• Proliant server will not accept new hard disks in RAID 1+0?

  I have a HP ProLiant DL380 G5, I have two logical drives configured with RAID. I have one logical drive RAID 1+0 with two 72 gb 10k sas 1 port spare no 376597-001. I had one hard disk fail and ordered a replacement. The configuration utility showed error and would not rebuild the RAID. I presumed a hard disk fault and ordered a replacement again. In the mean time I put the original failed disk back in the server and this started rebuilding. Currently shows ok status however in the log I can see hardware errors. The new disk has come and I again have the same problem of not accepting the hard disk. I have updated the P400 controller with the latest firmware 7.24 , but still no luck. The only difference I can see is the original drive has firmware 0103 (same as the RAID drive) and the new one has HPD2. Any advice would be appreciated. • tproxy squid bridge very slow when cache is full

  I have installed a bridge tproxy proxy in a fast server with 8GB ram. The traffic is around 60Mb/s. When I start for first time the proxy (with the cache empty) the proxy works very well but when the cache becomes full (few hours later) the bridge goes very slow, the traffic goes below 10Mb/s and the proxy server becomes unusable. Any hints of what may be happening?   I know little about networking the Internet, but, from what I understand, it works — very approximately — as follows: I, sitting at the computer example.com, send a message saying, roughly, "get http://s.tk" to my ISP, which passes the message along, eventually to the machine at s.tk. The s.tk machine gets "example.comhas sent 'gethttp://s.tk'", so sendssomefileto its ISP which passes the file along, eventually to the machine atexample.com`. When the file gets back to example.com, my computer, how does my computer know what to do with it? I'm sure the headers (or something else) indicate it's a Web page rather than, say, a Usenet post — that's not my question. My question is: how does it know whether to display the Web page in my open Opera window or my open Firefox window, or my other open Firefox window, or, heck, to open a new browser instance?

• Since upgrading to Windows 8.1, I can't open any files on a SMB share shared by my OS X Mavericks Mac

  I have a PC with Windows 8.1 and a Mac with Mavericks. I have a folder on the Mac that is shared with the PC. When I'm on the PC and I try to open a file that is shared by the Mac, such as an ISO file (a disk image), then I get a message saying that I cannot open the file, or the file is in use (it depends on the app/filetype). I have the same problem when I open a video file. Strangely, text files and PDF files are just fine. And if I copy any of the problematic files to the local Windows disk, then I can open them just fine. The specific error messages are: AVI files opened in VLC: "Your input can't be opened. VLC is unable to open the MRL." ISO files opened by Windows Explorer: "Sorry, there was a problem mounting the file." This only started happening after I upgraded to Windows 8.1 on the PC and Mavericks on the Mac. Mavericks upgraded its SMB version from SMB1 to SMB2, so perhaps that is related? Does anyone know what the problem might be, and how I could fix it? Thanks in advance!

  I hate it, when sites decide for me, which links should open in a new window, and which in the same. The back-button doesn't work. Good thing is, firefox has the option browser.link.open_newwindow. If I set this to 1, all links with target=blank open in the same window, as it should be. But now also clicks in external programs (like the email-client or newsreader) on links open this in the same window, destroying the already opened website. How can I configure firefox to open links in a website always in the same window, but in external programs opened URLs always in a new one?

However, I have one wireless access point that I need to run off of POE, but it has to be 24V DC. I'm afraid to plug it into the POE ProCurve because I'm not sure if it will zap the device.   I tried various way to fix this problem but ended up with a dead end. My problem would be the missing "Open With" context menu items (or subitems?). It did not appear even though I hovered it for a minutes or two. Below is a screenshot of the respective right-click menu. Note: The only problem with "Open With" is at the right-click menu (as well as FILE menu). Edited: The "Open With" context submenu that only accessible at the top, while the typical right click menu doesn't work. Repaste from Comment. I don't think it's involved with any windows files because other user in the same computer doesn't affected at all. I can see the "Open With" context submenu. I believe this must have involved with current user's registry. It happens to all files (any file types, except folder). I can only use Open With by clicking at the file and select it manually at the top of Explorer window. (Refer to the link for the screenshot)

  Say you have three files open in Adobe Illustrator, but you exit out of the program. Is there a way that you can have those three files opened back up when you open up Illustrator again? Similar to how most text editor programs are set up -- so when you open up the program again all your last stayed-open files are there.   On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, I can know currently open ports on the Windows Firewall using the following command: netsh firewall show state However, on Windows 7 and Hyper-V Server 2008 R2, when I give that command, it says: No ports are currently open on all network interfaces. IMPORTANT: Command executed successfully. However, "netsh firewall" is deprecated; use "netsh advfirewall firewall" instead. Apparently there are ports open because services such as NetBIOS NS, Remote Desktop, and Hyper-V remote administration are functioning. I tried a few 'netsh advfirewall' show commands, but didn't get a way to find out which ports are permit by Windows Firewall. Knowing the currently open ports, I can be sure that I'm permitting necessary and sufficient traffic to pass in, no more, no less. Going through the whole set of advanced firewall rules is so tedious and error-prone. Is there a command on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 to do this efficiently?

  My system in Windows 7 and fully up to date with all patches and options (except for Microsoft Silverlight, which I refuse to install). I get this error whenever I try to open an image using Windows Photo Viewer, such as when previewing from Explorer or when opening an image attachment to an email. I have already verified correct permissions to the file and all folders in the path. The strange thing is that every other program I have seems to open the images fine, including "Slideshow" from Windows Explorer. Even more strange, in WPV there is an "Open" menu that lists the other programs for images including GIMP and MS Paint and they open the very file that WPV is complaining about just fine. That should eliminate permissions as being the problem, especially since (logically at least) they are read/write while WPV is read-only. I have even edited and saved the images that WPV does not open. I am out of ideas, and searching for answer on the Web has resulted only in the same tired repitition of some flavor of "take ownership and reset permissions for the entire drive", which I have already done. And which is counter-indicated by the fact that only Windows Photo Viewer seems to have a problem. The one thing which is slightly unusual is that for normal files they are all on a second HDD mounted into C:, however for email attachments the temporary folder is C:\Temp\, which is directly on that drive.

  I want to edit some .avi videos (cut them, to be precise) in VirtualDub but it failed to open the files. They are encoded in xvid, which I have installed, and play in KMPlayer without problem. Also, all other xvid videos can be opened and cut just fine by VirtualDub. I suspect there's something wrong in the first few bytes of these particular videos (the magic number?). This means I have to open the offending files in a hex editor and make some necessary adjustments to the header. Problem is, they are very large ( 3 GB each) and take very long time to open in UltraEdit. Can UltraEdit open just the first few bytes of a file? If not, do you know of an application that can do that? Edit: I'm using Windows XP.

• How to stop iPhone's safari browser from silently dropping tabs when you open a 9th tab?

  Currently in the iPhone safari mobile browser, if you have 8 tabs open and open a new tab, the new tab opens as requested, but one of the existing tabs is silently discarded. Is there any known way to change this behaviour, e.g. to prompt me first and allow me to choose which tab to close, or to open the 9th tab, or to at least have visibility of what tab was closed? When I open something in a new tab it's because I want to come back to the previous tab later, so this conflicts with the way I usually browse the web. My current workaround is to manually monitor the tab count -- i.e. to check that the count is 7 or less before opening a new tab.

  Over the weekend an internet-facing DI-624 router of mine was e-mailing me logs like crazy for some reason. Normally it's a few a day, but it was about one every few minutes instead. Analyzing the messages, I found that only 340 had the same src and dst port number, whereas the majority of "default deny" dropped packets (28,000+) had the two ports different. What does this mean?
