• Ubuntu keyboard detection from bash script

  Excuse my ignorance of linux OS/hardware issues...I'm just a programmer :) I have an application that calls out to some bash scripts to launch external applications, in this case Firefox. The application runs on a kiosk with touch screen capability. When launching Firefox, I also launch a virtual keyboard application that allows the user to have keyboard input. However, the kiosk also has both PS/2 and USB slots that would allow a user to plug-in a keyboard. If a keyboard were plugged in, it would be nice if I didn't have to launch the virtual keyboard and provide more screen space for the Firefox window. Is there a way for me to detect if a keyboard is plugged in from the bash script? Would it show up in /dev, and if so, would it show up at a consistent location? Would it make a difference if the user used a PS/2 or USB keyboard? Thanks!

  Hello, I'm getting following error when using Hibernate in a Java application over my DB2 database. This error occurs with one DB2 database and not with another (I'm almost sure the problem is in DB2 server side configuration), and I didn't found the difference between the two databases. • SATA vs SATA-II

  Hi all, I'm looking to replace my hard disk, which is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB. My friend told me to get a SATA HDD, not a SATA-II. What is the difference between the two? And is my old HDD a SATA or SATA-II? The new HDD I'm looking at is a Seagate 7200.12 ST3500418AS, which the store assistant told me is a SATA-II. However, the Seagate website labels both as SATA only. I'm afraid that I'll buy a HDD which is incompatible with my system, especially since I'm going to install Windows 7 on it and I previously had the problem of Windows (Vista) setup not recognizing my hard drive. • Packet loss rate with iperf and tcpdump

  I tested a line for its link quality with iperf. The measured speed (UDP port 9005) was 96Mbps, which is fine, because both servers are connected with 100Mbps to the internet. On the other hand the datagram loss rate was shown to be 3.3-3.7%, which I found a little too much. Using a high-speed transfer protocol I recorded the packets on both sides with tcpdump. Than I calculated the packet loss - average 0.25%. Have anyone an explanation, where this big difference may be coming from? What is an acceptable packet loss in your opinion?

• Load Average runaway

  Is there any way to chase down lockups and runaway load averages? Every so often (pretty randomly) I'll get my load average spike up over 5 usually to around 10-15 and sometimes as high as 75 (dual core machine), and cause my system to lock for an indeterminate amount of time. The only thing I can possibly chase it to is using nVidia fakeraid (RAID-1) with JFS on top of that for my /home partition. Also I noticed that when my load averages spike, the power management system doesn't step up my processor speed from 1.6 to its maximum 2.13Ghz clock speed (not sure if this makes a huge difference with this problem). Any ideas?

• Consolas Font In Vista And Win7

  I have downloaded the Consolas font from Microsoft and installed it on my Windows Vista box. Consolas is also present on my Windows 7 box. When I use PuTTY, being sure to use the same settings on both machines, the Windows 7 box can render Unicode line/box drawing characters in Consolas, but the Windows Vista box cannot. What is the relevant difference between them? If Consolas has the characters, why would they only appear on one system, and not on the other? I am logging into the same remote host each time, and I have been very carefully checking PuTTY's settings to make sure that they're the same on both machines. How can I make Consolas render Unicode line-drawing characters on Vista?

• Network Transfer Rate on SMB/FTP

  Hi, We're trying to optimise our network transfer rate from the client PCs to the file server, but having no luck. If I run an iperf test between a client PC (Windows XP) and our server (Linux) with a large TCP window size (the default is 8kb) I can get 60 Mbps. But when I run an SMB transfer speed test all I get is around 35 Mbps. When I run an FTP transfer speed test all I get is around 32 Mbps. I thought this was to do with the TCP window size, but I have now increased that to 256960 and it made no difference at all. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Or is 35 Mbps all I should expect? • Hardware selection for Linux machine

  Hi, I am building a new box, and planning to install Ubuntu 9-04 or Ubuntu 9-10 on it. I am wary of the hardware selection because in the past I struggled with lack of drivers or driver incompatibility with the network card and video card, etc. The last time I built a Linux box was 2007, and I have not kept up to date with the changes since. One notable difference is that I can no longer find motherboards with nVidia chip sets. • Getting 0x80070043 error when accessing Samba share from Windows 7

  I created a Samba share on my new Ubuntu 10.04 machine. When I try to access it from a Windows 7 client, I get network error 0x80070043 (The network path not found). However, I get this error when I click on the share in the Windows Explorer, so it seems that Windows does find the path. I already enabled NTLMv1, disabled 128bit security and made sure that NetBIOS is running. I briefly disabled the Windows firewall, it didn't make a difference. What could be the problem?

• Enabling fastCGI for php in PLESK 9.3 or use ningx

  I have a server that runs PLESK. I can set php to use 3 options: apache module, fastCGI application, cgi application And i have a different option that just says enable fastCGI support. Which option is the best to choose from? I run an php application with mysql and some ajax. Heavy reads and writes, it is a busy website. Second thing is will there be much difference if i install nginx to work with this. there is some sort of hack i can use to make ningx work on port 80 and apache on port 8080. I don't know if this is worth my while. thanks for your time folks!

• Apache Redirect to Jboss SSL

  I'm trying to have an SSL Connection to an Apache server on port 443 which I want to use to proxy connections to a JBoss server on a different port. The SSL certificates sit on the Jboss server not on the Apache server. Is it possible to redirect HTTPS traffic from Apache to the Jboss Server and have the JBoss server do the SSL handshake? The Apache server must be able to redirect HTTPS traffic for two different URLS. One for a secure site. The other for access to web services. By the way I'm using it mutual authentication, if that makes any difference. What does the Apache config file need to contain? or are there any good example of this out there? Thanks

• Rsync from godaddy to OS X

  I would like to use rsync to backup my website to my local computer (OS X). I started of with this guide and got pretty far. I use the following rsync-line: rsync -PzrlptgD --del --delete-excluded -r --rsync-path=~/bin/rsync user@server:~/ /local/backup/folder/ I wanted to use the -a option (same as rlptgoD) but it crashes as soon as I use the -o flag. receiving file list ... rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (8 bytes received so far) [receiver] rsync error: unexplained error (code 255) at /SourceCache/rsync/rsync-42/rsync/io.c(452) [receiver=2.6.9] If I skip the --owner flag it copies the files but I'm not really sure what difference it makes (I've tried to read up on it but found nothing) Should I just skip using the --owner flag? • Why are 32-bit application pools more efficient in IIS? [closed]

  I've been running load tests with two different ASP.NET web applications in IIS. The tests are run with 5,10,25, and 250 user agents. Tested on a box with 8 GB RAM, Windows 7 Ultimate x64. The same box running both IIS and the load test project. I did many runs, and the data is very consistent. For every load, I see a lower "Avg. Page Time (sec)" and a lower "Avg. Response Time (sec)" if I have "Enable 32-bit Applications" set to True in the Application Pools. The difference gets more pronounced the higher the load. At very high loads, the web applications start to throw errors (503) if the application pools are 64-bit, but they can can keep up if set to 32-bit. Why are 32-bit app pools so much more efficient? Why isn't the default for application pools 32-bit?

• IPSec VPN's being dropped by router and will not re-establish

  We have 3 sites, with our two remote sites connection to head office via LAN-to-LAN VPN's. All 3 sites use DrayTek 2900's with firware version v3.3.1.1_RC2 (this is a release candidate that DrayTek suggested I try, but sadly it made no difference). The only way to re-establish the VPN's once they have been dropped is to restart the router. Head office is set to dial out to both sites, with both the 'Always on' and 'Enable PING to keep alive' (pinging a server in the remote offices) options ticked. However, at random intervals the VPN's drop, logging IKE_RELEASE VPN : Dial-out Profile Index = 7, Name = Shepton (for one connection, and '6' & 'Wincanton' for the other connection). I first tried swapping the router with one at another site, and then had all three replaced, but that failed to solve the problem. Is anyone aware of anything that could cause the VPN's to drop randomly like this? Thanks.

• Distinction between Cloud Servers and VPS

  What is the distinction between a Cloud based host and a VPS? I talked to a Rackspace Cloud sales person for around 45 minutes and never came to a real conclusion on this. So, to elaborate on my question a bit -- what benefits might a "cloud" server provide me versus a VPS provider such as Linode and vice versa -- what benefits would a VPS provide over a cloud provider? From what I've been able to ascertain, when you host on a cloud (with Rackspace Cloud) you get a instance of Linux in which you install software and such (a LAMP, for instance). From what I can figure, if the instance is running, I am charged and the pricing on Rackspace (according to what I understood from the sales rep) comes out to about $20 a month.... I was thinking a cloud customer pays per processing hours -- so if your app just sits there, no charges are incurred. Does one not pay of the cloud instance is shut down, perhaps? • Natively open .doc or .odt file in LaTex

  I have looked at ways to convert word or open office text files to LaTex format, and those have been addressed on SU here and here. These will work, but I'd rather have a native single-step solution. Does anyone know of any module or add-on for LaTex that will let one open .doc and/or .odt files without the use of third-party conversion tools? It would be ideal if it would allow for editing and saving in the same format. If it makes any difference, I am using LaTex Editor in Windows.

• RAIDZ vs RAID1+0

  Hi guys I just got 4 SSDs for my FreeNAS box. This server is only used to serve a single iSCSI extent to my Citrix XenServer pool and was wondering if I should setup them up in a RAIDZ or a RAID 1+0 configuration. This isn't used for anything in production, just for my test lab so I'm not sure which one is going to be better in this scenario. Will I see a major difference in speed or reliability? Currently the server has three 500GB Western Digital Blue drives and it's dog slow when I deploy a new version of our software on it, hence the upgrade.

• DNSCurve vs DNSSEC

  Can someone informed, please give a lengthy reply about the differences and advantages/disadvantages of both approaches? I am not a DNS expert, not a programmer. I have a decent basic understanding of DNS, and enough knowledge to understand how things like the kaminsky bug work. From what I understand, DNSCurve has stronger encryption, is far simpler to setup, and an altogether better solution. DNSSEC is needlessly complicated and uses breakable encryption, however it provides end to end security, something DNSCurve does not. However, many of the articles I have read have seemed to indicate that end to end security is of little use or makes no difference. So which is true? Which is the better solution, or what are the disadvantages/advantages of each? edit: I would appreciate if someone could explain what is gained by encrypting the message contents, when the goal is authentication rather than confidentiality. • Netbook performance - 1.33 GHz vs 1.6/1.66 GHz Atom

  All new 11" netbooks seem to carry 1.33 GHz Atom Z520 CPU instead of 1.6/1.66 GHz Atom N270/N280. The screen resolution of 11" netbooks make them very appealing, but I'm a bit concerned about their performance as they carry a slower CPU than the 1.6GHz Atom, which isn't a great performer in the first place. Is there any significant difference in performance between 1.33 GHz and 1.6/1.66 GHz Atom processors in day to day usage? Are any of those fast enough to decode 720p x264 video? (When paired with typical Intel GMA platform and software decoder like ffdshow/CoreAVC of course, not with Nvidia Ion platform)

• What is a ‘best practice’ backup plan for a website?

  I have a website which is very large and has a large user-base. I am trying to think of a 'best practice' way to create a back up or mirror website, so if something happens on domain.com, I can quickly point the site to backup.domain.com via 401 redirect. This would give me time to troubleshoot domain.com while everyone is viewing backup.domain.com and not knowing the difference. Is my method the ideal method, or have you enacted better methods to creating a backup site? I don't want to have the site go down and then get yelled at every minute while I'm trying to fix it. Ideally I would just 'flip the switch' and it would redirect the user to a backup. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

• Project Server 2007 install issue - ProjectEventService won't start

  Trying to install PS2007 with SP1 on Server 2003. The install goes fine, but when running the SharePoint Configuration Wizard, it fails at stage 6 of 12 with the error: Failed to register SharePoint Services. An exception of type System.InvalidOperationException was thrown. Additional exception information: Cannot start service ProjectEventService on computer '.'. From the PSCDiagnostics log: Exception: System.InvalidOperationException: Cannot start service ProjectEventService on computer '.'. --- System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. The ProjectEventService (Microsoft Office Project Server Event) won't even start manually using the Network Service account. Starting the service with a domain account works, but subsequently running the Config Wizard causes the service to be removed and re-provisioned to run using the Network Service account, which again fails. Presumably Network Service needs elevated permissions, but even adding it to the local Admin group makes no difference. Anyone come across this sort of issue before?

• Forwarding all mail to a single dev box on IIS via virtual SMTP

  I am trying to set up a development environment for our web server. I would like all emails that are relayed by the server go to a specific mailbox, regardless of who they were sent to. For example, some application on the server sends an email to [email protected]. I want that email to go to [email protected]. Is that possible to do with IIS/Virtual SMTP? Is there some other way of doing this? I don't have exchange server running, if that makes a difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

  I had been practicing ASP on my local machine.. I just wanted to change the TCP port address to 8080 and that is what I did, since then the URL "http://localhost/" is showing PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED, and technical reason being shown is : "You have attempted to execute a CGI, ISAPI, or other executable program from a directory that does not allow programs to be executed." I tried to change back the TCP port address to 80, (which is default) but its not making any difference. What should I do now, to make localhost to work as before ? When I create a virtual directory for the same path "C:/InetPub/wwwroot" then it works but with this URL "http://localhost/virualname/filename.asp" .. where as "http://localhost/filename.asp" throws error, as mentioned above. Can you please explain me what is this consequence is?? thank you :) Details: IIS verion is 7, OS XP,

• ADSL Modem Goes Slower Than Dialup

  Hi All, I have two ADSL modems, the first one does not have wireless, but is configured and working fine at around 6 - 7 mbps (ADSL) on Orcon in New Zealand. I bought a Belkin N150 wireless router to replace the first one. I configured it exactly the same as the first one, but a speed test confirms that it is running slower than dial up. One difference I noticed is that the first modem (a linksys) came from Orcon, and didn't have an ADSL username and password set up. The Belkin modem on the other hand wouldn't let me leave the username and password field blank. Any ideas? I am a techy guy, so it doesn't appear to be anything obvious with the settings I have missed. Thanks.

• How to set _optimizer_search_limit and _optimizer_max_permutations in Oracle10g.

  I am working on a product that must support both MSSQL and Oracle (10g and 11g). I have some very complex queries that seem to run without issue on MSSQL 2005/2008, but very, very slow with Oracle. The CPU on the oracle server skyrockets for long periods of time, and it seems like the optimizer may be trying to find the best execution plan for the very complex query. I did some Googling to figure out how to limit the amount of time the optimizer spends on this, and came up with _optimizer_search_limit and _optimizer_max_permutations. Both of these parameters are hidden in Oracle 10g, and setting them in init.ora doesn't seem to make any difference. How do I set these parameters in Oracle. Or am I just totally barking up the wrong tree with the assumption that the optimizer is spending several minutes finding an execution plan? Thanks.
