• How to diagnose a search engine ranking drop?

  EDIT: Reworded & Cleaned Up to Ease Understanding There has been a significant drop (90%) in traffic from Google to one of my well-established sites (6+ years) in the last week. Searches show that the top 3 wide keywords all dropped 4 spots. Searches for other keywords do not show ANY results in the first 10 to 25 pages of results, while previously one 1st or 2nd page at most. Since there are 200 factors for ranking, the question really is: What steps are necesary to figure out what caused such a drop? There has been no major changes during this period or the last month on the site and certainly not in the homepage which has dropped rank. Over all the years of running this site and plenty of others, I have never experienced this. There are no duplicate content on my site and I have rigorously used canonical links for the last few years to ensure it is not misinterpreted as such.

I have a scanned jpg file with below properties and size 8.5MB pixel dimension: 2468 × 3484 pixels print size: 208.96 × 294.98 millimeters resolution: 300 × 300 ppi I need to save the file as png while the size cannot be bigger than 4MB. The most important is that the size of picture must remain the same. I mean that the object size in the picture must stay the same. Could anybody tell me what is used to define the size of the objects in the picture?

  I have a survey with the following form fields: Country Age Male/Female Undergraduate/Graduate Question? Yes No If No, what about this and that? Yes No Google Forms and SurveyMonkey don't seem to allow things like the above. For question one I could ask, "What country are you from?" with a textbox as an answer section and work around it. But how do I go about creating questions five and six? I am not able to figure out how to do it except for having one more question that says "If your answer to the previous question was No, then blah blah (else skip this question)". Any suggestions, apart from creating my own custom website with JavaScript and a backend database?

  I have created a web site mianatura.net that doesn't even rank in the top 100 results in Google for the query "Mia Natura". I have the text Mia Natura in the domain, <title>, <h1>, I have the site in Google Webmaster Tools, the site is crawled (finding 172 results for site:mianatura.net). I have checked my standing manually (going through the SERPs), using What Page of Search Am I on and diyseo. The site is not involved in any dubious link building campaigns (as far as I know). So what's going on?

  I'm working on a website where users will be able to register and provide information about their location. In order to prevent users from inputting incorrect data, we don't want users to provide free-text information but instead choose from predefined values as much as possible. We believe there are 2 ways of providing those values: use an API to an external service provider or create your own local database. APIs Some resources: - https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/ads-api/get-autocomplete-data/ - http://developer.yahoo.com/geo/geoplanet/ Pros: -accuracy and completeness of data. -no maintenance related to update of data as this it taken care of by API provider. -easier/faster to get started (no need to create local database, just implement API). Cons: -degradation of performance when availability issues with external API. -outage due to changes to the external API (until your code is updated to reflect those changes). -lock-in with external provider.   Is there a firefox addon to save a webpage as a pdf file? I want to free service if available. In chrome save as pdf works after pressing Ctrl + P but this services is not available in firefox. You may ask why not use chrome. I am using yslow to generate reports and yslow does not show the printable view option were as firefox show it. But firefox does not have print/save as pdf but chrome does save as pdf.

  On Google, if you search for "chana dal recipe," in the middle of the search results page you'll see one search result with an image of the meal, taken from the underlying web page. It's the only one. Did: A) Google someone magically isolate the one image on the web page which summarized the recipe, --or-- B) did the webmaster/page author somehow designate and promote that particular image so that Google would inline it in the search results?

  Recently I installed Google Analytics on a Blogger account. I was shocked when I saw load times for the landing pages between 10 and 60 seconds. The blog uses Facebook like-box, twitter recent messages box, live traffic feed widget and Lockerz share buttons. Almost every post in this blog contains YouTube iframes which aren't nowhere near fast. Are there any well-known solutions for this type of problems? • Understanding CTR in Google Webmaster Tools

  I've got a site that's showing a 9% CTR for a phrase in Google Webmaster Tools, but the average position for my site is 14th (this includes 7 local results for this phrase). I was a little confused as to what the CTR actually meant, is it : for each person who searches for that phrase 9% of them click my site. or for each person who actually sees my site in the search results 9% of them click through (bearing in mind 14th is high on page 2 when the local listings are used).

• Does a "nofollow" attribute on a link prevent URL discovery by search engines?

  I know that nofollow prevents link juice from being passed across a link. But if search engine robots discover a link with a nofollow on it, will they add that link to their crawl queue? In other words, if I create a link to a brand new page and put a rel=nofollow attribute on that link, will it prevent search engine bots (particularly Googlebot) from crawling the page. (Assuming that this link remains the only link into that page.) I've read conflicting reports about this over the years and I'm looking for authoritative references about the current state of affairs. Official statements from Google or published results of independent testing would be ideal.

  Is there any tool or method that will load a localhost page a number of times, and return the averaged data for load times, onload events, Dom ready events, etc? I'd like to work on page speed optimization, but need a baseline before I begin. I have used both Google analytics and Webmaster tools, but I'd like an automated solutions that runs locally. My ideal solution would be a program or script that would take the path/file, number of iterations, and then take several minutes to load the page n times without cache and crunch numbers to create a baseline.

• How can I allow robots access to my sitemap, but prevent casual users from accessing it?

  I am storing my sitemaps in my web folder. I want web crawlers (Googlebot etc) to be able to access the file, but I dont necessarily want all and sundry to have access to it. For example, this site (superuser.com), has a site index - as specified by its robots.txt file (http://superuser.com/robots.txt). However, when you type http://superuser.com/sitemap.xml, you are directed to a 404 page. How can I implement the same thing on my website? I am running a LAMP website, also I am using a sitemap index file (so I have multiple site maps for the site). I would like to use the same mechanism to make them unavailable via a browser, as described above.

I know shopping carts like "Magento Community Edition(very big software)", "OpenCart", "Prestashop", etc, are opensource and maybe huge to develop by one programmer. What about hosted shopping carts like "shopify", "BigCommerce", "3dCart", etc.. are these carts too huge for a one programmer to develop them within 0-2yrs? • No date/time shown before my page in Google search results

  I know that by changing the meta description of my webpage, I can control the texts shown by Google in the search results. However I do not know how I can control the text shown just before the search results, for example the date when the page was last updated. Which meta tag to use to accomplish this? UPDATE: My webpage is automatically updated on a weekly basis on irregular intervals by a cronjob which makes changes to the MySQL database which holds the content of my webpages. So the question is what (meta) info to add to my page.

  A search on google for "iphone developer" turns up loads of websites which have "iphone" in them, a trademarked name by Apple. So I'm led to believe that having a domain such as iphonedeveloper.com is ok? Well, you're still using Apple's trademark, but it would be hard to brand yourself otherwise. You're an IPHONE DEVELOPER... right? Well, what if I want to provide a website where users pay to get a list of the best offers from Ebay? I might have a domain like ebaydeals.com (I don't... i'm just speculating!). Now I've heard that places like Ebay are really hot on the trigger and fire out emails to people who register domains like that straight away. But whats the difference? In both cases I'm making money from the trademark, effectively, so is it just down to how lenient the company who owns the trademark is? Or are there rules? Is there a specific "line" you don't cross? Thanks

• What expectation should I have of South African web development rates / duration? [closed]

  I am a developer but only intend on doing the front-end work for getting Reddit-like upvote / downvote functionality going on an upcoming site I'm building. I have never had to contract a developer for back-end work to implement code for me so I am quite in the dark on how much I should expect to pay and how long it could take to get the site going. I could be taken for a ride as the developer could distort the time it would take at a seemingly regular rate (hourly/day) or could otherwise distort their rate. Please could you give me help on this. I know you need some guidance on the nature of the site so here it is. I have a Reddit type template with CSS and PHP included. I then downloaded Pligg code that's intended to do the job of the Reddit upvote downvote functionality. How long would a developer roughly need to unite the theme and front end with the back-end functionality? I do understand it's not a lot of info but I'm sure you're experienced enough to have an instinct for the size of the project. Also, should I work on an hourly/day rate/ project payment agreement?

  In Google Webmaster Tools, I noticed that my front page was indexed two times: example.com/ example.com/?chocaid=397 I know that I could fix this with the use of link type canonical, but I wonder: Where does this parameter come from? There are various sites that have pages indexed with this very parameter/value: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=chocaid%3D397. I looked for similarities between these sites. but couldn't find a conclusive one: It's often the front page, but not in every case. Some are NSFW, but not all. • Customising Google Maps breaks highway label blocks

  I'm trying to customise a Google map to use shades of a particular colour. It's working nicely except the blocks that contain major road names / numbers is illegible. I've figured out how to target styles to those elements, but setting the 'color' value sets both text and background to that colour.
