• What's the best way of using a pair (triple, etc) of values as one value in C#?

  That is, I'd like to have a tuple of values. The use case on my mind: Dictionary<Pair<string, int>, object> or Dictionary<Triple<string, int, int>, object> Are there built-in types like Pair or Triple? Or what's the best way of implementing it? Update There are some general-purpose tuples implementations described in the answers, but for tuples used as keys in dictionaries you should additionaly verify correct calculation of the hash code. Some more info on that in another question. Update 2 I guess it is also worth reminding, that when you use some value as a key in dictionary, it should be immutable.

  I'm trying to decrypt a Perl code which I'm not familiar with, somehow related to HashRef. I'm using Amazon::S3, but my question is a general Perl question. "\n"; } I'm buzzled by each operator on the first line. What type exactly are $response, $respone-{bucket}. Looks like the expression within the 'for' is an array, but I don't understand this syntax: @{ ... }?

Layout must support several columns, tabbed interface Automatically bind business object values to the form Automatically read form values and write to business object Must support automatic validation Some basic workflows support would be good I used to work with TFS and saw how they implemented WorkItem templates (.wit files). • Swing Timer in Conjunction with Possible Long-running Background Task

  I need to perform a task repeatedly that affects both GUI-related and non GUI-related objects. One caveat is that no action should performed if the previous task had not completed when the next timer event is fired. My initial thoughts are to use a SwingTimer in conjunction with a javax.swing.SwingWorker object. The general setup would look like this. class { timer = new Timer(speed, this); timer.start(); public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) { SwingWorker worker = new SwingWorker() { @Override public ImageIcon[] doInBackground() { // potential long running task } @Override public void done() { // update GUI on event dispatch thread when complete } } } Some potential issues I see with this approach are: 1) Multiple SwingWorkers will be active if a worker has not completed before the next ActionEvent is fired by the timer. 2) A SwingWorker is only designed to be executed once, so holding a reference to the worker and reusing (is not?) a viable option. Is there a better way to achieve this?

  So I'm making an app where I want the users to be able add, edit and rate content, but I do not want to force them to register. Instead I was planning on just using their device id or device token to identify them. I'm planning on making both an iPhone and Android version, so I'm looking for a general solution, but the iPhone version has higher priority, so an iPhone specific solution would also be welcome. The problem is that I don't want just anyone to be able to use my web service by sending a phony device id or someone else's device id. How would the client prove to the server that it is providing the correct device id?

  I need a program to get the smaller of two numbers, and I'm wondering if using a standard "if x is less than y" int a, b, low; if (a < b) low = a; else low = a; is more or less efficient than this: int a, b, low; low = b + ((a - b) & ((a - b) >> 31)); (or the variation of putting int delta = a - b at the top and rerplacing instances of a - b with that). I'm just wondering which one of these would be more efficient (or if the difference is to miniscule to be relevant), and the efficiency of if-else statements versus alternatives in general.

• Learning OpenGL ES 1.x

  What is the quickest way to come up to speed on OpenGL ES 1.x? Let's assume I know nothing about OpenGL (which is not entirely true, but it's been a while since I last used OpenGL). I am most interested in learning this for iPhone-related development, but I'm interested in learning how it works on other platforms as well. I've found the book OpenGL ES 2.0 Programming Guide, but I am concerned that it might not be the best approach because it focuses on 2.0 rather than 1.x. My understanding is that 2.0 is not backwards-compatible with 1.x, so I may miss out on some important concepts. • Should I design the application or model (database) first?

  I am getting ready to start building a new web project in my spare time to bring to fruition an idea that has been bouncing around my head for a while. I have never gotten down whether I am better off first building the model and then the consuming application or the other way around. What are the best practices? What would you build first and why? I imagine that in general the application should generally drive the model, however the application like many websites really doesn't do much without the model. For some reason I find it easier at times to think in terms of the model since the application is really just actions on the model. Is this a poor way of thinking about things? What advantages/disadvantages does each option have?

There seems to be several ways to write a post. General article: I like this tool. This is how I do it. Specific technical issue: Programming solutions. I do get some traffic, but they don't leave any comments. Should I use HN and Reddit. What are some of the other places I can promote my blog? How to respond to negative comments (trolls)? • iPhone simple commercial barcode reader via camera

  Hey all, I've done some iPhone programming (safely midlevel) and now a requirement has come up for us to write a barcode reader that uses the iPhone camera. This is not for shopping or the general public but will be for internal use. My first thought was to simply programatically take a picture, upload it to server, and have a web service or something similar handle the heavy lifting of extracting the numbers out of the bar code. However I recently installed some apps already available on the iPhone that read bar codes, refer you to shopping sites, etc. and they seem to use the video camera to identify barcodes and extract the numbers. Does anyone know how this is being done or could point me to some open source or sample code?

• Possibility of language data type not mapped to shipped .NET Framework?

  Does anybody know of a managed programming language implemented on .NET that contains a specialized data type that is not mapped through to the Common Type System/FCL/BCL or one that does not have a shipped .NET equivalent (e.g. shipped standard types like System.String, System.Int32)? This question would likely come from the perspective of someone porting a compiler (although I'm not doing that). Is it as simple as the language creating a new data type outside the BCL/FCL for its specialized type? If so does this hinder interoperability between programming languages that are otherwise accustomed to mapping all their built-in data types to what's in the BCL/FCL, like Visual Basic and C#? I can imagine this situation might come about if an obscure language compiler of some kind is ported to .NET for which there is no direct mapping of one of its implicit data types to the shipped Framework. How is this situation supported or allowed in general? What would be the expectation of the compiler and the Common Language Runtime?

• Expert system for writing programs?

  I am brainstorming an idea of developing a high level software to manipulate matrix algebra equations, tensor manipulations to be exact, to produce optimized C++ code using several criteria such as sizes of dimensions, available memory on the system, etc. Something which is similar in spirit to tensor contraction engine, TCE, but specifically oriented towards producing optimized rather than general code. The end result desired is software which is expert in producing parallel program in my domain. Does this sort of development fall on the category of expert systems? What other projects out there work in the same area of producing code given the constraints?

• OpenLayers: Get resolution of map in a given projection (4326)

  I'm using OpenLayers to display OpenStreetMap maps. (Though, I'd assume this should be general enough to work for any map product...) I'm displaying some very sophisticated vector overlays, and the amount and resolution of the features I'm returning from the server via GeoJSON to overlay has proven too much for many computers. What I'd like to do now instead is to only send data befitting the resolution of the current zoom. This should be relatively easy to do using the getResolution and calculateBounds methods on the Map object. calculateBounds returns a Bounds object that then can be transformed between the map projection and display projection. How do I transform the resolution into my desired projection (4326 in this case)?

  On the slides I am revising from it says the following: Live objects can be identified either by maintaining a count of the number of references to each object, or by tracing chains of references from the roots. Reference counting is expensive – it needs action every time a reference changes and it doesn’t spot cyclical structures, but it can reclaim space incrementally. Tracing involves identifying live objects only when you need to reclaim space – moving the cost from general access to the time at which the GC runs, typically only when you are out of memory. I understand the principles of why reference counting is expensive but do not understand what "doesn’t spot cyclical structures, but it can reclaim space incrementally." means. Could anyone help me out a little bit please? Thanks

• Change a Recursive function that has a for loop in it into an iterative function?

  So I have this function that I'm trying to convert from a recursive algorithm to an iterative algorithm. I'm not even sure if I have the right subproblems but this seems to determined what I need in the correct way, but recursion can't be used you need to use dynamic programming so I need to change it to iterative bottom up or top down dynamic programming. The basic recursive function looks like this: Recursion(i,j) { if(i>j) return 0; else { //This finds the maximum value for all possible subproblems and returns that for this problem for(int x = i; x < j; x++) { if(some subsection i to x plus recursion(x+1,j) is > current max) max = some subsection i to x plus recursion(x+1,j) } } } This is the general idea, but since recursions typically don't have for loops in them I'm not sure exactly how I would convert this to iterative. Does anyone have any ideas?

  Hi guys, I got a question about Java coding in general... In some sample codes there are methods and classes declared WITHIN other methods and/or classes.... I've never heard/red about this...what effect does this kind of programming have? Wouldn't it be better to write down classes in a seperate file and methods side by side and not within each other (like every book tells you)? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this kind of programming? • Detecting Visual Studio Smart-tags events

  Is it possible to detect with VSX when any (or a particular) smart tag event is happening? I mean, every time we rename a variable, for example, a smart tag is available that allows us to change it through a form. I'd like to know if I can access that "text is changing" event. I don't mean to have to check for myself if the text is being changed and such, I'd like to make use of VS event system (if there is one). • cross-platform frameworks for storage + metadata?

  I don't quite know what to use for terminology, so bear with me... Are there any cross-platform frameworks out there that facilitate a kind of "virtual file storage" to encapsulate adding files along with a database of metadata? I'm thinking about something along the lines of iTunes or iPhoto, where the program manages a whole bunch of files (in those cases audio or image files) and has a database of metadata so you can organize/find those files easily. I'd like to cobble together something along those lines for files in general. edit: I am hesitant to store files in a database alone, e.g. MySQL, as there would be potentially tens of gigabytes in my application (this issue has been mentioned in several SO posts, see this one that gives several links to others). I'm looking at CouchDB though and maybe it has promise....

• Where's the font setting for folders in the Package Explorer?

  I'm talking about Eclipse (3.5 = Galileo), running under Kubuntu 9.10 and I have the Subversive plugin. I've been moved from Gnome-Ubuntu to Kubuntu, and one side effect was that some fonts are now just too tiny to read. File names in the explorer have a decent size, but folders are shown in a too-small font, and after having adjusted all the fonts in General|Appearance|Colors and Fonts the folders are unchanged. Maybe I'm just blind. I'd appreciate it if someone could point me to where I can adjust the font for folders in the Package Explorer

• Guaranteeing the onmouseout event to fire

  Hello everybody, I'm currently developing a web application and have run into a little problem. I'm using ExtJS, but I believe this to be a general JS question. When the cursor enters an HTML element, the onmouseover event is fired, when the cursor leaves that element, onmouseout is triggered. So far, so good. Unfortunately, it seems one can't fully rely on this behaviour. Very quick mouse movements can cause the event not to fire (as does repositioning the cursor with a pen tablet, for example). What are the best practices to handle these issues? Do I need to monitor all onmousemove events and manually keep track of where the cursor was last and fire the appropriate onmouseout event myself?
