• Basics for implementing SSL on PHP Website

In order to process credit card I need to implement SSL layer and process the pages. For rest of modules the SSL is optional. Now my points are: 1.) Is the location of file for http and https same? 2.) Can the session of http and https be shared? this is required as i need user login information and cart item information.

• Automating WebTrends analysis

  Every week I access server logs processed by WebTrends (for about 7 profiles) and copy ad clickthrough and visitor information into Excel spreadsheets. A lot of it is just accessing certain sections and finding the right title and then copying the unique visitor information. I tried using WebTrends' built-in query tool but that is really poorly done (only uses a drag-and-drop system instead of text-based) and it has a maximum number of parameters and maximum length of queries to query with. As far as I know, the tools in WebTrends are not suitable to my purpose of automating the entire web metrics gathering process. I've gotten access to the raw server logs, but it seems redundant to parse that given that they are already being processed by WebTrends. To me it seems very scriptable, but how would I go about doing that? Is screen-scraping an option?

• Java: JAX-WS passing authentication info to a call to webservice

  I am using JAX-WS. I am connecting to .NET webservice that requires authentication. I first call the Authentication.asmx so that I can be authenticated. The call returns me a LoginResult that contains a cookie name. Then I call another webservice and I need to somehow pass this cookie or a cookie name. and I don't know how. • Schemas and tables versus user-ids in a single table using PostgreSQL

  I'm developing a web app and I've come to a fork in the road with respect to database structure and I don't know which direction to take. I have a database with user information that I can structure one of two ways. The first is to create a schema and a set of tables for each user (duplicating the structure for each user) and the second is to create a single set of tables and query information based on user-id. Suppose 100000 users. Here are my questions: Considering security, performance, scalability and administration where does each choice lie? Would the answers change for 1000000 or 10000? Is there a set of best practices that lead to one choice or the other? It seems to me that multiple schemas are more secure since it's trivial to restrict user privileges but what about performance and scalability? Administration seems like a wash since dumping (and restoring) lots of schemas isn't any more difficult than dumping a few.

• Blank space after file extension -> weird FileInfo behaviour

  Somehow a file has appeared in one of my directories, and it has space at the end of its extension - its name is "test.txt ". The weird thing is that Directory.GetFiles() returns me the path of this file, but I'm unable to retrieve file information with FileInfo class. The error manifests here: DirectoryInfo di = new DirectoryInfo("c:\\somedir"); FileInfo fi = di.GetFileSystemInfos("test*")[0] as FileInfo; //correctly fi.FullName is "c:\somedir\test.txt " //but fi.Exists==false (!) Is FileInfo class broken? Can I somehow retrieve information about this file? I really don't know how did that file appear on my file system, and I am unable to recreate some more of them. All of my attempts to create a new file with this type of extension have failed, but now my program is crashing when encoutering it. I can easily handle the exception when finding the file, but boy am I curious about this!

• I need some career guidance, please.

  Hi, I have been a teacher of guitar and music theory for the last ten years or so, and I have decided to get out of it and pursue something involving computers, but I am very confused about it all. I have no training related to programming besides a knowledge of xhtml and css - which I realize are not even programming languages. My problem is that I know I want to do something with either making video games, computer/online applications, or some other programming job, but I haven't a clue how to begin. I picked up a book from the Head First series entitled, Head First Programming that uses Python to teach programming concepts, but after that, I don't really know what is a good direction for me in terms of balancing career satisfaction with job availability and acceptable pay. I am not looking for a huge salary, I just want to be able to survive doing something I love, and which challenges me. I don't know even a single person involved in a related field, so I am in need of guidance. The first thing I would like to know is whether pursuing a career as a programmer for video games is a realistic option. I love video games, and play them all the time, and I have always wanted to make them. If this is an option, what would be the recommended course of action? What is a good language or technology to get involved in for the job market now? I have read that PHP/MySQL is a good place to find a job for some. Can I find a job without school, or do I need to got o college? Also, will the Python I learn in this book translate into any other language I need to learn? If it is anything like music, then I am sure it will, but I don't know much about programming - yet. And last, yet perhaps most important, is thirty years old too old to take such a radical redirection in careers? Thank you for any help you can offer. I really need it.

  I have a requirement to create a webservice to expose certain items from a CMS as a web service, and I need some suggestions - the structure of the items is as such: item - field 1 - field 2 - field 3 - field 4 So, one would think that the class for this will be: public class MyItem { public string ItemName { get; set; } public List<MyField> Fields { get; set; } } public class MyField { public string FieldName { get; set; } public string FieldValue { get; set; } //they are always string (except - see below) } This works for when its always one level deep, but sometimes, one of the fields is actually a point to ANOTHER item (MyItem) or multiple MyItem (List<MyItem>), so I thought I would change the structure of MyField as follows, to make FieldValue as object; public class MyField { public string FieldName { get; set; } public object FieldValue { get; set; } //changed to object } So, now, I can put whatever I want in there. This is great in theory, but how will clients consume this? I suspect that when users make a reference to this web service, they won't know which object is being returned in that field? This seems like a not-so-good design. Is there a better approach to this?

Often apps with ZF looks like that: root public index.php .htaccess application library I have sth. like that: root application index.php .htaccess All my code is in the application folder. But there are also some .ini and .xml files with sensitive information e.g. login names and passwords and so on... If I add a .htaccess in the application folder with deny from all is the information secure inside the folder?

  I have a Plone site that has a lot of data in it and I would like to query the database for usage statistics; ie How many cals with more than 1 entries, how many blogs per group with entries after a given date, etc. I want to run the script from the command line... something like so: bin/instance [script name] I've been googling for a while now but can't find out how to do this. • Download a file from one ASP.NET web application to other (given the credentials)

  Hi everybody! Im working on a asp.net 3.5 web application (C#), where i have a file with some information that is updated frequently, and only few accounts can access to it (the application is using the asp.net authentication system, stored in a SQL database). My task is to parse that file, so i made a small parser (another web app) a to show the information in a more friendly way. However, everytime i want to parse it, i need to enter in the application with one of those accounts, download the file, put in the parser's folder. Is there any way to, given the username and password, download the file directly from the parser application and use that one? Thanks in advance

• Printing pdf without opening

  Hello there, I want to open a PDF-print dialog (not regular browser dialog) without visually opening the document so that I can print a pdf without having the header and footer information from a regular webpage print. I know this is possible, because I have seen it in the past on a postal service website for printing postage labels, but cannot remember where. As far as I know, printing it from an iframe doesnt work, as it only opens regular browser print dialog and gives me ugly page and url information: frames['name'].focus(); frames['name'].print(); Thank you for your time.   Hi, We have a requirement to upload documents to a specific SharePoint document library when a document is sent via email to a specific email address. I think SharePoint has this feature available. What I would like to know more importantly is mapping the information in the body of the email to the custom properties of the document. For example, if a custom field (property) is added to the document in SharePoint say - "Year". I provide the value of this property within the body of the email and attach the document in email. Is it possible that the provided value in the body of the email for the property is updated in SharePoint when the document is uploaded to SharePoint through email? We are using SharePoint 2007.   Below we have distances from the origin calculated in two different ways, giving the Euclidean distance, the Manhattan distance and the Chebyshev distance. Euclidean distance is what we use to calculate the magnitude of vectors in 2D/3D games, and that makes sense to me: Let's say we have a vector that gives us the range a spaceship with limited fuel can travel. If we calculated this with Manhattan metric, our ship could travel a distance of X if it were travelling horizontally or vertically, however the second it attempted to travel diagonally it could only tavel X/2! So like I say, Euclidean distance does make sense. However, I still don't quite get how we calculate 'real' distances from the vector's magnitude. Here are two points, purple at (2,2) and green at (3,3). We can take two points away from each other to derive a vector. Let's create a vector to describe the magnitude and direction of purple from green: |d| = purple - green |d| = (purple.x, purple.y) - (green.x, green.y) |d| = (2, 2) - (3, 3) |d| = <-1,-1> Let's derive the magnitude of the vector via Pythagoras to get a Euclidean measurement: euc_magnitude = sqrt((x*x)+(y*y)) euc_magnitude = sqrt((-1*-1)+(-1*-1)) euc_magnitude = sqrt((1)+(1)) euc_magnitude = sqrt(2) euc_magnitude = 1.41 Now, if the answer had been 1, that would make sense to me, because 1 unit (in the direction described by the vector) from the green is bang on the purple. But it's not. It's 1.41. 1.41 units is the direction described, to me at least, makes us overshoot the purple by almost half a unit: So what do we do to the magnitude to allow us to calculate real distances on our point graph? Worth noting I'm a beginner just working my way through theory. Haven't programmed a game in my life!

• Choosing between PHP and Java

  I've recently started University, studying Computing and IT. My Uni focuses on Java. My study will consist of mathematics, 'boring' IT related stuff and several Java units such as: -Software development with Java, -Object-oriented Java programming, -Relational databases: theory and practice (using Java), -Developing concurrent distributed systems (using Java), -Software engineering with objects (using Java). I'm trying to determine whenever I should focus on Java and self study it in my free time so that I can actually learn and become a competent Java programmer by the time I graduate, or, only do enough Java to get the degree but in my free time self study PHP and related web technologies. Job market in my area appears to be balanced for the two, salary and availability wise. Regardless of which patch I'd take getting a job should not be a problem however Java does seem to pay almost insignificantly more. In terms of my interest and career expectations, I don't have anything specific planned. I very much enjoy writing code but I don't really care what kind. So far I equally enjoyed writing C, AutoIT, vb.net, PHP and even Java. Basically, I'm happy as long as I get to type in code (be it low level programming or web back-end scripting). So the question really is, would my Uni and their Java focus profit me should I choose PHP? Or should I buy what my university is selling and stick to Java like a fly sticks to poop...? • Appending Dataset in Core Data execution of Update through iTuneStore

  So I have completed my code work. This is first time releasing the app through iTuneStore. Current state of reading Core Data (.sqlite) file is already prefetched (already has information like apple's 'Reciepie' program). Assuming I have successfully released through apple store, and decide to update my application to existing users. Say I have sqlite contents but it contains bit more information than previous SQLite file under same structure. Question 1. Every time update held to the existing user, does it removes previous ones and move new updated application? Question 2. if it is not, then HOW can I append the existing sql value?

High level requirements are Work on Windows and UNIX networks it has to be extremly performant it has to be 100% accuarate (massively) scalable and fun to write The sort of details I am after is manufacturer and versions of all major workstation hardware components such as motherboard, network card, sound card, hard drives, optical drives, memory, BIOS details, operating system information etc. I dont want to have to distribute a client on each workstation to collect the information although i will require automatic worksattion discovery I would value your thoughts on the best development language to employ I know there are products such as NEWT and stuff like nmap... • iPhone modal view inside another modal view?

  My App uses a modal view when users add a new foo. The user selects a foo type using this modal view. Depending on what type is selected, the user needs to be asked for more information. I'd like to use another modal view to ask for this extra information. I've tried to create the new modal view like the first one (which works great) and it leads to stack overflow/“Loading Stack Frames” error in Xcode. Am I going about this in completely the wrong way i.e. is this just a really bad idea? Should I rethink the UI itself? • Drawing the UIPicker values from multiple components?

  I have the UIPicker setup with multiple components and a button below it. Depending on what the user has chosen with the UIPicker determines which new view will be loaded but I am having trouble determining how to extrapolate the information from the picker itself. Right now I have this method being called when the button is pressed: - (IBAction) buttonPressed { if (component:1 == 1 && component:2 == 1) { //Load the view number 1. } else if (component:1 == 2 && component:2 == 1) { //Load the view number 2. } else { //Load the view number 3. } } I obviously know that my code is wrong but I hope it gets the point across. I have multiple components and I need to figure out how to use the information that the user is scrolling to on the picker to determine which view to move to. (I know how to load the views, I just commented those in the code to illuminate the problem areas better.)

• What are some tips for troubleshooting builds of complicated software?

  Sometimes I want to build Python or GCC from scratch just for fun, but I can't parse the errors I get, or don't understand statements like "libtool link error # XYZ". What are some tricks that unix/systems gurus use to compile software of this size from scratch? Of course I already do things like read config.log (if there is one), google around, and post in newsgroups. I'm looking for things that either make the process go smoother or get me more information about the error to help me understand and fix it. It's a little tough to get this information sometimes, because some compile bugs can be quite obscure. What can I do at that point?

• Booting sequence. Ubuntu 12.04 installation and cohabitation with former OSes

  I am on the brink of installing Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pengolin on the first primary partition of my hard-drive. (A day in History for me since I had always kept a MS windows at this first place). But I have some fears: This is my last computer available (In the past I used to have 2 or even 3 machines so I could always un/plug HDs for recovery operations and rescue) The current booting sequence is not straight forard. So as to explain the boot sequence let me briefly sum-up the history of this laptop computer. It was a dedicated Windows Vista computer. 1st and only Primary partition. Then I added Windows 7 (on the 2nd primary partition) letting the Windows Vista Boot Loader manage the boot sequence. Then I added Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx on the 1st sub-partition of the Extended Partitionm asking Grub to be the boot loader. But when I ask Grub to launch windows it launches the Vista BootLoader that manages the choice betzeen Vista and 7. So in theory Grub is on the MasterBootRecord - though I understand where the Vista BootLoader remains. Now, I will no longer use the Ubuntu 10.04 ( on extended partition) and also the Windows vista (on the first primary partition). I will install Ubuntu 12.04 on the First Primary, asking it to install a new bootloader. I want to keep the Windows 7 that is already on the Second Primary partition. And I want it to be loaded by the Ubuntu Boot loader(I don4t knoz zhich is included in this version)... And I am afraid the last point will not work.

  I have created and asp.net web site utilizing a web.sitemap file to help with navigation. The site needs to be deployed within a virtual directory inside of our SharePoint intranet site. The problem that I am running in to is that when I request the SiteMap.CurrentNode property, it is returning information from SharePoint's sitemap. Specifically, when i try to get my sitemap's title or description, I am getting information from SharePoint. I have tried re-naming my sitemap and declaring a new Sitemap provider within the web.config. After creating the new sitemap provider and requesting the SiteMap.currentNode, I receive an error message saying that it can't find the web.sitemap file. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

  currently I used SetUnhandledExceptionFilter() to provide callback to get information when an unhandled exception was occurred, that callback will provides me with EXCEPTION_RECORD which provides ExceptionAddress. [1]what is actually ExceptionAddress is? does it the address of function / code that gives exception, or the memory address that some function tried to access? [2]is there any better mechanism that could give me better information when unhandled exception occured? (I can't use debug mode or add any code that affect runtime performance, since crash is rare and only on release build when code run as fast as possible) [3]is there any way for me to get several callstack address when unhandled exception occured. [4]suppose ExceptionAddress has address A, and I have DLL X loaded and executed at base address A-x, and some other DLL Y at A+y, is it good to assume that crash was PROBABLY caused by code on DLL X?

• How to change system time or force a time sync

  My laptop is probably running out of CMOS battery, I know I have to fix it soon, but until then, this very annoying issue keeps me from using it. Scenario: My system clock is reset to 15/12/08 11:00 AM every time I turn on my computer. This has all sorts of side-effects, one of the more annoying being that I can't log into my gmail. At first I just waited for a time sync to happen, as I have that activated and all. It never happened. I googled and didn't find any way of enforcing a time sync, which I found very strange. Is there really none? Setting the time and date by hand is also a problem. For my 12.10 installation, the time & date settings are bugged. I remember it being for my last, older installation as well, though. Of course the easiest way should be to just manually edit the date and time fields by entering a new date. This is possible in theory, but the changes are reverted as soon as the text boxes loose focus. The other way to do it is to click the +-buttons for a long, long time. The first time I did that, the changes weren't stored either. I found out that afterwards I have to switch from manual to internet-sync mode and wait ~5 seconds until the in the top left corner of my system the new time is shown, or otherwise it won't have effect. So a nice solution would be one of the following: Setting the time/date by hand, maybe via terminal, so I can just enter the right values. Or, a command that would enforce an immediate time sync, that I can run after booting. I know I have to change the batteries soon, but this is seriously keeping me from working...
