• Determining whether a class implements a generic list in a T4 template

  I'm writing a T4 template which loads some classes from an assembly, does some analysis of the classes and then generates some code. One particular bit of analysis I need to do is to determine whether the class implements a generic list. I can do this pretty simply in C#, e.g. public class Foo : List<string> { } var t = typeof(Foo); if (t.BaseType != null && t.BaseType.IsGenericType && t.BaseType.GetGenericTypeDefinition() == typeof(List<>))) Console.WriteLine("Win"); However T4 templates use the FXCop introspection engine and so you do not have access to the .net reflection API. I've spent the past couple of hours in Reflector but still can't figure it out. Does anyone have any clues about how to do this?

• Purpose of front() and back() in assigning values in a Queue? (C++)

  I have declared: queue<int, list<int> > Q After a series of calls: Q.push(37); Q.pop(); Q.push(19); Q.push(3); Q.push(13); Q.front(); Q.push(22); Q.push(8); Q.back(); I get: 19-3-13-22-8-NULL What I don't get is what the calls to Q.front() and Q.back() do. From what I understand, they return a reference to the first or last elements respectively, but I dont see how my list would be any different had those calls not been made. Do they have any effect? Sorry if this seems trivial, but I'm trying to figure out of those calls have a purpose, or of my professor is just trying to screw with me.

  Given a list of (say) songs, what's the best way to determine their relative "popularity"? My first thought is to use Google Trends. This list of songs: Subterranean Homesick Blues Empire State of Mind California Gurls produces the following Google Trends report: (to find out what's popular now, I restricted the report to the last 30 days) Empire State of Mind is marginally more popular than California Gurls, and Subterranean Homesick Blues is far less popular than either. So this works pretty well, but what happens when your list is 100 or 1000 songs long? Google Trends only allows you to compare 5 terms at once, so absent a huge round-robin, what's the right approach? Another option is to just do a Google Search for each song and see which has the most results, but this doesn't really measure the same thing

• Recover that Photo, Picture or File You Deleted Accidentally

  Have you ever accidentally deleted a photo on your camera, computer, USB drive, or anywhere else? What you might not know is that you can usually restore those pictures—even from your camera’s memory stick. Windows tries to prevent you from making a big mistake by providing the Recycle Bin, where deleted files hang around for a while—but unfortunately it doesn’t work for external USB drives, USB flash drives, memory sticks, or mapped drives. The great news is that this technique also works if you accidentally deleted the photo… from the camera itself. That’s what happened to me, and prompted writing this article. Restore that File or Photo using Recuva The first piece of software that you’ll want to try is called Recuva, and it’s extremely easy to use—just make sure when you are installing it, that you don’t accidentally install that stupid Yahoo! toolbar that nobody wants. Now that you’ve installed the software, and avoided an awful toolbar installation, launch the Recuva wizard and let’s start through the process of recovering those pictures you shouldn’t have deleted. The first step on the wizard page will let you tell Recuva to only search for a specific type of file, which can save a lot of time while searching, and make it easier to find what you are looking for. Next you’ll need to specify where the file was, which will obviously be up to wherever you deleted it from. Since I deleted mine from my camera’s SD card, that’s where I’m looking for it. The next page will ask you whether you want to do a Deep Scan. My recommendation is to not select this for the first scan, because usually the quick scan can find it. You can always go back and run a deep scan a second time. And now, you’ll see all of the pictures deleted from your drive, memory stick, SD card, or wherever you searched. Looks like what happened in Vegas didn’t stay in Vegas after all… If there are a really large number of results, and you know exactly when the file was created or modified, you can switch to the advanced view, where you can sort by the last modified time. This can help speed up the process quite a bit, so you don’t have to look through quite as many files. At this point, you can right-click on any filename, and choose to Recover it, and then save the files elsewhere on your drive. Awesome! Restore that File or Photo using DiskDigger If you don’t have any luck with Recuva, you can always try out DiskDigger, another excellent piece of software. I’ve tested both of these applications very thoroughly, and found that neither of them will always find the same files, so it’s best to have both of them in your toolkit. Note that DiskDigger doesn’t require installation, making it a really great tool to throw on your PC repair Flash drive. Start off by choosing the drive you want to recover from…   Now you can choose whether to do a deep scan, or a really deep scan. Just like with Recuva, you’ll probably want to select the first one first. I’ve also had much better luck with the regular scan, rather than the “dig deeper” one. If you do choose the “dig deeper” one, you’ll be able to select exactly which types of files you are looking for, though again, you should use the regular scan first. Once you’ve come up with the results, you can click on the items on the left-hand side, and see a preview on the right.  You can select one or more files, and choose to restore them. And keep in mind, DiskDigger is a totally free donationware software from a single, helpful guy… so if his software helps you recover a photo you never thought you’d see again, you might want to think about throwing him a dollar or two. • error reading keytab file krb5.keytab

  I've noticed these kerberos keytab error messages on both SLES 11.2 and CentOS 6.3: sshd[31442]: pam_krb5[31442]: error reading keytab 'FILE: / etc/ krb5. keytab' /etc/krb5.keytab does not exist on our hosts, and from what I understand of the keytab file, we don't need it. Per this kerberos keytab introduction: A keytab is a file containing pairs of Kerberos principals and encrypted keys (these are derived from the Kerberos password). You can use this file to log into Kerberos without being prompted for a password. The most common personal use of keytab files is to allow scripts to authenticate to Kerberos without human interaction, or store a password in a plaintext file. This sounds like something we do not need and is perhaps better security-wise to not have it. How can I keep this error from popping up in our system logs? Thanks. EDIT This message shows up in /var/log/secure whenever a non-root user logs in via SSH or the console. It seems to only occur with password-based authentication. If I do a key-based ssh to a server, I don't see the error. If I log in with root, I do not see the error. Our Linux servers authenticate against Active Directory, so its a hearty mix of PAM, samba, kerberos, and winbind that is used to authenticate a user.

  I just attempted to install OpenVPN Access Server on my Debian VPS that uses OpenVZ. • Why can't “knife data bag from file” find existing json file on chef server?

  Summary: I'm running into a problem with "knife data bag from file", where knife doesn't recognize the .json data bag file pulled down from a remote git repo. Background: I'm currently trying to transition from chef-solo use to chef server while using the cookbooks, data bags and other chef info from our remote git repo. I've currently pulled down a copy of our git repo and set the cookbook path and data bag path in knife.rb. I also loaded the cookbooks, made adjustments, etc. Details: When trying to load our .json data bags by doing "knife data bag add from file FOLDER FILE" it looks like it worked until I do "knife data bag list" and it comes up blank. So I decided to try adding the edit option at the end to see what's being loaded, if it is. This is the error I get: knife data bag from file local_settings test.json -e nano ERROR: Could not find or open file 'test.json' in current directory or in 'data_bags/local_settings/test.json' The data bag file does exist, in the proper location, in a tested, working json file. I've also sometimes gotten an error saying "could not open data bag "local_settings". I would obviously like to keep the data bag path within the appropriate git repo folder to be able to keep track of changes in a more centralized location (our git repo, as opposed to the chef server). Any solutions, advice or pointers in the right direction are appreciated.

• Windows service runs file locally but not on server

  I created a simple Windows service in dot net which runs a file. When I run the service locally I see the file running in the task manager just fine. However, when I run the service on the server it won't run the file. I've checked the path to the file which is fine. I also checked the permissions on the folder and file, and they fine as well. Also there are no exceptions happening. Below is the code used to launch the process which runs the file. I posted this first on stack overflow, and some people were thinking this is a config issue, so I moved it here.   We've migrated a client from google apps to an MS Exchange 2010 SP2 on-premise setup. The setup /prepareAD went well, and the software was installed with the Administrator account. We've used the Exchange Management Console to setup mailboxes and had to google up the appropriate workarounds such as going into each users Advanced Security Settings and selecting "include inheritable permissions from this object's parents", and changing their logon-to from specific machines to "all computers" so that they can connect to Outlook Web Access, and in turn so their Outlook 2007-2010 clients can connect to Exchange. Sending and receiving emails are working well. Now that all this is in place, we can create Dynamic Distrubution Lists with no problem, but as soon as we try and create a DISTRIBUTION LIST, either in the EMC or the Exchange PowerShell, we get an error. As the error message in the powershell is more verbose, I include this if anyone can suggest how we remedy this: [PS] C:\Windows\system32new-DistributionGroup -Name 'projects' -SamAccountName 'projects' -Alias 'projects' Active Directory operation failed on DC.cppe.local. This error is not retriable. Additional information: Access is denied. • Why is my Network Connections list empty?

  I'm sure this question has been asked before, but none of the links I have found have worked. I've been trying to find fixes for the past couple of weeks. This all started a few days after I got my router. At first, I thought it was just something that would fix it self. But as usual, it never does. I am trying to update my router's wireless card to try and fix this problem, but I need to get the card's information to update it on the HP website. And since my Network Connections list is empty, I can't get any information about it. So to get around this, I tried to go to 'Manage Wireless Networks', and when I tried to get the properties from there, I get this error: Windows has encounter an error saving the wireless profile. Specific Error: The data is invalid. So, what all can I do to try and fix this? Any help will be appreciated. EDIT: Sorry, forgot to put router info. Router Model: WNR1000v2-V2 Router Maker: NETGEAR Router Firmware Version: V1.0.0.12NA The router is up-to-date on all updates.

  I have this one laptop that doesn't appear in WSUS all computers list. We have about 23-25 PCs/laptops/servers in the network, all, but one are listed in WSUS. This is what I have done so far: 1) Changing Updates on local PC: Go to your Windows XP client and start a new Microsoft Management Console (MMC). At Start, Run, type MMC. Use Ctrl+M to add a new snap-in. Click Add, and then add the Group Policy Object Editor for the Local Computer. Click Close, and then click OK. Expand the Local Computer Policy. Under Computer Configuration, go to Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Update. In the right-hand pane, double-click Specify intranet Microsoft update service location. Configure the settings to reflect my WSUS server.   My Windows 7 system backup keeps trying to back up 2 non existent file and one folder. I have double checked that these files do not exist. How does windows 7 try to backup that does not exist and then complain and fails the backup? Here is the messages: Backup encountered a problem while backing up file D:\Non library songs\Klub Arabia. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)) Backup encountered a problem while backing up file D:\Non library songs\Klub Arabia 2. (0x80070002)) These file/folders may have been there at some point but have since been moved. Any idea how to solve this? Does this mean all other content has been backed up successfully? • Typical outbound port list for guest access?

  I manage a weekly rental house that includes wireless Internet access. I've allowed all outbound ports on my router but my ISP has disabled my Internet access twice now because guests have downloaded (or served up) copyrighted content. So I'd like to institute some port filtering to discourage p2p sharing (see disclaimer below). But I don't want to inconvenience the 99.9% of folks who keep things above-board. My question is, what outbound ports are typically open for rental/hotel wireless Internet access, or where can I find such a list? TCP 80,443,25,110 at a minimum. Though my own email service uses 995 and 465 for SSL, some may use IMAP, I personally use SSH and FTP, so I'll open those. Roughly I figure I need to open access to privileged ports, and close 1024 & above. Is there a whitelist I should institute for commonly used high ports? And does it make sense to block UDP 1024 ? Disclaimer: I realize anyone replying to this message could circumvent the port filtering and share content to their heart's content. I do not need comprehensive p2p blocking, which requires more than a port whitelist. Anyone staying at the house shoulders the responsibility for their Internet use, per the rental contract. Also anyone savvy enough to circumvent the port filters would hopefully be savvy enough to use some sort of peer blocking, thereby preventing the ISP from taking down the service.

Is there any way how to prevent this? Well I am assuming it can be happened not only with e-mail backup. Can I rely on tar & gzip as a mail backup system?
