2 Windows 7 is fully up to date and patched The symptoms are that the iPod will start to sync, all audio (music and podcasts will sync successfully) but the syncing will then just appear to continue - itunes message: Syncing iPod. Do not Disconnect. This sync never completes - I have left it trying for days. I have tried resetting the iPod using the Restore button, whereupon it restarts sync from default options and again will sync audio, but nothing else. I suspect that something has gone wrong on the hard-drive - either a bad sector or some corrupt data. Is there a process I can go through to fix this? E.g. SpinRite or a format? If so how do I go about formatting an iPod and will it be recognised as an iPod after format and work as normal? Any advice on what to try next much appreciated? Update I have eliminated problems with the files, PC or iTunes as they sync fine to other iPods. I have also eliminated the cable by trying different cables which work with other iPods. What I'd really like to know is if there is any way to more fundamentally wipe the iPod safely, attempt to repair any bad sectors on the hard drive and then start from scratch. Anyone ever managed this?

My problem is that I do not know how large those views are. Well, of course, I know their hard-coded values... But I want to be a good citizen and not use hard-coded values and instead query them.   • Can not boot windows XP from cloned hard disk - what can I do?

    My configuration: a PC (some years old) with MSI K8N-Neo-4F Motherboard, 1 GB RAM. Disk 1 (Maxtor, SATA II, 250 GB): 2 Partitions, on Partition 1 (48 GB): Windows XP Professional (NTFS) on Partition 2 (190 GB): data (NTFS) I wanted to have a larger and faster disk (the PC is incredibly slow and permanently the disk is rattling when I try to open an application or during Windows startup), so I took Disk 2 (Seagate, Sata II, 500 GB), installed in the PC, created at first a 400 GB-partition at the end of the disk and cloned the data to it, which worked well Installed a swap partition and a partition for Ubuntu Linux 12.10 on the first "part" of the disk so I was able to boot Linux and the old Windows XP with the Linux "System selection" at startup. Now I wanted to move Windows XP to the new disk, deleted the Linux partitions cloned Windows XP to the new disk (with free tools - EASESUS), left both disks in the PC and tried to select the new hard drive during boot as boot partition. This did not work, the PC refused to boot from this second disk. I tried many things like making the boot partition on the 2nd drive "active" in the Windows System Preferences modifying the boot.ini file to boot from the second disk - tried to boot from it, but ended with an error message stating that it was not possible to boot from this disk because of a hardware failure or something else or so removing the original disk and plugging the new one on the same SATA port as the original one - also booting failed with an error message repairing the MBR by booting into recovery mode from the Windows XP Installation CD-ROM, selecting the second disk and doing "FIXMBR" which said that everything was fine with the MBR. after that at least the PC tried to boot from the newer disk and then startup was hanging during the blue screen with the Windows Logo.... no luck. ... deleting the cloned partition and cloning again - this time with Macrium Reflect Free version... - no success during booting. I tried a lot of things with no success, so I wonder what I am doing wrong?! What could I do to successfully clone my Win XP partition to replace the original disk by a larger one which is bootable.

  • Can I use HP Recovery Discs for a different hard drive capacity and make?

    About two years ago I created HP Recovery Discs (3 of them). Now my hard drive has crashed and new one is still a week from delivery. I was reading up on how to reinstall the genuine OS using the Recovery Discs as i was not given any Windows 7 installation discs. I did my bit of research after getting answers from the community on what these discs do and found out on other sites that people experience issues when recovering their OS from the disc. Especially when they change the make or capacity of the harddrive. Unfortunately I had to change the make as the hard drive that came built in has gone out of production. This question is just a part of my checklist to avoid problems when recovering the OS. I have: HP DV4-2126TX (available only in India I guess) I had: Seagate Momentus 320 GB I ordered: Western Digital Scorpio Black 500 GB Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit Is there a possibility to encounter any problems due to the changed capacity and make? I only want my genuine OS and drivers – not my data. I was told that Disc 1 contained the OS and drivers, and the rest of the discs contained data. I couldn't verify that.

    I am using VS2010, CrystalReport13 & MVC3. My problem is unable to add an external assembly in Crystal Report using "Database Expert" Option. I have a class named WeeklyReportModel in an external assembly. In my web project, data retrieving from DB as IEnumerable collection of WeeklyReportModel. I tried ProjectData - .NetObjects in Crystal Report for adding the WeeklyReportModel. But this external assembly is not showing under ".NetObjects". Then I tried other option as Create New Connection - ADO.Net – Make New Connection and pointed this External Assembly. It has been added under Ado.Net node, but while expanding displays as "...no items found..." Totally frustrated. Please help.   • Best format for hard drive for Windows and Mac?

    I have a 500 GB USB External Hard Drive. I need four partitions on it, for the following purposes: 160 GB for a bootable backup of my Mac. 160 GB for a bootable backup of my Windows. 11 GB for a bootable Snow Leopard Install Disk Rest as for file storage. Now I need a partition table which will get recognised on both Windows and Mac, without needing extra software on Windows, which will let me keep bootable copies of both OS'es, but let me access the file storage from both OS'es. Currently, I have a GUI Partition Table, with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Partitions for the two backups, Mac OS Extended for the Install Disk, and NTFS for the file storage. While this gets recognised perfectly on my Mac, thanks to an NTFS for Mac driver from Paragon, when connected to Windows, the drive is detected by the machine (listed in Safely Remove USB), but not recognised in Windows Explorer unless I install MacDrive, which is not feasible for me to install on public Windows Machines I might wanna access my storage area on. Can someone recommend the best combination of formats and software/drivers to get this done seamlessly?

  • How can I recover my data from a damaged hard drive?

    a few days ago when I was working on windows my laptop was beaten on the side where the hard drive is located. As a result, it was damaged and I couldn't access the windows partition. I had to boot the linux one, which is working without any trouble. I have 2 partition formatted with ntfs, the one with windows on it, and the other one intended to store data. I mounted the windows partition from ubuntu and I could see all my files. But when I tried to mount the data partition it was impossible. It threw me an error, it couldn't recognize ntfs partition. I try to copy the damaged disk into an external hard drive using the command: dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb conv=noerror,sync The progress stopped at 60%. I was still unable to mount the data partition. Now I'm trying to backup my files using an utility called Photorec. The problem is that it is recovering my files in a disorderly way, it is all mixed up and I need my original directory structure, it will become an endless task to organize the files as they were before. Is there any way I can get my partition back?

  • How to load an external swf to the main stage from an instanced child class?

    Hi, I am trying to get an instance of a class to the load an external swf and show it. So far I have the following: 1) I wrote a class that uses the Loader class to load an external swf "loadExtSWF". 2) I have a fla named "MainSWF.fla" that uses a document class "MainSWF.as". 3) I have the MainSWF.as file that instances "loadExtSWF" and calls loadExtSWF.startLoad to load the swf. This almost works. The instance of loadExtSWF loads the external swf, but the swf is not displayed. If I replace the fla's document class with loadExtSWF (this has an empty constructor) instead of MainSWF, and run loadExtSWF.startLoad, then the external swf is loaded and displayed. It seems that the way I initially do it, loads the swf to the wrong stage (?). Any ideas? Thanks for the help. Bye, RaamEE P.S.   • using own mail server with external domain and dns. Now have internal dns. dkim test not working

    I am not very knowledgeable in this area, but have been able to make great head way. Now i am stuck I setup my own mail server, e.g mailbox.example.com. I had the domain dns point to my mail server in my office. i was able to set up everything working fine. such as dkim and spf records. Recently i decided to setup an internal dns server in the office so as to resolve some addresses for some development servers internally. Ok the problem now is my mail server is sitting on the internal dns server (the mail server is on the same box as the dns server) its still able to send and receive emails but not sure if dkim is working properly. when i try to do a dkim test "amavisd test keys" i get "invalid (public key: not available)" and i know that that means i have a dns issue. so what should i do? I am currently looking at my internal dns zonefile and i dont know what to do (i am using bind dns server on an ubuntu-server box). do i configure a dkim txt record on the local dns ? or is there a way to forward dkim "request" to the external dns ? or do i have this whole thing done wrong ?   • Have you changed your coding style recently? It wasn't hard wasn't it?

    I've used to write code in C-like languages using the Allman style, regarding the position of braces. void foo(int bar) { if(bar) { //... } else return; //... } Now the last two years I have been working mostly in JavaScript and when we adopted jslint as part of our QA process, I had to adopt to the Crockford way of doing things. So I had to change the coding style into: function foo(bar) { if (bar) { //... } else { return; } //... } Now apart from comparing a C/C++ example with JavaScript, I must say that my JavaScript-Crockford-coding style now has spread into my C/C++/Java coding when I revise old projects and work on code in those languages that for example has no problem with single line statements or ambiguous newline insertion. I used to consider the later format very awkward, I have never had any problems with adapting my coding style to the one chosen by my predecessors, except for when I was a Junior developer mostly being the solve developer on legacy projects and the first thing I did was to change the indenting style. But now after a couple of months I consider the Allman style a little bit too spacious and feel more comfortable with the K&R-like style. Have you changed your coding style during your career?

  • Motherboard/PSU crippling USB and Sata

    I very recently bought a new desktop computer. The motherboard is: Z77MX-D3H and the power supply is ocz zs series 550w. The issue I have is that once I boot to the operating system (I have tried with fedora and Ubuntu with kernels 2.6.38 - 3.4.0), my hard drive (2.5" Magnetic) occasionally makes a power switch noise and it resets. Needless to say, when this drive is the OS drive, the OS crashes. I also have a SSD that works fine with the same OS configurations, but if I have the magnetic hard drive attached as second drive, it works erratically and the reconnects result in corrupted data. Also the issue of the usb reconnects is less frequent if the hard drive is plugged before I switch on the computer. Does anybody have some advice as to what I could do? Which is the faulty part/s that I should replace? As for me, I really don't know if to point my finger to the PSU or the Motherboard (I have updated to the latest firmware and checked the BIOS settings several times). EDIT: The reconnects are happening both in the Sata connected drives and the USBX connected drives.

  • What is the best free program to burn DVD movies from DVD movie files that are present on the hard drive the way ImgBurn does it in Windows?

    Evaluating burning programs is difficult: it takes more time, while errors are very unpleasant. I have looked at AcetoneISO, Brasero, and K3B (which many recommend) but they seem more limited than Nero, CDBurnXP and especially ImgBurn from Windows. They all seem to work (did not tested them fully myself) but at a more basic level (create ISO, burn them, etc.). When it comes to something like creating a DVD movie disk from DVD movie files present on the hard drive, it seems to me that I would have to create the ISO first and then burn it, which involves using more hard drive space and more time. Looking in the Windows direction, there is a Nero for Linux. It costs money. ImgBurn is said to work well in Wine, but as yet I have not tested it enough. What other options are there?

  • Questioning the motivation for dependency injection: Why is creating an object graph hard?

    Dependency injection frameworks like Google Guice give the following motivation for their usage (source): To construct an object, you first build its dependencies. But to build each dependency, you need its dependencies, and so on. So when you build an object, you really need to build an object graph. Building object graphs by hand is labour intensive (...) and makes testing difficult. But I don't buy this argument: Even without dependency injection, I can write classes which are both easy to instantiate and convenient to test. I have already done some end projects: Small Java Platform Game A Small Polynomial Solver A Small Image Sharing Site A Chess Website: chesslounge.net I am currently doing some Android Development and so far I have made a program that Vibrates, Blinks the Light, or Creates a custom status message based on the user input. And a program that rotates a pyramid with a texture. My question is: Should I stick to what I am doing or Learn something a little new? I am itching to do C++, but what is your advice?

  • Mount to /dev/sdb1 without password

    I am unable to mount a USB drive (or SD card) to my system without root access. When I plug in a USB drive, it is visible in the left column of Nautilus, but when I click on it to open it, I receive the error message Unable to mount 2.1 GB Filesystem Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: mount: only root can mount /dev/sdb1 on /media/sdb1 I am able to mount the drive using sudo mount -w /dev/sdb1, but this causes problems for operations such as creating startup discs, which requires unmounting and remounting the drive. I suspect this problem may be caused by the fact that when I upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04, I had an SD card plugged in. This caused the system to stall during later startups, as it could not find this drive. I remedied this by editing a line of /etc/fstab to read /dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1 vfat noauto 0 0 However, I am dual booting Ubuntu with Windows XP, and I have no problem mounting the C: drive of the Windows system without root access, so I feel that this is a problem related to the mount point rather than mounting in general.

  • Is there a current tool to build your boot / partition on hard drive?

    I tried Windows 8 Consumer Preview a couple months ago and it wiped out my partition table... or the boot information. So now the machine cannot boot to anything at all. Is there Ubuntu tools or Linux tool that can fix all the partition and make them boot again? (The partitions have Windows 7 and Vista on them. I run Ubuntu as a VM on Win 7). I tried another tool running on Vista and was able to see the Win 7 partition, except that tool wiped out the Vista boot info later on.

The drive is backed by a Windows Azure Page Blob formatted as a single NTFS volume VHD.   The Page Blob can be mounted as a drive within the Windows Azure cloud, where all non-buffered/flushed NTFS writes are made durable to the drive (Page Blob).   If the application using the drive crashes, the data is kept persistent via the Page Blob, and can be remounted when the application instance is restarted or remounted elsewhere for a different application instance to use.   Since the drive is an NTFS formatted Page Blob, you can also use the standard blob interfaces to uploaded and download your NTFS VHDs to the cloud.   • What makes it hard to protect from hacks/bots in BF3 and Quake Live?

    After playing these games, asking other players/admins, and reading online I am led to believe that Quake Live and Battlefield 3 are frequented by bots and there are plenty of hacks of various kinds. I'm confused how this is possible, or even easy seeing how many players have access to these kinds of "tools" (sic). Isn't it possible for the game authors to digitally sign the game executables so that when they run, the server can ensure only the allowed client is sending commands, thus preventing any kind of abuse? I.e. every player command would be signed by a private key, or symmetrically encrypted (not sure which would make more sense). I understand that players can look at the running executable's behavior (memory etc.), but if games are apparently so easy to hack, shouldn't most apps be hacked as well (e.g. Skype, all DRM running on Windows etc.)?

  • How to partition my hard drive for Ubuntu use?

    Till now I was windows user. From now on I want to use only Linux. I have 500Gb HDD. How do I partition it properly? I read that there is no right or wrong way, but still, I am confused. I did something and I have primary partition mounted on / (160Gb) which I believe is a OS and 350Gb extended partition of which I have 4Gb of swap and 346Gb mounted on /home. I got used to C:\ and D:\ partitioning, but I don't see file system in that way. I am lost. Where is what? How can I make C:\ partition for OS and D:\ for apps, movies, music, photos. Or what I want is Windows way and I have to get used to Linux way?

  • What can I do to utilize all my hard disk space?

    I had windows XP running on my computer. Then I installed Ubuntu from under windows. Then I decided I wanted to have only Ubuntu also because I got a system message that I am out of disk space. I loaded up my system from a live Ubuntu DVD and deleted the partition with windows on it and also the other partition that had my data on it. I expanded the partition which I thought to be the system partition (since there was no other partition left It had ext format. After that Ubuntu was working fine and I thought I have enough disk space, since my harddrive is an 80 GB ATA Maxtor. I left a small partition as backup. But after downloading a small amount of files I got the message again, that I am running out of disk space. I don't now. How can UI make my disk space bigger? I am not used to Ubuntu's file system, and I don't have the overview on how I can actually see how much space there is left for me to use. I have basically now 1 partition with the system on it and one small backup (as far as I understand).   • Why is it so hard to get people to pay for software?

    Where I come from software is considered something you can get for free (same goes for movies, etc.) The willingness not to pay for software is quite strong. It is putting me off, that people would rather go through hoops and risk legal issues than to pay a small amount of money for a piece of software. This attitude is somehow embedded in the society. I'm just trying to understand the situation. What do you think is causing this? Why won't some people pay for software even if it's cheap and they use it every day?
